There was a little boy with a bad temper. His fathergave him a bag of nails and told him that every timehe lost his temper, to hammer a nail in the backfence.
The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into thefence.
Then it gradually dwindled down. He discovered itwas easier to hold his temper than to drive thosenails into the fence.
Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all. He told his father about it andthe father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to holdhis temper.
The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails weregone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, "You have donewell, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When yousay things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and drawit out. It won't matter how many times you say I'm sorry, the wound is still there. A verbalwound is as bad as a physical one.
Friends are a very rare jewel, indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear, they share a word of praise, and they always want to open their hearts to us.Show your friends how much you care.

Imagination is the ability to form a mental image of something that is not perceived through the senses. It is the ability of the mind to built mental scenes, objects or events that do not exist, are not present or have happened in the past. Memory is actually a manifestation of imagi- nation. Everyone possesses some imagi- nation ability. In some it may be highly developed and in others it may manifest in a weaker form. It manifests in various degrees in various people.
Imagination makes it possible to experience a whole world inside the mind. It gives the ability to look at any situation from a different point of view, and enables one to mentally explore the past and the future.
It manifests in various forms, one of which is daydreaming. Though too much idle daydreaming may make one impractical, some daydreaming, when not being en- gaged in something that requires attention, provides some temporary happiness, calm- ness and relief from stress.
In your imagination you can travel anywhere in the speed of light without any obstacles. It can make you feel free, though temporarily, and only in the mind, from tasks, difficulties and unpleasant circum- stances.
Imagination is not limited only to seeing pictures in the mind. It includes all the five senses and the feelings. One can imagine a sound, taste, smell, a physical sensation or a feeling or emotion. For some people it is easier to see mental pictures, others find it easier to imagine a feeling, and some are more comfortable imagining the sensation of one of the five senses. Training of the imagination gives the ability to combine all the senses.
A developed and strong imagination does not make you a daydreamer and impractical. On the contrary, it strengthens your creative abilities, and is a great tool for recreating and remodeling your world and life.
This is a great power that can change your whole life. It is used extensively in magic, creative visualization and affirmations. It is the creator of circumstances and events. When you know how to work with it, you can make your hearts’ desires come true.
Imagination has a great role and value in each one’s life. It is much more than just idle daydreaming. We all use it, whether consciously or unconsciously, in most of our daily affairs. We use our imagination when-ever we plan a party, a trip, our work or a meeting. We use it when we describe an event, explain how to arrive to a certain street, write, tell a story or cook a cake.
Imagination is a crea- tive power that is necessary for inventing an instrument, designing a dress or a build- ing, painting a picture or writing a book. The creative power of imagination has an im- portant role in the achievement of success in any field. What we imagine with faith and feelings comes into being. It is the power beyond creative visualization, positive think- ing and affirmations.
Visualizing an object or a situation, and repeating often this mental image, attracts the object or situation into our lives. This opens for us new, vast and fascinating opportunities.
This means that we should think only in a positive manner about our desires, other- wise we may create and attract into our lives, events, situations and people that we don’t really want. This is actually what most of us do, because we don’t use the power of imagination correctly.
If you do not recognize the importance of the power of the imagination, and let it run riot, your life may not be as happy and successful as you would have wanted it to be.
Lack of understanding of the power of the imagination is responsible for the suffering, incompetence, difficulties, failures and unhappiness people experience. For some reason, most people are inclined to think in a negative way. They do not expect success. They expect the worst, and when they fail, they believe that fate is against them. This attitude can be changed, and then life will improve accordingly.
Understanding how to use your imagination correctly, and putting this knowledge into practice, for your own and others’ benefit, will put you on the golden path to success, satisfaction and happiness.

It is a miserable state of mind, to have few things to desire, and many things to fear: and yet that commonly is the case of kings; who being at the highest, want matter of desire, which makes their minds more languishing; and have many representations of perils and shadows, which makes their minds the less clear.
And this is one reason also of that effect, which the scripture speaketh of; that the king's heart is inscrutable. For multitude of jealousies, and lack of some predominant desire, that should marshal and put in order all the rest, maketh any man's heart hard to find, or sound. Hence it comes likewise, that princes, many times, make themselves desires, and set their hearts upon toys: sometimes upon a building; sometimes upon erecting of an order, sometimes upon the advancing of a person; sometimes upon obtaining excellency in some art, or feat of the hand; as Nero for playing on the harp, Domitian for certainty of the hand with the arrow, Commodus for playing at fence, Caracalla for driving chariots, and the like. This seemeth incredible unto those that know not the principle; that the mind of man is more cheered, and refreshed, by profiting in small things, than by standing at a stay in great We see also that kings, that have been fortunate conquerors in their first years; it being not possible for them to go forward infinitely, but that they must have some check or arrest in their fortunes; turn in their latter years to be superstitious and melancholy: as did Alexander the Great;Dioclesian; and in our memory, Charles the Fifth; and others: for he that is used go forward, and findeth a stop, falleth out of his own favour, and is not the thing he was.
To speak now of the true temper of empire: it is a thing rare, and hard to keep: for both temper and distemper consist of contraries. But it is one thing to mingle contraries, another to interchange them. The answer of Apollonius to Vespasian is full of excellent instruction;
Vespasian asked him; What was Nero's overthrow? He answered;Nero could touch and tune the harp well; but in government, sometimes he used to wind the pins too high, sometimes to let them down too low. And certain it is, that nothing destroyeth authority so much, as the unequal and untimely interchange of power pressed too far, and relaxed too much.
This is true; that the wisdom of all these latter times in princes' affairs, is rather fine deliveries, and shiftings of dangers and mischiefs, when they are near, than solid and grounded courses to keep them aloof. But this is but to try masteries with fortune: and let men beware, how they neglect, and suffer matter of trouble to be prepared: for no man can forbid the spark, nor tell whence it may come.
The difficulties in princes' business are many and great; but the greatest difficulty, is often in their own mind. For it is common with princes (saith Tacitus) to will contradictories. For it is the solecism of power, to think to command the end, and yet not to endure the mean.
Kings have to deal with their neighbours; their wives; their children; their prelates or clergy; their nobles; their second-nobles or gentlemen; their merchants; their commons; and their men of war, and from all these arise dangers, if care and circumspection be not used.
First for their neighbours; there can no general rule be given (the occasions are so variable), save one; which ever holdeth; which is, that princes do keep due sentinel, that none of their neighbours do overgrow so (by increase of territory, by embracing of trade, by approaches, or the like), as they become more able to annoy them, than they were. And this is, generally, the work of standing councils to foresee, and to hinder it During that triumvirate of kings. King Henry Vffl of England, Francis I, King of France, and Charles V, Emperor, there was such a watch kept, that none of the three could win a palm of ground, but the other two would straightways balance it, either by confederation, or, if need were, by a war: and would not, in any wise, take up peace at interest And the like was done by that league (which, Guicciardine saith, was the security of Italy) made between Ferdinando King of Naples; Lorenzius Medices, and Ludovicus Sforza, potentates, the one of Florence, the other of Milan.
Neither is the opinion of some of the schoolmen to be received; that a war cannot justly be made, but upon a precedent injury, or provocation. For there is no question, but a just fear of an imminent danger, though there be no blow given, is a lawful cause of a war.
For their wives; there are cruel examples of them. Livia is enfamed for the poisoning of her husband: Roxolana, Solyman's wife, was the destruction of that renowned prince. Sultan Mustapha; and otherwise troubled his house, and succession: Edward the Second of England his queen had the principal hand, in the deposing and murder of her husband.
This kind of danger is then to be feared, chiefly, when the wives have plots for the raising of their own children; or else that they be adulteresses.
For their children: the tragedies, likewise, of dangers from them, have been many.
And generally, the entering of fathers into suspicion of their children, hath been ever unfortunate. The destruction of Mustapha (that we named before) was so fatal to Solyman's line, as the succession of the Turks, from Solyman, until this day, is suspected to be untrue, and of strange blood; for mat Selymus the Second was thought to be supposititious. The destruction of Crispus, a young prince of rare towardness, by Constantinus the Great, his father, was in like manner fatal to his house; for both Constantinus, and Constance, his sons, died violent deaths; and Constantius, his other son, did little better; who died, indeed, of sickness, but after that Julianus had taken arms against him. The destruction of Demetrius, son to Philip the Second, of Macedonia, turned upon the father, who died of repentance. And many like examples there are: but few, or none, where the fathers had good by such distrust; except it were, where me sons were up in open arms against them; as was Selymus the First against Baiazet: and the three sons of Henry the Second, King of England.
For their prelates; when they are proud and great, there is also danger from them: as it was, in the times of Anselmus, and Thomas Becket, Archbishops of Canterbury; who with their croziers, did almost try it, with the king's sword; and yet they had to deal with stout and haughty kings; William Rufus, Henry the First, and Henry the Second. The danger is not from that state, but where it hath a dependence of foreign authority; or where the churchmen come in, and are elected, not by the collation of the king, or particular patrons, but by the people.
For their nobles; to keep them at a distance, it is not amiss; but to depress them, may make a king more absolute, but less safe; and less able to perform anything that he desires. I have noted it, in my history of King Henry the Seventh of England, who depressed his nobility; whereupon, it came to pass that his times were full of difficulties, and troubles; for the nobility, though they continued loyal unto him, yet did they not cooperate with him in his business. So that in effect, he was fain to do all things, himself.
For their second nobles; there is not much danger from them, being a body dispersed. They may sometimes discourse high, but that doth little hurt: besides, they are a counterpoise to the higher nobility, that they grow not too potent: and lastly, being the most immediate in authority, with the common people, they do best temper popular commotions.
For their merchants; they are venaporta; and if they flourish not, a kingdom may have good limbs, but will have empty veins, and nourish lime. Taxes, and imposts upon them, do seldom good to the king's revenue; for that that he wins in the hundred, he loseth in the shire; the particular rates being increased, but the total bulk of trading rather decreased.
For their commons; there is little danger from them, except it be, where they have great and potent heads; or where you meddle with the point of religion; or their customs, or means of life.
For their men of war, it is a dangerous state, where they live and remain in a body, and are used to donatives; whereof we see examples in the Janissaries, and Pretorian bands of Rome: but trainings of men, and arming them in several places, and under several commanders, and without donatives, are things of defence, and no danger.
Princes are like to heavenly bodies, which cause good or evil times;and which have much veneration, but no rest All precepts concerming kings, are in effect comprehended in those two remembrances: memento quod es homo', and memento quod es deus, or vice da', the one bridleth their power, and the other their will.

There is a wisdom in this, beyond the rules of physic: a man's own observation, what he finds good of, and what he finds hurt of, is the best physic to preserve health.
But it is a safer conclusion to say; this agreeth not well with me, therefore I will not continue it; than this; I fmd no offence of this, therefore I may use it. For strength of nature in youth passeth over many excesses, which are owing a man till his age. Discern of the coming on of years, and think not, to do the same things still; for age will not be defied. Beware of sudden change in any great point of diet, and if necessity enforce it, fit the rest to it. For it is a secret, both in nature, and state; that it is safer to change many things, than one. Examine thy customs, of diet, sleep, exercise, apparel, and the like; and try in anything thou shall judge hurtful, to discontinue it by little and little; but so, as if thou doest fmd any inconvenience by the change, thou come back to it again: for it is hard to distinguish, that which is generally held good, and wholesome, from that, which is good particularly, and fit for thine own body.
To be free minded, and cheerfully disposed, at hours of meat, and of sleep, and of exercise, is one of the best precepts of long lasting. As for the passions and studies of the mind; avoid envy; anxious fears; anger fretting inwards; subtle and knotty inquisitions; joys, and exhilarations in excess; sadness not communicated. Entertain hopes; mirth rather than joy; variety of delights, rather than surfeit of them; wonder, and admiration, and therefore novelties; studies that fill the mind with splendid and illustrious objects, as histories, fables, and contemplations of nature. If you fly physic in health altogether, it will be too strange for your body, when you shall need it If you make it too familiar, it will work no extraordinary effect, when sickness cometh. I commend rather some diet, for certain seasons, than frequent use of physic, except it be grown into a custom.
For those diets alter the body more, and trouble it less. Despise no new accident in your body, but ask opinion of it In sickness, respect health principally; and in health, action.
For those that put their bodies to endure in health, may in most sickness, which are not very sharp, be cured only with diet, and tendering. Celsus could never have spoken it as a physician, had he not been a wise man withal, when he giveth it, for one of the great precepts of health and lasting, that a man do vary, and interchange contraries; but with an inclination to the more benign extreme: use fasting, and full eating, but rather full eating; watching and sleep, but rather sleep;sitting, and exercise, but rather exercise; and the like.
So shall nature be cherished, and yet taught masteries. Physicians are some of them so pleasing, and conformable to the humour of the patient, as they press not the true cure of the disease; and some other are so regular, in proceeding according to art, for the disease, as they respect not sufficiently the condition of the patient Take one of a middle temper, or if it may not be found in one man, combine two of either sort: and forget not to call, as well the best acquainted with your body, as the best reputed of for his faculty.

Ready or not, some day it will all come to an end. There will be no more sunrises, no days, no hours or minutes. All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten, will pass to someone else.
Your wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance. It will not matter what you owned or what you were owed.
Your grudges, resentments, frustrations, and jealousies will finally disappear.
So, too, your hopes, ambitions, plans, and to-do lists will all expire. The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away.
It won't matter where you came from, or on what side of the tracks you lived.
It won't matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant. Your gender, skin color, ethnicity will be irrelevant.
So what will matter? How will the value of your days be measured?
What will matter is not what you bought, but what you built; not what you got, but what you gave.
What will matter is not your success, but your significance.
What will matter is not what you learned, but what you taught.
What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage and sacrifice that enriched, empowered or encouraged others to emulate your example.
What will matter is not your competence, but your character.
What will matter is not how many people you knew, but how many will feel a lasting loss when you're gone.
What will matter is not your memories, but the memories of those who loved you.
What will matter is how long you will be remembered, by whom and for what.
Living a life that matters doesn't happen by accident.
It's not a matter of circumstance but of choice.
Choose to live a life that matters.

When the young American composer Daniel Gregory Mason came to Boston to interview thegreat pianist and composer Ignacy Jan Paderewski , there was trouble from the start.
Because of a misunderstanding Mason was two-and-a-half hours late for his meeting with thegreat pianist. Mason was waiting in the hotel lobby while Paderewski was upstairs, getting moreand more aggravated by Mason’s tardiness. Finally Mason went up to see Paderewski and foundhim cordial enough, but Paderewski’s wife was cold and standoffish. Mason felt awkward andself-conscious. He complimented Paderewski on his “Variations and Fugue on an OriginalTheme.” Then he added: “Just so you don’t think that’s empty flattery, I’ll tell you frankly thatI do not care so much for some of your early pieces.”
Paderewski’s wife gave Mason a stony look. “What pieces? What do you not care for?”
Mason got in deeper. “Well, for example, I do not care so much for the ‘A Minor Concerto’.”
Her gaze was unwavering . “The concerto is one of my favorites among my husband’scompositions. I love it more and more.”
Valiantly , Mason complimented Paderewski’s use of French impressionism.
Now Paderewski himself spoke. “I utterly repudiate any debt to French impressionism. I donot believe in the modern French school, because it is not founded in tradition. It is erratic, bizarre, wayward. ”
At last Mason ventured to show Paderewski a movement of his new violin sonata. Paderewskishook hands with him about eight times as he read through the sonata, singing the melodyand exclaiming “beautiful!” Finally, with his music, Daniel Gregory Mason had won over themaster.

Silence is soundlessness; silence exists in different forms.
An empty head or a blank mind which leads to speechlessness--that is silence.
Enthusiasm fades like dying embers and thus leads to cynicism and indifference to life, whicharouses neither happiness nor sadness, neither worries nor anger, and which costs people theirinterest in and desire for anything--that is silence.
Despite all the experiences of love and hate, of disorientation and reorientation, of order-giving that was answered by hundreds and call-issuing that was not answered by a single soul, there is not a word uttered, but only a clam eye that watches on this world--that is alsosilence.
Worries and sufferings, tastes of changes and vicissitudes of the world, footprints left inmountains and valleys and noises of rivers and oceans cherished in the heart are all but hiddenunrevealed--that is still silence.
Either an invaluable Italian violin or a reed whistle cut out casually would remain silent ifthey are not played, although the connotations of their silences differ greatly. For even thoughthey are never touched by anybody, you can still imagine the vastly different sounds they canpossibly produce.
A flawless jade ornament, or a coarse, gross brick will always remain silent if it is leftuntouched, but who can draw an equal sign between them?
Indeed, for a living being there is no such thing as true silence, for silence itself is arevelation of the mind and the heart, an echo of the soul of a different form.
Some people use silence as a disguise of the emptiness of the head.
Some use it as a means to depict their disorientation and melancholy.
And some use it as a way of expressing their angers and sorrows.
Silence usually is ephemeral. It reminds one of the bronze bells dangling from a pagoda'seaves; on windless days they are a decoration upon the age-weathered beauty, but with windthey give out wonderful tinkling and jingling metallurgic sounds, as if echoing age-old stories oflong, long ago...
Do you not think the same of silent people?
They say that "silence is golden", but of what nature is this "gold"? It can include integrity, honesty and kindness; it can stand for indifference to and detachment from fame andfortune; but it can also act as an excuse for hypocrisy, slyness and cowardice... theglittering of gold may not necessarily be the most brilliant lustre in the world.
Can it be that permanent silence is only represented by death?
Perhaps even death cannot represent true silence, for the carrier of the soul can turn into dust,so that the sincere and wise voices from the bottom of the heart will trigger long-lasting echoesin the seas of human hearts...

It cannot be denied, but outward accidents conduce much to fortune, favour, opportunity, death of others, occasion fitting virtue. But chiefly, tile mould of a man's fortune is in his ownhands.(Faber quisque fortunae suae; saith the poet )
And the most frequent of external causes is, that the folly of one man is the fortune ofanother. For no man prospers so suddenly, as by others' errors. Serpens nisi serpentermcomederit non fit draco. Overt and apparent virtues bring forth praise; but there be secret andhidden virtues, that bring forth fortune; certain deliveries of a man's self, which have noname. The Spanish name, desemboltura, partly expresseth them: when there be not stonds, nor resdveness in a man's nature; but that the wheels of his mind keep way with the wheels ofhis fortune. For so Livy (after he had described Cato Major, in these words; in ilh viro, tanturnrobur corporis et animi fiit, ut quocwique loco natus esset ,fortunarus sibi facturs videretur)falleth upon that, that he had versatile ingenium Therefore, if a man look sharply, andattentively, he shall see fortune: for though she be blind, yet she is not invisible.
The way of fortune is like the Milken Way in the sky; which is a meeting or knot of a numberof small stars; not seen asunder, but giving light together. So are there a number of little, andscarce discerned virtues, or rather faculties and customs, that make men fortunate.
The Italians note some of them, such as a man would little think. When they speak of one thatcannot do amiss, they will throw in, into his other conditions, that he hath poco di motto. Andcertainly, there be not two more fortunate properties; than to have a little of the fool; and nottoo much of the honest. Therefore, extreme lovers of their country, or masters, were neverfortunate, neither can they be. For when a man placeth his thoughts without himself, he goethnot his own way. An hasty fortune maketh an enterpriser, and remover (the French hath itbetter, entrepreneur, or remuamt), but the exercised fortune maketh the able man. Fortuneis to be honoured, and respected, and it be but for her daughters, Confidence, and Reputation. For those two felicity hreedeth: the first within a man's self; the latter, in others towards him.
All wise men, to decline me envy of their own virtues, use to ascribe them to providence andfortune; for so they may the better assume them: and besides, it is greatness in a man, to bethe care of me higher powers. So Caesar said to me pilot in the tempest, Caesarem portas, etfortunam ene. So Sulla chose the name of Felix, and not of Magnus. And it hath been noted, that those that ascribe openly too much to their own wisdom, and policy, end unfortunate. Itis written, that
Timotheus the Athenian, after he had, in the account he gave to the state of his government, often interlaced this speech, 'and in mis fortune had no part', never prospered in anything heundertook afterwards. Certainly, mere be, whose fortunes are like Homer's verses, that have aslide, and easiness, more than the verses of other poets: as Plutarch sailh of Timoleon'sfortune, in respect of that of Agesilaus, or Epaminondas. And that this should be, no doubt it ismuch in a man's self.

The sun has begun to set and I hang up the smile I’ve worn all day, though I will make sure itis the first thing I put back on in the morning just in case it is “that day.” I want her to see meat my very best.
I do the normal routine, eat dinner, clean the house, write—the usual stuff.
And then I lay down hoping to fall asleep quickly so my new day will hurry up and arrive. A newday with a brand new sun.
But as I lay there and wait for the world to turn half way around, I think about her. Andsometimes I smile, and sometimes that smile will turn into a snicker[窃笑], and then often thatsnicker will turn into a burst of laughter.
And then there are times I get that lump[块,团] in my throat and that tight feeling in mychest, and sometimes that feeling overwhelms[淹没] me and begins to turn into a tear, andoften that tear multiplies[增加] itself and I can no longer fight the feeling and I lose the battle.
Then somehow through either the joy or the sadness I drift[漂流] and find myself asleep. Thenthe dreams begin and keep me company[陪伴] until my new day arrives.
When I awake it’s with such excitement because I tell myself this could be the day that everyother day has led up to[作为……的准备] and the first day of the rest of my life. I quickly don[穿上,披上] my smile because I do so want her to see me at my very best. Then I look out thewindow because, even though I know it’s dawn, I still have to confirm I’ve been given anotherchance to find her.
And there it is…the sun, even when it’s cloudy; somehow I still see it. And it smiles at me and Isay, “Thank you,” and I smile back.
Then I ask myself, “Is this the day?” And the excitement rushes over me again. And then I askmyself, “Where’s it going to be?”
Maybe it’ll be at the water fountain[饮水器], and, unexpectedly, there I’ll find her, and muchmore than my thirst will be quenched[熄灭].
Maybe it’ll be at the grocery[杂货] store and there she’ll appear as I’m picking out fruit, andshe’ll show me the difference between fresh and spoiled. Then, from that moment, nothing thatI eat will ever taste the same because she’ll bring out the simplest beauties in everything I see, taste, smell, hear, or touch.
Or maybe today will be the day when my angel brings an item up to the cash register[收银机]without its price tag[标签]. And as I wait behind this angel with all the frustrated people whoare in such a hurry with their busy lives, I will find myself with such blessed extra time. Justenough time to start a conversation with this beautiful vision standing in front of me that Imight not otherwise have noticed, but, because of a “price check on register 5,” I was able tofind her.
Thank you for the sun, which began my new day. Thank you for granting me the faith when Iarose this morning that I would find her in this new day. But most of all, thank you for me nothaving to ever wait on another sunrise because whenever I want to see it, I will look at her andthere it shall always be, in her eyes; she will forever hold it for me.

Years ago a farmer owned land along the Atlantic seacoast. He constantly advertised for hired hands. Most people were reluctant to work on farms along the Atlantic. They dreaded the awful storms that raged across the Atlantic, wreaking havoc on the buildings and crops. As the farmer interviewed applicants for the job, he received a steady stream of refusals.
Finally, a short, thin man, well past middle age, approached the farmer. "Are you a good farmhand?" the farmer asked him.
"Well, I can sleep when the wind blows," answered the little man.
Although puzzled by this answer, the farmer, desperate for help, hired him. The little man worked well around the farm, busy from dawn to dusk, and the farmer felt satisfied with the man's work.
Then one night the wind howled loudly in from offshore. Jumping out of bed, the farmer grabbed a lantern and rushed next door to the hired hand's sleeping quarters. He shook the little man and yelled, "Get up! A storm is coming! Tie things down before they blow away!"
The little man rolled over in bed and said firmly, "No sir. I told you, I can sleep when the wind blows."
Enraged by the response, the farmer was tempted to fire him on the spot. Instead, he hurried outside to prepare for the storm. To his amazement, he discovered that all of the haystacks had been covered with tarpaulins. The cows were in the barn, the chickens were in the coops, and the doors were barred. The shutters were tightly secured. Everything was tied down. Nothing could blow away.
The farmer then understood what his hired hand meant, so he returned to his bed to also sleep while the wind blew.

“everything happens for the best,”my mother said whenever I faced disappointment.“If you can carry on,one day something good will happen. And you‘ll realize that it wouldn’t have happened if not for that previous disappointment.”
Mother was right,as I discovered after graduating from college in 1932.I had decided to try for a job in radio, then work my way up to sports announcer. I hitchhiked to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station-and got turned down every time.
In one studio,a kind lady told me that big stations couldn‘t risk hiring inexperienced person-“Go out in the sticks and find a small station that’ll give you a chance,”she said.
I thumbed home to Dixon,Illinois. While them was no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon,my father sad Montgomery Ward had opened a store and wanted a local athlete to manage its sports department. Since Dixon was where I had played high school football,I applied. The job sounded just right for me. But I wasn‘t hired.
My disappointment must have shown.“Everything happens for the best,”Mom reminded me. Dad offered me the car to job hunt. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport,Iowa. The program director,a wonderful Scotsman named Peter MacArthur, told me they had already hired an announcer.
As I left his office,my frustration boiled over. I asked a1oud,“How can a fellow get to be a sport announcer if he can‘t get a job in a radio station?”
I was waiting for the elevator when I heard MacArthur calling,“What was that you said about sports?Do you know anything about football?”Then he stood me before a microphone and asked me to broadcast an imaginary game.
On my way home,as I have many times since,I thought of my mother‘s words:“if you carry on,one day something good will happen. Something wouldn’t have happened if not for that previous disappointment”I often wonder what direction my life might have taken if I‘d gotten the job at Montgomery Ward.

When he told me he was leaving I felt like a vasewhich has just smashed. there were pieces of me allover the tidy, tan tiles. He kept talking, telling mewhy he was leaving, explaining it was for the best, Icould do better, it was his fault and not mine. I hadheard it before many times and yet somehow wasstill not immune; perhaps one did not becomeimmune to such felony.
He left and I tried to get on with my life. I filledthe kettle and put it on to boil, I took out my old red mug and filled it with coffee watching aseach coffee granule slipped in to the bone china. That was what my life had been like, endlessomissions of coffee granules, somehow never managing to make that cup of coffee.
Somehow when the kettle piped its finishing warning I pretended not to hear it. That''swhat Mike''s leaving had been like, sudden and with an awful finality. I would rather just wallowin uncertainty than have things finished. I laughed at myself. Imagine getting all philosophicaland sentimental about a mug of coffee. I must be getting old.
And yet it was a young woman who stared back at me from the mirror. A young woman fullof promise and hope, a young woman with bright eyes and full lips just waiting to take on theworld. I never loved Mike anyway. Besides there are more important things. More importantthan love, I insist to myself firmly. The lid goes back on the coffee just like closure on the wholeMike experience.
He doesn''t haunt my dreams as I feared that night. Instead I am flying far across fieldsand woods, looking down on those below me. Suddenly I fall to the ground and it is only when Iwake up that I realize I was shot by a hunter, brought down by the burden of not the bulletbut the soul of the man who shot it. I realize later, with some deGREe of understanding, thatMike was the hunter holding me down and I am the bird that longs to fly. The next night mydream is similar to the previous nights, but without the hunter. I fly free until I meet anotherbird who flies with me in perfect harmony. I realize with some relief that there is a bird outthere for me, there is another person, not necessarily a lover perhaps just a friend, but there issomeone out there who is my soul mate. I think about being a broken vase again and realizethat I have glued myself back together, what Mike has is merely a little part of my time in earth,a little understanding of my physical being. He has only, a little piece of me.

The sun is just rising in the morning of another day. What can I wish that this day may bring me? Nothing that shall make the world or others poorer, nothing at the expense of other men; but just those few things which in their coming do not stop me but touch me rather, as they pass and gather strength.
I wish that this day could bring me a few friends, who understand me, and yet remain my friends; I also wish that this day could bring me a work to do which has real value.
I wish that this day could bring me a mind unafraid to travel, even though the trail be not blazed, and I wish that this day could bring me an understanding heart.
I wish that this day could bring me a sight of the eternal hills, and the blue sea stretching to the horizon, and of something beautiful which the hands of men have made.
I wish that this day could bring me a sense of humor, and the power to laugh, a little leisure with nothing to do.
And I crave for a few moments of quiet, silent meditation in the morning of this day.
You must study to be frank with the world: frankness is the child of honesty and courage. Say just what you mean to do, on every occasion.
If a friend asks a favor, you should grant it, if it is reasonable; if not, tell him plainly why you cannot. You would wrong him and wrong yourself by equivocation of any kind.
Never do a wrong thing to make a friend or keep one. The man who requires you to do so is dearly purchased at a sacrifice.
Deal kindly but firmly with all your classmates. You will find it the policy which wears best. Above all, do not appear to others what you are not.
If you have any fault to find with any one, tell him, not others, of what you complain. There is no more dangerous experiment than that of undertaking to do one thing before a man's face and another behind his back.
We should say and do nothing to the injury of any one. It is not only a matter of principle, but also the path of peace and honor.

Why do some people move from one level of success to the next in live while others seem to be stuck in the same place they were five years ago? Successful people have tapped into a law that not many are either aware of or are willing to apply to their lives. It is the Law of Suggestion, and when used correctly and consistenty, it has the power to turn your life around on a dime.
Henry Ford said, 'If you think you can or if you think you can't, you are right!" Jesus, Himself said, "As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he".
Who you are today and the level of failure or success you have achieved is in direct proportion to who you think you are and what you think you can achieve. You may be stuck right now; stuck in the same old job you hate, stuck in the bitterness of anothers betrayal to you, stuck in a body that is 50 pounds overweight; I don't care how stuck you are and for how long you have been stuck, you can walk out of it in the amount of time it takes you to think your next thought. Yes, it's the truth! There is a giant of success within you just waiting to be aroused and awakened by the power of your own suggestion!
Someone once asked this question, "How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time". You can walk out of your failure in any and every area of your life beginning with your very next thought. You must take captive the stinkin' thinkin' that has been allowed to run unchallenged in your mind. Negativity, self-doubt, procrastination, the lie that tells you, "This is the hand life dealt you and there is really nothing you can do about it, the lie that there are successful people, failures and mediocre people and they are born that way"; Hogwash! You are equipped to be anyone and anything you choose to be! The only difference between the successful and the failure is this, successful people engage themselves in positive self-talk and positive affirmations (both consciencely and sub-consciencely) daily. They are willing to fight for what they want to be and achieve, to sacrifice the momentary pleasure to live the enduring life they envision for themselves.
Are you ready to walk out of the muck and mire of defeat and failure and into the life you have always dreamed of? Then do it! Do it right now! It all begins with your very next thought. Refuse to think like a failure, replace every negative lie with a positive affirmation and remember this..."It's not what you do, it's what you keep on doing!" It takes 21 days to form any habit in your life, so be ready to fight the good fight of faith against negativity and before you know it, you will have formed a habit that will begin to direct your sub-conscience thoughts step by step right into the life you've always wished for but didn't know you could live. It's sort of like Dorothy in the Wizzard of OZ, Glenda, told her, "You've always had the power to be where you wanted to be", Dorothy says, "Why didn't anyone tell me it was as simple as clicking my heels three times and SAYING THE RIGHT WORDS?" Because you wouldn't have believed it before now!
The power of the spoken word and the spoken thought may seem too simple to be the answer to your getting un-stuck in life, but sometimes people stumble over the answer only because it seems too simple. We want a magic pill or some kind of epiphany but I'm telling you, at the end of the yellow brick road, you will descover you had the power within you all along!

One day, an expert in time management was speaking to a group of students and, to drive home a point, used an illustration those students will never forget.
As he stood in front of the group of overachievers he said, "OK, time for a quiz." He pulled out a one-gallon, wide-mouth jar and set it on the table in front of him. He also produced about a dozen fist-sized rocks and carefully placed them, one at a time, into the jar. When the jar was filled to the top and no more rocks would fit inside, he asked, "Is this jar full?"
Everyone in the class yelled, "Yes." The time management expert replied, "Really?" He reached under the table and pulled out a bucket of gravel. He dumped some gravel in and shook the jar, causing pieces of gravel to work themselves down into the spaces between the big rocks. He then asked the group once more, "Is this jar full?"
By this time the class was on to him. "Probably not," one of them answered. "Good!" he replied. He reached under the table and brought out a bucket of sand. He started dumping the sand in the jar and it went into all of the spaces left between the rocks and the gravel. Once more he asked the question, "Is this jar full?"
"No!" the class shouted. Once again he said, "Good." Then he grabbed a pitcher of water and began to pour it in until the jar was filled to the brim. Then he looked at the class and asked, "What is the point of this illustration?" One eager student raised his hand and said, "The point is, no matter how full your schedule is, if you try really hard you can always fit some more things in it!"
"No," the speaker replied, "that's not the point. The truth this illustration teaches us is if you don't put the big rocks in first, you'll never get them in at all. What are the 'big rocks' in your life? Time with your loved ones, your education, your dreams, a worthy cause, teaching or mentoring others? Remember to put these big rocks in first or you'll never get them in at all."

How do you define yourself? As a mother, daughter, wife, friend, husband, son, teacher, student, lawyer, accountant, or any one of a myriad(无数) different titles? Or do you define yourself by others' perception of you? Do any of these come close to your own knowledge, your personal experience of whom you really are?
In your quiet moments, in times of inexplicable(无以名状的) joy, have you had the overwhelming and yet clear and lucid(清楚的) feeling of total invincibility(无敌) — a feeling that nothing can hold you down, that you can accomplish anything and everything if you put your mind to it? Well, that feeling is not a random one.
What is it that gets in the way of your exquisite power?
Consider for a moment an iron bar that has magnetic power inherently in it. It will attract or repel things based on it's own intrinsic magnetism. Over time, if this bar begins to rust, its power will begin to diminish. The oxidative damage from the environment that the magnet has not been able to resist, will render it ineffective, eventually. This in no way means the iron bar is not capable of its latent, original power. All it needs to do is shed its rust. Or, consider if you will, a light bulb that is lit, but covered with soot. As long as the soot remains, it will be unable to fulfill the very purpose it was meant to serve to radiate light.
According to ancient Vedic texts, this is in effect what happens to the human experience. The infinite power that is naturally present in each and every one of us by virtue of our own consciousness, can be rendered ineffective if not tended to properly. The stress of our lifestyle, the pollution of our environment, and the collective stress of our world keeps us from functioning at our full potential.
But there are remedies: incorporate modalities in your lifestyle that effectively combat stress and help keep you centered. Some of these options are:
Be aware of what you eat, and what you use — both on yourself, and in your environment. Choose natural, organic products.
Live a life of kindness, compassion, and charity — it keeps you connected to your center, your source, that infinite reservoir within you that is your powerhouse.
Don't judge people, or situations — approach each moment with the knowledge that it contains within it the potential of any number of possibilities.
To connect with your real nature that is unbounded and invincible, practice yoga and meditation.
Once you are in touch with your true nature, then nothing is beyond your means — you are truly empowered. And that is an accurate definition of you!

"We are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book whose pages are infinite..."
I do not know who wrote these words, but I have always liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want to make it.
We can take the mysterious, hazy future and carve out of it anything that we can imagine, just as a sculptor carves a statue from a shapeless stone.
We are all in the position of the farmer.
If we we plant a good seed, we reap a good harvest.
If our seed is poor and full of weeds, we reap a useless crop.
If we plant nothing at all, we harvest nothing at all.
I want the future to be better than the past.
I don't want it contaminated by the mistakes and errors with which history is filled.
We should all be concerned about the future because that is where we will spend the remainder of our lives.
The past is gone and static.
Nothing we can do will change it.
The future is before us and dynamic.
Everything we do will affect it.
Each day brings with it new frontiers,in our homes and in our businesses, if we will only recognize them.
We are just at the beginning of the progress in every field of human endeavor.
