中国人认为饮食与个人命运几乎是息息相关的,用饭时犯了禁忌,便会惹来衰运。例如吃鱼,当吃完了一面鱼身,不要用筷子把整条鱼翻转至另一面,他们认为若翻鱼时弄破鱼身,便意味著渔船会翻沉,这是由于香港在开埠初期是一个渔港,渔民很关注船只的安全航行;
此外,中国人从不会端上七碟菜肴用饭,因为葬礼后的“解慰酒“须有七碟菜肴;不可用筷子垂直插入碗饭的中央,因这样有点像在拜祭祖先;用饭后不可说“我吃完饭了”,这意谓自己已死去,不会再有机会吃饭,而应该说“我吃饱了”;

1. Asking to speak with someone

When you eat noodles in Japan, it's perfectly okay – even expected – to slurp them.
When drinking, don't fill your own drink; fill the glass of the person next to you and wait for them to reciprocate. Filling your own glass amounts to admitting to everyone at the table that you're an alcoholic.
In Nepal, do wait to be served and be sure to ask for seconds when eating at someone's house. In general, when eating in a group, no one gets up until everyone has finished their food. If you have to leave early, make your apologies by saying bistaii khaanus, or "please eat slowly".
In Armenia, if you empty a bottle into someone's glass, it obliges them to buy the next bottle – it's polite to put the last drops into your own glass.
In Saudi Arabia where men eat separated from women, you have to eat with right hand only and if you are a foreign guest among Saudis, you will be offered the delicacies such as the eye balls of a camel or penis of a ram! If you go to the desert and meet some bedouin, you will be offered a bowl of milk which they draw from the camel as you wait. It is hot and frothy and tastes very earthy and you are expected to drink it all.
In Australia, shout drinks to a group on arrival at the pub. "Shouting" is a revered custom where people rotate paying for a round of drinks. Don't leave before it's your turn to buy!
In Russia, put your wrists on the edge of the table while eating, and keep your fork in your left hand and knife in your right.

In Sweden, it's considered vulgar to clink your glasses aside from formal "skals" (cheers).
In France, never, ever discuss money over dinner. And splitting the bill is considered the height of unsophistication.
In restaurants in Portugal, don't ask for salt and pepper if it is not already on the table. Asking for any kind of seasoning or condiment is to cast aspersions on the cook. And cooks are highly respected people in Portugal.
In general, Americans try to eat neatly, without making a lot of noise. If something on the table is out of your reach, politely ask someone to pass it to you. Do not bend over to eat. Sit up as straight as you can without being uncomfortable. Do not talk with your mouth full. Table napkins are placed on your lap, folded in half if they are very large. Use your fork, knife and spoon to eat your food. There are some exceptions, such as lobster and corn on the cob, cookies, shrimps, and fried chicken. Better watch what other people do. If you do eat with your hands, don't lick your fingers to clean them. Use the napkin carefully.
Whenever you catch the eye of someone who's eating in Mexico, stranger or not, say "provecho" (enjoy). Don't avoid this custom. It's good manners and feels nice.
Avoid arriving on time for a dinner party in a private home. You are expected to be at least a little late in Brazil. Arriving 30 minutes after your invitation time will usually suffice. Say "bon apetite" to the rest of the diners at your table before beginning to eat. Use your knife and fork to eat everything. Brazilian etiquette rarely permits touching food with your hands. Even fruit and pizza are eaten with a fork and knife. Keep your elbows off the table, particularly in formal settings.
Eating from individual plates strikes most in Ethiopia as hilarious, bizarre and wasteful. Food is always shared from a single plate without the use of cutlery. Greed is considered uncivilized so try not to guzzle. The meat dishes are usually the last things eaten, so don't home in on them straight away.

Office protocol can make it different for one employee to ask anther for help. While no one likes the shirker who never seems to be able to quite get his own projectsfinished and turns helplessly to peers for assistance, most will willingly volunteer to lend a hand to someone who has helped him or her.
If you know a coworker is working through lunch to collate a large client packet, your volunteering to stay and help will be gratefully received and most often returned when it's you who is stuck. I say voluntarily because your offer is not to add up paid overtime hours. It is to help a peer in need.
If your offer is accepted, you do not, however, store it away in your mental favor bank or ever remind everyone what a good person you were for helping------you simply hope the favor will be returned when it's you who is overloaded.

1
When helping a woman pull her chair to the table, hold it and guide it. Don't shove it against the back of her legs.
2
If you're seated at a table with eight or fewer guests, wait for everyone to be served and for the hostess to begin eating before you dig in. At a long banquet table, it's OK to start when several people are seated and served.
3
All things not having to do with food should remain off the table: keys, clutch bags, cigarette packs, sunglasses, BlackBerrys.
4
Don't snap your napkin open or unfurl it showily like it's an Olympic flag.
5
If you prefer not to have wine while dining out, don't turn your glass upside down, and don't make a big deal of saying you don't drink. Simply place your fingertips on the rim of the glass and say "Not today, thanks."
6
If you're eating and want to take a sip, dab your mouth with your napkin to avoid staining the rim of the glass.
7
Grabbing a bowl of salad or a saltshaker as it's being passed to someone who asked for it is the equivalent of cutting in line: greedy and rude.
8
On the subject of passing: Dishes go counterclockwise, but if someone to your left asks for something, you can hand it directly to him.
9
When you excuse yourself to go to the restroom, just say "Please excuse me."
10
When out with friends or family - even at a fancy restaurant - it's OK to ask for your leftovers to be wrapped. But don't do it at a business lunch or dinner.

I believe the Chinese food is famous around the world.
And if you are in China and you are asked by your Chinese friend to a dinner, you may want to know how to pick up your seat at the table and what is the proper way to sit at the table.
Well, normally this seat is the seat for the host or the hostess.
The seat is facing the door of this room.
One may also distinguish the seats at the table from the style in which the napkins are folded.
Regardless of how the napkins are arranged.,the tallest arrangement will always correspond to the master seat.
At the small table, a table for four of five, the seat right across of the host seat, the seat over there, the back of which is facing the door is the seat for the main guest.
But usually of course, when it’s a bigger table, a table for ten or twelve, and it is not easy for host or hostess talking with the main guest, right across the table like right across the ocean and they can just sit side by side which can make it easier for them to talk.
And on the table I suppose you have noticed that there is something like this, it’s a smaller table on the big table.
And I suppose you call it Lazy Susan.
Lazy Suzan
Yeah, this can make things easier for us.
Because in the Chinese way of having food,we don’t order our own food.
We order for everybody and everybody shares the food on the table.
And usually we can have each of the people at the table to order one of the dishes.
So what if something I want is on the other side of the table, for instance if I want the chicken, so I can turn the Lazy Susan and turn the chicken to my side.
I can just pick it up without standing up and reaching out which is not proper or polite in Chinese table manner.
And of course when someone else picks the dishes you are not gonna turn the table at that time, turn lazy Susan at that time.
And do you know why I just sit hear rather than there?
Because the one sitting there is gonna pay the bill.
Most Chinese people have the tradition of making toasts at banquets.
The order on the toast may be based on age from the eldest to the youngest by social position from high to low, or by guest status from principal to secondary.
Only if the individual proposes the toast in a correct and reasonable manner, would the toast be well received and appreciated.
One may propose a toast at any time throughout the meal, and making several toasts to one person is acceptable as well.
If the guests’ glasses are less than half full, the host will help refill glasses for them.
The order in which this takes place is similar to that of proposing toasts, placing those of higher social status first.
When people make a toast to a person superior, they usually make sure that rim of their glass clinks at position lower than rim of the other person’s glass, which expresses respect and modesty.
To show good hospitality, the host usually urge the guest to eat more.
For children, relatives or close friends, they will even serve the dishes themselves.
The guests are supposed to accept the serving and kindly show their appreciation.
Even if they do not like the particular dish, they do not refuse the serving as simply accept it and leave it at side of their plate.
Eating in the restaurant in China, tips are not necessary.
Bottom up! 【Drink up! / Cheers!】干杯
Pay the bill.买单

B:Certainly, Mr. Deng. Hilton Hotel, Room 579?
A:That’s right. Thank you.
1.This is…… 在电话中说明“我是谁”时,是用“This is……”,而不是“I am”。
2.I‘d like to……等于“I would like to……”——“我想……”。“would like”为“want”的客气用法。
3.speak with ……

8. certainly adv.

Mr. Jones is out* at the moment*. Would you like to leave a message?
