Many of these are things that we’ll be lucky to attain at any point in our lives. They’re not all universally applicable, this I realize. But I also realize that for many people, they are 25 little things that are important for dealing with the ins and outs of everyday adult life. These are ways to take care of ourselves, our lives, and the people in them, and not only to know ourselves, but to act on that knowledge as well.
1. A room of your own. I would say apartment or other kind of space, but sometimes that’s not financially feasible, and that’s okay. Regardless, at the minimum, everybody needs their own room. Your own space to be weird and cry and be alone or be alone with someone.
2. A worldview that isn’t a carbon copy of what your parents taught you nor derived from the experiences you’ve only read about in a textbook.
3. A person to call when things gets rough and a plan of action for the days where you need to be refueled in the human ways that aren’t easily bought or attained.
4. A savings account with at least a month or so of living expenses. This might sound unattainable if finances aren’t looking great right now but it’s more than crucial to make it work somehow. The importance of this usually isn’t recognized until it’s the reason you’re eating or not out on the street one day after you lose your job.
5. Clothing that will serve you in appropriate circumstances– funerals, weddings, work. A winter jacket, a rain coat. Not just things that are flimsy and unpractical, though they have their place and time as well. Because the last thing you want to do on the day of the wake of someone you deeply cared about is worry about what you are going to wear.
6. A relationship that functions outside of anything digital. To not deny ourselves the need for person-to-person connectivity.
7. A favorite book, artist and YouTube channel.
8. To know how to order a drink at the bar.
9. A relationship behind you that you can laugh about, and which makes you grateful for how far you’ve come.
10. An email address, bank account and journal that nobody else has access to.
11. A plunger, screwdriver, duct tape, jumper cables and the number of your local whoever is a professional at doing anything one would use those things for.
12. The ability to ask somebody on a date, take them somewhere nice, treat them right, not stress too much over what you wear to said occasion and be able to hold an interesting conversation with them.
13. Your own doctor, with whom you feel comfortable discussing your medical needs and issues, and the ability to receive the medication/birth control/whatever you want or need without anybody else having to know about it.
14. Go-to clothing staples that are shining little emblems of who you really are, of which were chosen and bought not because they were a trend but because they fit in more ways than just size.
15. A list of things you’d like to do in your life, none of which involves attaining masses of wealth or other means of success that are fleeting and shallow.
16. A basic opinion/belief regarding religion or spirituality, even if it’s that you’re researching options or that you don’t believe in anything at all. Having a stance, regardless of what it is, is what’s important.
17. Measuring cups, a pot deep enough to boil water in, a spatula, a frying pan and other basic cooking materials that virtually every meal that isn’t Easy Mac or cereal requires.
18. A signature recipe, plates for more than just two people to eat with, a bottle opener and the knowledge of where they sell the best wine in the area.
19. A simple luxury that you fund yourself, and the realization and acknowledgement that said thing is indeed a luxury.
20. The ability to use personal/vacation days without feeling guilty, and the knowledge of how they’d most effectively be used for one’s mental, physical or emotional benefit.
21. A way to have fun again.
22. To get rid of scales and stop measuring lives by numbers: salaries, houses owned, things accomplished, degrees hanging on the wall, etc. Because usually, nothing really worth having can be measured numerically.
23. To have eaten a meal, seen a movie, taken a walk and fallen asleep by yourself– and to have been content, if not happy, with doing so.
24. The ability to put things in perspective, to let go when it’s appropriate, fight harder when it’s necessary, listen to people rather than just hear them, and consider opinions that aren’t congruent with your own.
25. To have given yourself to someone, and not expected anything in return.

There’s nothing wrong with being frugal, but the smart man buys once, the fool buys twice. Meaning, if you buy cheap, that product will fail on you and you’ll just have to buy it again. The smart guy buys quality products once and they last forever. In short, there are things in this life that you don’t want to cheap out on. In the long run, paying what seems like a bargain price for some of the following items will only end up costing you more.
1. Tattoos
If you’re gonna get something permanently etched on your person… if you’re going to bleed for your commitment to say, the visualization of your favorite Foreigner album cover, then don’t you think you should pay for a quality artist? Until laser tattoo removal is perfected, that ink is forever. Put in the time for exhaustive research on best artists in your area and then pay them the money they deserve.
Long-term cost if you go with the “bargain” option:
Permanent shame, and uncomfortable looks from your parents around the dinner table during major holidays.
2.床垫
2. Mattresses
As they say, never skimp on what separates you from the ground—that includes tires, shoes, and mattresses—especially mattresses. A great mattress can and probably will cost you well into the thousands, but they’ll last longer and you’ll know where that money went when you wake up after an unfettered night’s sleep.
Long-term cost if you go with the “bargain” option:
Countless nights of restless sleep, grouchiness (due to restless sleep), and back pain like you couldn’t believe. Poor sleeping habits are actually incredibly bad for your health.
3. Toilet Paper
Have you ever had to make an emergency pit stop at a gas station to use the bathroom? How about a bathroom at a fast food restaurant? School restroom? What do these places have in common? Coarse, one-ply toilet paper with the grit of an ultra-fine sandpaper. Life’s too short–spend the extra 25 cents per roll on the three-ply cushy stuff.
Long-term cost if you go with the “bargain” option:
4. Cuts of Meat
Having people over for dinner? Get thee to a butcher. Save the cube steak for Monday night and serve your guests a cut that’s good enough to hide any culinary errors you might make. Ask the butcher a bunch of questions—he’ll suggest the perfect cut to match your occasion and grilling ability.
Long-term cost if you go with the “bargain” option:
Future dinner party guests, and a lot of flavor.
5. Condoms
It’s crass and people don’t like talking about it, but it’s life. The regular brands of condoms supplied at dollar store (in California) go by the names of Trustex and Fantasies. Do you really want to put your trust in a product that has the word “trust” in the brand name?
Mommy and Daddy’s little surprise bundle of fun.
6. Chef-grade Knives
See above. Have you bought a choice cut of meat? It deserves a good knife—they can actually enhance your steak. Here’s the thing though: there are lots of chefs’ knives out there and they all have different functions. Ask as legit chef for recommendations that align with your needs, or just our article on what knives chefs prefer.
Long-term cost if you go with the “bargain” option:
Your steak or, worse, your finger.
7. A Proper Haircut
Yes, it grows back, but you’re an adult. I’m not advocating a $200 shearing by the guy who cut Clinton’s hair on Air Force One, but finding a worthwhile hairstylist who can give you a cut tocompliment the shape of your face (as well as something that’s easy to style at a moment’s notice) makes all the difference in the world.
Long-term cost if you go with the “bargain” option:
Bad photos that live on in social-media infamy, potential gain of unflattering nickname.
8.衣服
8. Clothes
Quality lasts, the cheap stuff will last a season. That said, there’s nothing wrong with the cheap stuff when it serves the situation. If you’ve taken a walk through H&M or Old Navy, you’ll probably find a few quirky seasonal items meant for vacations or weekends. Buy them; they’re never going to be family heirlooms—they’re inexpensive and you’ll get a season out of them. Quality clothes will cost more though–a lot more, but you’ll have them forever.
Long-term cost if you go with the “bargain” option:
After a few washes, shapes become tweaked, colors fade, hems start to fringe. You’ll just end up buying more clothes—more clothes, more money.
9.好酒
9. Wine and Fine Alcohol
You’re a grown-up now so right off the bat, eliminate any liquor that also has a corresponding slushie flavor. Next, pick your poison and buy a bottle of the good stuff. You’re saving money by mixing a drink at home, and you’ll be able to tell the difference when it goes down oh-so-smooth.
Long-term cost if you go with the “bargain” option:

I'd like a gift receipt for this.
Can I get a price check for this?
What's your return policy?
Do you provide gift-wrapping?
I'm just looking. Can I help you find anything?"
Where are your fitting rooms?
Does this come in other colors?
Do you have this in other sizes?
Do you have any of these in stock?
Can I put this on hold?

Receipts, bills, and documents
Throw away receipts for items that you aren't planning on returning, and ones that you won't need to use come tax time. If you're wary of throwing away receipts, you can make a digital copy of them with a basic scanner, a pricey specialized receipt scanner, or a smartphone app.
Old magazines
Get rid of old magazines you have lying around because chances are, you aren't going to read them again. Find places where you can donate your magazines to such as child care centers, doctor's offices, nail salons, nursing homes, and libraries. If there's an article that really speaks to you, scan a digital image of it and keep it in your computer. Or keep a folder of magazine clippings if you like saving magazine articles.
Clothes
衣服
Use the two-year-rule for clothes — get rid of apparel that you haven't worn in two years. Sell them to a thrift store or donate them to the needy.
Books
图书
Go through your bookshelf and gather together books you haven't touched in months and ones that you aren't planning on rereading. Be realistic and make sure you're ruthless. If you haven't touched it in a year, you're most likely not going to read it again.
Medicine and vitamins
Take a look at your medicine closet and clear out drugs that have expired, medicine that has sat on your shelf for too long, or ones that you no longer use. First, check to see what the proper disposal methods are for the medication, and if you can't find any, check to see if your community has a drug take-back program.
Makeup and perfume
Go through your beauty cabinet and get rid of makeup that's too old or that you don't use. There are programs out there that let you recycle your makeup, such as MAC, which has a program that lets you exchange six empty containers for a new eyeshadow, lip gloss, or lipstick. Kiehl's also has a program that gives you products in exchange for Kiehl's containers. POPSUGAR Beauty has a neat list of when to throw away cosmetics.
Jewelry
Go through your jewelry and dispose of the broken costume jewelry and make plans to sell ones that you don't wear. For fine jewelry, look up appraisers from the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers. Once you have a quoted price, shop around at auction houses, pawnshops, and jewelers to see if you can find a better deal.
Food
食物
Go through your pantry and fridge and clear out items that need to be thrown out — the old, unused, and rotting. Do this weekly instead of monthly, just to make sure you don't have any unpleasant surprises!
Some memorabilia
Many organizing experts advise to be ruthless and throw away memorabilia like cards and gifts you don't use. I agree, but I think you can keep some of them by perhaps creating some sort of poster with old cards or designating a small shoe box for memorabilia. Resolve to throw away anything that can't fit into the box.
Notebooks
I don't know about you, but I have a ton of notebooks lying around. Take a look at them and throw out the ones that you no longer need. My notebooks are filled with notes from classes I take and notes from meetings.

Argentinian travellers are the most likely to indulge in hotel misappropriation, a survey has suggested, with 73 percent admitting to taking items – not including toiletries – from their room.
British guests, in comparison, would appear far more reticent – with less than half of those surveyed owning up to pinching hotel property, putting them 16th out of 28 nationalities and regions to feature.
The global poll of almost 5,000 travellers, conducted by Hotels.com, found that Singaporean and Spanish holidaymakers are also rather prone to thievery, with seven in 10 taking items from their hotel. Germany, Ireland and Russia completed the top five.
At the other end of the scale, Colombians were found to be the least likely to take something – just 31 percent admitting to bagging hotel property. They were followed by travellers from Norway, South Korea, Hong Kong and Denmark.
Hotels.com
The most common items taken by British travellers were stationary (20 percent admitted taking such items) and slippers (12 percent).
Toiletries were not included, a spokesperson said, as “everyone takes these”. Indeed, the vast majority of hotels apparently expect guests to remove all the shampoo and shower gel.
As Jacob Tomsky, author of the best-selling Heads in Beds, a memoir of ten years spent in the hotel industry, explains: “No respectable hotelier is going to want to pry open your luggage and search for shampoo. We hope you take the amenities. We want you to use them later and think of us.”
Theft of other items is not acceptable, however. In Japan a few years ago, one hotel reportedly had a young couple arrested for running off with bathrobes and an ashtray, while a woman in Nigeria was sentenced to three months in prison for stealing two towels from the Transcorp Hilton Abjua Hotel. In the vast majority of cases you would be unlikely to end up behind bars, but do the same and you can expect to be blacklisted by the hotel, or to find an extra charge on your credit card once when you get home.

Isn't it amazing how one person, sharing one idea, atthe right time and place can change the course ofyour life's history? This is certainly what happened inmy life. When I was 14, I was hitchhiking fromHouston, Texas, through El Paso on my way toCalifornia. I was following my dream, journeying withthe sun. I was a high school dropout with learningdisabilities and was set on surfing the biggest wavesin the world, first in California and then in Hawaii, where I would later live.
Upon reaching downtown El Paso, I met an old man, a bum, on the street corner. He saw mewalking, stopped me and questioned me as I passed by. He asked me if I was running awayfrom home, I suppose because I looked so young. I told him, "Not exactly, sir," since my fatherhad given me a ride to the freeway in Houston and given me his blessings while saying, "It isimportant to follow your dream and what is in your heart. Son. "
The bum then asked me if he could buy me a cup of coffee. I told him, "No, sir, but a sodawould be great." We walked to a corner malt shop and sat down on a couple of swiveling stoolswhile we enjoyed our drinks.
After conversing for a few minutes, the friendly bum told me to follow him. He told me that hehad something grand to show me and share with me. We walked a couple of blocks until wecame upon the downtown El Paso Public Library.
We walked up its front steps and stopped at a small information stand. Here the bum spoke toa smiling old lady, and asked her if she would be kind enough to watch my things for a momentwhile he and I entered the library. I left my belongings with this grandmotherly figure andentered into this magnificent hall of learning.
The bum first led me to a table and asked me to sit down and wait for a moment while helooked for something special amongst the shelves. A few moments later, he returned with acouple of old books under his arms and set them on the table. He then sat down beside me andspoke. He started with a few statements that were very special and that changed my life. Hesaid, "There are two things that I want to teach you, young man, and they are these:
"Number one is to never judge a book by its cover, for a cover can fool you. "He followed with, "I ll bet you think I m a bum, don t you, young man?"
I said, "Well, uh, yes, I guess so, sir. "
"Well, young man, I've got a little surprise for you. I am one of the wealthiest men in the world.I have probably everything any man could ever want. I originally come from the Northeast andhave all the things that money can buy. But a year ago, my wife passed away, bless her soul, and since then I have been deeply reflecting upon life. I realized there were certain things I hadnot yet experienced in life, one of which was what it would be like to live like a bum on thestreets. I made a commitment to myself to do exactly that for one year. For the past year Ihave been going from city to city doing just that. So, you see, don't ever judge a book by itscover, for a cover can fool you.
"Number two is to learn how to read, my boy. For there is only one thing that people can't takeaway from you, and that is your wisdom. " At that moment, he reached forward, grabbed myright hand in his and put them upon the books he'd pulled from the shelves. They were thewritings of Plato and Aristotle-immortal classics from ancient times.
The bum then led me back past the smiling old woman near the entrance, down the steps andback on the streets near where we first met. His parting request was for me to never forgetwhat he taught me.
I haven't.

2. Mattresses
2.床垫
A rash with the scorching intensity of a thousand burning suns.
Long-term cost if you go with the “bargain” option:
I’m not advocating a $200 shearing by the guy who cut Clinton’s hair on Air Force One, but finding a worthwhile hairstylist who can give you a cut to compliment the shape of your face (as well as something that’s easy to style at a moment’s notice) makes all the difference in the world.
Long-term cost if you go with the “bargain” option:
Bad photos that live on in social-media infamy, potential gain of unflattering nickname.
8. Clothes
8.衣服
9. Wine and Fine Alcohol
9.好酒
You’re a grown-up now so right off the bat, eliminate any liquor that also has a corresponding slushie flavor. Next, pick your poison and buy a bottle of the good stuff. You’re saving money by mixing a drink at home, and you’ll be able to tell the difference when it goes down oh-so-smooth.
Long-term cost if you go with the “bargain” option:
Hangovers: high-grade wines and liquors use high-grade ingredients and better distillery methods. This means, the product you’re putting in your body has less impurities in it.
10. A Costco Membership
10. Costo(美国量贩式超市巨头)会员
An annual Executive membership is going to put you back $110, but it’s a small price to pay for long-term savings on above-average products (not to mentioned cheaper gasoline, and prescriptions). You’re buying in bulk so if you crunch the numbers, that membership fee can pay for itself immediately.
Long-term cost if you go with the “bargain” option:
Your other option is to pay more money for less in quantities.
11. A Multipurpose Suit
Your suit doesn’t have to be from Savile Row, but those late-night local-cable commercials promising you a suit, tie, shirt and maybe a date for $80? Not good. Make sure when you buy the suit, it’s from a place that offers fittings and alterations. An expensive will take a nice chunk out of your annual wardrobe budget, but it should last you a lifetime. Tip: Buy one in solid, neutral colors—stay away from silly trends and patterns.
Long-term cost if you go with the “bargain” option:
The job you want, the woman you want, constant fear you’ll need more deodorant to get through the day.
12. Four-Star Hotel Rooms
A roadside motor lodge is great for crazy family road trips, but if you’re taking your sweetheart away for the weekend, the room that you made due with when traveling with your stinky college buddies will not fly. Remember, a fancy hotel doesn’t have to break your budget, look for online deals. Bonus tip: Active Costco membership holders get access to the company’s discount travel service. See, that Costco card’s already saving you a bundle.
Long-term cost if you go with the “bargain” option:
Knowing, all weekend, that when she says she’s “fine,” she’s not.

The first step to taking care of yourself and de-stressing is to make sure that your environment is in order. Seeing your house full of clutter can affect your mood negatively and make your personal space seem like a place you want to escape from, rather than something to look forward to coming home to. Organize a "throwing out" day every month to make sure that you don't have clutter building up. Here are some things you should consider purging from your home:

如:“The shop tried to rip me off, but I taught them a good lesson.”(那个商店企图宰我,结果让我教训了一顿)。如果真的被狠宰了一下,你当然还可以说,“I was ripped off.”或者“I was cleaned out.”
3、 4-5、“Bulk purchases”就是“大量地购买”,等于“buy something in bulk”。
How much do you want to pay for this?”
“A better price”就是“a cheaper price”。
一个意思是指人很小气,吝啬鬼是“tightwad”或“penny-pincher”;另一个意思是“卑微的”、“有失身份的”,“If you wear like that, you will look cheap.”(要是穿成那样,你看起来挺有失身份的。)
“Go”就是 “charge me”。然而,如果卖者的开价还是太高,你可以说“Could you go up a little?”。如果你的出价太低,卖者接受不了,他/她也可以相应地说“Could you go up a little?”。
10、“Give someone a break”的意思是“give someone a chance”。 另外如你友写信,你的室友却想让你帮他打水,你就可以对他说,“Give me a break, buddy, I'm busy right now.”(老兄,别烦我,我正忙着呢。)
