一、DREAMS
------ Langston Hughes
Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.
RESULTS AND ROSES
------ Edgar Albert Guest
The man who wants a garden fair,
Or small or very big,
With flowers growing here and there,
Must bend his back and dig.
The things are mighty few on earth,
That wishes can attain,
Whatever we want of any worth,
We ve got to work to gain.
It matters not what goal you seek,
Its secret here reposes:
You ve got to dig from week to week,
To get results or roses.

TODAY IS A NEW DAY
------ Donna Levine
Your tomorrows are as bright
as you want to make them.
There is no reason to carry
the darkness of the past
with you into today.
Today is a wonderful new experience,
full of every possibility to make
your life exactly what you want it to be.
Today is the beginning of new happiness,
new directions and new relationships.
Today is the day to remind yourself
that you posses the power
and strength you need
to bring contentment, love and joy into your life.
Today is the day to understand yourself
and to give yourself the love
and the patience that you need.
Today is the day to move forward

Because it rains when we wish it wouldn't,
Because men do what they often should't,
Because crops fail, and plans go wrong-
Some of us grumble all day long.
But sometimes,in spite of the care and doubt,
It seems at last that things work out.
Because we lose where we hoped to gain,
Because we suffer a little pain,
Because we must work when we'd like to play-
Some of us whimper along life's way.
But somehow , as the day always follow the night
Most of our troubles work out all right.
Because we cannot forever smile,
Because we must trudge in the dust awhile,
Some of us whimper that life's all wrong.
But somehow,we live and our sky grows bright,
And ererything seems to work out all right.
So bend to your trouble and meet your care,
For the clouds must break, and the sky grows fair.
Let the rain come down,as it must and will,
But keep on working and hoping still.
For in spite of the grumblers who stand about,
Somehow,it seems,all things work out.

The hummingbird was lost in the supermarket, exhausted, starving, and near death as it spiraled towards the ground on helpless wings.
I snatched her away from the crushing carts, cupped her in my hands, and rushed for the exit.
She was tiny and soft against my palms. I ran out towards the flowers. She was too weak to perch; I cupped her in my palm and held her up to each flower to drink.
Slowly, she perked up and her claws tightened on my finger. Then she spread her wings and flew on her own: a tiny, sweet miracle.

If you want to understand adversity, take two identical acorns from the same oak tree andplant them in two different locations. Plant the first in the middle of a dense forest, and theother on a hill by itself.
Here's what will happen. The oak standing on a hillside is exposed to every storm and gale. Asa result its roots plunge deep into the earth and spread in every direction, even wrappingthemselves around giant boulders. At times it may seem the tree isn't growing fast enough—but the growth is happening underground. It's as if the roots know they must ported thetree from the threatening elements.
What about the acorn planted in the forest? It becomes a weak, frail sapling. And since it isprotected by its neighbors, the little oak doesn't sense the need to spread its roots forsupport.
Don't be afraid of adversity! Welcome it! That's your surefire route to ultimate success.

Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration
As Thomas Edison said,
"Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration"
However clever you are, you will achieve nothing unless you work hard.
For example, you cannot only depend on your intelligence to pass an exam You have to study hard or you'll fail no matter how smart you are.
Indeed, success doesn’t come without hard work

Everybody wants success. Some people aim for it; others just talk about it. We all know what it looks like when someone else has it. Often times it just seems like something too far out of reach.
The truth to success is closer than you think. It's just on the other side you have to want it enough, and be willing enough to get it.
Fear is your biggest obstacle fear of failure, fear of the judgment of others; fear of actually succeeding. It will trip you up every time. It will cause you to make decisions that may seem “right” at the time, but they're preventing you from actually getting over that wall.
Success has no excuses. You either get it or you don't. The minute you find a reason not to take another step towards success is the moment you stop being successful. In the symphony of success, excuses are just noise.
On the other side of obstacles
Everyone faces changes; different ones at different times. We all handle the same challenges differently; we all have different results. It's how you handle each one and what you do with the results that count. An obstacle is something you either find a way around or allow to stop you. Remember, you've got to get passed obstacles in order to succeed.
On the other side of failures
Not everything works; even if it works for other people, the same thing just doesn't work for us. So what? Failure can either become an obstacle and an excuse or it can become your teacher in what not to do.
It takes effort, commitment and follow-through
They call it aladder of success for a reason… because you need to climb it in order to get somewhere. It's not an escalator. You just don't stand there and let it do the work for you. You have to do the work yourself. Sometimes it will be easy; other times you'll be carrying a heavy load on your shoulders. The ladder remains the same. Success still waits on the other side. It's going to take determination and persistence on your part to get up and over that wall.
Which side do you want to be on?

On Easter Sunday, 1945, the last year of the war, my wife and I were in Marseilles. We had just arrived for four days’ rest, after a tour of entertaining the troops in Burma. It was a wonderful morning, sparkling but not too warm. There were no tourists, of course, and we decided to drive along the Riviera to Vence and call on Matisse. We had never met the painter, but we knew well his son Pierre in New York.
We found Matisse living in a small house, with a magnificent, sweeping view beyond his vegetable garden. In one room, there was a cage with a lot of fluttering birds. The place was covered with paintings, most of them obviously new ones. I marveled at his production, and I asked him, “What is your inspiration?”
“I grow artichokes,” he said. His eyes smiled at my surprise and he went on to explain: “Every morning, I go into the garden and watch these plants. I see the play of light and shade on the leaves, and I discover new combinations of colors and fantastic patterns. I study them. They inspire me. Then I go back into the studio and paint.”
This struck me forcefully. Here was perhaps the world’s most celebrated living painter. He was approaching 80, and I would have thought that he had seen every combination of light and shade imaginable. Yet every day he got fresh inspiration from the sunlight on an artichoke; it seemed to charge the delicate dynamo of his genius with an effervescent energy almost inexhaustible.
I wondered what might have happened if Matisse had never taken that morning stroll in the garden. But such a withdrawal is not in his character. Sometimes a man builds a wall around himself, shutting out the light. Not Matisse. He goes out to meet the world, discovers it and seems to soak up the discoveries in his very pores.
In such a process, man inhales the chemicals of inspiration, so to speak. As a musician, inspiration is vital to me, but I find it hard to define what it is. It is more than just drinking in a view or being in love. It is, I think, a sense of discovery, a keen appetite for something new. There goes with it a certain amount of discipline, of control, coupled with a reluctance to accept a rigid, preconceived pattern. Someone has described this whole feeling as a divine discontent.
The source of this capacity for thrilling, explanatory wonder at life rests, I believe, above man himself in something supreme. I sense this in regarding nature, which stimulates me in all my creative work.
There are a host of things about the universe which I do not clearly understand, any more than I can understand, for example, the technicalities of the process by which we can be heard and seen in this new dimension, the miraculous television screen.
Such finite things as these inventions were inconceivable mysteries a few years ago. The reason for life may be obscure to me, but that is no cause to doubt that the reason is there. Like Matisse with his artichoke, I can regard the infinite number of lights and shades of a piece of music and know that this is true.

I believe that the greatest frontier of our ignorance lies in the relationship of man to man. I do not discount the marvelous development in the world of thins, nor do I devaluate the contributions of those who made these developments possible.
Yet all these are but means, and unless we can learn to shape and to control them to ends that are constructive for the inhabitants of the earth, material miracles become not only futile but worse; worse, because they provide more means of destruction.
I believe the frontier of human relationship can be extended. It will not be easy to do so. Man must learn more about himself than he already knows.
The human emotions and the meaning of human behavior present difficulties in measurement much greater than those encountered in learning to measure steel or gold.
Perhaps the greatest impediment to the advancement of knowledge about us has been the fact that we have assumed we know. The man who can predict accurately the smell or color of the vapor which arises when two substances are mixed excites his fellow citizens far more than one who tries to predict the result of the slash of two personalities. In the second phenomenon we tend to solve by one of two methods. We dismiss it as unpredictable prior to the slash, or, afterwards, we declare the result to have been inevitable and expected by everyone. In either case we are denying our ignorance.
We shall have over one of the largest obstacles to a solution of man's favorable relationship whit man when we know and acknowledge how little we know about ourselves. The step to follow our admission of ignorance is to seek the knowledge and understanding that we have concluded we do not have.
This will be a long and difficult road, as long perhaps as from learning how to make fire to learning how to fission the atom. Man must turn his eyes and interest inward.
He has already made more gadgets than he understands or knows how to control. He resembles a child after Christmas unable to manage the the strange and complicated machine toys that had challenged the interest of his parents. Our acceptance that we do not know and must seek to learn cannot wait.

Our tolerating ability is indeed way beyond our imagination. But not until the very critical moment will we realize our potential tolerating ability.
There was a woman in the countryside who got married at the age of 18 and had to escape with her two daughters and a son wherever she could at the age of 26 due to the Japanese army’s invasion. Many people in the village at that time could not bear the suffering of being a fugitive and wanted to commit suicide. After she knew about it, she would come to those people and soothed them by saying, “Don’t do that silly thing. There are no such setbacks that we could not overcome. The Japanese armies are bound to be foiled one day!”
Finally she insisted until the day when all the Japanese armies were kicked out of China. Nonetheless, her son died of disease without sufficient medicine and nutrition in those days of hardships. Her husband, after knowing the death of his son, lay in bed for two days without eating and drinking anything. She teared to her husband and said, “We have a tough destiny, but however tough our lives will be, we should also persist. Though our son has passed away, we can have another. There are no such setbacks that we could not overcome.”
After giving birth to the second son, her husband died of edema, which almost blew her away. But eventually, she recovered and cuddled the three young children, saying, “My sweet hearts, don’t feel scared. You still have me, your dear mum!”
It took her painstaking efforts to raise her children up and the life of her family was getting better and better. Two daughters were married and so was his son finally. She said to everyone she met, “Look! What I said is absolutely right. There are no such setbacks that we could not overcome! My life is so happy now!” She was aging gradually and could not do the farm work any more. So she stayed at home and did some stitching work.
Nevertheless, the Heaven seemed to show no affection to her who had undergone a rough life. She got her leg broken accidentally when she was nursing her grandson. Due to her old age that posed a great risk to her operation, she did not receive operation and had to lie in bed all day long. Her children all cried heavily, while she merely said, “Why do you cry? I am still living.”
Even though she could not rise from bed, she did not complain about anything and anybody. Instead, she sat on the bed and did some stitching work. She had learnt scarves-weaving, broidery, crafts-making, etc. All her neighbors spoke highly of her skills and came to learn from her.
She lived until 86. Before she went to Heaven, she said to her children, “You all should live to your best. There are no such setbacks that we could not overcome!”
We will only get to realize our own iron will and strong tolerating ability after getting stricken heavily. Therefore, no matter what you are suffering from now, do not merely complain about the unfairness of our destiny and maintain low-spirited all the time. There are no such setbacks that we could not overcome. Only those who have no confidence and courage to overcome setbacks will be defeated at last!

The overwhelming majority of people never recognize the difference between wishing and believing. They never take six steps that will help them use their minds to attain their desires. These steps are summarized below, along with my observations, based on a lifetime of study,of the percentage of people who attain each one.
Most people go through life merely wishing for thins. These wishes are as fleeting as the wind. They have no power to shape anyting. The number of people who stop here:70 percent.
A much smaller percentage develop their wihes into desires. They want the same thing constantly, but that is the end of their commitement. They represent 10 percent.
A still smaller percentage develop their wishes and desired into hopes. They dare to imagine, from time to time, that they might get what they seek.I estimate they constitute 8 percent.
An even smaller group translates that hope into belief. They expect what they want will actually happen. These people number 6 percent.
A smaller group of people crystallize their wishes, desires, and hopes into belief, then into a burning desire, and finally into faith. The constitute 4 percent.
Finally,a very few people take the last two steps and then make a plan to get what they want and carry it out. They apply their faith with positive mental attitudes. This group is only 2 percent.
The outstanding leaders in every walk of life are the people in the sixth group. They recognize the power of their own minds;they seize that power and direct it toward what ever they choose. When you take this step, the word"impossible" will have no meaning for you.Everything will be possible for you,and you will manage to get it.

The poor are very wonderful people. One evening we went out and we picked up four people from the street. And one of them was in a most terrible condition, and I told the sisters: You take care of the other three. I take care of this one who looked worse. So I did for her all that my love can do. I put her in bed, and there was such a beautiful smile on her face. She took hold of my hand as she said just the words “thank you” and she died. I could not help but examine my conscience[良心]before her and I asked what would I say if I was in her place. And my answer was very simple. I would have tried to draw a little attention to myself. I would have said I am hungry, that I am dying, I am cold, I am in pain, or something, but she gave me much more-she gave me her grateful love. And she died with a smile on her face. As did that man whom we picked up from the drain[阴沟、下水道], half eaten with worms, and we brought him to the home. “I have lived like an animal in the street, but I am going to die like an angel, loved and cared for.” And it was so wonderful to see the greatness of that man who could speak like that, who could die like that without blaming anybody, without cursing anybody, without comparing anything. Like an angel-this is the greatness of our people. And that is why we believe what Jesus had said: I was hungry, I was naked, I was homeless, I was unwanted, unloved, uncared for, and you did it to me.
I believe that we are not real social workers. We may be doing social work in the eyes of the people, but we are really contemplatives[修行者、沉思冥想的人] in the heart of the world. For we are touching the body of Christ twenty-four hours…And I think that in our family we don’t need bombs and guns, to destroy, to bring peace, just get together, love one another, bring that peace, that joy, that strength of presence of each other in the home. And we will be able to overcome all the evil that is in the world.
And with this prize that I have received as a Prize of Peace, I am going to try to make the home for many people who have no home. Because I believe that love begins at home, and if we can create a home for the poor I think that more and more love will spread. And we will be able through this understanding love to bring peace be the good news to the poor. The poor in our own family first, in our country and in the world. To be able to do this, our Sisters, our lives have to be wove with prayer. They have to be woven with Christ to be able to understand, to be able to share. Because to be woven with Christ is to be able to understand, to be able to share. Because today there is so much suffering…When I pick up a person from the street, hungry, I give him a plate of rice, a piece of bread, I have satisfied. I have removed that hunger. But a person who is shut out, who feels unwanted, unloved, terrified, the person who has been thrown out from society-that poverty is so full of hurt and so unbearable…And so let us always meet each other with a smile, for the smile is the beginning of love, and once we begin to love each other naturally we want to do something.

All over my garden I’ve planted nothing but roses, fragrant and—if looked at from a far—a blaze with color like sunset clouds, I’d be very happy if anyone of my visiting friends should desire to pick and take some for their homes. I trust that any friend of mine carrying the rose would vanish into the distance feeling that his emotions had been rekindled.
A close friend came for a visit the other day. I know her to be a lover of flowers and plants. And for that reason I told her at her departure that she should pick a bunch of roses to grace her boudoir. I promised that the scent of the roses would be wafted far, far away.
That girl friend of mine, tiptoeing into the garden in high spirits, sniffed here and smelt there, but in the end she didn’t pick a single rose. I said there were so many of them that she would pick as many as she’d like to; I told her that I was not a florist and didn’t make a living out of them. Saying so I raised the scissors for the sacrifice of the flowers, but she stopped me, crying no, no, no!
To cut such beautiful roses would hurt one, she said. With her hands clutching at my sleeves, she told me that by no means should they be cut. Roses are the smiling face of the earth, and who could be so iron-hearted as to destroy a smile so intoxicating?
My mind was thoroughly boggled: the ugly earth, the humble earth, the plain earth—it is for the sake of that smile that it wins the care and pity of people.
