when i was growing up, i was embarrassed to be seen with my father. he was severely crippled and very short, and when we would walk together, his hand on my arm for balance, people would stare. i would inwardly squirm at the unwanted attention. if he ever noticed or was bothered, he never let on.
it was difficult to coordinate our steps -- his halting, mine impatient -- and because of that, we didn't say much as we went along. but as we started out, he always said, "you set the pace. i will try to adjust to you. "
our usual walk was to or from the subway, which was how he got to work. he went to work sick, and despite nasty weather. he almost never missed a day, and would make it to the office even if others could not. a matter of pride.
when snow or ice was on the ground, it was impossible for him to walk, even with help. at such times my sisters or i would pull him through the streets of brooklyn, ny, on a child's sleigh to the subway entrance. once there, he would cling to the handrail until he reached the lower steps that the warmer tunnel air kept ice-free. in manhattan the subway station was the basement of his office building, and he would not have to go outside again until we met him in brooklyn' on his way home.
when i think of it now, i marvel at how much courage it must have taken for a grown man to subject himself to such indignity and stress. and at how he did it -- without bitterness or complaint .
he never talked about himself as an object of pity, nor did he show any envy of the more fortunate or able. what he looked for in others was a "good heart", and if he found one, the owner was good enough for him.
now that i am older, i believe that is a proper standard by which to judge people, even though i still don' t know precisely what a "good heart" is. but i know the times i don't have one myself.
unable to engage in many activities, my father still tried to participate in some way. when a local sandlot baseball team found itself |without a manager, he kept it going. he was a knowledgeable baseball fan and often took me to ebbets field to see the brooklyn dodgers play. he liked to go to dances and parties, where he could have a good time just sitting and watching.
on one memorable occasion a fight broke out at a beach party, with everyone punching and shoving. he wasn't content to sit and watch, but he couldn't stand unaided on the soft sand. in frustration he began to shout, "i' ll fight anyone who will tit down with me!"
nobody did. but the next day people kidded him by saying it was the first time any fighter was urged to take a dive even before the bout began.

As a fond mother, when the day is o'er,
Leads by the hand her little child to bed,
牵着孩儿的手儿,领他上床歇息;
Half willing, half reluctant to be led,
And leave his broken playthings on the floor,
Still gazing at them through the open door,
Nor wholly reassured and comforted
By promises of others in their stead,
Which, though more splendid, may not please him more;
So nature deals with us, and takes away
Our playthings one by one, and by the hand
Leads us to rest so gently, that we go
Scarce knowing if we wish to go or stay,
Being too full of sleep to understand
How far the unknown transcends the what we know.

Proud Maisie is in the wood,
Walking so early;
Sweet Robin sits on the bush,
Singing so rarely.
"tell me, thou bonny bird,
when shall I marry me?"
"when six braw gentlemen
kirkward shall carry ye."
"who makes the bridal bed,
birdie, say truly?"
"The gray-headed sexton
That delves the grave duly."
"The glowworm o'er grave and stone
Shall light thee steady;
The owl from the steeple sing,
Welcome, proud lady."
踩着晨曦;

Whilst I alone did call upon thy aid,
My verse alone had all thy gentle grace,
只有我的诗占有你一切妩媚;
But now my gracious numbers are decay'd
And my sick Muse doth give another place.
I grant, sweet love, thy lovely argument
Deserves the travail of a worthier pen,
值得更高明的笔的精写细描;
Yet what of thee thy poet doth invent
He robs thee of and pays it thee again.
He lends thee virtue and he stole that word
From thy behavior; beauty doth he give
And found it in thy cheek; he can afford
No praise to thee but what in thee doth live.
Then thank him not for that which he doth say,
Since what he owes thee thou thyself dost pay.

That thou art blamed shall not be thy defect,
For slander's mark was ever yet the fair;
因为美丽永远是诽谤的对象;
The ornament of beauty is suspect,
A crow that flies in heaven's sweetest air.
So thou be good, slander doth but approve
Thy worth the greater, being woo'd of time;
你的美德,既然时光对你钟情;
For canker vice the sweetest buds doth love,
And thou present'st a pure unstained prime.
Thou hast pass'd by the ambush of young days,
Either not assail'd or victor being charged;
或未遭遇袭击,或已克服敌手;
Yet this thy praise cannot be so thy praise,
To tie up envy evermore enlarged:
If some suspect of ill mask'd not thy show,
Then thou alone kingdoms of hearts shouldst owe.

Thus is his cheek the map of days outworn,
When beauty lived and died as flowers do now,
Before the bastard signs of fair were born,
Or durst inhabit on a living brow;
Before the golden tresses of the dead,
The right of sepulchres, were shorn away,
To live a second life on second head;
Ere beauty's dead fleece made another gay:
In him those holy antique hours are seen,
Without all ornament, itself and true,
Making no summer of another's green,
Robbing no old to dress his beauty new;
不掠取旧脂粉妆饰他的鲜花;
And him as for a map doth Nature store,
To show false Art what beauty was of yore.

Tired with all these, for restful death I cry,
As, to behold desert a beggar born,
And needy nothing trimm'd in jollity,
And purest faith unhappily forsworn,
And guilded honour shamefully misplaced,
And maiden virtue rudely strumpeted,
And right perfection wrongfully disgraced,
And strength by limping sway disabled,
And art made tongue-tied by authority,
And folly doctor-like controlling skill,
And simple truth miscall'd simplicity,
And captive good attending captain ill:
Tired with all these, from these would I be gone,
Save that, to die, I leave my love alone.

When forty winters shall besiege thy brow,
And dig deep trenches in thy beauty's field,
Thy youth's proud livery so gazed on now,
Will be a tottered weed of small worth held:
Then being asked where all thy beauty lies,
Where all the treasure of thy lusty days,
To say within thine own deep-sunken eyes,
Were an all-eating shame and thriftless praise.
How much more praise deserved thy beauty's use,
If thou couldst answer, 'This fair child of mine
Shall sum my count, and make my old excuse,'
Proving his beauty by succession thine.
This were to be new made when thou art old,
And see thy blood warm when thou feel'st it cold.

Those hours that with gentle work did frame
The lovely gaze where every eye doth dwell
Will play the tyrants to the very same
And that unfair which fairly doth excel;
使美的不再美,只让它一度杰出;
For never-resting Time leads summer on
To hideous winter and confounds him there,
可怕的冬天,就随手把他倾覆;
Sap checked with frost and lusty leaves quite gone,
Beauty o'ersnowed and bareness everywhere.
Then, were not summer's distillation left
A liquid prisoner pent in walls of glass,
Beauty's effect with beauty were bereft,
Nor it nor no remembrance what it was.
But flowers distilled though they with winter meet,
Leese but their show, their substance still lives sweet.

For shame, deny that thou bear'st love to any
Who for thyself art so unprovident.
Grant if thou wilt, thou art beloved of many,
But that thou none lov'st is most evident;
说你不爱任何人却地道天公;
For thou art so possessed with murd'rous hate,
That 'gainst thyself thou stick'st not to conspire,
Seeking that beauteous roof to ruinate,
Which to repair should be thy chief desire.
O, change thy thought, that I may change my mind.
Shall hate be fairer lodged than gentle love?
Be as thy presence is, gracious and kind,
Or to thyself at least kind-hearted prove.
至少也得对自己多点儿慈悲;
Make thee another self for love of me,
That beauty still may live in thine or thee.
Is it for fear to wet a widow's eye
That thou consum'st thyself in single life?
Ah, if thou issueless shalt hap to die,
The world will wail thee like a makeless wife;
The world will be thy widow and still weep,
That thou no form of thee hast left behind,
When every private widow well may keep,
By children's eyes, her husband's shape in mind.
Look what an unthrift in the world doth spend,
Shifts but his place, for still the world enjoys it;
只换了位置,仍能为世人享用;
But beauty's waste hath in the world an end,
And kept unused, the user so destroys it:
No love toward others in that bosom sits
That on himself such murd'rous shame commits.

Lo, in the orient when the gracious light
Lifts up his burning head, each under eye
Doth homage to his new-appearing sight,
Serving with looks his sacred majesty;
注视着他,向他的圣驾致敬;
And having climbed the steep-up heavenly hill,
Resembling strong youth in his middle age,
Yet mortal looks adore his beauty still,
Attending on his golden pilgrimage;
侍奉着他在他那金色的旅途中;
But when from highmost pitch, with weary car,
Like feeble age he reeleth from the day,
The eyes, 'fore duteous, now converted are
From his low tract and look another way:
So thou, thyself outgoing in thy noon,
Unlooked on diest unless thou get a son.

Look in thy glass and tell the face thou viewest
Now is the time that face should form another,
是时候了,这脸儿该找个替身;
Whose fresh repair if now thou not renewest,
Thou dost beguile the world, unbless some mother.
For where is she so fair whose uneared womb
Disdains the tillage of thy husbandry?
Or who is he so fond will be the tomb
Of his self-love to stop posterity?
Thou art thy mother's glass, and she in thee
Calls back the lovely April of her prime;
So thou through windows of thine age shalt see,
Despite of wrinkles, this thy golden time.
But if thou live rememb'red not to be,
Die single and thine image dies with thee.

When I consider everything that grows
Holds in perfection but a little moment,
That this huge stage presenteth naught but shows
Whereon the stars in secret influence comment;
没有不受到星象的默化潜移;
When I perceive that men as plants increase,
Cheered and checked even by the selfsame sky,
一样被头上的天空所鼓舞,所叱责;
Vaunt in their youthful sap, at height decrease,
And wear their brave state out of memory;
Then the conceit of this inconstant stay
Sets you most rich in youth before my sight,
Where wasteful Time debateth with Decay,
To change your day of youth to sullied night;
要变你青春的白天为晦暗的夜晚;
And, all in war with Time for love of you,
As he takes from you, I engraft you new.

Sitting on a grassy grave, beneath one of the windows of the church, was a little girl.
With her head bent back she was gazing up at the sky and singing,
while one of her little hands was pointing to a tiny cloud
that hovered like a golden feather above her head.
The sun, which had suddenly become very bright, shining on her glossy hair,
gave it a metallic luster, and it was difficult to say what was the color, dark bronze or black.
So completely absorbed was she in watching the cloud to which her strange song or incantation seemed addressed,
that she did not observe me when I rose and went towards her.
Over her head, high up in the blue,
a lark that was soaring towards the same gauzy cloud was singing, as if in rivalry.
As I slowly approached the child,
I could see by her forehead, which in the sunshine seemed like a globe of pearl,
and especially by her complexion, that she uncommonly lovely.
Her eyes, which at one moment seemed blue-gray, at another violet,
were shaded by long black lashes, curving backward in a most peculiar way,
and these matched in hue her eyebrows,
and the tresses that were tossed about her tender throat were quivering in the sunlight.
All this I did not take in at once;
for at first I could see nothing but those quivering, glittering, changeful eyes turned up into my face.
Gradually the other features, especially the sensitive full-lipped mouth,
grew upon me as I stood silently gazing.
Here seemed to me a more perfect beauty than had ever come to me in my loveliest dreams of beauty.
Yet it was not her beauty so much as the look she gave me that fascinated me, melted me.

One day thirty years ago Marseilles lay in the burning sun.
A blazing sun upon a fierce August day was no greater rarity in southern France
than at any other time before or since.
Everything in Marseilles and about Marseilles had stared at the fervid sun,
and had been stared at in return, until a staring habit had become universal there.
Strangers were stared out of countenance by staring white houses,
staring white streets, staring tracts of arid road, staring hills from which verdure was burnt away.
The only things to be seen not fixedly staring and glaring
were the vines drooping under their loads of grapes.
These did occasionally wink a little, as the hot air barely moved their faint leaves.
The universal stare made the eyes ache.
Towards the distant blue of the Italian coast, indeed,
it was a little relieved by light clouds of mist
slowly rising from the evaporation of the sea,
but it softened nowhere else.
Far away the dusty vines overhanging wayside cottages,
and the monotonous wayside avenues of parched trees without shade,
dropped beneath the stare of earth and sky.
So did the horses with drowsy bells, in long files of carts,
creeping slowly towards the interior;
so did their recumbent drivers, when they were awake, which rarely happened;
so did the exhausted laborers in the fields.
Everything that lived or grew was oppressed by the glare;
except the lizard, passing swiftly over rough stone walls,
and cicada, chirping its dry hot chirp, like a rattle.
The very dust was scorched brown,
and something quivered in the atmosphere as if the air itself were panting.
Blinds, shutters, curtains, awnings, were all closed and drawn to deep out the stare.
Grant it but a chink or a keyhole,
and it shot in like a white-hot arrow.

O, how much more doth beauty beauteous seem
By that sweet ornament which truth doth give!
The rose looks fair, but fairer we it deem
For that sweet odour which doth in it live.
The canker-blooms have full as deep a dye
As the perfumed tincture of the roses,
Hang on such thorns and play as wantonly
When summer's breath their masked buds discloses:
But, for their virtue only is their show,
They live unwoo'd and unrespected fade,
开时无人眷恋,萎谢也无人理;
Die to themselves. Sweet roses do not so;
寂寞地死去。香的玫瑰却两样;
Of their sweet deaths are sweetest odours made:
And so of you, beauteous and lovely youth,
When that shall fade, my verse distills your truth.
