Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.
I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy---ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of my life for a few hours for this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness---that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I have sought it, finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what---at last---I have found.
With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why the stars shine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.
Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always it brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a hated burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer.
This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.

Their behaviour has not always been particularly regal towards footmen or other dogs.
But at dinner time the Queen’s beloved corgis and dorgis know their place, sitting obediently around Her Majesty as they are served individual menus that they receive in order of seniority.
The carefully tailored menus even include herbal remedies, according to an animal psychologist who worked with the royal pets.
Dr Roger Mugford, who has dealt with doggy discipline problems at Buckingham Palace for more than 20 years, said: ‘At feeding times, each dog had an individually designed menu, including an array of homeopathic and herbal remedies.
‘Their food was served by a butler in an eclectic collection of battered silver and porcelain dishes.
‘As I watched, the Queen got the corgis to sit in a semi-circle around her, and then fed them one by one, in order of seniority. The others just sat and patiently waited their turn.’
Over the years, Her Majesty has had 30 corgis. At one time there were said to be 13, but she is now down to two, Willow and Holly, both 12, and two dorgis, Candy and Vulcan.
It was reported last year that she will not replace them when they die because she does not wish to leave any of her beloved pets behind when she dies.

I was always a little in awe of Great-auntStephina Roos. Indeed, as children we were allfrankly terrified of her. The fact that she did not livewith the family, preferring her tiny cottage andsolitude to the comfortable but rather noisyhousehold where we were brought up-added to therespectful fear in which she was held.
We used to take it in turn to carry small delicacies which my mother had made down fromthe big house to the little cottage where Aunt Stephia and an old colored maid spent their days.Old Tnate Sanna would open the door to the rather frightened little messenger and wouldusher him-or her - into the dark voor-kamer, where the shutters were always closed to keepout the heat and the flies. There we would wait, in trembling but not altogether unpleasant.
She was a tiny little woman to inspire so much veneration. She was always dressed inblack, and her dark clothes melted into the shadows of the voor-kamer and made her looksmaller than ever. But you felt. The moment she entered. That something vital and strong andsomehow indestructible had come in with her, although she moved slowly, and her voice wassweet and soft.
She never embraced us. She would greet us and take out hot little hands in her ownbeautiful cool one, with blue veins standing out on the back of it, as though the white skin werealmost too delicate to contain them.
Tante Sanna would bring in dishes of sweet, sweet, sticky candy, or a great bowl of grapes orpeaches, and Great-aunt Stephina would converse gravely about happenings on the farm, and, more rarely, of the outer world.
When we had finished our sweetmeats or fruit she would accompany us to the stoep, bidding us thank our mother for her gift and sending quaint, old-fashioned messages to herand the Father. Then she would turn and enter the house, closing the door behind, so that itbecame once more a place of mystery.
As I grew older I found, rather to my surprise, that I had become genuinely fond of myaloof old great-aunt. But to this day I do not know what strange impulse made me takeGeorge to see her and to tell her, before I had confided in another living soul, of ourengagement. To my astonishment, she was delighted.
"An Englishman,"she exclaimed."But that is splendid, splendid. And you,"she turned toGeorge,"you are making your home in this country? You do not intend to return to Englandjust yet?"
She seemed relieved when she heard thatGeorge had bought a farm near our own farm andintended to settle in South Africa. She becamequite animated, and chattered away to him.
After that I would often slip away to the little cottageby the mealie lands. Once she was somewhat disappointed on hearing that we had decided towait for two years before getting married, but when she learned that my father and motherwere both pleased with the match she seemed reassured.
Still, she often appeared anxious about my love affair, and would ask questions thatseemed to me strange, almost as though she feared that something would happen to destroymy romance. But I was quite unprepared for her outburst when I mentioned that Georgethought of paying a lightning visit to England before we were married."He must not do it,"shecried."Ina, you must not let him go. Promise me you will prevent him."she was trembling allover. I did what I could to console her, but she looked so tired and pale that I persuaded herto go to her room and rest, promising to return the next day.
When I arrived I found her sitting on the stoep. She looked lonely and pathetic, and for thefirst time I wondered why no man had ever taken her and looked after her and loved her.Mother had told me that Great-aunt Stephina had been lovely as a young girl, and although notrace of that beauty remained, except perhaps in her brown eyes, yet she looked so small andappealing that any man, one felt, would have wanted to protect her.
She paused, as though she did not quite know how to begin.
Then she seemed to give herself, mentally, a little shake. "You must have wondered ", she said, "why I was so upset at the thought of young George's going to England without you. I am anold woman, and perhaps I have the silly fancies of the old, but I should like to tell you my ownlove story, and then you can decide whether it is wise for your man to leave you before you aremarried."
"I was quite a young girl when I first met Richard Weston. He was an Englishman whoboarded with the Van Rensburgs on the next farm, four or five miles from us. Richard was notstrong. He had a weak chest, and the doctors had sent him to South Africa so that the dry aircould cure him. He taught the Van Rensburg children, who were younger than I was, though weoften played together, but he did this for pleasure and not because he needed money.
"We loved one another from the first moment we met, though we did not speak of our loveuntil the evening of my eighteenth birthday. All our friends and relatives had come to my party, and in the evening we danced on the big old carpet which we had laid down in the barn. Richardhad come with the Van Rensburgs, and we danced together as often as we dared, which wasnot very often, for my father hated the Uitlanders. Indeed, for a time he had quarreled withMynheer Van Rensburg for allowing Richard to board with him, but afterwards he got used tothe idea, and was always polite to the Englishman, though he never liked him.
"That was the happiest birthday of my life, for whilewe were resting between dances Richard took meoutside into the cool, moonlit night, and there, underthe stars ,he told me he loved me and asked me tomarry him. Of course I promised I would, for I wastoo happy to think of what my parents would say, orindeed of anything except Richard was not at ourmeeting place as he had arranged. I wasdisappointed but not alarmed, for so many thingscould happen to either of us to prevent out keepingour tryst. I thought that next time we visited theVan Ransburgs, I should hear what had kept him and we could plan further meetings…
"So when my father asked if I would drive with him to Driefontein I was delighted. But whenwe reached the homestead and were sitting on the stoep drinking our coffee, we heard thatRichard had left quite suddenly and had gone back to England. His father had died, and now hewas the heir and must go back to look after his estates.
"I do not remember very much more about that day, except thatthe sun seemed to have stopped shining and the country no longer looked beautiful and full ofpromise, but bleak and desolate as it sometimes does in winter or in times of drought. Latethat afternoon, Jantje, the little Hottentot herd boy, came up to me and handed me a letter ,which he said the English baas had left for me. It was the only love letter I ever received, but itturned all my bitterness and grief into a peacefulness which was the nearest I could get, then, to happiness. I knew Richard still loved me, and somehow, as long as I had his letter, Ifelt that we could never be really parted, even if he were in England and I had to remain on thefarm. I have it yet, and though I am an old, tired woman, it still gives me hope and courage."
I was always a little in awe of Great-aunt Stephina Roos. Indeed, as children we were all franklyterrified of her. The fact that she did not live with the family, preferring her tiny cottage andsolitude to the comfortable but rather noisy household where we were brought up-added tothe respectful fear in which she was held.

"That was the happiest birthday of my life, for while we were restingbetween dances Richard took me outside into the cool, moonlit night, and there, under thestars ,he told me he loved me and asked me to marry him. Of course I promised I would, for Iwas too happy to think of what my parents would say, or indeed of anything except Richardwas not at our meeting place as he had arranged. I was disappointed but not alarmed, for somany things could happen to either of us to prevent out keeping our tryst. I thought that nexttime we visited the Van Ransburgs, I should hear what had kept him and we could plan furthermeetings…
"I do not remember very much more about that day, except that the sun seemed to have stoppedshining and the country no longer looked beautifuland full of promise, but bleak and desolate as itsometimes does in winter or in times of drought.Late that afternoon, Jantje, the little Hottentot herdboy, came up to me and handed me a letter , whichhe said the English baas had left for me. It was theonly love letter I ever received, but it turned all mybitterness and grief into a peacefulness which wasthe nearest I could get, then, to happiness. I knewRichard still loved me, and somehow, as long as I had his letter, I felt that we could never bereally parted, even if he were in England and I had to remain on the farm. I have it yet, andthough I am an old, tired woman, it still gives me hope and courage."
"I must have been a wonderful letter, Aunt Stephia,"I said.
The old lady came back from her dreams of that far-off romance."Perhaps," she said, hesitatinga little, "perhaps, my dear, you would care to read it ?"
"I should love to , Aunt Stephia,"I said gently.
She rose at once and tripped into the house as eagerly as a young girl. When she came backshe handed me a letter, faded and yellow with age, the edges of the envelope worn and frayedas though it had been much handled. But when I came to open it I found that the seal wasunbroken.
"Open it ,open it,"said Great-aunt Stephia, and her voice was shaking.
I broke the seal and read.
It was not a love letter in the true sense of the word, but pages of the minutest directions ofhow"my sweetest Phina"was to elude her father's vigilance, creep down to the drift at nightand there meet Jantje with a horse which would take her to Smitsdorp. There she was to go to"my true friend, Henry Wilson",who would give her money and make arrangements for her tofollow her lover to Cape Town and from there to England ," where, my love, we can he bemarried at once. But if, my dearest, you are not sure that you can face lift with me in a landstrange to you, then do not take this important step, for I love you too much to wish you thesmallest unhappiness. If you do not come, and if I do not hear from you, then I shall know thatyou could never be happy so far from the people and the country which you love. If, however, you feel you can keep your promise to me, but are of too timid and modest a journey toEngland unaccompanied, then write to me, and I will, by some means, return to fetch my bride."
I read no further.
"But Aunt Phina!"I gasped. "Why…why…?"
The old lady was watching me with trembling eagerness, her face flushed and her eyesbright with expectation."Read it aloud, my dear,"she said."I want to hear every word of it.There was never anyone I could trust…Uitlanders were hated in my young days…I could not askanyone."
"But, Auntie, don't you even know what he wrote?"
The old lady looked down, troubled and shy like a child who has unwittingly done wrong.
"No, dear," she said, speaking very low."You see, I never learned to read.

Dear Twentysomething-year-old Me,
1. When that man you have a crush on asks, "Are you a good girl or a bad girl?" laugh in his face, spin on your heel and ignore his calls.
2. Wear sunscreen. At least around your eyes and above your currently pert upper lip's cupid's bow.
3. Just because you share blood with people doesn't mean you have to give them the time of day if they are hell-bent on making you feel small, misunderstood and wrong. You've given them enough chances. Cut the cord.
4. Sign up for small automatic savings deposits that kick in every time you get paid. You'll be making down payments on your own future freedom.
5. Rejection is not a sign that you should stop doing what you love. It is married to doing what you love. It should not be kneecapping you. Embrace it.
6. If you have a problem with a valued friend, bite the bullet and talk about it. Don't just disappear on her or him.
7. Tell the truth. People really do sense it when you lie to them, and it makes them distrust you or themselves. It's the darndest thing.
8. You were raised to think that you should be married well before 30 -- and that everything else you fill your life with adds up to failure if you remain single. That's a giant bucket of steaming dookie. Be choosy. The happiness you're chasing is actually suffusing your life right now. You will look back on this time very wistfully when you've got spit-up in your hair and a husband who expects hot meals, a sparkling-clean house and you to resemble the cutie he married.
9. Reconnect with your gut. I know you were raised to ignore it, and to first please others. Without a connection to your gut, you have no compass. Listen to it. If it squawks, pay attention. The more you listen to it, the more you'll avoid messy/self-destructive detours and align with your own satisfying path.
10. You are so beautiful right now. Your skin is amazing. Your metabolism is forgiving. You have epic amounts of energy and curiosity. Do not look to others to fuel up your self-esteem. You're made of awesome. Own it and others will see it.
11. Go easier on your mother. Every single thing that annoys and disappoints you about her will be something you recognize in yourself as you get older. That's one big bakery full of humble pie you're cooking up right now.
12. Don't be competitive. Be collaborative. There's plenty of room at the table.
13. Your dream life is not something that will appear to you, or not, like an elusive, mythical unicorn. You build your own specifically perfect life every time you listen to your gut, shake off rejection, honor friends, embrace choosiness, feed your savings account and recognize your own arrogance.
Love,

But if one stops to think for a moment, the sink handle must be touched before aperson has a chance to wash his or her hands.
We have shared the joy of dreams fulfilled. We have been moved by tears ofelation and tears of disappointment.
Another idea is that we are moved out of empathy or compassion.

Little Mrs. Sommers one day found herself the unexpected owner of fifteen dollars. It seemed to her a very large amount of money. The way it filled up her worn money holder gave her a feeling of importance that she had not enjoyed for years.
The question of investment was one she considered carefully. For a day or two she walked around in a dreamy state as she thought about her choices. She did not wish to act quickly and do anything she mightregret.
A dollar or two could be added to the price she usually paid for her daughter Janie’s shoes. This would guarantee they would last a great deal longer than usual. She would buy cloth for new shirts for the boys. Her daughter Mag should have another dress. And still there would be enough left for new stockings—two pairs per child. The idea of her little family looking fresh and new for once in their lives made her restless with excitement.
Mrs. Sommers knew the value of finding things for sale at reduced prices. But that day she was tired and a little bit weak. When she arrived at the large department store, she sat in front of an empty counter. She rested her hand upon the counter.
She wore no gloves. She slowly grew aware that her hand had felt something very pleasant to touch. She looked down to see that her hand lay upon a pile of silk stockings. A young girl who stood behind the counter asked her if she wished to examine the silky leg coverings.
She smiled as if she had been asked to inspect diamond jewelry with the aim of purchasing it. But she went on feeling the soft, costly items. Now she used both hands, holding the stockings up to see the light shine through them.
Mrs. Sommers chose a black pair and looked at them closely.
“A dollar and ninety-eight cents,” she said aloud. “Well, I will buy this pair.”
She handed the girl a five dollar bill and waited for her change and the wrapped box with the stockings. What a very small box it was! It seemed lost in her worn, old shopping bag.
Mrs. Sommers then took the elevator which carried her to an upper floor into the ladies’ rest area. In an empty corner, she replaced her cotton stockings for the new silk ones.
For the first time she seemed to be taking a rest from the tiring act of thought. She had let herself be controlled by some machine-like force that directed her actions and freed her of responsibility.
How good was the touch of the silk on her skin! She felt like lying back in the soft chair and enjoying the richness of it. She put her shoes back on and put her old stockings into her bag. Next, she went to the shoe department, sat down and waited to be fitted.
She tried on a pair of new boots.
She held back her skirts and turned her feet one way and her head another way as she looked down at the shiny, pointed boots. Her foot and ankle looked very lovely. She could not believe that the y were a part of herself.
After buying the new boots, she went to the glove department. It was a long time since Mrs. Sommers had been fitted with gloves. When she had bought a pair they were always “bargains,” so cheap that it would have been unreasonable to have expected them to be fitted to her hands.
A young shop girl drew a soft, leather glove over Mrs. Sommers’ hand. She smoothed it down over the wrist and buttoned it neatly. Both women lost themselves for a second or two as they quietly praised the little gloved hand.
She lifted her skirts as she crossed the street. Her new stockings and boots and gloves had worked wonders[产生神奇作用] for her appearance. They had given her a feeling of satisfaction, a sense of belonging to the well-dressed crowds.
She was very hungry. Another time she would have ignored the desire for food until reaching her own home. But the force that was guiding her would not permit her to act on such a thought.
There was a restaurant at the corner. She had noted the white table cloths, shining glasses and waiters serving wealthy people.
When she entered, her appearance created no surprise or concern, as she had half feared it might.
She seated herself at a small table. A waiter came at once to take her order. While waiting to be served she removed her gloves very slowly and set them beside her.
It was all very agreeable. The table cloths were even more clean and white than they had seemed through the window. And the crystal drinking glasses shined even more brightly. There were ladies and gentlemen, who did not notice her, lunching at the small tables like her own.
A pleasing piece of music could be heard, and a gentle wind was blowing through the window. She tasted a bite, and she slowly drank the wine. She moved her toes around in the silk stockings. The price of it all made no difference.
When she was finished, she counted the money out to the waiter and left an extra coin on his tray[托盘]. He bowed to her as if she were a princess of royal blood.
It was like a dream ended. Mrs. Sommers went to wait for the cable car.
A man with sharp eyes sat opposite her. It was hard for him to fully understand what he saw in her expression. In truth, he saw nothing—unless he was a magician. Then he would sense her heartbreakingwish that the cable car would never stop anywhere, but go on and on with her forever.

Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search of knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.
I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy - ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of my life for a few hours of this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness -that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable abyss. I have sought it, finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what-at last-I have found.
With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why the stars shine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway the flux. A little of this, but most of much, I have achieved.
Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth.

The Problem With Delhi's Rich Kids
A woman I went to college with in New Delhi, now 29, lives in her family home on Prithviraj Road, one of the toniest parts of the capital. She has a shiny new convertible BMW 3 series, bought by her father. She doesn't have a job.
She called me recently and we met for lunch. She looked dull and withdrawn. She told me she was extremely depressed and felt that her life wasn't worth living. She isn't the only Delhi rich kid to feel this way.
Sanjay Chugh, a Delhi-based psychiatrist, says he treats three or four young, wealthy, unhappy patients a day. 'Such children are often brought up being told that they have nothing to worry about and that money can take care of everything,' he said.
Often, newly wealthy parents don't want their children to go through the hardships they experienced growing up, Mr. Chugh says. But they fail to teach them there is more to life than fancy drinks, new toys and branded clothes.
On a recent evening at a posh lounge in Delhi, I saw Prada and Gucci-clad teenagers arrive in Lamborghinis, Jaguars and Porsches. They air kissed and went to the bar. 'Hedonism is back,' a note on bar's website says.
After an hour or so of drinking, a chubby guy in the group got the bill. 'Oh, just 60? Not bad,' he said loudly. It was 60,000 rupees ($1,000.)
An acquaintance in Delhi says she spends most afternoons in her apartment, sitting on the couch drinking beer and smoking marijuana.
'I always got what I wanted, and that's just how it works and always will,' the 30-year-old said. When she was 13, she asked her parents for a top of the range laptop, and she got it. 'Apart from this, you are not getting anything this year, except that holiday in Cairo,' she quotes her parents as saying.
Mr. Chugh says many young patients are in denial of their depression.
He says situations and symptoms often include a need for instant gratification, an abundance of money, feelings of emptiness and lack of purpose, minimal parental supervision, and alcohol and drug addiction.
'They never learnt how to be responsible for themselves and those around them, and they keep moving from one thing, place, or person to another in pursuit of happiness,' he said.
Samir Modi, managing director of Modi Enterprises and father of two teenage girls, believes there are two different approaches to raising children. 'You either spoil them or you make them realize the value of money,' he said.
His daughters have some luxuries, he said, but they get a set allowance each month. 'They have to manage within it, no matter what,' he said. If you give children all the money they want, they won't have a reason to work for it in the future, he added.
'It is our job as parents to lead by example and set clear objectives and boundaries for our children,' he said.
Radhika Borde, a social scientist who spent her formative years in New Delhi, comes from a privileged background and her grandmother left her a handsome inheritance when she died.
'I lived in Delhi during the period of my undergraduate education and had the typically glamorous lifestyle of people my age,' she said in a recent interview. 'Very soon however, I started to find it quite boring.'
'The India of dirt, danger and determination that I saw as a child was far more interesting,' she said, referring to her childhood in Jharkhand. 'This was the India of villages, village politics, poverty, many smiles, laughter and strong social ties,' she said.
Ms. Borde left New Delhi. She divides her time between the Netherlands, where she is getting a PhD in environmental science, and rural Jharkhand.
Mr. Modi's children and Ms. Borde appear to be in a minority.
'Unfortunately, this problem is increasing day by day and it will be more serious in the future,' said G. Satyanarayana, a sociology professor at Osmania University in Hyderabad. '[Parents] have no time to spend with children and inculcate essential values needed for a rooted, balanced and healthy life.'
'Modern society is rational and rigid, whereas postmodern society is irrational and flexible by definition. Delhi transformed into a postmodern society about two decades ago. Naturally the behavior of kids born in the postmodern era reflects the postmodern culture,' he added.
I met my college friend at her mansion again. She sipped her tea, munched on cookies and stared blankly at a huge rock on her finger. She said she had just got engaged to an investment banker and will have a beautiful house on Baker Street in London. Apart from that, she barely spoke to me.

Dearest, canst thou tell me why
The rose should be so pale?
And why the Azure violet
Should wither in the vale?
And why the lark should in the cloud
So sorrowfully sing?
And why from loveliest balsam-buds
A scent of deach should spring?
And why the sun upon the mead
So chillingly should frown?
And why the earth should, like a grave,
Be moldering and brown?
And why it is that I myself
So languishing should be?
And why it is, my heart of hearts,
That thou forskest me?

Good afternoon, Mr. Shaw! It's such a lovely day, isn't it?
Oh, yes.But twenty people have told me about it in past two hours. Thank you.(是啊,但是两个小时里已经有20多个人跟我这么说了啊!)
