Q: What facts about the United States do foreigners not believe until they come to America?

Everyone is highly private about their accomplishments and failures. Someone's performance in any field is their performance alone. This is different compared to India where people flaunt their riches and share their accomplishments with everybody else.

Rich people are thin/ well maintained, poor people are fat. This stems from the fact that cheap food is fatty, rich people don't eat cheap food — they tend to eat either home-cooked food which is expensive or eat at expensive / healthy places. Unfortunately, it is expensive to be healthy in America.
Fat people are not respected much in society. Being fat often has the sameconnotations as being irresponsible towards your body. If you're thin (and tall, but not as much), people will respect you a lot more and treat you better. You will also receive better customer service if you're well maintained. This extends my previous point which mentioned that if you're thin, you're statistically likely to be rich. Reason why I know this is that I went down from being 210lbs to 148-150lbs. The way people started treating me when I was thin was generally way better than the way I was treated when I was fat. As a small example, the Starbucks baristas were much nicer to me and made me drinks with more care.
Almost every single person in America has access to basic food, clothing, water and sanitation. I haven't been to states like Louisiana and cities like Detroit, but from what I can tell, nobody is scrambling for the basic necessities required for sustenance.
Americans waste a lot of food. It is very easy to buy in bulk because it's so much cheaper and as a result a lot of wastage occurs.
Obsession with coffee — Starbucks, Dunkin' etc is crowded with office-goers and students every morning. I don't understand why they can't drink or make coffee before leaving for work. Such a waste of money! ($5/day * 5days / week * 52weeks/year)!
Support towards the LGBT community — it's fairly normal to be part of the LGBT community; it's not considered a mortal sin if you like someone in your own gender or if you aren't comfortable being male/female/etc. Proof of this is the LGBT Pride Day held in every city.

What do foreigners find most annoying about Americans?
Erin Paige Law
As an Australian who has travelled quite a bit and been part of many different expatcommunities, I find that Americans more than people from other countries do this one particular thing that annoys me.
When I am speaking, really about anything, just in general conversation, I hate being interrupted so that someone can impersonate my accent to me.
This is how it goes:
Me: "...so then I'd probably add just a little butter..."
American: "Buttah! Buttah...you say Buttah. Australian accents are so funny!"
Me: "Uh yeah, so as I was saying..."
So I have a different accent. I get that. But people not from Australia have a very different accent from me. I don't stop them midway through a conversation to repeat back to them what they said because, well, it's just rude.

Disclaimer: I love the U S of A. I spent some of the best years of my life there. I love most Americans that I have met (except for the jackasses).
So...this is not exactly an annoyance. But one thing I notice about some (many?) Americans that I don't see that much elsewhere is, they are eating or drinking something all the time. Like, if they go to the movies they're munching on a huge bucket of popcorn or sipping on a bucket of soda through the entire movie. If they're walking down the street they have a Starbucks latte or a Snapple bottle or something in one hand and a phone in the other. Or they are chewing gum. They eat in the car all the time too. The excuse I've heard for this is it's because Americans are so busy all the time that they have to eat on the run anywhere they can. But still...aren't people in other countries busy too? It's a bit of a puzzle.

I get worried about Americans' response if I criticize something about the US. Europeans and Asians are used to criticism from outsiders more due to multicultural geography and not take that criticism as hate. Every now and then, when I criticize something about the US online, even when I'm very careful with my words to not offend anyone, I still receive some responses like, "First look at your own country!", "You're not from here, you have no right to say anything." "Foreigners hate America."

Americans have a lot of behaviors that while not being actually bad things, seem rude to foreigners.
Americans are loud.
It seems to be the norm here in the US, so you don't notice it a lot, but in other countries where people speak "normally", it sounds very rude/uneducated.
Especially in restaurants, where all the locals speak softly and politely to each other, and a group of people is like "OH MY GAWD, THIS FOOD IS SO GOOD, BWAHAHAHA, THAT'S THE SH*T DUDE!"
Everyone else in the restaurant is immediately thinking "Rude Americans".

“Drinking culture is huge here,” according to an unnamed student in the Princeton Review’s 2016edition of the “The Best 380 Colleges.” The university has about 31,000 undergraduate students.
University spokeswoman Robin Kaler was bothered by the No. 1 ranking — a first for the campus, which has been among the list’s top five for years — and said it painted students in a false light.
“They are serious, they are hard-working, and to try to present them as being somehowirresponsible is insulting,” she said Monday.
The largest of the parties is an annual day of drinking called Unofficial, a St. Patrick’s Daycelebration that was started by a local bar. The event included fatal accidents in 2001 and 2006.The university tries every year to keep the event under control, often beefing up police presenceand, two years ago, even asking parents to help them tone down the partying.
The Princeton Review’s publisher says the collection of lists is meant to paint a picture of life oncampus at the schools it reviews, using students’ answers to a long series of questions aboutstudent life to create profiles, as well as lists for things such as partying, dorm life, sports, politicalpersuasions and more.
“We have such a high regard for each of the 380 schools,” said publisher Robert Franek, whosereview is not affiliated with Princeton University. “The University of Illinois, it is an exceptionalschool.”

For those who don’t imbibe, the top stone-cold sober school is Brigham Young University(BYU), the private Utah school affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.Tops for most religious students? That’s BYU, too.
(Churchof Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)。

It is widely noted that lots of traditional culture is disappearing along with the development of technology. Many ancient architectures and traditional ways of living have been deserted. It seems that the traditional culture and craftsmanship will be replaced in this modern era.
The following reasons can account for the above phenomenon. Firstly, traditional technologies are always considered ineffective while the new sciences are always highly efficient, because modern science and technology facilitate both our daily and academic life a lot, with which we can save much money and time. Secondly, it is costly to protect the traditional culture, especially the maintenance and repair of the historical buildings.
In my opinion, although traditional culture is an ancient heritage, it couldn't keep pace with the development of society. It is the tide of history that the traditional culture and technology will no doubt be eliminated in the end.

the golden gate bridge is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world.
even people who hate the usa love san francisco. it has an atmosphere of genteel (彬彬有礼的;有教养的)chic(高尚、别致) mixed with offbeat(不跟随时尚主流的;非传统的;特异的)innovation, and a selfeffacing(自我谦逊的)quality so blatantly missing from new york and la.
one of the usa's most attractive cities, san francisco's hilly streets provide some gorgeous glimpses of the san francisco bay and its famous bridges. this is a mosaic(马赛克式的东西)of a city, a big picture made from the colorful tiles of bustling chinatown, gay castro (旧金山一著名同性恋社区)and faux-hemian(法语词,故意表现得质朴童稚的)north beach.
san francisco covers the tip of a 30mi (50km) peninsula (半岛) in northern california, with the pacific ocean on its western side and the san francisco bay to the north and east. san francisco is just one of many cities in the bay area; others include oakland (east across the bay bridge), berkeley (just north of oakland) and san jose (an hour's drive southeast of san francisco, near the southern tip of the bay)。 marin county and the wine country lie to the north, across the golden gate bridge.
a newly restored street car on market street
the most touristed part of the city resembles a slice of pie, with van ness ave and market st making the two sides and the embarcadero the round edge of the pie. the steaming toppings of this homebaked slice are the classy shops around union square, the highrise financial district, the classy civic center, the down-and-out but up-and-coming tenderloin, swanky(华丽的) nob hill and russian hill, chinatown, north beach and the epicenter of tourist kitsch, fisherman's wharf(渔人码头)。 to the south of market st lies soma, an upwardly mobile warehouse zone of clubs and bars that fades in the southwest into the mission - the city's latino quarter - and then the castro, the center of gay life.
making a circuit of the 49-mile drive is a good way to check out almost all of the city's highlights(最有意思或精彩的部分)。 the route is well posted with instantly recognizable seagull signs, but a map and an alert navigator are essential. do yourself a favor and allow a whole day to complete the circuit.
greyhound is the only regular long-distance bus company operating to the city - all bus services arrive and depart at the transbay terminal in soma. amtrak's rail network connects the bay area with the rest of the continental us and canada. its main stations are in oakland and emeryville, both in the east bay. caltrain links san francisco with the peninsula and san jose; its depot is in soma.

it used to be called ‘god's waiting room'. and even today, if you mention miami to someone who hasn't been here or read about it lately, they might conjure up(回忆)a blurry memory of octogenarians(八十多岁)mingling poolside(游泳池边)while aunt sadie implored them to wait half an hour after eating before going into the water. today the old folks mingle with fashion designers, bikini(比基尼泳装)models, and a city that once had the highest murder rate in the us attracts more than 11 million tourists a year.
the greater miami area, which includes miami and miami beach as well as distinctive neighborhoods like little havana and little haiti, is a melting pot that america's founding fathers would be proud of. half of miami's population is hispanic(美籍西班牙人), and its immigrant communities focus on what's happening in havana or caracas(加拉加斯,委内瑞拉首都)as much as they follow events in washington dc, giving the city an international outlook. for the casual visitor this means a city peppered with the flavors of latin american food, language, music, politics and spirit.
miami is the most populated city in florida. it sits at the southeastern tip of the florida, the most southeastern state of the united states, bordered by the atlantic ocean to the east, the gulf of mexico to the west and the neighboring states of alabama and georgia to the north.
most visitors aren't here for miami itself, but rather to visit miami beach, an entirely separate municipality. miami is on the mainland, while the city of miami beach is on a thin barrier island about 4 miles east, across biscayne bay(比斯坎湾) - locals call it the billion dollar sandbar(十亿美元的沙坝)。 many of the beach's locals are imports from new york, people tired of sitting through five hours of snarled traffic on their way to the hamptons, who decided that miami beach made a lot more sense. they brought with them a fledgling art and culture crowd whose numbers included many younger artists.
the boundaries of ‘season' in miami - which used to be limited to winter - have been blurred by the huge number of people moving to the area and the stampede(蜂拥)of fashion and film shoots. but the most popular time to come here is still between december and may, when temperatures average between 16-30°c, and average rainfall is a scant couple of inches.
