“Good morning, sir. My name is…”
“I’m xxx, I’m xxx, and I’m very xxx。”
1.self-disciplined(严格自律的)
2. humble(谦恭的)
3.generous(宽宏大量的)
4. passionate(充满激情的)
5. witty(机智幽默的)
6. empathetic(善于察言观色的)
7. fearless(无所畏惧的)
或许你应该换个词,比如courageous(富有勇气的)。
8. straightforward(直截了当的)
9. adaptable(能够适应)
10. independent(独立性强)

What is Global Warming? Global warming is the unusually rapid increase in Earth’s average surface temperature over the past century primarily due to the greenhouse gases released as people burn fossil fuels. The global average surface temperature rose 0.6 to 0.9 degrees Celsius (1.1 to 1.6° F) between 1906 and 2005, and the rate of temperature increase has nearly doubled in the last 50 years. Temperatures are certain to go up further.
Earth’s natural greenhouse effect Earth’s temperature begins with the Sun. Roughly 30 percent of incoming sunlight is reflected back into space by bright surfaces like clouds and ice. Of the remaining 70 percent, most is absorbed by the land and ocean, and the rest is absorbed by the atmosphere. The absorbed solar energy heats our planet. As the rocks, the air, and the seas warm, they radiate “heat” energy (thermal infrared radiation). From the surface, this energy travels into the atmosphere where much of it is absorbed by water vapor and long-lived greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane. When they absorb the energy radiating from Earth’s surface, microscopic water or greenhouse gas molecules turn into tiny heaters— like the bricks in a fireplace, they radiate heat even after the fire goes out. They radiate in all directions. The energy that radiates back toward Earth heats both the lower atmosphere and the surface, enhancing the heating they get from direct sunlight. This absorption and radiation of heat by the atmosphere—the natural greenhouse effect—is beneficial for life on Earth. If there were no greenhouse effect, the Earth’s average surface temperature would be a very chilly -18°C (0°F) instead of the comfortable 15°C (59°F) that it is today.
The enhanced greenhouse effectWhat has scientists concerned now is that over the past 250 years, humans have been artificially raising the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere at an ever-increasing rate, mostly by burning fossil fuels, but also from cutting down carbon-absorbing forests. Since the Industrial Revolution began in about 1750, carbon dioxide levels have increased nearly 38 percent as of 2009 and methane levels have increased 148 percent.

Knowing that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a hearttrouble, great care was taken to break to her asgently as possible the news of her husband's death.
It was her sister Josephine who told her, in broken sentences, veiled hints that revealed in halfconcealing. Her husband's friend Richards was there, too, near her. It was he who had been inthe newspaper office when intelligence of the railroad disaster was received, with BrentlyMallard's name leading the list of "killed." He had only taken the time to assure himself of itstruth by a second telegram, and had hastened to forestall any less careful, less tender friendin bearing the sad message.
She did not hear the story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability toaccept its significance. She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister's arms. When the storm of grief had spent itself she went away to her room alone. She would have noone follow her.
There stood, facing the open window, a comfortable, roomy armchair. Into this she sank, pressed down by a physical exhaustion that haunted her body and seemed to reach into hersoul.
She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all aquiver withthe new spring life. The delicious breath of rain was in the air. In the street below a peddler wascrying his wares. The notes of a distant song which some one was singing reached her faintly, and countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves.
There were patches of blue sky showing here and there through the clouds that had met andpiled above the other in the west facing her window.
She sat with her head thrown back upon the cushion of the chair, quite motionless, exceptwhen a sob came up into her throat and shook her, as a child who has cried itself to sleepcontinues to sob in its dreams.
She was young, with a fair, calm face, whose lines bespoke repression and even a certainstrength. But now there was a dull stare in her eyes, whose gaze was fixed away off yonder onone of those patches of blue sky. It was not a glance of reflection, but rather indicated asuspension of intelligent thought.
There was something coming to her and she waswaiting for it, fearfully. What was it? She did notknow; it was too subtle and elusive to name. Butshe felt it, creeping out of the sky, reaching towardher through the sounds, the scents, the color thatfilled the air.
Now her bosom rose and fell tumultuously. She wasbeginning to recognize this thing that wasapproaching to possess her, and she was strivingto beat it back with her will-as powerless as her twowhite slender hands would have been.
When she abandoned herself a little whispered word escaped her slightly parted lips. She saidit over and over under her breath: "Free, free, free!" The vacant stare and the look of terrorthat had followed it went from her eyes. They stayed keen and bright. Her pulses beat fast, and the coursing blood warmed and relaxed every inch of her body.
She did not stop to ask if it were or were not a monstrous joy that held her. A clear andexalted perception enabled her to dismiss the suggestion as trivial.
She knew that she would weep again when she saw the kind, tender hands folded in death; theface that had never looked save with love upon her, fixed and gray and dead. But she sawbeyond that bitter moment a long procession of years to come that would belong to herabsolutely. And she opened and spread her arms out to them in welcome.
There would be no one to live for her during those coming years; she would live for herself. There would be no powerful will bending her in that blind persistence with which men andwomen believe they have a right to impose a private will upon a fellow-creature. A kindintention or a cruel intention made the act seem no less a crime as she looked upon it in thatbrief moment of illumination.
And yet she had loved him-sometimes. Often she had not. What did it matter! What could love, the unsolved mystery, count for in face of this possession of self-assertion, which shesuddenly recognized as the strongest impulse of her being!
"Free! Body and soul free!" she kept whispering.
Josephine was kneeling before the closed door with her lips to the keyhole, imploring foradmission. "Louise, open the door! I beg; open the door-you will make yourself ill. What areyou doing, Louise? For heaven's sake open the door."
"Go away. I am not making myself ill." No; she was drinking in a very elixir of life through thatopen window.
Her fancy was running riot along those days ahead of her. Spring days, and summer days, andall sorts of days that would be her own. She breathed a quick prayer that life might be long. Itwas only yesterday she had thought with a shudder that life might be long.
She arose at length and opened the door to her sister's importunities. There was a feverishtriumph in her eyes, and she carried herself unwittingly like a goddess of Victory. She claspedher sister's waist, and together they descended the stairs. Richards stood waiting for them atthe bottom.
Someone was opening the front door with a latchkey. It was Brently Mallard who entered, a littletravel-stained, composedly carrying his gripsack and umbrella. He had been far from the sceneof accident, and did not even know there had been one. He stood amazed at Josephine'spiercing cry; at Richards' quick motion to screen him from the view of his wife.
But Richards was too late.
When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease-of joy that kills.

When we first read the following story, we had justbegun teaching a course called "The Million DollarForum," a course designed to teach people toaccelerate their income up to levels of a milliondollars a year or more. Early on we discovered peopleget locked into a rut of trying harder without tryingsmarter. Trying harder doesn't always work.Sometimes we need to do something radicallydifferent to achieve greater levels of success. Weneed to break out of our paradigm prisons, ourhabit patterns and our comfort zones.
I'm sitting in a quiet room at the Milcroft Inn, a peaceful little place hidden back among thepine trees about an hour out of Toronto. It's just past noon, late July, and I'm listening to thedesperate sounds of a life-or-death struggle going on a few feet away.
There's a small fly burning out the last of its short life's energies in a futile attempt to flythrough the glass of the windowpane. The whining wings tell the poignant story of the fly'sstrategy: Try harder.
But it's not working.
The frenzied effort offers no hope for survival. Ironically, the struggle is part of the trap. It isimpossible for the fly to try hard enough to succeed at breaking through the glass.Nevertheless, this little insect has staked its life on reaching its goal through raw effort anddetermination.
This fly is doomed. It will die there on the windowsill.
Across the room, ten steps away, the door is open. Ten seconds of flying time and this smallcreature could reach the outside world it seeks. With only a fraction of the effort now beingwasted, it could be free of this self-imposed trap. The breakthrough possibility is there. Itwould be so easy.
Why doesn't the fly another approach, something dramatically different? How did it get solocked in on the idea that this particular route and determined effort offer the most promisefor success? What logic is there in continuing until death to seek a breakthrough with more ofthe same?
No doubt this approach makes sense to the fly. Regrettably, it's an idea that will kill.
Trying harder isn't necessarily the solution to achieving more. It may not offer any real promisefor getting what you want out of life. Sometimes, in fact, it's a big part of the problem.
If you stake your hopes for a breakthrough on trying harder than ever, you may kill yourchances for success.
----Price Pritchett

We all, at one time or another, have pretended to be a rock star, singing and dancing along to our favorite song. Most of us have done this inthe privacy of our own room when we were kids and as adults, in the privacy ofour homes. Me? I love to do that when I drive! I turn on the radio, find a songthat I can sing along too and pretty soon my arms are in the air and I ammoving along to the rhythm. Most of the time, I do this on my way to work.
Yes, that is true. I will be in my nice work clothes, jamming whiledriving or stopped at a traffic light. I get weird looks from some people andothers laugh.Personally, I love to get lost in the rhythm of a song which leadsme to share with you the importance of being silly!
The definition for the word silly, according to the dictionary is:stupid, foolish and nonsensical. I know many people do not want to lookfoolish. So they walk around all serious, which in all honesty, is foolish!
No one is perfect, I repeat: no one is perfect. I don't care howeducated, how thin, how beautiful, how simple, how frugal, how rich, and soon... No one is perfect! So why pretend to be something you are not?
Life is so short…You never know when this beautiful journey will beover, so why waste a single second on being so full of rigidity? Here is aquote by Souza, that I think says it all and is a great recipe for life:
"Dance as though no one is watching you,
Love as though you have never been hurt before,
Sing as though no one can hear you,
Live as though heaven is on earth."
When we were kids, we had no idea of what limitations were and we hadno care in the world so we could do things without worrying about how weappeared to others. However, as we grew up, we lost that childlike innocence.
So don't lose the child that still lives within you. The next time youfeel down,go turn on your favorite song, and sing and dance along like there isno tomorrow Or watch something that makes you laugh. Laughter is the bestmedicine to whatever ails you and nothing is better than laughing so hard thatyour tummy hurts. Trust me, you will feet a whole lot better, and who doesn't want to feel good?

So let's talk about happiness, or rather how we can go toward that goal. I think we can all agree that to be happy we should live a positive life. That makes sense. So, how then, can we make sure that we live positively? One way is to surround ourselves with positive things and positive experiences. Read good books, see good movies, have beautiful artwork hanging on our walls. We should eat delicious food, buy ourselves fresh flowers to greet us when we get home and attend all kinds of concerts frequently. . . .
It is important to remember why we are living on this earth. What are our priorities: our family and friends or getting that extra bonus by working 100 hours a week? Which really and truly makes us happier? We only have one life, so let's treat ourselves well, with massages and bubble baths. Never pass a playground without stopping to swing. Throw away our watches and maybe even try living without a planner for a day.
Find the little things, like sunrises and sunsets, or tequila shots and pet rocks, that make a day worth living. And always, always, always have a reason to get out of bed in the morning--whether it's the brownies you baked the night before or the realization that Thursday means "ER" is on at 10:00.
That way of positive living doesn't sound too bad, does it?
But I'd like to introduce another way of living positively. This previous way is inward-looking. The goal is to bring positive or happy things of the world into our lives. A second manner of positive living is more outward-focused. The goal is to direct our own positivity (if I can take the liberty of inventing a word) on the world. To perhaps even seek out the negative things in this world and work to make them positive.
This lifestyle might not appear so much fun, at first. We no longer can claim that it is for "positive" reasons that we don't read the bad news in the newspaper. To the contrary, we must open our eyes and ears to what is happening in all corners of this world that is our global community. Sure it does no good to numb ourselves to all the horrors of the world by repeated contact. But we cannot solve problems without knowing they are there.
In this life, maybe instead of going to a concert, you will perform for others. Maybe instead of buying cut flowers, you will plant flowers in a vacant lot for others to enjoy. Maybe you will teach, heal, counsel, or write policy that changes the world. Building a house with Habitat for Humanity may come before that weekend at the spa. But look at what you've made at the end of a day! When you take responsibility for the world, bubble baths sometimes have to wait.
But once again, I ask you to think about why we are here on earth and what is really important in life. What is the most positive way you can lead your life? As I said before, the key to a positive life is to always, always, and always have a reason to get up in the morning.

Greatness is not this wonderful, esoteric, elusive god-like feature that only the special among us will ever taste. It is something that truly exists in all of us. The way it manifests itself in all of us differs from person to person.
For those of us who are compassionate we sway others to our causes with our empathy.
For those of us who are resourceful we complete our tasks without the resources we need.
For those of us who are creative we find the solutions that no one else can think of.
Creativity, communication, cooperation, decisiveness, leadership, love, passion, we are all born with different attributes that make us great, and it is our duty to discover that greatness. Discovering it is half the battle.
When you do find out what it is that makes you great you will see the world before you and understand what opportunity lies in wait. It was waiting there for you all along, waiting for you to come to the realization that everything you needed to succeed in life was within you all along, and you will want to tell the whole world what you found, you will want to tell people about the greatness inside each of them, but they won’t understand because each person must discover it and declare it on their own.

Starting a new book is a risk, just like falling in love. You have to commit to it. You open the pages knowing a little bit about it maybe, from the back or from a blurb on the front. But who knows, right? Those bits and pieces aren’t always right.
Sometimes people advertise themselves as one thing and then when you get deep into it you realize that they’re something completely different. Either there was some good marketing attached to a terrible book, or the story was only explained in a superficial way and once you reach the middle of the book, you realize there’s so much more to this book than anyone could have ever told you.
You start off slow. The story is beginning to unfold. You’re unsure. It’s a big commitment lugging this tome around. Maybe this book won’t be that great but you’ll feel guilty about putting it down. Maybe it’ll be so awful you’ll keep hate-reading or just set it down immediately and never pick it up again. Or maybe you’ll come back to it some night, drunk or lonely — needing something to fill the time, but it won’t be any better than it was when you first started reading it.
Maybe you’re worn out. You’ve read tons of books before. Some were just light weights on a Kindle or Nook, no big deal really. Others were Infinite Jest-style burdens, heavy on your back or in your purse. Weighing you down all the time. Maybe you’ve taken some time off from reading because the last few books you read just weren’t worth it. Do they even write new, great works of literature anymore? Maybe that time you fell in love with a book before will just never happen for you again. Maybe it’s a once in a lifetime feeling and you’re never gonna find it again.
Or something exciting could happen. Maybe this will become your new favorite book. That’s always a possibility right? That’s the beauty of risk. The reward could actually be worth it. You invest your time and your brain power in the words and what you get back is empathy and a new understanding and pure wonder.
How could someone possibly know you like this? Some stranger, some author, some character. It’s like they’re seeing inside your soul. This book existed inside some book store, on a shelf, maybe handled by other people and really it was just waiting for you to pick it up and crack the spine. It was waiting to speak to you. To say, “You are not alone.”
You just want more of the story. You want to keep reading, maybe everything this author’s ever written. You wish it would never end. The closer it gets to the smaller side of the pages, the slower you read, wanting to savor it all. This book is now one of your favorites forever. You will always wish you could go back to never having read it and pick it up fresh again, but also you know you’re better for having this close, inside you, covering your heart and mind.
Once you get in deep enough, you know you could never put this book down.

My brother-in-law opened the bottom drawer of my sister's bureau and lifted out a tissue-wrapped package. "This," he said, "is not a slip(纸片). This is lingerie(女士内衣)." He discarded the tissue and handed me the slip. It was exquisite(精致的); silk, handmade and trimmed with a cobweb (蜘蛛网,蛛丝)of lace(花边). The price tag with an astronomical figure on it was still attached. "Jan bought this the first time we went to New York, at least 8 or 9 years ago. She never wore it. She was saving it for a special occasion. Well, I guess this is the occasion." He took the slip from me and put it on the bed with the other clothes we were taking to the mortician(殡葬员). His hands lingered on the soft material for a moment, then he slammed the drawer shut and turned to me. "Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Every day you're alive is a special occasion."
I remembered those words through the funeral and the days that followed when I helped him and my niece attend to all the sad chores (琐事)that follow an unexpected death. I thought about them on the plane returning to California from the Midwestern town where my sister's family lives. I thought about all the things that she hadn't seen or heard or done. I thought about the things that she had done without realizing that they were special.
I'm still thinking about his words, and they've changed my life. I'm reading more and dusting less. I'm sitting on the deck and admiring the view without fussing about the weeds in the garden. I'm spending more time with my family and friends and less time in committee meetings. Whenever possible, life should be a pattern of experience to savor(使有风味,尽情享受), not endure. I'm trying to recognize these moments now and cherish them.
I'm not "saving" anything. we use our good china and crystal for every special event-such as losing a pound, getting the sink unstopped, the first camellia (茶花)blossom. I wear my good blazer (颜色鲜明的运动夹克)to the market if I feel like it. My theory is if I look prosperous, I can shell out(交付,支付)$28.49 for one small bag of groceries without wincing(畏缩). I'm not saving my good perfume for special parties; clerks in hardware stores and tellers in banks have noses that function as well as my party-going friends'.
"Someday" and "one of these days" are losing their grip on my vocabulary. If it's worth seeing , hearing or doing, I want to see and hear and do it now. I'm not sure what my sister would have done, had she known that she wouldn't be here for the tomorrow we all take for granted. I think she would have called family members and a few close friends. She might have called a few former friends to apologize and mend fences for past squabbles. I like to think she would have gone out for a Chinese dinner, her favorite food. I'm guessing--I'll never know.
It's those little things left undone that would make me angry ,if I knew that my hours were limited. Angry because I put off seeing good friends whom I was going to get in touch with”someday.” Angry because I hadn't written certain letters that I intended to write--one of these days. Angry and sorry that I didn't tell my husband and daughter often enough how much I truly love them.
I'm trying very hard not to put off, hold back, or save anything that would add laughter and luster to our lives.
And every morning when I open my eyes, I tell myself that it is special. Every day, every minute, every breath truly is ... a gift from God.

Springs are not always the same. In some years, April bursts upon Virginia hills in oneprodigious leap - and all the stage is filled at once, whole choruses of tulips, arabesques offorsythia, cadenzas of flowering plum. The trees grow leaves overnight.
In other years, spring tiptoes in. It pauses, overcome by shyness, like my grandchild at thedoor, peeping in, ducking out of sight, giggling in the hallway. “I know you’re out there,” I cry. “Come in!” And April slips into our arms.
The dogwood bud, pale green, is inlaid with russet markings. Within the perfect cup a score ofclustered seeds are nestled. One examines the bud in awe: Where were those seeds a monthago? The apples display their milliner’s scraps of ivory silk, rose-tinged. All the sleeping thingswake up - primrose, baby iris, blue phlox. The earth warms - you can smell it, feel it,crumble April in your hands.
Look to the rue anemone, if you will, or the pea patch, or to the stubborn weed that thrusts itsshoulders through a city street. This is how it was, is now, and ever shall be, the world withoutend. In the serene certainty of spring recurring, who can fear the distant fall?

All over my garden I’ve planted nothing but roses, fragrant and—if looked at from a far—a blaze with color like sunset clouds, I’d be very happy if anyone of my visiting friends should desire to pick and take some for their homes. I trust that any friend of mine carrying the rose would vanish into the distance feeling that his emotions had been rekindled.
A close friend came for a visit the other day. I know her to be a lover of flowers and plants. And for that reason I told her at her departure that she should pick a bunch of roses to grace her boudoir. I promised that the scent of the roses would be wafted far, far away.
That girl friend of mine, tiptoeing into the garden in high spirits, sniffed here and smelt there, but in the end she didn’t pick a single rose. I said there were so many of them that she would pick as many as she’d like to; I told her that I was not a florist and didn’t make a living out of them. Saying so I raised the scissors for the sacrifice of the flowers, but she stopped me, crying no, no, no!
To cut such beautiful roses would hurt one, she said. With her hands clutching at my sleeves, she told me that by no means should they be cut. Roses are the smiling face of the earth, and who could be so iron-hearted as to destroy a smile so intoxicating?
My mind was thoroughly boggled: the ugly earth, the humble earth, the plain earth—it is for the sake of that smile that it wins the care and pity of people.

Wherever you are, and whoever you may be,
there is one thing in which you and I are
just alike,at this moment, and in all the moments
of our existence.We are not at rest;
we are on a journey. Our life is not a mere fact;
it is a movement, a tendency, a steady,
ceaseless progress towards an unseen goal.
We are gaining something, or losing something, every day.
Even when our position and our character seem to
remain precisely the same, they are changing.
For the mere advance of time is a change.
It is not the same thing to have a bare field
in January and in July. The season makes the difference.
The limitations that are childlike in the child are childish
in the man.Everything that we do is a step
in one direction or another. Even the failure to do something
is in itself a deed. It sets us forward or backward.
The action of the negative pole of a magnetic needle is
just as real as the action of the positive pole.
To decline is to accept — the other alternative.
Are you nearer to your port today than you were yesterday?
Yes, — you must be a little nearer to some port or other;
for since your ship was first launched upon
the sea of life you have never been still
for a single moment; the sea is too deep,
you could not find an anchorage if you would;
there can be no pause until you come into port.
