A light drizzle was falling as my sister Jill and I ran out of the Methodist Church, eager to get home and play with the presents that Santa had left for us and our baby sister, Sharon. Across the street from the church was a Pan American gas station where the Greyhound bus stopped. It was closed for Christmas, but I noticed a family standing outside the locked door, huddled under the narrow overhang in an attempt to keep dry. I wondered briefly why they were there but then forgot about them as I raced to keep up with Jill.
Once we got home, there was barely time to enjoy our presents. We had to go off to our grandparents' house for our annual Christmas dinner. As we drove down the highway through town, I noticed that the family was still there, standing outside the closed gas station.
My father was driving very slowly down the highway. The closer we got to the turnoff for my grandparents' house, the slower the car went. Suddenly, my father U-turned in the middle of the road and said, "I can't stand it!"
"What?" asked my mother.
"It's those people back there at the Pan Am, standing in the rain. They've got children. It's Christmas. I can't stand it."
When my father pulled into the service station, I saw that there were five of them: the parents and three children - two girls and a small boy.
My father rolled down his window. "Merry Christmas," he said.
"Howdy," the man replied. He was very tall and had to stoop slightly to peer into the car. Jill, Sharon, and I stared at the children, and they stared back at us.
"You waiting on the bus?" my father asked.
The man said that they were. They were going to Birmingham, where he had a brother and prospects of a job.
"Well, that bus isn't going to come along for several hours, and you're getting wet standing here. Winborn's just a couple miles up the road. They've got a shed with a cover there, and some benches," my father said. "Why don't y'all get in the car and I'll run you up there."
The man thought about it for a moment, and then he beckoned to his family. They climbed into the car. They had no luggage, only the clothes they were wearing.
Once they settled in, my father looked back over his shoulder and asked the children if Santa had found them yet. Three glum faces mutely gave him his answer.
"Well, I didn't think so," my father said, winking at my mother, "because when I saw Santa this morning, he told me that he was having trouble finding all, and he asked me if he could leave your toys at my house. We'll just go get them before I take you to the bus stop."
All at once, the three children's faces lit up, and they began to bounce around in the back seat, laughing and chattering.
When we got out of the car at our house, the three children ran through the front door and straight to the toys that were spread out under our Christmas tree. One of the girls spied Jill's doll and immediately hugged it to her breast. I remember that the little boy grabbed Sharon's ball. And the other girl picked up something of mine. All this happened a long time ago, but the memory of it remains clear. That was the Christmas when my sisters and I learned the joy of making others happy.
My mother noticed that the middle child was wearing a short-sleeved dress, so she gave the girl Jill's only sweater to wear.
My father invited them to join us at our grandparents' for Christmas dinner, but the parents refused. Even when we all tried to talk them into coming, they were firm in their decision.
Back in the car, on the way to Winborn, my father asked the man if he had money for bus fare.
His brother had sent tickets, the man said.
My father reached into his pocket and pulled out two dollars, which was all he had left until his next payday. He pressed the money into the man's hand. The man tried to give it back, but my father insisted. "It'll be late when you get to Birmingham, and these children will be hungry before then. Take it. I've been broke before, and I know what it's like when you can't feed your family."
We left them there at the bus stop in Winborn. As we drove away, I watched out the window as long as I could, looking back at the little gihugging her new doll.

When love beckons you, follow him, though his ways are hard and stccp. And when his wings enfold you, yield to him, though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you. And when he speaks to you, believe in him, though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.
For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning. Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your most tender branches that quiver in the sun,so shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.
All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets of your heart and in that knowledge become a fragment of life's heart.But if,in your fear,you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure,then it is better for you that you cover your nakeness and pass out of love's threshing-floor. into the season less world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep. but not all of your tears. Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from pssesse, not nor would it be possessed. for love is sufficient into love.
Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself. But if you love and have desires, don't let these be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love
And to bleed willingly andjoyfully.
To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude; And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart.
清晨,带着一颗生翼的心醒来,感谢又一个充满爱的日子;
午休,沉思爱的心醉神怡;

Once upon a time, there was an island where all the feelings lived: Happiness, Sadness, Knowledge, and all of the others, including Love. One day it was announced to the feelings that the island would sink, so all constructed boats and left. Except for Love.
Love was the only one who stayed. Love wanted to hold out until the last possible moment.
When the island had almost sunk, Love decided to ask for help.
Richness was passing by Love in a grand boat. Love said,"Richness, can you take me with you?"
Richness answered, "No, I can't. There is a lot of gold and silver in my boat. There is no place here for you."
Love decided to ask Vanity who was also passing by in a beautiful vessel. "Vanity, please help me!"
"I can't help you, Love. You are all wet and might damage my boat," Vanity answered.
Sadness was close by so Love asked, "Sadness, let me go with you."
"Oh . . . Love, I am so sad that I need to be by myself!"
Happiness passed by Love, too, but she was so happy that she did not even hear when Love called her.
Suddenly, there was a voice, "Come, Love, I will take you." It was an elder. So blessed and overjoyed, Love even forgot to ask the elder where they were going. When they arrived at dry land, the elder went her own way. Realizing how much was owed the elder, Love asked Knowledge, another elder, "Who Helped me?"
"It was Time," Knowledge answered.
"Time?" asked Love. "But why did Time help me?"
Knowledge smiled with deep wisdom and answered, "Because only Time is capable of understanding how valuable Love is."

11th grade
11年级
The phone rang.On the other end,it was her .She was in tears,mumbling on and on about how her love had broke her heart.She asked me to come over because she didn't want to be alone,so I did.As I sat next to her on the sofa,I stared at her soft eyes.wishing she was mine.After 2 hours,one Drew Barrymore movie,and three bags of chips,she decided to go to sleep.
She looked at me ,said"thanks"and gave me a kiss on the check.I want to tell her,I want her to know that I don't to be just friends,I love her but I am just tooshy,and I don't know why.
Senior year
12年级
The day before prom she walked to my locker."My date is sick",she said;he's not going to go well,I didn't have a date,and in 7th grade,we made a promise that if neither of us had dates,we would go together just as"best friends",So we did.Prom might,after everything was over,I was standing at her front door step!I started at her as she smiled at me and started at me with her crystal eyes.I want her to be mine,but she isn't thinking of me like that,and I know it.Then she said "I had the best time,thanks!"and gave me a kiss on the cheek.I want to tell her.I want her to know that I don't want to be just friends. I love her but I am just too shy,and I don't know why.
Graduation Day
A day passed,then a week,then a month.Before I could blink,it was graduation day .I watched as her perfect body floated like an angel up on stage to get her diploma.I wanted her to be mine,but she didn't notice me like thet,and I knew it.Before everyone went home,she came to me in her smock and hat,and cried as I hugged her.Then she lifted her head from my shoulder and said,"you are my best friends ,thanks"and gave me a kiss on the cheek.I want to tell her,I want her to knoww that I don't want to be just friends .I love her I am just too shy,and I don't know why.
A Few Years Later
几年后
Now I sit in the pews of the church.That girl is getting married now.I watched her say "I do"and drive off to her ne life,married to another man.I wanted her to be mine,but she didn't see me like that,and I knew it.But before she drove away,she came to me and said"you came!"She said"thanks"and kissed me on the cheek.I want to the cheek.I want to tell her,I want her to know that I want her to know that I don't want to be just friends ,I love her but I am just too shy,and I don't know why.
Funeral
Years passed,I looked down at the coffin of a girl who used to be my"best friend",At the service ,they read a diary entry she had wrote in her high school years.This is what it read.I stare at him wishing he was mine,but he doesn't notice me like that,and I know it,I want to tell him,I want him to know that I don't want to be just friends,I love him just too shy,and I don't why .I wish he would tell me he loved me!
I wish I did too,I thought to myself,and I cried.
A woman came out of her house and saw three old men with long hite beards sitting in her front yard.She did not recognize them.She said"I don't think I know you,but you must be hungry.Please come in and have something to eat."
"Is the man of the house home?"they asked.
"No,"she said."He's out."
"Then we cannot come in",they replied,
In the evening when her husband came home,she told him what had happened."Go tell them I am home and invite in!"The woman went out and invited the men in.
"We do not go into a house together ,"they replied.
"Why is that?"she wanted to know.
One of the old men explained:"His name is Wealth,"he said pointing to one of his friends, and said pointing to another one,"He is Success,and I am Love."Then he added,"Now go in and discuss with your husband which one of us you want in your home."
The woman went in and told her husband what was said.Her huaband was overjoyed."How nice!",he said."Since that is the case,let us invite Wealth.Let him come and fill our home with wealth!"
His wife disagreed,"My dear,why don't we invite Success?"Their daughter-in-law was listening from the other corner of the house.She jumped in with her own suggestion:"Would it not be better to invite Love?Our home will then be filled with love!"
"Let us heed our daughter-in-law's advice,"said the husband to his wife."Go out and invite Love to be our guest."
The woman went out and asked the three old men,"Which one of you is Love?Please come in and be our guest."
Love got up and started walking toward the house.The other two also got up and followed him.Surprised,the lady asked Wealth and Success:"I only invited Love,why are you coming in?"
The old men replied together:"If you had invited Wealth or Success,the other two of us would have stayed,but since you invited Love,wherever he goes,we go with him.Wherever there is Love,there is also Weath and Success!"

The love world is big, which can hold hundreds of disappointments;
the love world is small which is crowded even with three people inside.
原来爱情的世界很大,大到可以装下上百种委屈;
To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world.
Don’t waste your time on a man/woman, who isn’t willing to waste their time on you.
Don’t try so hard, the best things come when you least expect them to.
Maybe God wants us to meet a few wrong people before meeting the right one,
so that when we finally meet the person, we will know how to be grateful.
在遇到梦中人之前,上天也许会安排我们先遇到别的人;
It is better bo have love and lost than never to have loved at all.
Love me little, love me long.
To live in a world without you is more painful than any punishment.
Do you know that no one can replace you in my heart?
If love is a mountain, then if men go up,
more women they will see while women will see fewer men.
Love makes man grow up or sink down.
The only thing you can do when you no longer have something is not to forget.
To forgive is not to forget, nor remit, but let it go;
to be lonely is not because you have no friends, but no one is living in your heart.
The worst way to miss someone is to be
sitting right beside them knowing you can’t have them.
To keep someone around you is not love; love is to let the one you love go freely.
During the whole life, you will regret for two things:
one is that you don’t get the one you love and the other is the one you love is not happy.
Don’t cry because it is over, smile because it happened.
Never expect the perfect man,
it’s not because that you cannot find, but just because there is no perfect man.
An unacceptable love needs no sorrow but sometime for forgetting.
A badly-hurt heart needs no sympathy but understanding.
I love you not because of who you are, but because of who I am when I am with you.
No man or woman is worth your tears, and the one who is, won’t make you cry.
It’s often said that you will have the same life as the person you find.
Therefore, different choices make different endings.
Sometimes you need to look back,
otherwise you will never know what you have lost in the way of forever searching.
Most of people are looking forward the crystal-like love—pure without any defect.
However the truth is most people are having the glass-like love.
The one you love also loves you. This is a miracle.
And the god names this as falling in love with each other.

If you want to answer it immediately, you shall know how happy you are.
Hope and trust is the tail of a lizard, which can reproduce even after being cut off.
Do you think that the sourest feeling is to be jealous?
No, the sourest thing is that you have no rights to be jealous.
That’s the sourest thing.
The worst way to miss someone is to be sitting right beside them knowing you can't have them.
To lost in something you love is better than to win in something you hate.
It is better bo have love and lost than never to have loved at all.
I know that love shall not be compared, but I still used to complaining what he is lack of.
Never frown, even when you are sad,
because you never know who is falling in love with your smile.
Love is an impossible meeting.
For example, I am a bird flying in sky,
you are a leopard in forest. We just fall in love accidentally.
When someone abandons you, it is him that gets loss
because he lost someone who truly loves him
but you just lost one who doesn’t love you.
Just because someone doesn’t love you the way you want them to,
doesn’t mean they don’t love you with all they have.
Good love makes you see the whole world from one person
while bad love makes you abandon the whole world for one person.
Why to ask so much when you are in love?
The mature never ask the past,
the wise never ask the present
and the open-minded never ask the future.
The key for happiness is not to find a perfect person,
but find someone and build a perfect relationship with him.

You know my heart; you know that all there is desire, thought, boding and longing; you live among spirits and they give you divine wisdom. You must nourish me; you give all that in advance, which I do not understand to ask for.
My mind has a small embrace, my love a large one; you must bring them to a balance. Love cannot be quiet till the mind matches its growth; you are matched to my love; you are friendly, kind, and indulgent; let me know when my heart is off the balance. I understand your silent signs.
A look from your eyes into mine, a kiss from you upon my lips, instructs me in all, what might seem delighted to learn, - to one who, like me, had experience from those. I am far from you; mine are become strange to me.
I must ever return in thought to that hour when you hold me in the soft fold of your arm. Then I begin to weep, but the tears dry again unawares. Yes, he reaches with his love (thus I think) over to me in this concealed stillness; and should not I, with my eternal undisturbed loving, reach to him in the distance?
Ah, conceive what my heart has to say to you; it overflows with soft sighs all whisper to you. Be my only happiness on earth your friendly will to me. O, dear friend, give me but a sign that you are conscious of me.

I have your letter, my adorable love. It has filled my heart with joy since I left you I have been sad all the time. My only happiness is near you. I go over endlessly in my thought of your kisses, your tears, your delicious jealousy. The charm of my wonderful Josephine kindles a living, blazing fire in-my heart and senses.
When shall I be able to pass every minute near you, with nothing to do but to love you and nothing to think of but the pleasure of telling you of it and giving you proof of it?
I loved you some time ago; since then I feel that I love you a thousand times better. Ever since I have known you I adore you more every day. That proves how wrong is that saying of La Bruyere "Love comes all of a sudden. "
Ah, let me see some of your faults; be less beautiful, less graceful, less tender, less good. But never be jealous and never shed tears. Your tears send me out of my mind they set my very blood on fire.
Believe me that it is utterly impossible for me to have a single thought that is not yours, a single fancy that is not submissive to your will. Rest well. Restore your health. Come back to me and then at any rate before we die we ought to be able to say: "We were happy for so very many days!" Millions of kisses even to your dog.

All thoughts, all passions, all delights,
Whatever stirs thi mortal frame,
All are but ministers of Love,
And feed his sacred flame.
Oft in my waking dreams do I
Live o'er again that happy hour,
When midway on the mount I lay,
Beside the ruin'd tower.
一遍遍重温那幸福时刻;
The moonshine,stealing o'er the scene,
Had blended with the lights of eve;
And she was there, my hope, my joy,
My own dear Genevieve!
同茫茫暮色融汇在一处;
She lean'd against the armed man,
The statue of the armed Knight;
SHe stood and listen'd to my lay,
Amid the lingering light.
那是全副武装的骑士像;
Few sorrows hath she of her own,
My hope!my joy! my Genevieve!
She loves me best whene'er I sing
The songs that make her grieve.
I play'd a soft and doleful air;
I sing an old and moving story--
An old rude song, that suited well
That ruin wild and hoary.
我常起古老动人的古似乎;
She listen'd with a flitting blush,
With downcast eyes and modest grace;
For well she knew I could not choose
But gaze upon her face.
脸一红的神情谦恭优雅;
I told her of the Knight that wore
Upon his shield a burning brand;
And that for ten long years he woo'd
The Lady of the Land.
他盾上的图案是把火剑;
I told her how he pined and ah!
The deep, the low, the pleading tone
With which I sang another's love,
Interpreted my own.
我告诉她,骑士如何憔悴;
She listen'd with a flitting blush,
With downcast eyes, and modest grace;
And she forgave me, that I gazed
Too fondly on her face!
脸一红的神情谦恭优雅;
But when I told the cruel scorn
That crazed that bold and lovely Knight,
And that he cross'd the mountain-woods,
Nor rested day nor night;
把勇敢可爱的骑士气疯;
只一心要穿越山林;
That sometimes from the savage den,
And sometimes from the darksome shade,
And sometimes staring up at once
In green and sunny glad--
There came and look'd him in the face
An angel beautiful and bright;
And that he knew it was a Fiend,
This miserable Knight!
直盯着骑士的脸庞凝视;
And that, unknowing what he did,
He leap'd amid a murderous band,
And saved from outrage worse than death
The Lady of the Land;--
And how she wept and clasp'd his knees;
And how she tended him in vain--
And ever strove to expiate
The scorn that crazed his brain;--
徒然地把他看护和照顾;
And that she nursed him in a cave;
And how his madness went away,
When on the yellow forest leaves
A dying man he lay;--
His dying words--but when I reach'd
That tenderest strain of all the ditty,
My faltering voice and pausing harp
Disturb'd her soul with pity!
All inpulses of soul and sense
Had thrill'd my guileless Genevieve;
The music and the doleful tale,
The rich and balmy eve;
绚丽而芬芳的夜幕;
And hopes, and fears that kindle hope,
An undistinguishable throng,
And gentle wishes long subdued,
Subdued and cherish'd long!
She wept with pity and delight,
She blush'd with love and virgin shame;
And like the murmur of a dream,
I heard her breathe my name.
为爱和处女的羞怯脸红;
Her bosom heaved--she stepp'd aside,
As conscious of my look she stept--
Then suddenly, with timorous eye
She fled to me and wept.
就好似感觉到我的眼神;
She half enclosed me with her arms,
She press'd me with a meek embrace;
And bending back her head, look'd up,
And gazed upon my face.
羞答答地把我抱在胸前;
'Twas partly love, and partly fear,
And partly 'twas a bashful art,
That I mightrather feel, than see,
The swelling of her heart.
I calm'd her fears, and she was calm,
And told her love with virgin pride;
And so I won my Genevieve,
My bright and beauteous Bride.
骄傲地说出她处女的爱;

As a teenager,I felt I was always letting people down. I was rebellious1 out-side,but I wantedto be liked inside.
Once I left home to hitch-hike2 to California with my friend Penelope. The trip wasn't easy,andthere were many times I didn't feel safe. One situation in particular kept me grateful to stillbe alive. When I returned home,I was different,not so outwardly sure of myself.
I was happy to be home. But then I noticed that Penelope,who was staying with us,waswearing my clothes. And my family seemed to like her better than me. I wondered if I would bemissed if I weren't there. I told my mom,and she explained that though Penelope was a lovelygirl,no one could replace me. I pointed out,"She is more patient and is neater than I haveever been." My mom said these were wonderful qualities,but I was the only person who couldfill my role. She made me realize that even with my faults-and there were many-I was a lovedmember of the family who couldn't be replaced.
I became a searcher,wanting to find out who I was and what made me unique. My view ofmyself was changing. I wanted a solid base to start from. I started to resist3 pressure to actin ways that I didn't like any more,and I was delighted by who I really was. I came to feelmuch more sure that no one can ever take my place.
Each of us holds a unique place in the world. You are special,no matter what others say orwhat you may think. So forget about being replaced. You can't be.

Oh God! I think I was about seven and half when my sisters and I pulled this stupid stunt. I remember watching television with them and the show on happened to be our favorite program to watch. All of a sudden we heard my brother, Chris, yelling from the backyard. So we all headed out there to see what happened. When we finally located him, he was in a tree hanging from the highest tree branch. Crying, he explained to us that he had climbed up the tree and couldn't get down. We thought, okay, one of us should climb up and get him off, but we couldn't manage to get him moving down.
It was then my youngest sister, Ka, who was five and a half at the time had seen a similar situation. She suggested we grab a sheet, hold it under the branch Chris was hanging off of, and tell him to drop so we can catch him. My other sister, Yams, who is one year younger than me, peered at me to confirm the idea and I said "Yeah, let's try that".
So we grabbed a sheet from the closet and went to hold it beneath the tree. Now mind you, the ages holding this blanket were ranging from seven and a half to five and a half, thus the sheet was probably being held up to our waist and also close to touching the ground. But we were confident it could work.
We looked up to Chris and he looked down at us a bit hesitant. I don't blame him the poor guy. It was then we told him to let go and to fall on his back. Chris looked at me and asked "Are you sure I'll land on the blanket?" Now, my brother at the age of four, had a cute squeaky voice. But because of a problem at birth with his tongue being a bit attached to the mouth, it came out more like this, "Ah you sho awill lan on da blanked?", "Yup!", I told him, "We're sure!" and he let go.
Now when I think about Chris letting go of that branch, I think of his faith in me and my sisters and I also think how stupid he was to trust us, cause when that boy let go he was in for a big surprise. Chris fell right through that sheet and landed right on his stomach. And no matter how tight we held on to the sheet, he still managed to get through.
We were shocked and a bit worried and we looked at the ground where he landed. This tiny seventy pound boy had made a hole right through the sheet and landed. He was positioned like one of those chalk drawings you find after a homicide, with one arm near the head another to the side and the knee bent a bit. We might as well have drawn an outline because he wasn't moving. So we bent down to check if he was still alive and when we asked him if he was okay he uttered these five words… "Ah stee hi da flow" in other words, "I still hit the floor!" Poor little man! But before you condemn us, Chris is fourteen now and he still bugs us about it, any tree he climbs he gets down on his own and, strangely, he wants to be a fireman when he grows up. Now he can write that he had personal experience about jumping and catching. See, no harm done…
In our life, we have rarely expressed our gratitude to the one who’d lived those years with us. In fact, we don’t have to wait for anniversaries to thank the ones closet to us—the ones so easily overlooked. If I have learned anything about giving thanks, it is this: give it now! while your feeling of appreciation is alive and sincere, act on it. Saying thanks is such an easy way to add to the world’s happiness.
Saying thanks not only brightens someone else’s world, it brightens yours. If you’re feeling left out, unloved or unappreciated, try reaching out to others. It may be just the medicine you need.
Of course, there are times when you can’t express gratitude immediately. In that case don’t let embarrassment sink you into silence-speak up the first time you have the chance.
Once a young minister, Mark Brian, was sent to a remote parish of Kwakiutl Indians in British Columbia. The Indians, he had been told, did not have a word for thank you. But Brian soon found that these people had exceptional generosity. Instead of saying thanks, it is their custom to return every favor with a favor of their own, and every kindness with an equal or superior kindness. They do their thanks.
I wonder if we had no words in our vocabulary for thank you, would we do a better job of communicating our gratitude? Would we be more responsive, more sensitive, more caring?
Thankfulness sets in motion a chain reaction that transforms people all around us—including ourselves. For no one ever misunderstands the melody of a grateful heart. Its message is universal; its lyrics transcend all earthly barriers; its music touches the heavens.

She left her shoes, she took everything else, her toothbrush, her clothes, and even that stupid little silver vase on the table we kept candy in. Just dumped it out on the table and took the vase. The tiny apartment we shared seemed different now, her stuff was gone, it wasn't much really, although now the room seemed like a jigsaw puzzle with a few pieces missing, incomplete. The closet seemed empty too; most of it was her stuff anyway. But there they were at the bottom, piled up like they usually were, every single one of them. Why did she leave her shoes? She couldn't have forgotten them, I knew too well that she took great pride in her shoe collection, but there they still were, right down to her favorite pair of sandals. They were black with a design etched into the wide band that stretched across the top of them, the soles scuffed and worn; a delicate imprint of where her toes rested was visible in the soft fabric.
It seemed funny to me, she walked out of my life without her shoes, is that irony, or am I thinking of something else? In a way I was glad they were still here, she would have to come back for them, right? I mean how could she go on with the rest of her life without her shoes? But she's not coming back, I know she isn't, she would rather walk barefoot over glass than have to see me again. But Christ she left all of her shoes! All of them, every sneaker, boot and sandal, every high heel and clog, every flip-flop. What do I do? Do I leave them here, or bag them up and throw them in the trash? Do I look at them every morning when I get dressed and wonder why she left them? She knew it, she knows what's she's doing. I can't throw them out for fear she may return for them someday. I can't be rid of myself of her completely with all her shoes still in my life, can't dispose of them or the person that walked in them.
Her shoes, leaving a deep footprint on my heart, I can't sweep it away. All I can do is stare at them and wonder, stare at their laces and straps their buttons and tread. They still connect me to her though, in some distant bizarre way they do. I can remember the good times we had, what pair she was wearing at that moment in time. They are hers and no else's, she wore down the heels, and she scuffed their sides, it's her fragile footprint imbedded on the insole. I sit on the floor next to them and wonder how many places had she gone while wearing these shoes, how many miles she walked in them, what pair was she wearing when she decided to leave me? I pick up a high heel she often wore and absently smell it, it's not disgusting I think, it's just the last tangible link I have to her. The last bit of reality I have of her. She left her shoes; she took everything else, except her shoes. They remain at the bottom of my closet, a shrine to her memory.
