oh,my god!

To Helen——Edgar Allan Poe
Helen, thy beauty is to me
Like those Nicean barks of yore,
That gently, o'er a perfumed sea,
The weary, way-worn wanderer bore
To his own native shore.
On desperate seas long wont to roam,
Thy hyacinth hair, thy classic face,
Thy Naiad airs have brought me home
To the glory that was Greece.
And the grandeur that was Rome.
Lo! in yon brilliant window-niche
How statue-like I see thee stand!
The agate lamp within thy hand,
Ah! Psyche from the regions which
Are Holy Land!

There were three brothers. They each decided to find a precious treasure and meet a year later.
One year later, the three brothers gathered again. They each boasted about the treasure they had.
The oldest brother brought a telescope. "I found a telescope which can see far away."
The second brother brought a flying carpet." I found a flying carpet that can be anywhere."
The third brother said." I found an apple that cures all diseases."
The brothers were amazed at the treasures they found. "Let's see what we can do with our treasures now." The brothers all nodded.
The oldest brother looked through his telescope and saw a palace in the distance. A princess was lying in bed sick. The second opened his carpet and said. "Let's ride this carpet and go to the palace." The three brothers went to the palace on the flying carpet to save the sick princess.
The three brothers met the king and told him why they had some. The king said. "How commendable. If you cure the princess, I will let one of you marry the princess." The youngest brother gave the princess the apple he found..
The princess had been sick for a long time, but with one bite of the apple, she was cured.
The king hugged the princess with joy. "Okay, as promised, one of you can marry the princess." The brothers each wanted the other to marry the princess. No matter how pretty and princess was, the brothers thought their loyalty was more important.
The king was moved and gave them gold and silver and high positions. The three brothers lived happily ever after.

"Oh, no! Here I am at an American family's home at the dinner table. There are all kinds of plates, saucers, cups, and silverware at my place. Which should I use for which food? Should I sit down first or wait for the host to invite me? Should I have brought a gift? Someone please tell me what to do!"
Have you ever been in or had a nightmare about this situation? Don't worry! This article will help steer you through the rocks and reefs of Anglo-American table manners so that if you are ever abroad in Canada or the United States, or at someone's home from one of those countries, you will feel right at home.
It is important to distinguish what kind of occasion you will be attending before you plan for a pleasant evening. Most Anglo-Americans enjoy entertaining at home, but they don't enjoy stuffy, formal dinners. They invite their friends over for a fun evening, not as a test of one's knowledge of cultural traditions. If, however, you are invited to a formal affair, such as a so-called "sit-down" dinner, you may want to know in advance some basic rules of "black tie" etiquette.
The first thing to remember when attending a dinner at a Western home is that you are the guest and that you are a foreigner. No one will invite you if he does not really want you to enter his "castle," so you can be sure that you are wanted. Additionally, as you do not come from the same country or culture as your host, he or she or they will surely be aware of this, and will be very forgiving if you unintentionally do or say something which would otherwise offend them. Keeping these two simple tips in mind should greatly ease your concern about being present at a dinner in someone else's home.
Before arriving at your host's home, you may want to make sure of three things. First, be a few minutes late, say, about five to ten minutes if possible. Never be early, as the host may not have everything prepared yet. Nor should you be more than 20 minutes late. Your host may begin to worry about whether you are able to attend the dinner or not. Next, as to whether to bring a gift, in most informal gatherings, it is not necessary. If you like, you can bring some fruit or sweets, or, especially if there is a hostess, some flowers. These are thoughtful, cheerful gifts sure to please. Do not bring alcoholic beverages unless you are sure of your host's or hostess's preferences in drinks. Above all, do not spend a lot of money, and never give money. As we say in English, "It's the thought that counts." Finally, wear comfortable clothing. One can overdress as well as appear sloppy. For a special occasion or religious holiday, such as a retirement party or Christmas, a tie and jacket would be suitable for the gentlemen and a dress or sweater and skirt for the ladies.
就像我们在英文中说的 "It's the thought that counts."(“礼轻情意重”)。
For more formal affairs, you will probably be told what to wear, such as "formal dress requested," etc. A tie and jacket or tuxedo for the gents and an evening gown for the ladies would be in order here. If you are unsure what to wear, you can always ask the host. Gifts are seldom appropriate for these affairs, unless for a wedding reception, at which gifts are more customary than cash.
Your host in his home will usually motion you where to sit. At formal gatherings, name cards are sometimes provided, or you will be told where to sit. Do not be alarmed by a great deal of cutlery: simply start from the outside and work your way in. Formal affairs often have several courses of food with the appropriate cutlery for each dish. There is no harm in checking with your neighbor to see what implement he is using. After all, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." It is customary to ask others to pass dishes to you for self-serving; at a formal dinner party, there is usually catering (service). Again, do not hesitate to ask others for information or advice. They are usually pleased to help you.
The most important piece of advice is this: enjoy yourself. No host enjoys seeing nervous or fearful guests who are struggling to "do the right thing" at his home or expensive formal dinner party. Watch others or ask for their advice, and join in the conversation and good times as best you can. If you do, after the first such evening out, you will certainly look forward to the next!

It had been hard for him that spake it to have put more truth and untruth together in few words, than in that speech, Whatsoever is delighted in solitude, is either a wild beast or a god. For it is most true, that a natural and secret hatred, and aversation towards society, in any man, hath somewhat of the savage beast; but it is most untrue, that it should have any character at all, of the divine(神圣的) nature; except it proceed, not out of a pleasure in solitude, but out of a love and desire to sequester a man's self, for a higher conversation: such as is found to have been falsely and feignedly in some of the heathen; as Epimenides the Canadian, Numa the Roman, Empedocles the Sicilian, and Apollonius of Tyana, and truly and really, in divers of the ancient hermits and holy fathers of the church. But little do men perceive what solitude is, and how far it extendeth.
For a crowd is not company; and faces are but a gallery of pictures; and talk but a tinkling cymbal, where there is no love. The Latinadage meeteth with it a little: Magna civitas , magna solitudo; because in a great town friends are scattered; so that there is not that fellowship, for the most part, which is in less neighborhoods. But we may go further, and affirm most truly, that it is a mere andmiserable solitude to want true friends; without which the world is but a wilderness; and even in this sense also of solitude, whosoever in the frame of his nature and affections, is unfit for friendship, he taketh it of the beast, and not from humanity.
A principal fruit of friendship, is the ease and discharge of the fulness and swellings(膨胀) of the heart, which passions of all kinds do cause and induce. We know diseases of stoppings, and suffocations, are the most dangerous in the body; and it is not much otherwise in the mind; you may take sarza to open the liver, steel to open the spleen, flowers of sulphur for the lungs, castoreum(海狸香) for the brain; but no receipt openeth the heart, but a true friend; to whom you may impart griefs, joys, fears, hopes, suspicions, counsels, and whatsoever lieth upon the heart to oppress it, in a kind of civil shrift or confession

The Dragon Boat Festival, the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, has had a history of more than 2,000 years. It is usually in June in the Gregorian calendar.
粽子tsung-tse:Glutinous rice filled with meat, nuts or bean paste and wrapped in bamboo leaves. It is associated with Dragon Boat Festival with historical meaning. The custom of eating zongzi is now popular in North and South Korea, Japan and Southeast Asian nations.
Adults drink Xiong Huang Wine, which can fend off evil spirits.
“Dragon boat racing is an indispensable part of the festival, held all over the country. As the gun is fired, people will see racers in dragon-shaped canoes pulling the oars harmoniously and hurriedly, accompanied by rapid drums, speeding toward their destination.
On Dragon Boat Festival, parents also need to dress their children up with a perfume pouch. They first sew little bags with colorful silk cloth, then fill the bags with perfumes or herbal medicines, and finally string them with silk threads. The perfume pouch will be hung around the neck or tied to the front of a garment as an ornament. They are said to be able to ward off evil.
挂艾叶菖蒲hang branches of moxa and calamus around the doors of their homes 和悬钟馗像display portraits of evil's nemesis, Chung Kuei都是为了驱疾避凶,讨个吉利。
some holidays are so much fun that they catch on outside of their culture. the most obvious example is probably christmas, which is celebrated around the world by people who aren’t even christian. similarly, in recent years, the dragon boat festival has moved beyond china to become an international holiday celebrated by people who may know little about the holiday’s origins.
the dragon boat festival is one of three major chinese holidays, along with the spring and moon festivals. of the three, it is possibly the oldest, dating back to the warring states period in 227 b.c. the festival commemorates qu yuan, a minister in the service of the chu emperor. despairing over corruption at court, qu threw himself into a river. townspeople jumped into their boats and tried in vain to save him. then, hoping to distract hungry fish from his body, the people scattered rice on the water.
over the years, the story of qu’s demise transformed into the traditions of racing dragon boats and eating zongzi – a kind of rice wrapped in bamboo leaves. the races have certainly captured the imagination of people from all over the world. every spring there are nearly 60 dragon boat races held outside of china in cities from vancouver to sydney, from gdańsk, poland to cape town, south africa. canada alone has nearly 50 dragon boat teams and germany has nearly 30.
so what is it about the dragon boat festival that appeals to foreigners? “it’s an unusual sport,” says one racer from germany. “it’s not like everybody’s doing it. that’s one of the reasons that there’s such great team spirit in a dragon boat team – everybody feels like we’re doing something special.” and what about the zongzi? “ehhh, they’re not bad, i guess,” he says. “something of an acquired taste. i just haven’t really acquired it yet.”

There are three little pigs。 They live in a small house with their mother。 "This house is too small。 The three of you must leave home。 You must build your own homes," says the mother pig one day。
The first little pig gets some hay。 "I will build a house of hay," he says。 "It will not be hard。 My house will be easy to make。 Then, I will go play。"
"I will use sticks to make a house," says the second little pig。 "It will be easy。 Then, I will go play with my brother。" The second little pig quickly builds his home。 He goes outside to play。
" I will build my houseof bricks。 It will take a long time," says the third little pig。 He builds his house。 It is hard work, but the house is strong。
One day, the three little pigs see some footprints。 They are the big bad wolf's footprints。 The little pigs run to their homes。 They are afraid of the big bad wolf。 He eats little pigs。
The big bad wolf goes to the first little pig's house。 The house is made of hay。 "Little pig, little pig, let me come in!" says the wolf。
"No way! I will not let you in," says the little pig。
"If you don't let me in, I will blow your house down!" says the wolf。 The wolf blows hard。 The house falls down。 The first little pig runs away。 He runs to the second little pig's house。
The second little pig's house is made of sticks。 The first little pig and the second little pig are in the house。 They are both very afraid。
"Little pigs, little pigs, let me come in!" says the wolf。
"No way! We will not let you in," say the two little pigs。
"If you don't let me in, I will blow your house down!" says the wolf。 The wolf blows down the second little pig's house。 The stick house is easy to blow down。 The two little pigs run to the third little pig's house。
The wolf goes to the third little pig's house。 The house is strong。 It is made of bricks。 "Little pigs, little pigs, let me come in!" says the wolf。"No way! We will not let you in," say the three little pigs。
"If you don't let me in, I will blow your house down!" says the wolf。 The wolf is hungry。 He wants to eat all of the three little pigs。 He blows and blows and blows and blows, but the house cannot be blown down。
The wolf is angry。 "I will get all of you," says the wolf。 He climbs on top of the house。 He goes down the chimney。 The third little pig makes a fire。
"quduwenwwww!" cries the wolf。 The fire burns the wolf, and he runs away。 The three little pigs never see him again。
The next day, the third little pig helps his brothers。 He helps them build houses。 They all build houses of brick。 It takes a long time, but no one can ever blow their houses down。
The wolf runs far away。 He doesn't eat little pigs anymore。 It is too dangerous。

Last year around Halloween, I was invited to participate in a carnival for Tuesday’s Child, anorganization that helps children with the AIDS virus. I was asked to attend because I’m on atelevision show; I went because I care. I don't think that most of the kids recognize me as acelebrity. They just thought of me as a big kid who came to play with them for the day. I thinkI liked it better that way.
At the carnival they had all kinds of booths. I was drawn to one in particular because of all thechildren that had gathered there. At this booth, anyone who wanted to could paint a square.Later that square was going to be sewn together with the others, to make a quilt. The quiltwould be presented to a man who had dedicated his life to this organization and would soonbe retiring.
They gave everyone fabric paints in bright, beautiful colors and asked the kids to paintsomething that would make the quilt beautiful. As I looked around at all the squares, I saw pinkhearts and bright blue clouds, beautiful orange sunrises and green and purple flowers. Thepictures were all bright, positive and uplifting. All except for one.
The boy sitting next to me was painting a heart, but it was dark, empty, lifeless. It lacked thebright, vibrant colors that his fellow artists had used.
At first I thought maybe he took the only paint that was left and it just happened to be dark. But when I asked him about it, he said his heart was that color because his own heart felt dark.I asked him why and he told me that he was very sick. Not only was he very sick, but his momwas very sick also. He said that his sickness was not ever going to get better and neither washis mom's. He looked straight into my eyes and said, “There is nothing anyone can do that willhelp.”
I told him I was sorry that he was sick and I could certainly understand why he was so sad. Icould even understand why he had made his heart a dark color. But...I told him that it isn'ttrue that there is nothing anyone can do to help. Other people may not be able to make him orhis mom better...but we can do things like give bear hugs, which in my experience can reallyhelp when you are feeling sad. I told him that if he would like, I would be happy to give him oneso he could see what I meant. He instantly crawled into my lap and I thought my own heartwould burst with the love I felt for this sweet little boy.
He sat there for a long time and when he had had enough, he jumped down to finish hiscoloring. I asked him if he felt any better and he said that he did, but he was still sick andnothing would change that. I told him I understood. I walked away feeling sad, but recommittedto this cause. I would do whatever I could to help.
As the day was coming to an end and I was getting ready to head home, I felt a tug on myjacket. I turned around and standing there with a smile on his face was the little boy. He said, “My heart is changing colors. It is getting brighter...I think those bear hugs really do work.”
On my way home I felt my own heart and realized it, too, had changed to a brighter color.

Imagination is the ability to form a mental image of something that is not perceived through thesenses. It is the ability of the mind to built mental scenes, objects or events that do not exist, are not present or have happened in the past. Memory is actually a manifestation of imagi-nation. Everyone possesses some imagi- nation ability. In some it may be highly developed andin others it may manifest in a weaker form. It manifests in various degrees in various people.
Imagination makes it possible to experience a whole world inside the mind. It gives the ability tolook at any situation from a different point of view, and enables one to mentally explore the pastand the future.
It manifests in various forms, one of which is daydreaming. Though too much idle daydreamingmay make one impractical, some daydreaming, when not being en- gaged in something thatrequires attention, provides some temporary happiness, calm- ness and relief from stress.
In your imagination you can travel anywhere in the speed of light without any obstacles. It canmake you feel free, though temporarily, and only in the mind, from tasks, difficulties andunpleasant circum- stances.
Imagination is not limited only to seeing pictures in the mind. It includes all the five senses andthe feelings. One can imagine a sound, taste, smell, a physical sensation or a feeling oremotion. For some people it is easier to see mental pictures, others find it easier to imagine afeeling, and some are more comfortable imagining the sensation of one of the five senses.Training of the imagination gives the ability to combine all the senses.
A developed and strong imagination does not make you a daydreamer and impractical. On thecontrary, it strengthens your creative abilities, and is a great tool for recreating andremodeling your world and life.
This is a great power that can change your whole life. It is used extensively in magic, creativevisualization and affirmations. It is the creator of circumstances and events. When you know howto work with it, you can make your hearts’ desires come true.
Imagination has a great role and value in each one’s life. It is much more than just idledaydreaming. We all use it, whether consciously or unconsciously, in most of our daily affairs. We use our imagination when-ever we plan a party, a trip, our work or a meeting. We use itwhen we describe an event, explain how to arrive to a certain street, write, tell a story or cooka cake.
Imagination is a crea- tive power that is necessary for inventing an instrument, designing adress or a build- ing, painting a picture or writing a book. The creative power of imaginationhas an im- portant role in the achievement of success in any field. What we imagine with faithand feelings comes into being. It is the power beyond creative visualization, positive think- ingand affirmations.
Visualizing an object or a situation, and repeating often this mental image, attracts the object orsituation into our lives. This opens for us new, vast and fascinating opportunities.
This means that we should think only in a positive manner about our desires, other- wise wemay create and attract into our lives, events, situations and people that we don’t really want. This is actually what most of us do, because we don’t use the power of imagination correctly.
If you do not recognize the importance of the power of the imagination, and let it run riot, yourlife may not be as happy and successful as you would have wanted it to be.
Lack of understanding of the power of the imagination is responsible for the suffering, incompetence, difficulties, failures and unhappiness people experience. For some reason, mostpeople are inclined to think in a negative way. They do not expect success. They expect theworst, and when they fail, they believe that fate is against them. This attitude can be changed, and then life will improve accordingly.
Understanding how to use your imagination correctly, and putting this knowledge into practice, for your own and others’ benefit, will put you on the golden path to success, satisfaction andhappiness.

Is something so bad that she's afraid to tell me on the phone?
The note was short:
"Dear Mom: In case you were wondering,
'I am always here to understand you.' Love,Maura.

Through the cold winter wasteland a man trudged, leaning into the harsh wind which spitefully tried to force him back. He was covered from head to toe in layers of thick clothing, layers of protection against the harsh environment. On he fought, searching, searching. He was working so hard. This must be the way.
In the distance he saw what looked like steam rising out of the ground. It rose a few feet and then was quickly whipped away by the biting wind. He altered his course and turned towards the steam, gaining some blessed relief as he turned his chapped face out of the gale.
As he got closer, he thought he could make out voices. Their tone was unfamiliar to him - musical, relaxed and warm - their melody enticed him closer. Finally he got close enough to peer through the mist.
There before him was a remarkable sight. In the midst of the frozen wasteland, cut into the ground was a large pool. Several people were in the pool, they seemed to be floating easily without any effort. As they saw him approach, a woman called out to him.
"Come in here. It is lovely and warm. You can just lie back and relax," said the woman.
"I can't. There are no steps." The man replied.
"Just jump in. It really is lovely in here. Come on. Theoure's plenty of room for another." Another of the floaters joined in the persuasion.
"But what if I don't like it, how will I get out? The sides are too high to reach up to."
"Believe me, you won't want to get out. Come on. It is so good in here."
But he decided not to jump in. And that was a wise decision.
There're many things and people in life like this pool. They promise you life can be easy.
But in fact, they are traps that you can't come back from.
Life is hard. Stay wise. And fight.

One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class walking home from school. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must really be a nerd." I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friend tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on. As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye. As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks. They really should get lives.
He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!" There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude. I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived. As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to private school before now.
We talked all the way home, and I carried his books. He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. I asked him if he wanted to play football on Saturday with me and my friends. He said yes. The more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him. And my friends thought the same of him.Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again. I stopped him and said, "Dim boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!" He just laughed and handed me half the books.
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends. When we were seniors, we began to think about college. Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I was going to Duke. I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
Kyle was valedictorian of our class. I teased him all the time about being a nerd. He had to prepare a speech for graduation. I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak.
Graduation day, I saw Kyle.. He looked great. He was one of those guys that really found themselves during high school. He had more dates than me and all the girls loved him! Boy, sometimes I was jealous.
Today was one of those days. I can see that he was nervous about his speech. So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!" He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled."Thanks," he said. As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began. "Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years. Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach.... but mostly your friends. I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give him or her. I am going to tell you a story." I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met. He had planned to kill himself over the weekend. He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home. He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile. "Thankfully, I was saved. My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment. I saw his Mom and Dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile. Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.
Never underestimate the power of your actions. With one small gesture you can change a person's life. For better or for worse.
