He was driving home one evening, on a two-lane country road. Work, in this small, mid-western community, was almost as slow as his beat-up Pontiac. But he never quit looking. Ever since the Levis factory closed, he'd been unemployed, and with winter raging on, the chill had finally hit home.

Today I was at the shopping mall and I spent a lot of time reading the Father’s Day cards. They all had a special message that in some way or another reflected how I feel about you. You’ll soon be 84 years old, Dad, and you and I will have had 55 Father’s Days together. I haven’t always been with you on Father’s Day nor have I been with you for all of your birthdays. It wasn’t because I didn’t want to be with you. I’ve always been with you in my heart but sometimes life gets in the way.

You know, Dad, there was a time when we were not only separated by the generation gap but completely polarized by it. You stood on one side of the Great Divide and I on the other, father and daughter split apart by age and experience, opinions, hairstyles, cosmetics, clothing, curfews, music, and boys.

The Father-Daughter Duel of ’54 shifted into high gear when you taught me to drive the old Dodge and I decided I would drive the ‘54 Chevy whether you liked it or not. The police officer who escorted me home after you reported the Chevy stolen late one evening was too young to understand father-daughter politics and too old to have much tolerance for a snotty 16 year old. You were so decent about it, Dad, and I think that was probably what made it the worst night of my life.

Our relationship improved immensely when I married a man you liked, and things really turned around when we begin making babies right and left. We didn’t have a television set, you know, and we had to entertain ourselves somehow. I didn’t know what to expect of you and Mom as grandparents but I didn’t have to wait long to find out. Those babies adored you then just as they adore you now. When I see you with all your grandchildren, I know you’ve given them the finest gift a grandparent can give. You’ve given them yourself.

Somewhere along the line, the generation gap evaporated. Age separates us now and little else. We agree on most everything, perhaps because we’ve learned there isn’t much worth disagreeing about. However, I would like to mention that fly fishing isn’t all you’ve cracked it up to be, Dad. You can say what you want about wrist action and stance and blah, blah, blah

I’ve been happily drifting for a lot of years, Dad, and I didn’t see you getting older.

I suppose I saw us and our relationship as aging together, rather like a fine wine. Numbers never seemed important. But the oddest thing happened last week. I was at a stop sign and I watched as you turned the corner in your car. It didn’t immediately occur to me that it was you because the man driving looked so elderly and fragile behind the wheel of that huge car. It was rather like a slap in the face delivered from out of nowhere. Perhaps I saw your age for the first time that day. Or maybe I saw my own.

Fifty years ago this spring we planted kohlrabi together in a garden in Charles City, Iowa.

I didn’t know then that I would remember that day for the rest of my life. This week, we’ll plant kohlrabi together again, perhaps for the last time but I hope not. I don’t understand why planting kohlrabi with you is so important to me but it is. And the funny thing about it is, well, I don’t know quite how to tell you this, DadI don’t even like kohlrabibut I like planting it with you.

I guess what I’m trying to say, Dad, is what every son and daughter wants to say to their Dad today. Honoring a Father on Father’s Day is about more than a Dad who brings home a paycheck, shares a dinner table, and attends school functions, graduations, and weddings. It isn’t even so much about kohlrabi, ’54 Chevrolets, and fly-fishing. It’s more about unconditionally loving children who are snotty and stubborn, who know everything and won’t listen to anyone. It’s about respect and sharing and acceptance and tolerance and giving and taking. It’s about loving someone more than words can say，and it’s wishing that it never had to end.

Often we're told that we have to suffer now — give up what we want — in order to succeed later, that in order to save we must sacrifice. Give up instant gratification to get delayed gratification.

But you can do both.

For years, I was confused about this, as I read books and websites that sent me two different messages:

Pleasure later. The first message was that in order to be successful, in order to build wealth, you have to delay gratification. You can't have instant gratification and be successful.

Pleasure now. The second message was usually from other sources on Happiness, but sometimes from the same source: enjoy life now, while you can, because it's short and you never know when your last day will come. Live every day like it's your last. Trouble is, I agree with both messages. And if you read this site often, you’ll see that I send both messages: Live frugally and simply! But also enjoy life!

That's because I've reconciled the two philosophies into one: Live life now and enjoy it to the fullest — without destroying your future. The key to doing that? Find ways to enjoy life completely, utterly, maximally … that don’t cost your future very much.

Here are some tips for actually living that philosophy:

Find free or cheap pleasures. Frugality does not have to be boring or restrictive … if you use your imagination. Be creative and find ways to have fun — loads of it — without spending much money. Have a picnic at the park, go to the beach, do crafts, board games, fly a kite, make art, bake cookies … I could list a hundred things, and you could come up with a few hundred more. Make a list of simple pleasures, and enjoy them to the maximum. This is the key to the whole idea of enjoying life now without spending tomorrow's dollar. See Savor the Little Things .

Make simplifying fun. I'm a big fan of simplifying my life, from decluttering to creating a simple lifestyle in every way. And to me, this is great fun. I get rid of stuff (and possibly make money selling it) and have a blast doing it. That’s good math.

Rediscover what’s important. Oftentimes we spend tons of money, shopping, going out, watching movies, eating out … without really enjoying life. And when we stop to think about it, we never have time for the things we really want to do. Well, that's probably because your life is filled with things that aren't very important to you. Instead, step back and really think about what’s important to you. Then get rid of the other (expensive) stuff, and focus on what's important. Listen to some stuff on my list: my wife and kids, other friends and family, reading, writing, exercising, volunteering, spending quiet time in contemplation. Make people a priority. This is related to the above point, but I thought I'd give it a little more emphasis. If you give "stuff" a priority — stuff like gadgets, nice furnishings, nice clothes, shoes, jewelry, etc. — then you will spend a lot of money. But if you make people a priority — the people you love most, you close friends and family — you don't need to spend a dime to enjoy life. Make some time to visit with friends, or your parents … and have a conversation with them that doesn't involve eating out or going to the movies. Just sit, have some iced tea or hot cocoa (depending on the weather), and talk. Tell jokes and laugh your heads off. Talk about books you've read, movies you’ve watched, new things going on in your life, your hopes and dreams. And make time for your kids or your significant other — really spend time with them, doing things that don't cost money. Find time for yourself. Make time every day, and every week, to spend time alone. It really gives more meaning and enjoyment to your life, rather than rushing through life with no time to think, to breathe. For ideas on how to make this time, see these ways to create time for solitude .

Sometimes, splurge. You shouldn't restrict yourself from expensive pleasures all the time — it's not good to develop the feeling of deprivation. To prevent that, once in awhile, buy yourself something … or better yet, give yourself a decadent treat. I love things with dark chocolate or berries. Crepes with ice cream and berries are one of my favorites. Just don't go overboard … and learn to enjoy the splurge to the fullest. If you truly take the time to enjoy a treat, you don't need a lot of it.

Track your successes. It doesn't really matter how you track your success … you can use gold stars for creating a new simplifying or frugalfying habit, or a spreadsheet chart to track your decreasing debt and increasing savings or investments. Tracking is a great way to not only provide motivation, but make the process of changing fun.

Reward yourself. And in order to make it more fun, celebrate every little success! Set rewards for yourself (hopefully not too expensive!) along your path to success — celebrate one day, two days, three days, a week, two weeks, three, a month … you get the idea.

Volunteer. One of the most rewarding things for my family has been when we have managed to volunteer. It's actually something we only started doing last year, but since then, we've done it a bunch of times in a number of different ways. And while it doesn't cost a dime, it is tremendously satisfying in ways that money could never buy. Read more .

Live in the moment. Learn to think not so much about the past or future, but about what you are going through right now. Be present. It may seem trite, but it's the key to enjoying life to the fullest — without having to spend money. Think about it — you can spend money on eating out, but if you are not really thinking about what you're eating, you may not enjoy it much at all. But if you cook a simple but delicious meal, and really taste every bite, it can be tremendously enjoyable without costing a lot. Read more .

Slow down. In the same way, you can't really enjoy life to the fullest if it's rushing past you like it's on fast forward. Ever think about how quickly a week, a month, or a year goes by? Perhaps you're in the fast lane too much. Try slowing down, and things will be less stressful and more enjoyable. Drive slower , eat slower , live slower .

this vast region, which harbors some of the most exotic life forms on the planet, has been long neglected, but that's changing.

scientists are turning to high technology to probe the mysterious land beneath the seas, and within a few years the textbooks will have to be rewritten. we'll see critters that we've never seen before and learn more about the dynamic forces that drive the planet.

wiring an entire tectonic plate

many projects that are now in advanced planning stages couldn't have been done just a few years ago. consider this:

scientists from a wide range of research institutions are planning to "wire" an entire tectonic plate off the coast of the pacific northwest and british columbia. the juan de fuca plate is smaller than most tectonic plates, the huge chunks of the earth's crust that move slowly about the planet. but its subduction under the north american continental plate causes earthquakes and volcanoes along much of the pacific northwest.

an undersea robot that operates somewhat like the lunar lander that carried astronauts to the surface of the moon is being used to study the impact of oil drilling operations on the floor of the gulf of mexico.

the u.s. coast guard's newest icebreaker is on its maiden voyage, and its first challenge is a dandy. the 420-foot healy will follow the famed northwest passage through the arctic ocean while attempting to collect rock samples from the ocean floor.

these and other research projects, including the 10-year, $1 billion international effort to inventory the critters that live in the world's oceans, called the census of marine life, and the effort to study the entire mid-atlantic ridge, an underwater mountain range where new crust is being formed, are ambitious projects that will take years to complete.

indeed, the scientists behind the plans to study the juan de fuca plate believe the sophisticated network of sensors and fiber optic cables they will be laying off the pacific northwest will still be in use 30 or 40 years from now. project neptune is expected to cost about $200 million.

determing how organisms survive

about 2,000 miles of fiber optic cables will be strung across the 80,000-square-mile juan de fuca plate, according to john delaney, a university of washington oceanographer who heads a consortium of neptune participants from the university, monterey bay research institute, nasa's jet propulsion lab, canada's institute for pacific ocean science and technology, and woods hole oceanographic institution.

the cables will provide electric power and communications to sensors spread all over the plate, which is bigger than the state of washington, as well as about 70,000 square miles of ocean bottom surrounding the plate. tiny subs will zip back and forth between about 30 sites more than a mile under the surface where experiments can be conducted.

the experiments will seek to determine how some organisms survive without sunlight under intense pressures, and even in environments that would poison nearly all other forms of life. this part of the project got a boost recently with a $5 million grant from the w.m. keck foundation of los angeles.

project neptune will allow scientists to study the dynamic processes that drive plate tectonics, and the rest of us have been invited along for the ride. the data, including images, will be available to anyone via the internet once the project is operational in four or five years.

delaney says he wants it to be like a public "oceanarium."

"oceans are the most fascinating feature of our solar system," he says. "we want everyone with a home computer to be able to access what we're studying and eventually involve schoolchildren in our robotic operations, allowing them to experience firsthand the mysteries of the deep."

texans discovering what drilling is doing

meanwhile, deep in the heart of texas, scientists want to know more than just what the ocean is like. they want to know what we're doing to it.

so a consortium of universities, led by texas a&m, is using a 10-foot-tall, 1-ton robotic device to study the deeper regions of the gulf of mexico before oil drilling begins there.

"oil companies have been drilling on the continental shelf of the gulf for the past 50 years," says gilbert t. rowe, a texas a&m oceanography professor and head of the project. but technology now makes it possible to drill in deeper water and there is great concern over the environmental impact of exploration and production at greater depths, he says.

the scientists will use the "lander," which is naturally buoyant and drops weights to descend to the ocean bottom, to study marine life and its environment at depths of up to 9,000 feet.

"there are a lot of bizarre fauna down there," rowe says. "for example, there are creatures that act like buzzards, cleaning up the ecosystem. one question is how they find dead carcasses in such a clean, dark, cold, featureless landscape."

spreading censors explored

at the other end of north america, the spanking new coast guard icebreaker will have one primary target on its list. scientists aboard the healy will study the gakkel ridge, more than 3 miles below the surface. the gakkel ridge is one of many "spreading centers" around the world where chunks of the seafloor are spreading apart, allowing new ocean bottom to form as magma flows up through the ridge.

but what makes the gakkel ridge so fascinating to scientists is it spreads at about a twentieth of the pace of other spreading centers. and unlike other ridges, which bubble with heat as molten rock spews onto the ocean floor, gakkel is sort of like a "big crack in the earth," according to henry dick of the woods hole oceanographic institution, who first came up with the idea of studying the ridge 15 years ago.

that means there may be all sorts of life down there that is very different from life near other spreading centers.

the healy will be working jointly with a german icebreaker polarstern, and the ships will work in tandem along 500 miles of the ridge. first the ships will have to break the ice, then they will drop a rather crude-looking device dubbed unofficially as a "bed of nails." the device will be attached to a long cable, so it can be hauled back up with, researchers hope, chunks of rock from the ridge attached.

and when it's all over, the mysteries of the deep should be a little less mysterious.
