Who was the first man?
A teacher said to her class:”Who was the first man?”
“George Washington,” a little boy shouted promptly.
“How do you make out that George Washington was the first man?”asked the teacher, smiling indulgently.
“Because,” said the little boy, “he was first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen.”
But at this point a larger boy held up his hand. “Well,” said the teacher to him, “who do you think was the first man?”
“I don’t know what his name was, ” said the larger boy, “but I know it wasn’t George Washington, ma’am, because the history book says George Washington married a widow, so, of course, there must have been a man ahead of him.”

In this respect, it is important for a young man to appreciate the difference between male tears and female. I remember once asking the actress Emilia Fox if she could cry at will, right there and then, over lunch.
Real men don't cry. We just get something in our eye.
A short walk from my house in Hampshire, on a hill overlooking the heathland, is a plaque1marking the spot where Richard Pryce Jones deliberately2 crashed his Halifax bomber3during the war. He could have parachuted to safety, but that would have meant crashing into the village. The epitaph(碑文,墓志铭) reads: "He died that others might live."
It never fails to move me. Not to tears, you understand. That would be disrespectful. But I do usually manage a lump in the throat and that film of moisture(水分,湿度) over the eyes that men have in their emotional armoury. Gordon Brown demonstrated the non-crying cry beautifully when he made his farewell speech on the steps of Number 10. That catch in the throat. The determination not to weep in public. At that moment, if at no other, he had nobility.
Not everyone can carry it off. I don't think Paul Gascoigne ever quite got the hang of it, for example. But I like to think I have it down to an art, my technique honed from years of watching The Railway Children, Sleepless4 in Seattle and that scene in Dumbo when the mother elephant is locked away. "Daddy!" my sons will say, pointing the accusing finger. "You're crying!"
"Me? Over Dumbo? Ha ha ha. No, boys, what I am doing is man-crying, a sort of non-crying cry. I'll teach you it one day. Very useful."
They are too young to appreciate the nuance5 yet, but when they are older I will explain that open sobbing6 is associated with being female, and so inappropriate for men. The Charlie Chaplin analogy might be useful here. He once said that the way to act drunk is to imagine yourself a drunk man trying to act sober(冷静的,清醒的). The same is true when a man learns the non-crying cry. To be convincing, you must look as if you are trying to avoid tears.
In this respect, it is important for a young man to appreciate the difference between male tears and female. I remember once asking the actress Emilia Fox if she could cry at will, right there and then, over lunch. To my astonishment7, she could – from a standing8 start. Fat tears rolling down her cheeks. When she had finished, she resumed her smiling countenance9.
Those are female tears, and the reason you never hear anyone say: "It's enough to make a grown woman cry." That expression only works when it refers to "grown men" and though that may seem tautological10, the "grown" is justified11. Not all men are grown. The emotionally incontinent exhibitionists who cry when they are kicked off talent shows such as The X Factor are not grown men, for example. Men have to be careful what they cry at, because some subjects are more worthy12 of tears than others. Grief, obviously. But not self-pity. And rarely should a man cry in pain. And never at the death of a princess he didn't know. Those are the rules.
I suspect my colleague Matt Pritchett might be with me on this. One of his cartoons this past week showed a father next to a television tuned13 to the World Cup, explaining to his children that "at some point in the next few weeks, you are going to see me cry". And the day after the last survivor14 of the Great Escape died, he did a cartoon showing a gravestone with amound15 of tunnelled earth trailing away from it. I seemed to have something in my eye when I saw that, and I expect he had the same something in his eye when he drew it.

Foshan, Ningbo and Dongguan are the mainland’s most romantic cities, according to a list compiled by Amazon China based on its nationwide sales results.
Changsha, Wuxi, Kunming, Chongqing, Chengdu, Shenyang and Dalian completed the top 10, beating out Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, which ranked 13th, 19th and 22nd respectively.
The online retailer compiled its first list of China’s most romantic cities based on 2013 sales of love, wedding, romance and idol-themed books, e-books and CDs.
Contrary to the stereotype that southerners are more refined while northerners are more passionate, 60 per cent of the top 30 cities were in the south.
此外,文中的retailer,意思是“零售商”,源于动词retail(零售),与之相对的就是wholesale(批发)和wholesaler(批发商)。

The silence of men in general is overtalked aboutand overcriticized. To be sure, men never open up asmuch as women want them to, but there is a wordless understanding in which we functionfairly well especially in friendships.
I believe, in fact, that most women would prefer a man to be gloomily uncommunicativethan to spill his guts at the drop of a hat.
The push for men to express their feelings presumes that we have feelings, and we do havea few, but they remain submerged, and the airing of them often violates their authenticity.
I am no biologist, but my guess is that the male human animal was programmed forsilence. I would go so far as to argue that men were programmed to be isolated from oneanother and that aloneness is our natural state. Silence in male friendships is our way of beingalone with each other.
Once men have established a friendship that itself is the word. The affection is obvious,at least to us. A main component of our silence is an appreciation of the affection.

where can you discover the charm of paris foryourself? is it in the legacy of all the french rulerswho worked to beautify their beloved city? is it in the famous castles, palaces, statues andmonuments, such as the eiffel tower? can you find it in the world-class museums, such as thelouvre? perhaps paris' allure lies in the zest and style of the parisians.
when you visit paris, you don't have to spend all of your time visiting museums andmonuments. they are certainly worthy of your time, but ignore them for a day. first take sometime to look around and experience life in paris. you'll find it charming.
take a stroll along the seine river. browse through the art vendors, colorful paintings. peekthrough delicate iron gates at the well-kept gardens. watch closely for the french attention todetail that has made france synonymous with good taste. you will see it in the design of adoorway or arch and in the little fountains and quaint balconies. no matter where you look, you will find everyday objects transformed into works by art.
spend some time in a quiet park relaxing on an old bench. lie on your back on the greengrass. when you need refreshment, try coffee and pastries at a sidewalk cafe. strike up aconversation with a parisian. this isn't always easy, though. with such a large internationalpopulation living in paris, true natives are hard to find these days.
as evening comes to paris, enchantment rises with the mist over the riverfront. you mayhear music from an outdoor concert nearby: classical, jazz, opera or chansons, those frenchfolk songs. parisians love their music. the starry sky is their auditorium. you can also hearconcerts in the chateaux and cathedrals. in paris the music never ends.
don't miss the highlight of paris evening: eating out. parisians are proud of their cuisine.and rightly so; it's world famous. gourmet dining is one of the indispensable joys of living. youneed a special guidebook to help you choose one of the hundreds of excellent restaurants. thecapital of france boasts every regional specialty, cheese and wine the country has to offer. if youdon't know what to order, ask for the suggested menu. the chef likes to showcase his bestdishes there. remember, you haven't tasted the true flavor of france until you've dined at afrench restaurant in paris.

My friend John McHugh is always telling me things, things that younger men need wiser, older men totell them. Things like whom to trust, how to love, how to live a good life.
Not long ago John lost his wife, Janet, to cancer. Godknows she was a fighter, but in the end the diseasewon their eight-year battle.
One day John pulled a folded paper from his wallet. He’d found it, he told me, while going throughdrawers in his house. It was a love note, in Janet’s handwriting. It looked a little like aschoolgirl’s daydream note about the boy across the way. All that was missing was a hand-drawn heart and the names John and Janet. Except this note was written by the mother ofseven children, a woman who had begun the battle for her life, and very probably was withinmonths of the end.
It was also a wonderful prescription for holding a marriage together. This is how JanetMcHugh’s note about her husband begins:” Loved. Cared. Worried. ”
As quick with a joke an John is, apparently he didn’t joke with his wife about cancer. He’d comehome, and she’d be in one of the moods cancer patients get lost in, and he’d have her in thecar faster than you can say DiNardo’s, her favorite restaurant. “Get in the car,” he’d say,” I’mtaking you out to dinner.”
He worried, and she knew it. You don’t hide things from someone who knows better.
“Helped me when I was sick.” is next. Maybe Janet wrote her list when the cancer was in one ofthose horrible and wonderful remission periods, when all is as it was—almost—before thedisease, so what harm is there in hoping that it’s behind you, maybe for good?
“Forgave me for a lot of things.”
“Stood by me.”
And then, good service to those of us who think giving constructive criticism is our religiouscalling: “Always complimentary.”
“Provide everything I ever needed.” Janet McHugh next wrote.
Then she’d turned the man she had lived with and been in love with for the majority of her life. She’d written:” Always there when I needed you.”
The last thing she wrote sums up all the others. I can picture her adding it thoughtfully to herlist. ”Good friend.”
I stand beside John now, unable even to pretend that I know what it feels like to lose someoneso close. I need to hear what he has to say, much more than he needs to talk.
“John,” I ask,” how do you stick by someone through 38 years of marriage. “let done thesickness too? How do I know I’d have what it takes to stand by my wife if she got sick?”
“you will,” he says. ”If you love her enough, you will.”

How much make-up do men really find attractive? Dating site discovers women with lipstick and blush are THREE TIMES more likely to be asked on a date.
Men are three times more likely to ask a woman out online if she is wearing make-up in her dating profile picture, a new survey has discovered.
Zoosk, a dating site and app, analyzed 1,200 women’s profiles and found that these individuals were three times more likely to be messaged if they were wearing make-up including eye shadow, lipstick and blush.
The site’s male users appear to prefer eye make-up the most, as women who were pictured with painted lids received 139 percent more first messages than those who did not.
Lipstick followed a close second, as women received 119per cent more notes than those who were shown with a bare pout.
Cheeks, however, appear the least important, as women wearing blush or bronzer only received 24 percent more notes than those who did not.
But there are some parameters involved in men’s preference for make-up –mainly that it has to ‘look’ natural.
In surveying 1,800 male members, Zoosk found that 66per cent of them do not find dates who wear dark make-up attractive.
he same goes for red lipstick, as 57per cent of respondents found the color cosmetic to be an unattractive first-date choice.
In terms of hair, it seems that natural is always the way to go. Natural styles were preferred by 84per cent of respondents, over follicles that had been dyed an unearthly color.
A natural wave is also appreciated, as only 9per cent of men preferred pin-straight, flat ironed locks to those boasting some form of texture.

The books goes on to explain that for many, the secret to a happy relationship includes having regular date nights, using pet names, holding hands, passionate kissing, back rubs and frequently saying 'I love you'.
But the most important factor, which almost everyone surveyed agreed on, was communication. In unhappy relationships, a lack of communication was cited as the number one reason for it breaking down.
