Not much is known about the earliest London Bridge although it's location is thought to be near the present one. The second bridge a wooden one existing in Saxon times seems to have given rise to the nursery rhyme 'London Bridge is falling down' which it did in 1014. In 1176 the first stone bridge was constructed. Houses sprung up on both sides of the bridge and stood until it was pulled down in 1831, making way for a more elegant, classic structure. This bridge was replaced in 1967 as it could no longer cope with the amount of traffic. The present London Bridge is more 100 feet wide.

The London Bridge preceding the current one was bought by the McCulloch Oil Corporation of California, which reconstructed it at Lake Havasu City, in a corner of America's Arizona Desert. Rumour has it that McCulloch's thought they were buying the much more spectacular Tower Bridge.
The Construction of Tower Bridge began in 1885 and it was opened 9yrs later by Edward VII the then Prince of Wales, Amidst pomp and ceremony. It is the only bridge in London that can be raised to allow ships to pass. Since the Thames is no longer used much as a trade and shipping route, the complex lifting mechanism is only used 4 or 5 times a week. The Tower bridge is often mistaken for London Bridge which is dull in comparison.

A Visit to Hangzhou
It was my first visit to Hangzhou. In one and a half days, I hurried through more than ten scenic spots. The West Lake in spring is gracefully pleasant, its beauty unparquduwend. Walking along the lake, I saw willows bowing in shiness. The water is so blue. The pavilions throw their shadows in the water. What is most impressive is the blooming peach flowers vying with each other in showing their beauty. The tea bushes, the screens and quiet bamboos are left in my memory.
When I walked for half an hour in the sun and suddenly saw a stretch of bamboos I could not help crying out, "I'll go and sit in there." After three hours' walk a murmuring stream came into my view. The water was clear and I could see through it to the bottom. The oval stones under the water were visible and even countable. I put my aching feet into the stream. Oh, the water was running across my feet. It was cool but not cold. I could not but admit that it was a most pleasant and comfortable moment.
Life is just like a journey. What is more, you have to hurry on the way, braving the scorching sun and burdened with luggage, while crossing over the mountains and slopes. Then you feel rewarded by a short rest. If only I could walk less and rest more!

Jiuzhaigou, China's Fairyland
Sichuan Province in southwest China is renowned for its many fascinatingnatural wonders which have attraaed millions of travelers over the centuries.
The recent discovery of the scenic beauty of Jiuzhaigou (Nine-village Ravine)has added charm to the picturesque landscape. Known as "China's Fairyland", Jiuzhaigou is located in the hills along the borders of Nanping,Pingwu and Songpan counties, some 400 kilometers from Chengdu, the pro-vinaal capital. Three scenic areas-Shuzheng qunhaigou, Zechawagou and Rizegou-combine to make up the 60,000 hectares of fairyland, which is nearly 2,500 meters above sea level. Its name "Nine-village Ravine"is sup-posed to be because Tibetans once inhabited nine villages in the ravine.
Here is a brief record in "Green Lakes", a chapter in the Annals ofNanpingCounty: "In Jiuzhaigou, lakes meander for miles, with wooded hills mir-rored in the clear water." The scene, actually, is much more beautiffil than can be put into words. Sichuan Prorrince is rich in scenic wonders, each with its own distinctive features—the elegance of Mount Emei, the serenity ofMount Qingcheng, the sharp precipice of Jianmen Pass, and the grandeur of Kuimen. But to depict the diverse natural beauty of Jiuzhaigou in one or two words is not nearly enough. "Fairyland",however inadequate, is perhaps the only word to choose.
Intrigued by this fairyland, true lovers of nature have tried recording its uniquebeauty in poems, paintings, photographs and travel notes. An old local Tibetan tells the story of Jiuzhaigou: "Once upon a time, there lived deep in the mountains an immortal named Dage and a fairy maiden named Wonuosemo. They fell in love. One day, Dage presented Wonuosemo with a bright mirror which he had polished with the wind and the clouds. Unfortunately, the mirror slipped from the maiden's hand and broke into 108 pieces, each turning into a lake of emerald green."It is no wonder why scenic Jiuzhaigou is so entertaining, with so many distinctive "Green Lakes" reigning over the whole area.
China is a land of scenic contrasts, each uniquely representing its own area: West Lake in Hangzhou with enchanting pavilions set in quiet surroundings, Mount Emei in Sichuan with peaks peeping through mist and clouds, Guilin in Guangxi with panoramic views of mountains and rivers. And Jiuzhaigou presents another view. Aged trees wave the seasons by, amid carpets of wild flowers and thick green vegetation. Sparkling lakes and waterfalls vary with every season. Some rare trees and grasses, survivors of the glacial epoch, still thrive here in harmony with a host of creatures which make this ravine their home, for the land teems with such animals as giant pandas, golden monkeys, takins, white-eared pheasants, deer and river deer. All of this unfolds into a panorama of beautifully balanced fauna and flora. As observers from Nanping County have justly put it, "All the beauty of Jiuzhaigou is endowed by nature. If the natural charm were removed, there would be no more of Jiuzhaigou."Mystic lakes and sparkling waterfalls captivate your eyes as you enter the ravine. The trees are their greenest in spring when intensified by colorful flowers. In summer, warm tints spread over the hills and lakelands. As summer merges into autumn, the maple trees turn fiery-red, splashing color through the thickly forested hills. Tranquility pervades primitive Jiuzhaigou throughout the year, particularly at places around Mirror Lake and Five-flower Lake at Rizegou, and Multi-colored Lake at Zechawagou, where a profusion of colors is brought into full harmony with nature. This singular spectacle can only be seen in Jiuzhaigou-a natural preserve.
In addition to this natural beauty Jiuzhaigou, again, is noted for its three scenic areas which are so concentrated in the region and yet so strikingly contrasted with each other that tourists cannot believe their eyes even when they see them. After visiting this fairyland in autumn, a tourist entrepreneur from abroad exclaimed, "Of all the scenic spots the world has ever produced, nothing compares with this." He then turned to his companion, the deputy head of Nanping County, and said, "You are lucky to govern the most beautiful place in the world."Scenic Jiuzhaigou is indeed one of nature's most extravagant splendors anywhere and the crowning glory of Sichuan Province.

Sanya is superior in geography climate and natural resources. It is known as " the oriental Hawaii" and " Sunshine City" because of its special tropical scenes as well as its attractive nature. Sanya's tourist resources, richly endowed by nature, are not only special in China, but also rare in the world. It is a most fashionable place where tropical marine tourist resources are closely concentrated and lovers of swimming can enjoy their holidays in winter. Within the city, well-known tourist spots are dotted everywhere--the national Yalong Tourist Area, the Tianyahaijia, the Great Eastern Sea, the Luhuitou Peninsula, Sanya Bay and the Luobi Grotto. Besides these, there remain the ancient Yazhou City and relics and a sculpture of the Monk Jianzhen of the Tang Dynasty, who landed ashore to avoid the storm when he was sailing eastwards to Japan.
Now the Buddhist Cultural Sightseeing spot has been partly completed and opened to the public. The Nation Hot Springs area is now under construction. It is rare that a city can concentrate all such resources: sunshine, seawater, beaches, climate, forest, animals, hot springs, grottos, customs and countryside. According to statistics, the average per capita life span of Sanya people has risen to 74.5 year old, the highest in China.

为了与其所在的纽约州相区分,被称为纽约市(New York City,官方名称为:The City of New York)。
New York City is the most beguiling place there is. You may not think so at first - for the city is admittedly mad, the epitome in many ways of all that is wrong in modern America. But spend even a week here and it happens - the pace, the adrenaline take hold, and the shock gives way to myth. Walking through the city streets is an experience, the buildings like icons to the modern age, and above all to the power of money. Despite all the hype, the movie-image sentimentalism, Manhattan - the central island and the city's real core - has massive romance: whether it's the flickering lights of the midtown skyscrapers as you speed across the Queensboro bridge, the 4am half-life in Greenwich Village, or just wasting the morning on the Staten Island ferry, you really would have to be made of stone not to be moved by it all.
None of which is to suggest that New York is a conventionally pleasing city. Take a walk in Manhattan beside Central Park, notably its east side, past the city's richest apartments and best museums, and keep walking: within a dozen or so blocks you find yourself in the lower reaches of Spanish Harlem. The shock could hardly be more extreme. The city is constantly like this, with glaring, in-your-face wealth juxtaposed with urban problems - poverty, the drug trade, homelessness - that have a predictably high profile. Things have definitely changed during the nineties, especially in the recent, Mayor Guiliani years. Crime figures are at their lowest in years and are still dropping (statistically, New York is now one of the country's safest big cities), and renewal plans have finally begun to undo years of urban neglect. But for all its new clean-cut image New York remains a unique place – one you'll want to return to again and again.
The city also has more straightforward pleasures. There are the different ethnic neighborhoods of Lower Manhattan, from Chinatown to the Jewish Lower East Side and ever diminishing Little Italy; and the artsy concentrations in SoHo, TriBeCa, and the East and West Village. There is the architecture of corporate Manhattan and the more residential Upper East and West Side districts (the whole city reads like an illustrated history of modern design); and there is the art, which affords weeks of wandering in the Metropolitan and Modern Art Museums and countless smaller collections. You can eat anything, at any time, cooked in any style; drink in any kind of company; sit through any number of obscure movies. The established arts - dance, theater, music - are superbly catered for, and although the contemporary music scene is perhaps not as vital or original as in, say, London or Los Angeles, New York's clubs are varied and exciting, if rarely inexpensive. And for the avid consumer, the choice of shops is vast, almost numbingly exhaustive in this heartland of the great capitalist dream.

The University of Cambridge is one of the oldest universities in the world, and one of the largest in the United Kingdom. It has a world-wide reputation for outstanding academic achievement and the high quality of research undertaken in a wide range of science and arts subjects. The University pioneers work in the understanding of disease, the creation of new materials, advances in telecommunications and research into the origins of the universe. It trains doctors, vets, architects, engineers and teachers. At all levels about half of the students at Cambridge study arts and humanities subjects, many of whom have gone on to become prominent figures in the arts, print and broadcast media. The University's achievements in the sciences can be measured by the sixty or more Nobel Prizes awarded to its members over the years.
The University is a self-governing body: the legislative authority is the Regent House, which consists of the three thousand or so members of the teaching and administrative staff of the University and Colleges who have the MA (or MA status) or a higher degree. The principal administrative body of the University is the Council, which consists mainly of members of the academic staff elected by the Regent House. The General Board of the Faculties co-ordinates the educational policy of the University and the Finance Committee of the Council supervises its financial affairs.
As Cambridge approaches its eight hundredth anniversary in 2009, it is looking to the future. The modern University is an international centre of teaching and research in a vast range of subjects: about half of the students study science or technology. Members of the University have won over sixty Nobel Prizes.
It continues to change in response to the challenges it faces. The Vice-Chancellor, for instance, is no longer a Head of College, but is a full-time administrative appointment. A Development Office and associated charitable foundation is successfully seeking funds around the world for new ventures. The 1990s have seen a major expansion of University accommodation for teaching and research. There are many major new buildings either underway or already completed, including the Law Faculty building and the Judge Institute of Management Studies, in March 1996 opened by HM The Queen

Memorial Day is a national holiday observed in theUnited States on the last Monday in May. It is theday when Americans honor the women and men whohave served in the military.
The Memorial Day holiday was first observed in 1868.The holiday was called Decoration Day. Theobservance was at what was then known as theNational Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, across thePotomac River from Washington, D.C.
It is now known as Arlington National Cemetery.
More than four million people visit the cemetery every year.
It is the most famous national burial place in the United States. It includes about 250 hectaresof rolling hills, and trees that were planted hundreds of years ago. There are more than 8,000trees of 300 species in the cemetery. Up and down the hills are lines of simple whiteheadstones marking the graves. About 400 of the markers have gold letters on them. Theseare the burial places of those who have been awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation's highestmilitary honor.
Among those buried at the cemetery are military and political leaders, cabinet officers andSupreme Court justices. Astronauts, explorers and athletes are also buried there. So arechaplains, nurses, slaves and even war correspondents.
Arlington is on the land that once belonged to George Washington Parke Custis, a step-grandson of George Washington. The cemetery holds the graves of soldiers who died in everywar in American history. Some who fought and died in the Revolutionary War in the 1700s weremoved there from a nearby cemetery.
The first military burial was on May 13, 1864 for Private William Christman, who died in theCivil War. On May 15, 1864, two unknown Union Soldiers were buried at Arlington. They werethe first of almost 5,000 unknowns who are now buried at the cemetery. On March 4, 1921,Congress approved the burial of an unidentified American soldier from World War I. It is nowthe site of the famed Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Nearly 4,000 former slaves are buried at Arlington National Cemetery. One of them is JamesParks. He dug the first graves in the cemetery. And he is the only person buried there who wasalso born on the property.
Two American presidents are buried at Arlington National Cemetery. William Howard Taft waspresident in the early 1900s. John F. Kennedy was president in the 1960s. More people havevisited his grave than any other in the United States.
Other famous people buried at the cemetery include Joe Louis. He was an Army sergeant inWorld War II. He was a world champion boxer. Robert E. Peary discovered the North Pole. Dr.Anita Newcomb McGee founded the Army Nurse Corps. And the remains of the sevenastronauts who died when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded are buried in Section 46.
Sixty-five foreigners are also buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Britain has the most, with26. South Vietnam has 10, including nine unknown soldiers.
Not everyone who gave military service to the United States may be buried at the cemetery. Those who can be buried there include anyone who died while serving on active duty or whoretired from military. Also eligible are those who received high military awards, including theMedal of Honor, those who were injured in combat and former prisoners of war. Some federalgovernment officials and the spouse and children of those buried at Arlington may also beeligible. There is no cost for the burial or funeral service.
Cemetery officials are worried that they will soon run out of space. So they have added an areawhere the ashes of people who chose to be cremated rather than buried can be placed. Thereare tens of thousands of spaces in the building, which is called a columbarium. The cemetery isalso expanding by almost 11 hectares. This will add almost 30,000 burial places.
Since 1948, on the Thursday before Memorial Day, soldiers from the 3rd US Infantry, The OldGuard, have placed small American flags in front of every headstone in the cemetery. This year, more than a thousand Old Guard soldiers placed more than 220,000 flags in front of eachgrave marker "to honor every individual buried at Arlington National Cemetery."
Some of the Old Guard soldiers placed flags in front of the graves of soldiers they knew, inSection 60. Some have called it "the saddest place in America." It is where some of the soldierswho died in America's latest wars -- in Iraq and Afghanistan -- are buried.

AZUZ: Bo, Barney, Socks, Millie, Lucky, Grits — they were all members of the U.S. government, but neither elected nor appointed. They were the adopted first dogs of U.S. presidents.
Teddy Roosevelt practically had a zoo. His family entered the White House carrying a lizard, a badger, assorted birds, guinea pigs, a hyena, a rabbit named Peter, a pony named Algonquin.
And while the nation's current leader has yet to name a canine companion, Vice President Mike Pence's family has hopped into the headlines with Marlon Bando.
JEANNE MOOS, CNN CORRESPONDENT: The vice president and his wife could kiss their audience's attention goodbye once Marlon Bando was introduced.
KAREN PENCE, WIFE OF VICE PRESIDENT MIKE PENCE: He is the first bunny to ever ride on Air Force Two.
MOOS: At this White House event to honor military families, kids got up close and personal with the Pence's pet.
Marlon Bundo may not be as famous as Bugs —
BUGS BUNNY: Gosh, ain't I a stinker?
MOOS: He may not have his own story books like Peter Rabbit.
PETER RABBIT: True, true.
MOOS: But he's already got his own acronym.
You know there's POTUS, short for president of the United States. And there's FLOTUS, short for first lady of the United States. Well, now, there's BOTUS.
PENCE: So, he is the bunny of the United States.
MOOS: BOTUS has his own Instagram account regularly updated with photos and videos. A spokesperson says he thinks he's a cat and likes to hang out with Oreo and Pickle.
The Pence's daughter, Charlotte, then a film student, got the bunny to be in a movie, so Charlotte's roommate named him Marlon Bundo.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I'm going to make an offer again with you.
MOOS: But at least this doesn't apply to Marlon Bundo.
MOVIE CHARACTER: I could have been a contender. I could have been somebody.

The Summer Palace, dominated mainly by Longevity Hill and Kunming Lake, covers an area of 2.9 square kilometers, three quarters of which is under water. Its 70,000 square meters of building space features a variety of palaces, gardens and other ancient-style architectural structures. Well known for its large and priceless collection of cultural relics, it was among the first group of historical and cultural heritage sites in China to be placed under special state protection.
The Summer Palace, originally named Qingyi Yuan or the Garden of Clear Ripples, was first constructed in 1750. It was razed to the ground by the Anglo-French Allied Forces in 1860. The Government of the Qing Dynasty started to rebuild it in 1886 with funds that it had misappropriated from the Imperial Navy and other sources. Renamed two years later as Yihe Yuan or the Garden of Health and Harmony, it was supposed to serve as a summer resort for the Empress Dowager Cixi. Known also as the Summer Palace, it was ravaged by the Allied Forces of the Eight Powers that invaded China in 1900. The damage was repaired in 1902. Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the Summer Palace has undergone several major renovations. Its major attractions such as the Four Great Regions, Suzhou Street, the Pavilion of Bright Scenery, the Hall of Serenity, the Wenchang Galleries and the Plowing and Weaving Scenery Area have been successively restored.
The Summer Palace is a monument to classical Chinese architecture, in terms of both garden design and construction. Borrowing scenes from surrounding landscapes, it radiates not only the grandeur of an imperial garden but also the beauty of nature in a seamless combination that best illustrates the guiding principle of traditional Chinese garden design: “The works of men should match the works of Heaven”. In December 1998, UNESCO included the Summer Palace on its World Heritage List with the following comments: 1) The Summer Palace in Beijing is an outstanding expression of the creative art of Chinese landscape garden design, incorporating the works of humankind and nature in a harmonious whole; 2) The Summer Palace epitomizes the philosophy and practice of Chinese garden design, which played a key role in the development of this cultural form throughout the east; 3) The imperial Chinese garden, illustrated by the Summer Palace, is a potent symbol of one of the major world civilizations.

Malibu is an affluent, beachfront city in northwestern Los Angeles County, California, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 12,645. Malibu consists of a 21-mile (34 km) strip of prime Pacific coastline. The community is famous for its warm, sandy beaches, and for being the home of many Hollywood movie stars and others associated with the entertainment industry. Most Malibu residents live within a few hundred yards of Pacific Coast Highway (State Route 1), which traverses the city, with some residents living up to a mile away from the beach up narrow canyons, and many more residents of the unincorporated canyon areas identifying Malibu as their hometown. The city is also bounded (more or less) by Topanga Canyon to the East, the Santa Monica Mountains consisting of Agoura Hills, Calabasas, and Woodland Hills to the North, the Pacific Ocean to the South, and Ventura County to the West.
Malibu's beaches include Surfrider Beach, Zuma Beach, Malibu State Beach, Topanga State Beach, Point Dume State Beach and Dan Blocker Beach; its local parks include Malibu Bluffs Park (formerly Malibu Bluffs State Park), Trancas Canyon Park, Las Flores Creek Park, and Legacy Park, with neighboring parks Malibu Creek State Park, Leo Carrillo State Beach and Park, Point Mugu State Park, and the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, and neighboring state beach Robert H.
