When the man saw this he put a halter on the ass at once, and gave him back to his owner.

A LION was awakened from sleep by a Mouse running over his face. Rising up angrily, he caught him and was about to kill him, when the Mouse piteously entreated, saying: "If you would only spare my life, I would be sure to repay your kindness." The Lion laughed and let him go. It happened shortly after this that the Lion was caught by some hunters, who bound him by strong ropes to the ground. The Mouse, recognizing his roar, came and gnawed the rope with his teeth and set him free, exclaiming:
"You ridiculed the idea of my ever being able to help you, expecting to receive from me any repayment of your favor; now you know that it is possible for even a Mouse to con benefits on a Lion."

He saw the young shoots break through the soil and grow taller each day, but still, he thought they were growing too slowly. Eventually he got impatient with the young plants and suddenly he hit upon an idea that one by one, he pulled up the young plants by half an inch. The Father and His Son
Father had a family of sons who were perpetually quarrelling among themselves. When he failed to heal their disputes by his exhortations, he determined to give them a practical illustration of the evils of disunion; and for this purpose he one day told them to bring him a bundle of sticks. When they had done so, he placed the faggot into the hands of each of them in succession, and ordered them to break it in pieces. They each tried with all their strength, and were not able to do it.
He next unclosed the faggot, and took the sticks separately, one by one, and again put them into their hands, on which they broke them easily. He then addressed them in these words: "My sons, if you are of one mind, and unite to assist each other, you will be as this faggot, uninjured by all the attempts of your enemies; but if you are divided among yourselves, you will be broken as
easily as these sticks."

A little mouse living on a farm was looking through a crack in the wall one day and saw thefarmer and his wife opening a package.
The mouse was intrigued by what food the package may contain. He was aghast to discoverthat it was a mousetrap. The mouse ran to the farmyard warning everyone: “There is amousetrap in the house, there is a mousetrap in the house.”
The chick raised his head and said, “Mr. Mouse, I can tell you this trap is a grave concern toyou, but it has no consequence to me and I cannot be bothered with it.”
The mouse turned to the pig, “I am so sorry Mr. Mouse, but the trap is no concern of mineeither!” the pig said.
The mouse then turned to the bull, “It sounds like you have a problem, Mr. Mouse, but notone that concerns me.” the bull said.
The mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected that no one would help him or hasconcerned about his dilemma.
He knew he had to face the trap on his own. That night the sound of a trap catching its preywas heard throughout the house. The farmer’s wife rushed to see what was caught. In thedarkness she could not see that it was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught.
The snake bit the farmer’s wife. The wife caught a bad fever and the farmer knew the best wayto treat a fever was with chicken soup. The farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard to get thesoup’s main ingredient.
The wife got sicker and friends and neighbors came by to take turns sitting with her round theclock. The farmer knew he had to feed them, so he butchered the pig.
The farmer’s wife did not get better, in fact she died and so many friends and family came toher funeral that the farmer had to slaughter the bull to feed all of them.
So the next time we hear that one of our teammates is facing a problem and think it does notconcern or effect us, let us remember that when any one of us is in trouble, we are all at risk.

Happiness passed by Love, too, but she was so happy that she did not even hear when Lovecalled her.
Suddenly, there was a voice, "Come, Love, I will take you." It was an elder. So blessed andoverjoyed, Love even forgot to ask the elder where they were going. When they arrived at dryland, the elder went her own way. Realizing how much was owed the elder,
Love asked Knowledge, another elder, "Who Helped me?"
"It was Time," Knowledge answered.
"Time?" asked Love. "But why did Time help me?"
Knowledge smiled with deep wisdom and answered, "Because only Time is capable ofunderstanding how valuable Love is."

(一)A little box 小箱子
How oft the commonest of tasks looks long and tiresome1 till begun. To use your wits, is all it asks, start doing, and it's done.
They brought John Brown a box, fresh from the workman's hands. Twas work that took the eye, so neatly2, cleanly done. This charming little box delighted everyone.
Then in comes a mechanic. Oh yes, these things he understands. He glances at the box. 'This box has got some trick. You see it has no lock. And yet I warrant you, I'll have it open quick. You boobies over there, don't mock! Just wait! I'll find the catch, then show the trick to you. In matters of this kind I know a thing or two.'
He sets to work, leaves nothing untried. He turns it round on every side; he guesses and he guesses. One knob and then the next, and then the handle presses. John looks at him and all the while Just shakes his head and James and Ned whisper among themselves and smile. From time to time some onlooker3 will say: 'Not that way! No, not there!'
But harder still and harder he puzzles, he perspires4, till damped is all his ardour. He gives it up and puts it on the shelf. And why not raise the lid? He never tried that way! This was a box that opened of itself.
(二)The labourer and the snake 工人和蛇
A labourer's little son was bitten by a snake and died of the wound. The father was beside himself with grief, and in his anger against the snake the caught up an axe1 and went and stood close to the snake's hole, and watched for a chance of killing2 it. Presently the snake come out, and the man aimed a blow at it, but only succeeded in cutting of the tip of its tail before it wriggled3 in again. He then tried to get it to come out a second time, pretending that he wished to make up the quarrel. But the snake said, "I can never be your friend because of my lost tail, nor you mine because of your lost child."
Injuries are never forgotten in the presence of those who caused them.
(三)The blind man and the cub 盲人与小野兽
There was once a blind man who had so fine a sense of touch that, when any animal was put into his hands, he could tell what it was merely by the feel of it. One day the cub of a wolf was put into his hands, and he was asked what it was. He felt it for some time, and then said, "Indeed, I am not sure whether it is a wolf's cub or a fox's: but this I know -- it would never do to trust it in a sheepfold."
Evil tendencies are early shown.

To her luck the leader entered and she timidly knocked at the door.
She bravely approached him and handed him a bunch of red roses and in her excitement the thorns pricked her hand but she did not make much ado about the pain.
The leader observed her action as she told him her dream. "Alright, you dance and I will give you my verdict."

This time she was determined to find out Why the leader had told her she was not good enough when all her teachers thought otherwise.
This was his reply, "I tell this to every student." She angrily shot back, "You've ruined my life!一 Then she got a further shock, "
I remember your gift of roses and how the thorns had pricked your fingers but you carried on bravery.
If you only had treated bal}et like that and did not give up so easily; therefore, you still deserve my verdict! "

A Fox invited a long-beaked Stork to have dinner with him.
“I hope you don’t mind sharing the same dish with me,” said the Fox. “It is our custom in thewoods to eat together to show that we are friendly.”
“Not at all,” said the Stork politely.
The Fox brought a wide, shallow bowl of thin soup and set it between them.
‘please help yourself,” he said, setting down to lap the soup with his long pink tongue.
The Stork stood with her long legs apart and put the tip of her long, thin beak into the soup;but although she tried to scoop up the thin liquid it was quite impossible for her to do so.
Even when she did manage to hold a few drops in her beak they were lost long before theycould trickle down to her throat. Too polite to complain, the Stork went home hungry whilethe greedy Fox lapped up all the soup. As she left she heard him laughing to himself at his owncleverness.
A few days later the Stork invited the Fox to have dinner with her in return and the Fox madehis way to her home.
“it is our custom to share a dish, too,” said the Stork, “ I hope you will join me.”
“Certainly, certainly,” said the Fox, licking his lips. He had not eaten all day.
The Stork brought her food. This time, however, it was served in a tall, thin jug with a narrowopening at the top.
“Please begin,” said the Stork, thrusting her beak into the jug.
“Mmmm. It is good.”
Of course the Fox could not get his nose into the jug at all. All he could do was sniff hungrily atthe delicious smell and lick the occasional drop that spilled over the side.
“I suppose I can’t complain,” he said to himself sadly as he made his way back to the woods. “After all, I taught her the trick myself.”

"Old grandma, why are you grinding this iron rod?"
The old woman replied: "To make a needle."

Hearing the old woman's words, Li Bai was enlightened.
Since then, Li Bai studied hard and made rapid progress. Eventually he became a famous poet.

It looked like rain. The sky was gray. It was almost noon, but the sun was hidden by a gray blanket. It was cool. There were no birds flying anywhere. A couple of birds sat on the telephone wire. Bob was standing outside talking to Bill. They both had their hands in their pockets. They knew that it was probably going to rain shortly. A sudden breeze blew some leaves off a tree onto the sidewalk.
A young woman wearing a dark blue coat and jeans walked by. She was walking a small dog. It was pure white, and pretty. It sniffed at a tree trunk. The woman waited patiently. Finally, the dog lifted its leg.
Bob said that he liked the rain. It was a nice change from the usual hot Los Angeles weather. And the plants could always use the extra water. Bill said the only thing he didn’t like about rain was that all the motor oil on the streets would get washed into the ocean, and so would all the trash.
"But that never stops the surfers," Bob said. "They don’t seem to care what’s in the water, as long as there are waves to surf on."
