All of us ought to be able to brace ourselves for thepredictable challenges and setbacks that crop upeveryday. If we expect that life won’t be perfect, we’llbe able to avoid that impulse to quit. But even ifyouare strong enough to persist the obstacle course of lifeand work, sometimes you will encounter an adverseevent that will completely knock you on your back.
Whether it’s a financial loss, the loss of respect of your peers or loved ones, or some othertraumatic event in your life these major setbacks leave you doubting yourself and wondering if thingscan ever changefor the better again.
Adversity happens to all of us, and it happens all the time. Some form of major adversity is eithergoing to be there or it’s lying in wait just around the corner. To ignore adversity is to succumb tothe ultimate self-delusion.
But you must recognize that history is full of examples of men and women who achieved greatnessdespite facing hurdles so steep that easily could have crashed their spirit and left them lying in thedust. Moses was a stutterer, yet he was called on to be the voice of God. Abraham Lincoln overcomesa difficult childhood, depression, the death of two sons, and constant ridicule during the Civil Warto become arguably our greatest president ever. Helen Keller made an impact on the world despitebeing deaf, dumb, and blind from an early age. Franklin Roosevelt had polio.
There are endless examples. These were people who not only looked adversity in the face butlearned valuable lessons about overcoming difficult circumstances and were able to move ahead.

A man, i believe, must have courage and fortitude and a burning sense of justice, too. There are times we should turn the other cheek, but there are likewise times when we must fight the good fight.
by WARD GREENE
When a man is ten, he has a boy's faith in almost everthing: even Santa Claus is a belief he is not quite ready to give up so long as there is a chance the old gentleman may really live and deliver. When a man is twenty, he is closer to compete disillusion and stronger conviction than he will probably ever be in his life.
This is the age of atheists and agnostics; it is also the age of martyrs. Jesus Christ must have been a very young man when he died on the cross; Joan of Arc, they say, was only nineteen as the flames consumed her. It is in the later years---oh, anywhere from thirty to fifty---that a man at some time stands with the tatters of his hopes and dreams fallen from him and asks himself:"What, indeed, do i believe?"
He is very apt, then, to cling to the words of other men who have written for him the shadow signposts that come as anything to poiting pathways he found best in the past and roads he will trust on the way ahead. These words may be mere copybook maxims: that honesty is the best policy, or haste makes waste. They may be alone from Shakespeare---
"To thine own self be true"---or from the bible---"All things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them"---or from the poets" i myself am Heaven and Hell". They may seem a sort of hodgepodge in a man's mind, yet they can make a pattern not inconsistent and not weak.
So if i believe that i myself am Heaven and Hell, that anything less than honesty to myself and others is a boomerang on them and me; if my translation of the Golden Rule is simple acts of kindness and understanding and compassion, practiced in the hope that they will be shown to me, then i have a way of life that is a sort of unselfish selfishness. The bald statement may sound cynical, but if i can follow that way, i shall not be too unhappy here and i may face death with regret but an untroubled face and a stout heart.
But there are blocks and pitfalls in a way of life, even assuming that a man can adhere to it steadfastly despite his own inclinations to deviate. These obstacles are the work other men who adhere to other ways. Hence kindness and compassion are not enough.
A man, i believe, must have courage and fortitude and a burning sense of justice, too. There are times we should turn the other cheek, but there are likewise times when we must fight the good fight. When? Well, if a fellow can't find the answer on the signposts or in his heart, i guess he has just got to pray.

What is Love? The eternal question we all carry around deep within our heart. Love is the eternal search. Love is eternal when we find it. But do we really ever find it ? When we define it do we negate it? When we set limits on what we believe to be love do we begin to destroy it by hoping to understand or own it for ourselves? We offer it through all of our relationship we vary our giving, often by what we hope to receive in return. But is this really love?
I recently overheard someone say in a conversation that there is no such thing as “ unconditional love .” I would have to agree, although for different reasons. Love within itself is unconditional. Anything else is only an attempt to love, a learning to get us nearer to the one true knowing of love. It may be honorable, well-intentioned, passionate and desiring, courageous and pure. It may be felt as temporary, but if lost easily it may not have been love at all. Love cannot be thwarted and often fall short of what we hope love will be. This is where we learn we are human.
Love has been experienced as a life of living poetry. Love has been experienced as being the very notes of song, uplifting and generous to the wanting ear. Love has been experienced as the final act of giving one’s life for another in battle. Love has been experienced as an endless passionate over flow of emotion in the arms of waiting lover.
What do you do with the love granted to you each day? How many times do we deny its expression for others because we fear what our own expressions will bring? Are we not denying our creator every time we deny the expression of love?
Lost, empty, alone and searching. As individuals who have experienced separation or divorce, or even the loss of a loved one to death, the separation can be the most traumatic experience we live through. The heart-wrenching pain that seems to never really go away, the enormous waves that hit us daily, the times we hit the wall right after a strong and uplifting experience reminds us that we are learning. We are learning about strength, passion for our own life, about our own sincerity in our beliefs, about our loyalty to who we are, and certainly about our own genuineness. We search for that day when love will come again. We search everywhere, everyday, almost every hour.
It has been said for centuries that “ love is where the eyes meet with passion, for the eyes cannot hide what the heart feels.” So we have learned to look outward for this eternal love that will fulfill us, forgetting that it must first fill our own hearts. Perhaps that is why we fall into such pain and agony and sorrow when a love affair fails. It is at that moment that we realize we did not fail the other person we expressed love to , but we have somehow not fulfilled ourselves once again. We combat failure with a misunderstood unfulfilled promise. We lade it, not knowing if we will ever find it again. The emotion tides life and fall ,crash and settle, then lift again.
No one else, no matter how much we talk or cry, can pull us through the anxious hours of soul repair and growth. It is our own fire within that needs rekindling, guarding against the winds that would blow it out and leave us dark, cold and helpless. It is at this time that we find the lobe that binds us together with every other being that surrounds us on the planet. Eventually we find the sun still rises to meet in the morning and the stars continue to show us the way each night. The rivers still flow downstream into oceans that will never turn them away. The trees still reach upward every day praising the God that made them. We stand up straight and take a lesson from it all.
What if you woke up one morning and realized that you were the only person left on the face of the earth? Who would you love? Why do we wait so long to start the journey that begins in the same place that it ends?Love, in all its endlessness, unboundedness and failed definitions is this experience.
Love doesn’t ask why. It doesn’t come. It doesn’t go. It just is. It is not only in our hands, it is our hands. It isn’t only in our heart, it is what makes our heart beat every beat. It wraps itself around us so securely that all we need to do to survive against all odds is to recognize it as the very breath we just drew, and the last breath we just let go.

The 92-year-old,petite,well-poised and proud lady, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o’clock, with her hair fashionably coifed and makeup perfectly applied, even though she was legally blind, moved to a nursing home today.
Her husband of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary.
After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, she smiled sweetly when told her room was ready. As she maneuvered her walker to elevator I provided a visual description of her tiny room.
“I love it,”she started with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy.
“Mrs.Jones, you haven’t seen the room…just wait.”
“That doesn’t have anything to do with it,”she replied.“Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time.Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged…it’s how I arrange my mind.I already decided to love it,It's a decision I make every morning when I wake up.I have a choice;I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work or get out of bed be thankful for the ones that do.Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open I’ll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I’ve stored away…just for this time in my life.”

Inside the Russian Embassy in London a KGB colonelpuffed a cigarette as he read the handwritten notefor the third time. There was no need for the writerto express regret, he though. Correcting thisproblem would be easy. He would do that in amoment. The thought of it caused a grim smile toappear and joy to his heart. But he pushed awaythose thoughts and turned his attention to a framedphotograph on his desk. His wife was beautiful, hetold himself as he remembered the day they weremarried. That was forty-three years ago, and it hadbeen the proudest and happiest day of his life.
What had happened to all that time? Why had it passed so quickly, and why hadn't hespent more of it with her? Why hadn't he held her close and told her more often that he lovedher? He cursed himself as a tear came from the corner of his eye, ran down his cheek, thendropped onto the note. He stiffened and wiped his face with the back of his hand. There was noneed for remorse or regret, he told himself. In a few moments he would join her and at thattime would express his undying love and devotion.
After setting the note ablaze he dropped it into an ashtray and watched it burn. For a timethe names cast moving shadows on the walls of the darkened room, then they nickered anddied out. The colonel dropped the cigarette to the floor and ground it out with his heel, thenclutched the photograph to his breast, removed a pistol from his pocket, placed the barrel inhis mouth and pulled the trigger. In the ashtray a small portion of the note remained. Where ithad been wetted by his tear it had failed to bum, and on that scrap of paper were the words"died yesterday."

A college professor had his sociology class go intothe Baltimore slums to get case histories of 200young boys. They were asked to write an evaluationof each boy's future. In every case the studentswrote," He hasn't got a chance." Twenty-five yearslater another sociology professor came across theearlier study. He had his students follow up on theproject to see what had happened to these boys.
With the exception of 20 boys who had movedaway or died, the students learned that 176 of the remaining 180 had achieved more thanordinary success as lawyers, doctors and businessmen.
The professor was astounded and decided to pursue the matter further. Fortunately, all menwere in the area and he was able to ask each one," How do you account for your success?" Ineach case the reply came with feeling," There was a teacher."
The teacher was still alive, so he sought her out and asked the old but still alert lady whatmagic formula she had used to pull these boys out of the slums into successful achievement.
The teacher's eyes sparkled and her lips broke into a gentle smile. "It's really very simple," shesaid. "I loved those boys."

By Tina Karratti
Many years ago, my dad was diagnosed with aterminal heart condition. He was put on permanentdisability and was unable to work at a steady job.He would be fine for quite a while, but would then fallsuddenly ill and have to be admitted to the hospital.
He wanted to do something to keep himselfbusy, so he decided to volunteer at the local childrenhospital. My dad loved kids. It was the perfect job forhim. He ended up working with the terminally and critically ill children. He would talk to them andplay with them and do arts and crafts with them. Sometimes, he would lose one of his kids. Incertain instances, he would tell the grieving parents of these children that he would soon bewith their child in heaven and that he would take care of them until they got there. He wouldalso ask the parent if there was a message they would like to send with him for their child.
My dad assurances seemed to help parents with their grieving. One of his kids was a girlwho had been admitted with a rare disease that paralyzed her from the neck down. I don‘tknow the name of the disease or what the prognosis usually is, but I do know that it was verysad for a girl around eight or nine years old. She couldn‘t do anything, and she was verydepressed. My dad decided to try to help her. He started visiting her in her room, bringingpaints, brushes and paper. He stood the paper up against a backing, put the paintbrush in hismouth and began to paint. He didn‘t use his hands at all. Only his head would move. He wouldvisit her whenever he could and paint for her. All the while he would tell her, see, you can doanything you set your mind to.
Eventually, she began to paint using her mouth, and she and my dad became friends. Soonafter, the little girl was discharged because the doctors felt there was nothing else they could dofor her. My dad also left the children hospital for a little while because he became ill. Sometimelater after my dad had recovered and returned to work, he was at the volunteer counter in thelobby of the hospital. He noticed the front doors open. In came the little girl who had beenparalyzed, only this time she was walking. She ran straight over to my dad and hugged himreally tight. She gave my dad a picture she had done using her hands. At the bottom it read, thank you for helping me walk.
My dad would cry every time he told us this story and so would we. He would saysometimes love is more powerful than doctors, and my dad - who died just a few months afterthe little girl gave him the picture - loved every single child in that hospital.

Last night, I watched a tennis game, it was the US open, because there was a Chinese female player came to the semi-final, so I stayed up to watched the game. Unluckily, she was injured twice, though she still wanted to finish the game, her body situation did not allow her to do so. Her insistence moved so many audience, they gave her the biggest applause.
The power of insistence is great, it will help you set free your potential and keep move on. Just for the players, they will face all kinds of incidences now and then, but the will to insist will make them finish the game. Sometimes, people win the game not because of their excellent skills, but their strong will. Those who can stick on to the final line will win people’s applause.
What’s more, when people insist to finish the game, it is the respect that they show to their opponents. Their spirit deserves people’s applause. Insistence is a merit, we should keep it, no matter what we do, we must remember to insist.

A father sat at his desk poring over his monthly bills when his young son rushed in andannounced,
“Dad, because this is your birthday and you’re 55 years old, I’m going to give you 55 kisses, one for each year!” When the boy started making good on his word, the father exclaimed, “Oh,Andrew, don’t do it now; I’m too busy!”
The youngster immediately fell silent as tears welled up in his big blue eyes. Apologically thefather said, “You can finish later.”
The boy said nothing but quietly walked away, disappointment written over his face. Thatevening the father said, “Come and finish the kisses now, Andrew!” But the boy didn’trespond.
Unfortunately, a few days later after this incident, the boy had an accident and was drowned. His heartbroken father wrote...
“If only I could tell him how much I regret my thoughtless words, and could be assured that heknows how much my heart is aching.”
…Love is a two-way street. Any loving act must be warmly accepted or it will be taken asrejection and can leave a scar. If we are too busy to give and receive love, we are too busy!Nothing is more important than responding with love to the cry for love from those who arenear and precious to us. Because... there may be no chance at all as in the case of the littleboy...

Jackie Lantry is a part-time hospital clerk inRehoboth, Mass. She and her husband have adoptedtwo girls and two boys from China. When Jackieasked her children what they believed in, they said"family."
“It was not therapy, counselors or medications. Itdid not cost money, require connections or GREat privilege. It was love: just simple, plain, easy to give.”
I believe in the inGREdients[成分] of love, the elements from which it is made. I believe in love''shumble, practical components and their combined power.
We adopted[收养] Luke four years ago. the people from the orphanage[孤儿院] dropped him offat our hotel room without even saying goodbye. He was nearly six years old, only 28 poundsand his face was crisscrossed[交叉着] with scars. Clearly, he was terrified[害怕的]. "What are hisfavorite things?" I yelled. "Noodles," they replied as the elevator door shut.
Luke kicked and screamed. I stood between him and the door to keep him from bolting[门栓].His cries were anguished[痛苦的], animal-like. He had never seen a mirror and tried to escape byrunning through one. I wound my arms around him so he could not hit or kick. After an hourand a half he finally fell asleep, exhausted[精疲力竭的]. I called room service. They deliveredevery noodle dish on the menu. Luke woke up, looked at me and started sobbing again. Ihanded him chopsticks[筷子] and pointed at the food. He stopped crying and started to eat. Heate until I was sure he would be sick.
That night we went for a walk. Delighted at the moon, he pantomimed[打手势], "What is it?" Isaid, "The moon, it''s the moon." He reached up and tried to touch it. He cried again when Itried to give him a bath until I started to play with the water. By the end of his bath the roomwas soaked[浸湿的] and he was giggling[傻笑]. I lotioned him up, powdered him down andclothed him in soft PJs. We read the book One Yellow Lion. He loved looking at the colorfulpictures and turning the pages. By the end of the night he was saying, "one yellow lion."
the next day we met orphanage officials to do paperwork. Luke was on my lap[膝] as they filedinto the room. He looked at them and wrapped my arms tightly around his waist[腰].
He was a sad, shy boy for a long time after those first days. He cried easily and withdrew at theslightest provocation[激怒]. He hid food in his pillowcase[枕头套] and foraged[翻寻] in garbagecans. I wondered then if he would ever get over the wounds of neglect that the orphanage hadbeaten into[灌输给] him.
It has been four years. Luke is a smart, funny, happy fourth-grader. He is loaded with charmand is a natural athlete. His teachers say he is well behaved and works very hard. Our neighborsays she has never seen a happier kid.
When I think back, I am amazed at what transformed this abused, terrified little creature. Itwas not therapy, counselors or medications. It did not cost money, require connections orGREat privilege. It was love: just simple, plain, easy to give. Love is primal. It is comprised ofcompassion, care, security, and a leap of faith. I believe in the power of love to transform. Ibelieve in the power of love to heal.

People say, you can not change the environment, but can change their own; you can not change the facts, but can change attitudes; you can not change the past, but can be changed now; you can not control other people, but can be masters of our own; you can not do everything well, but can be conscientious in everything; you can not about the weather, but you can change the mood; you can not choose looks, but it can show a smile.
Indeed, one key to the success lies in his (her) mind. The difference between successful people and the losers are: winners will be setbacks and difficulties due to personal ability, experience, imperfect, to emphasize the inherent, they are willing to continuously improve and develop the right direction; and the losers will blame on the opportunity, and the environment injustice, emphasizing external and uncontrollable factors that created the position of their life, they always complain, wait and give up!
In many cases, is a humble person who is looked down upon his own. Person's appearance, his family, and so a priori condition that can not be changed, but at least inner state, the spirit of the will is entirely their own control. Mentality, the final decision of life high. There is no absolute bad thing, only the mentality of the absolute poor people. If even the state of mind will not adjust, how they deal with things more complicated than the mentality of it!
No matter what the situation, a person's attitude is very important. Passion put to work, and numbness sluggish to work completely different. Emerson said: "A move toward their goals is always people who gave him the whole world to give way." On the contrary, failure is not because we do not have the strength, but because we are susceptible to all around us, used to go along with the lack of assertive, attitude unstable, easily frustrated reason.
As long as we believe that the strength of mind, change their attitude and courage to face a number of disappointments in life, do not despair, brave go on.
I believe the power of mind, mind you're in the height of the final decision
Jerry was the kind of guy you love to hate. He was always in a good mood and always had something positive to say. When someone asked him how he was doing, he would reply, "If I were any better, I would be twins!"
He was a unique manager because he had several waiters who had followed him around from restaurant to restaurant. The reason the waiters followed Jerry was because of his attitude. He was a natural motivator. If an employee was having a bad day, Jerry was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.
Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to Jerry and asked him, "I don't get it! You can't be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?"
Jerry replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, 'Jerry, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood.' I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life."
"Yeah, right, it's not that easy," I protested.
"Yes, it is," Jerry said. "Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people will affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It's your choice how you live life."
I reflected on what Jerry said. Soon thereafter, I left the restaurant industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.
Several years later, I heard that Jerry did something you are never supposed to do in a restaurant business: he left the back door open one morning and was held up at gunpoint by three armed robbers. While trying to open the safe, his hand, shaking from nervousness, slipped off the combination. The robbers panicked and shot him.
Luckily, Jerry was found relatively quickly and rushed to the local trauma center. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, Jerry was released from the hospital with fragments of the bullets still in his body.
I saw Jerry about six months after the accident. When I asked him how he was, he replied, "If I were any better, I'd be twins. Wanna see my scars?" I declined to see his wounds, but did ask him what had gone through his mind as the robbery took place.
"The first thing that went through my mind was that I should have locked the back door," Jerry replied. "Then, as I lay on the floor, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live, or I could choose to die. I chose to live."
"Weren't you scared? Did you lose consciousness?" I asked.
Jerry continued, "The paramedics were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the emergency room and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read, "He's a dead man." "I knew I needed to take action."
"What did you do?" I asked.
"Well, there was a big, burly nurse shouting questions at me," said Jerry. "She asked if I was allergic to anything. "Yes," I replied. The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, "Bullets!"
Over their laughter, I told them. "I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead."
Jerry lived thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude. I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully.
Attitude, after all, is everything.

Two trains are traveling side by side and at the same speed along parallel tracks. We areseated in one of the trains, and with us we have a special speedometer that measures theirrelative speed. Since the trains are traveling at the same speed, their relative speed is zero; thespeedometer therefore reads "0."
Suddenly the other train seems to start pulling ahead of ours. The speedometer shows areading of 10 miles per hour. The other train has apparently increased its speed. But can we beabsolutely certain of this increase?
If your answer is yes, you are wrong. You are wrong because all that we know is that therelative speed between the two trains changed from 0 mph to 10 mph. Nothing more. Thischange could have been brought about in one of two ways:
The other train increased its speed.
Our train decreased its speed.
There are thus two possible explanations to account for the change in speed, but we don'tknow which one is right. Furthermore, regardless of which explanation we choose, the endresult will be the same: the other train will arrive at the station first. So it makes no differencewhether we say that the other train increased its speed or that our train decreased its speed.
Since both explanations lead to the same result, you can choose either one. Whenever twothings are relative, you can choose either one of them. The converse is also true: wheneveryou have a choice between two things that are equally possible, then the things are relative.
There is no reason, except convenience, for choosing one explanation over the other. Therelative speed between the trains remains the same, 10 mph; and the end result will be thesame.
Now let's suppose that both trains are at the railroad station loading and unloading passengersand baggage. A half-hour passes. As we look at the other train through our window, we seethat our train seems to start moving, smoothly and slowly. For a minute or so, our train seemsto travel at a uniform speed. Our special speedometer shows that the relative speed betweenthe two trains is 20 mph. But as we look out our window, we suddenly see the last coach ofthe other train disappear from sight and notice the motionless station behind it. So we are notmoving after all. The other train has been moving!
This peculiar and often frustrating experience is an effect of relative motion. At the train stationwe cannot tell whether it was our train that changed its speed from 0 mph to 20 mph orwhether it was the other train that changed its speed from 0 mph to 20 mph. Only after theother train pulled out of the station could we see that it, and not our train, was moving.
Now let us again raise the question that was raised at the beginning of this article: can we beabsolutely certain that the other train did indeed increase its speed, and in this case pull outof the station?
If your answer is yes, then you are wrong again. All we can be certain of is that the relativespeed between the two trains changed.
These examples illustrate an important principle in the special theory of relativity. If A appearsto be moving at a steady speed relative to B, we cannot know for sure if it is A that is reallymoving. Perhaps A is standing still, and B is moving. Or perhaps both are moving. According torelativity, there is no experiment that can be devised to solve the problem. As there is no wayof deciding which of the two objects is moving, we can choose either one as the moving object. The reason is that their motion is relative, and relativity, as we have seen, means that we havea choice.
This principle - that if two objects are in uniform motion relative to each other, it isimpossible to decide which one is moving and which one is at rest - applies to all objectsmoving uniformly in a straight line through the universe.
In relativity you'll find that whenever you have a choice among things that are equally possible, you are dealing with relative things. For example, time, which is measured with clocks andwatches, is relative because it can be shown that there is more than one system of time. Allsystems of time are equally possible and you can choose any system you with.
