A long time ago, there was a Bo Luo Nai City in the State of Jia Shi. Outside the city was a large forest, where 500 macaques lived.
One night the 500 macaques wandered around and came to a ni ju lu (bodhi) tree. Under the tree was a deep ancient well. The water in the well was very clean and reflected the full moon in the sky.
The leading macaque bent1 over the well and watched carefully for a while. Then it jumped onto the edge of the well and said to the others: "Alas2! Today the moon has died and fallen into this well. Let us scoop3 it up together; otherwise the nights will be dark forever."
All the macaques tweaked their ears and scratched their cheeks, saying:"The well is so deep. How can we scoop up the moon?"
The leading macaque had a sudden brainwave and said: "I have it! I will climb up the tree and grasp a branch, then another one grasps my tail. In this way, one following another in succession4, can't we hang down into the well?"
When the other macaques heard this, they jumped with joy. So they linked their heads and tails together, extending5 longer and longer until they almost touched the surface of the well water. At this moment, the branch broke with a big crack and all 500 macaques fell into the ancient well.

The deer feared the leopard cat, the leopard cat feared the tiger, and the tiger the brown bear.
The brown bear resembled the fox but was bigger in size. It had long fur on its head, and could stand up like man. It had great strength and would devour man.
In the south of the State of Chu, there was a hunter good at ventriloquy. With a bamboo pipe he could imitate the cries of various kinds of wild animals.
Once, carrying his bow, arrows and firearms, he quietly went hunting in the mountain.
Up on the mountain, he first imitated the cries of the deer to lure the horde of deer to come over, so that he could shoot at them with the firearms. The leopard cat heard the cries of the deer and came running to devour the deer. The hunter was afraid of the leopard cat, so he hurriedly imitated the roar of the tiger to scare away the leopard cat. Hardly had the leopard cat been scared away when the tiger heard the roar and came. At this moment, the hunter was even more frightened, so he imitated the cries of the brown bear. As a result, the tiger was scared away like the leopard cat.
Then, when the brown bear heard the cries, it came to look for its companions. Seeing that it was a man, the brown bear at once struck him with its front paws, and tore him up with its teeth. In a short while, the hunter was torn to pieces and devoured by the brown bear.

A man had an ass and lovely lap-dog.
The ass was left in a stable, and had plenty of oats and day to eat, just as any other ass would. The lap-dog knew many tricks, and was a great favourite with his master.
The master seldom went out to dine or to super without bringing him something nice to eat when he jumped about him in a pleasant manner. The ass, on the contrary, had much work to do, in grinding the corn-mill and in carrying wood from the forest or burdens from the farm,. He often co plained about his own hard fate, and contrasted it with the luxury and idleness of the lap-dog. At last one day he broke the chain and ran into his master's house, kicking up his heels without measuring and jumping as well as he could, he next tried to jump about his master as he had seen the lap-dog do, but he broke the table, and smashed all the dishes on it to pieces. He then tried to lick his master, and jumped upon his back. The servants hearing the strange noise, and imagining the danger of his master, quickly helped him out of the situation and drove out the ass to his stable, with kicks and beatings. The ass, as he returned to his stall beaten nearly to death, thus cried and said sadly, "I have brought it all on myself! Why could I not have been contented to labour with my companions, and not wish to be idle all the day like that useless little alp-dog".

I am very frightened of being slaughtered, so I am crying. You are a toad and don't have a tail. What are you weeping for?"

There was once a bird called the roc, whose back was as big as Mount Tai and whose wings were like clouds that overspread the heaven.
When it wheeled up into the air a whirlwind arose, and in each flight it covered ninety thousand li, flying above the misty vapours under the sky, to the Southern Ocean.
Where can it be going? Wondered a bird with a laugh, "I once flew into the sky, then come down to enjoy myself among the bushes. That's good enough for me. Where else does it want to go?"
Here we see the difference in outlook between great and small.

A bear, who had made his living by dancing for a long time, at length escaped from his master, and returned to his former companions in the woods.
His brothers welcomed him with most friendly growls. The traveler now told what he had seen foreign countries, told a long history of his adventures, and, to exhibit his wonderful feats, began, in an erectposition, to dance the Polonaise. His brothers, who were watching the performance, were astonished at his grace, and tried to imitate his ballet steps. It was in vain, hardly were they raised on two legs when they fell again upon all fours. Seeing their awkwardness, the bear went on exhibiting some higher displays of his art, which, at length, aroused the envy of the others, and so they drove him from their society.

During the Southern and Northern Dynasties (420-589), there lived a beautiful, intelligent princess name Lechang in the State Chen. She and her husband Xu Deyan loved each other dearly. But before long their country was in danger of being invaded by the troops of the Sui Dynasty. Princess Lechang and Xu Deyan had a premonition that their county would be occupied by the invaders and they would have to leave the palace and go into exile. During the chaos they might lose touch with each other. They broke a bronze mirror, a symbol of the unity of husband and wife into two parts and each of them kept a half. They aGREed that each would take their half of the mirror to the fair during the Lantern Festival, which is on the 15th day of the first Lunar month, in the hope that would meet again. When they were united the two halves would join together. Soon their premonition came true. During the chaos of war, the princess lost touch with her husband was taken to a powerful minister Yang Su's house and was made his mistress.
At the Lantern Festival the next year, Xu Deyan took his half of the mirror to the fair. He hoped that he could meet his wife. It so happened that a servant was selling the other half of the bronze mirror. Xu Deyan recognized it immediately. He asked the servant about his wife. As he heard about her bitter experience, tears rolled down his cheeks. Xu Deyan wrote a poem on the half of the mirror kept by his wife: "You left me with your broken mirror Now the mirror is back but not you I can no longer see your reflection in the mirror Only the bright moon but not you" .
the servant brought back the inscribed half of the mirror to princess Lechang. For days, she could not help sobbing because she knew her husband was still alive and that he missed her but they could not meet forever.
the minister, Yang Su, found this out. He was also moved by their true love and realized it was impossible to get Lechang's love. So he sent for Xu Deyan and allowed the husband and wife to reunite.
From that story comes the idiom "A broken mirror joined together".
It is used to suggest the happy reunion of a separated couple.

A long time ago, in Henan there was a young man named Le whose family was very poor.
One day, Le Yangzi picked up a piece of gold on the road. He happily took it home and gave it to his wife. His wife said in all seriousness: "I heard that men with aspiration do not drink from the Dao (meaning steal in Chinese) Spring, and honest men do not take handout food. Furthermore, picked-up money and things will stain one's moral character."
Hearing this, Yangzi was very ashamed of himself. So he threw the piece of gold away in the open field.
This incident touched Le Yangzi deeply. He made up his mind to leave home and go to a faraway place to study under a master.
One year later, Le Yangzi returned home. His wife inquired why he returned so soon. Le Yangzi smiled and said: "There is no other reason except that I, being all alone away from home, miss you so much that I come back."
His wife turned pale at his words. She took up a knife, ran to the silk loom, put the knife on the silk fabric woven from natural silk, and said to Le Yangzi in an agitated tone:
"I reeled silk strand by strand from cocoons and, with the shuttle moving to and fro, weaved it inch by inch into this bolt of silk fabric. Now if I should cut the fabric with the knife, all the previous efforts and time I've devoted would be wasted. While studying, you should always remind yourself that there is yet much more to learn. Only in this way can you cultivate a noble moral character. If you give up halfway, it will be just like cutting up this silk fabric at one stroke."
Deeply moved by his wife's words, Le Yangzi bid farewell to her at once, went to the faraway place, and made determined efforts to study hard. He had been away from home for a good seven years, and finally succeeded in his studies.

One year in the Eastern Han Dynasty, there was a serious famine in Henan.
One night, a thief sneaked into Chen Shi's house and hid himself on the beam. When Chen Shi was aware of this, he got out of bed without haste, called his children and grandchildren to his room and said in a stern voice: "One must always restrain and encourage oneself no matter under what circumstances. Bad men were not born bad. It is only become they don't restrain themselves that they develop bad habits and turn bad gradually. That gentleman on the beam is just a case in point."
Much ashamed upon hearing this, the thief hiding on the beam promptly jumped down to the ground, kowtowed and begged for forgiveness.
Chen Shi enlightened him by saying: "Judging from your appearance, you don't look like a bad man. Perhaps you are driven by poverty to steal. But you should carefully examine yourself and turn over a new leaf."
Then he immediately asked someone to bring two bolts of white silk to give the thief as a present. The thief kowtowed and thanked him repeatedly.
Since then, very few thefts occurred in this locality.

The figure of Chinese mugwort, unwilling to be outdone, looked down and retorted: "It is summer now. You have only half a year to go, and can't live long. Why squabble over who is higher or who is lower?"
The peachwood charm was beside itself with rage, and answered back sarcastically. Both sides refused to give in, and squabbled endlessly with a stream of abuse against each other.
At this moment, the deity of the door came to mediate: "It is only because we have no ability that we have to attach ourselves to the door of others. What's the point of quarrelling with each other?"

Thinking that the doctor had prescribed the wrong medicine, he called and reproved him, asking what was the matter.
The doctor didn't believe this. He poured out the dregs of the decoction from the pot and examined them. To his surprise, they were not fining, but just dried sweet potatoes, dyed and processed.
The doctor sighed and said: "The medicine seller is a swindler. The medicine taker does not know head or tail of it. Illness cannot be cured by the doctor alone."
