Clearly Taylor Swift aspires to be more than just another country star. And thus far, her reinvention of herself as a pop star is going quite well.
First, let’s take a look at how the 24-year-old singer has been rebranding herself. In March, she moved from Nashville, Tennessee, the center of American country music, to New York City. Since then, intentionally or not, Swift’s social circle has been filled with more “cool people”. Her roommate? Supermodel Karlie Kloss. New best friend? Lena Dunham, creator and star of HBO’s hit series Girls, aka “the voice of a generation”.、
Of course, Swift’s new lifestyle is reflected in her music. In August, with the release of Shake It Off, the first single from her forthcoming fifth album 1989, out on Oct 27, Swift announced she’d take a break from country music to produce her first pop album.
During a live video stream on Yahoo .com in August, Swift said that in the two years since she released Red, her last album, she grew and changed in a way that made it necessary for her to change her style of music.
Based on the first two released songs —the second single Out of the Woods was released two weeks ago — the country superstar is striding into pop with the same degree of effortlessness as her recent image change in magazines and on red carpets.
《1989》中的第二首单曲《Out of the Woods》也于两周前发布。
Whenever Swift releases new music, the public seems to be obsessed with the question of whether the song makes reference to a past relationship. So here comes another big change on her new album: for the first time in years, there are no diss tracks dishing about Swift’s ex-boyfriends. In the cover story of Rolling Stone magazine’s September issue, Swift reveals that a few of the songs on the album are about her relationships and love life, but they’re mostly wistful and nostalgic, not finger-pointy or score-settling.
If what she said is true, I’d like to think of this as the biggest surprise to come out of her transition, compared to veering sharply from her earlier country sound. Although it’s natural for musicians to deal with their emotions by writing about them, Swift’s new sensible and balanced approach is a sign of her maturing into a real star.
To that extent, Swift just keeps getting more interesting.

the golden gate bridge is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world.
even people who hate the usa love san francisco. it has an atmosphere of genteel (彬彬有礼的;有教养的)chic(高尚、别致) mixed with offbeat(不跟随时尚主流的;非传统的;特异的)innovation, and a selfeffacing(自我谦逊的)quality so blatantly missing from new york and la.
one of the usa's most attractive cities, san francisco's hilly streets provide some gorgeous glimpses of the san francisco bay and its famous bridges. this is a mosaic(马赛克式的东西)of a city, a big picture made from the colorful tiles of bustling chinatown, gay castro (旧金山一著名同性恋社区)and faux-hemian(法语词,故意表现得质朴童稚的)north beach.
san francisco covers the tip of a 30mi (50km) peninsula (半岛) in northern california, with the pacific ocean on its western side and the san francisco bay to the north and east. san francisco is just one of many cities in the bay area; others include oakland (east across the bay bridge), berkeley (just north of oakland) and san jose (an hour's drive southeast of san francisco, near the southern tip of the bay)。 marin county and the wine country lie to the north, across the golden gate bridge.
a newly restored street car on market street
the most touristed part of the city resembles a slice of pie, with van ness ave and market st making the two sides and the embarcadero the round edge of the pie. the steaming toppings of this homebaked slice are the classy shops around union square, the highrise financial district, the classy civic center, the down-and-out but up-and-coming tenderloin, swanky(华丽的) nob hill and russian hill, chinatown, north beach and the epicenter of tourist kitsch, fisherman's wharf(渔人码头)。 to the south of market st lies soma, an upwardly mobile warehouse zone of clubs and bars that fades in the southwest into the mission - the city's latino quarter - and then the castro, the center of gay life.
making a circuit of the 49-mile drive is a good way to check out almost all of the city's highlights(最有意思或精彩的部分)。 the route is well posted with instantly recognizable seagull signs, but a map and an alert navigator are essential. do yourself a favor and allow a whole day to complete the circuit.
greyhound is the only regular long-distance bus company operating to the city - all bus services arrive and depart at the transbay terminal in soma. amtrak's rail network connects the bay area with the rest of the continental us and canada. its main stations are in oakland and emeryville, both in the east bay. caltrain links san francisco with the peninsula and san jose; its depot is in soma.

it used to be called ‘god's waiting room'. and even today, if you mention miami to someone who hasn't been here or read about it lately, they might conjure up(回忆)a blurry memory of octogenarians(八十多岁)mingling poolside(游泳池边)while aunt sadie implored them to wait half an hour after eating before going into the water. today the old folks mingle with fashion designers, bikini(比基尼泳装)models, and a city that once had the highest murder rate in the us attracts more than 11 million tourists a year.
the greater miami area, which includes miami and miami beach as well as distinctive neighborhoods like little havana and little haiti, is a melting pot that america's founding fathers would be proud of. half of miami's population is hispanic(美籍西班牙人), and its immigrant communities focus on what's happening in havana or caracas(加拉加斯,委内瑞拉首都)as much as they follow events in washington dc, giving the city an international outlook. for the casual visitor this means a city peppered with the flavors of latin american food, language, music, politics and spirit.
miami is the most populated city in florida. it sits at the southeastern tip of the florida, the most southeastern state of the united states, bordered by the atlantic ocean to the east, the gulf of mexico to the west and the neighboring states of alabama and georgia to the north.
most visitors aren't here for miami itself, but rather to visit miami beach, an entirely separate municipality. miami is on the mainland, while the city of miami beach is on a thin barrier island about 4 miles east, across biscayne bay(比斯坎湾) - locals call it the billion dollar sandbar(十亿美元的沙坝)。 many of the beach's locals are imports from new york, people tired of sitting through five hours of snarled traffic on their way to the hamptons, who decided that miami beach made a lot more sense. they brought with them a fledgling art and culture crowd whose numbers included many younger artists.
the boundaries of ‘season' in miami - which used to be limited to winter - have been blurred by the huge number of people moving to the area and the stampede(蜂拥)of fashion and film shoots. but the most popular time to come here is still between december and may, when temperatures average between 16-30°c, and average rainfall is a scant couple of inches.

Nestled between the sparkling waters of two large harbours is Auckland, the largest city of New Zealand. Auckland is affectionately known as" the City of Sails".
Most of the residents of Auckland love sailing very much, and they are preoccupied by three B's: beaches, boats and barbecues. They take every available opportunity to desert their homes in droves to head for the nearest beach or boat harbour, armed with battered barbecue sets and polystyrene "chilly bins" packed full with ice-cold beer. It is really a magnificent scene. And towards the end of January, an annual sailing competition is held, in which up to l, 000 sailing boats compete on the Waitemate Harbour. That is the sporting highlight of the year of Auckland.
But who can blame Aucklanders? They happened to be blessed with two beautiful harbours, scores of swimming beaches in which people can swim, a coast line dotted with secluded offshore islands, sophisticated living standards and a summer climate that insist on outdoor life.
(1) QUEEN STREET
Queen Street is Auckland's traditional main street or "Golden Mile", offering the best range of shopping. All the shops and big department stores of the city are gathered in this street. It is the best commercial center of New Zealand. Souvenir and sheepskin shops sell hand-made woolen garments, Maori carvings, greenstone (jade) ornaments, shell jewelry, opossum fur coats and wooly car-seat covers.
(2) QUEEN ELIZABETH SQUARE
The bottom of Queen Street is occupied by Queen Elizabeth Square which contains the Central Post Office, Downtown Complex and Air Zealand. The Square is a favorite haunt of lunchtime office workers, soapbox orators and protest marchers bewailing grievance ranging from visits by nuclear ships to stingy kindergarten funding. A gaily colored fruit for offers kiwi fruit, feijoas, tamarillos, pepino, kumara and other fresh New Zealand products while a Danish icecream parlour tempts the sweeter tooth.
(3)THE OLD CUSTOMHOUSE
Sitting majestically opposite to the Downtown Complex on the corner of Customs and Albert streets is the Old Customhouse which is the financial heart of Auckland for more than 80 years.
Designed in French Renaissance style, the building was completed in 1889 and is one of the last remaining examples of Monumental Victorian architecture to be found in the central business district. Open seven days a week, the Old Customhouse houses a cinema, arts and crafts emporium, gift shop, restaurants, tavern, coffee bar and shop selling, wood and woolen products.
(4) VICTORIAPARK MARKETS
Ten minutes' walk to the west of the Old Customhouse are the Victoria Pat Markets. The markets are located on the disused site of the city's former rubbish destructor.
Completed in l905, the yellow brick buildings were opened by Mayor Aithur Myers, who was hauled to the top of the 40-metre chimney in a ship's bo' sun chair to lay the final brick. The historic site now offers seven-day buying at fruit, vegetable, fish and craft shops or hawkers barrows and food stalls.

For almost two hundred years, the White House has stood as a symbol of the Presidency, the United States government, and the American people. Its history, and the history of the nation's capital, began when President George Washington signed an Act of Congress in December of 1790 declaring that the federal government would reside in a district "not exceeding ten miles square...on the river Potomac." President Washington, together with city planner Pierre L'Enfant, chose the site for the new residence, which is now 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. As preparations began for the new federal city, a competition was held to find a builder of the "President's House." Nine proposals were submitted, and Irish-born architect James Hoban won a gold medal for his practical and handsome design.
Construction began when the first cornerstone was laid in October of 1792. Although President Washington oversaw the construction of the house, he never lived in it. It was not until 1800, when the White House was nearly completed, that its first residents, President John Adams and his wife, Abigail, moved in. Since that time, each President has made his own changes and additions. The White House is, nt's private home. It is also the only private residence of a head of state that is open to the public, free of charge.
The White House has a unique and fascinating history. It survived a fire at the hands of the British in 1814 (during the war of 1812) and another fire in the West Wing in 1929, while Herbert Hoover was President. Throughout much of Harry S. Truman's presidency, the interior of the house, with the exception of the third floor, was completely gutted and renovated while the Trumans lived at Blair House, right across Pennsylvania Avenue. Nonetheless, the exterior stone walls are those first put in place when the White House was constructed two centuries ago.
Presidents can express their individual style in how they decorate some parts of the house and in how they receive the public during their stay. Thomas Jefferson held the first Inaugural open house in 1805. Many of those who attended the swearing-in ceremony at the U.S. Capitol simply followed him home, where he greeted them in the Blue Room. President Jefferson also opened the house for public tours, and it has remained open, except during wartime, ever since. In addition, he welcomed visitors to annual receptions on New Year’s Day and on the Fourth of July. In 1829, a horde of 20,000 Inaugural callers forced President Andrew Jackson to flee to the safety of a hotel while, on the lawn, aides filled washtubs with orange juice and whiskey to lure the mob out of the mud-tracked White House.
After Abraham Lincoln's presidency, Inaugural crowds became far too large for the White House to accommodate them comfortably. However, not until Grover Cleveland's first presidency did this unsafe practice change. He held a presidential review of the troops from a flag-draped grandstand built in front of the White House. This procession evolved into the official Inaugural parade we know today. Receptions on New Year's Day and the Fourth of July continued to be held until the early 1930s.
President Clinton's open house on January 21, 1993 renewed a venerable White House Inaugural tradition. Two thousand citizens, selected by lottery, were greeted in the Diplomatic Reception Room by President and Mrs. Clinton and Vice President and Mrs. Gore.

Dan: So, is L.A. all it's cracked up to be?
Nicole: Well, the stereotype in the movies is that L.A. is a frivolous town with a lot of flaky people. I guess, in the back of my mind, that's what I expected.
Dan: And, is it what you found?
Nicole: Well, it is and it's not. The city of L.A. is much bigger and more diverse than I had expected. There are people here from all over the country and all over world, like New York. I've heard people say that in L.A., everyone is from somewhere else. Tha's partly true. So, I've met all kinds of people here. What I'm realizing is that the picture of L.A. that's in movies only represents a small segment of the city.
Dan: You're right. Life isn't always like the movies.

A famous American John Muir said in 1898: “The Grand Canyon… as unearthly in the color and grandeur and quantity of its architecture as if you had found it after death on some other star.”
Like Muir, those of us who stand along the rim are prompted to wonder about the unearthliness and the forces that created and are still changing this place After more than 100 years of studies, many things are still obscure. Today visitors come by the thousands - the great and simple of the earth - all in a spirit of marvel. Travelers come from every state of the Union, from every country in Europe and Asia, pilgrims to a shrine that is the same as the creed. From the depths of the canyon comes welling silence. Seldom can you hear the roar of the river. You cannot catch the patter. Like applause, from the leaves of the cottonwoods on the shelf-like plateau below you. For all sounds are swallowed in this gulf of space. ‘It makes one want to murmur.' A woman once whispered to her companion. This silence is not the silence of death; Rather, it is a presence. It is like a great piece of music. But music made of man works up to a climax and ceases; the Grand Canyon is all climax, a chord echoing into eternity. Perhaps the most spectacular feature of the Grand Canyon,
its Redwall limestone cliff, stands about half way up the chasm and is practically vertical. Its average height is 550 feet——almost exactly that of the Washington Monument. Though it is actually gray-blue limestone, the surface of the cliff has been stained to a sunset hue by iron salts washing out of the rocks. Above the Redwall come alternating layers of red sandstone and shale 1,000 feet thick, then comes the next pale-blue layer. The topmost layers are a yellowish limestone. Now, visitors to the South Rim alone may number 18,000 in a single day. Some of that number will travel by mule train down Bright Angel Trail to the canyon's floor, cross the raging river by a suspension bridge and amount to the North Rim. Though the two rims face each other across only 12 miles, it is a journey of 214 miles by car from one to the other. Nor can you visit the North Rim except in summer; some 1,200 feet higher than the South Rim, it is snow covered much of the year except in July and August. But there is no day that you may not visit the South Rim and find the sun warm on your face and the air perfumed with the incense of smoke from an Indian hearth. The Grand Canyon is an unearthly sight. No wonder an American writer and journalist said,“I came here an atheist, and departed a devout believer.”

Windmill at Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia.
The city of Williamsburg, Virginia, is one of the most popular historical attractions in the United States. Established in the 17th century, it was for a while the capital of the colony of Virginia and the site of several historical events during America's Revolutionary War. Our reporter recently visited Williamsburg for a look at its colonial past and events leading to the U.S. Independence Day celebrations.
The streets of Williamsburg look just like they did in the summer of 1781, when British soldiers occupied Williamsburg toward the end of the Revolutionary War. The British only stayed for a week, then marched out of town on July 4th, five years to the day after the American colonies had first declared their independence. Tim Suthpin is the director of historic programs at colonial Williamsburg.
"This is probably the beginning of what we call Americans, right here," said Tim Suthpin. "We started as a British colony; we became more removed, detached from that British ancestry and we became Americans right here in Williamsburg."
Three hundred fifty actors and re-enactors are creating the British military presence in town - setting up camp and harassing the colonists, to recreate the atmosphere of 200 years ago.
The annual event attracts thousands of tourists and history buffs every year. Carl Kavanagh and his family came from New Jersey for the celebrations.
"You're walking in the footsteps of George Washington here, you're seeing everything that they saw," said Carl Kavanagh. "You're experiencing the heat, the smells and the buildings. Everything about how it was two, three hundred years ago. It's a great opportunity to gather that information and enjoy it at the same time."
Colonial Williamsburg consists of 120 hectares of authentic and restored buildings and landmarks dating to the Revolutionary War and even back further - to the first British settlers who started a plantation and later built the colony. After the war, the town fell into disrepair but was rebuilt by billionaire John D. Rockefeller in the early 20th century, to preserve the atmosphere and ideals of 18th century America. Clyde Haulman is the city's mayor:
"I think a lot of people think of Williamsburg and think it's a museum," said Clyde Haulman. "Well, it is but it's a living museum. You go down the street and you participate in the revolutionary city, that's the best that a museum does, then go to the farmer's market, you'll see small town America. You have all those things here."
The three million visitors who fill the streets of Williamsburg every year are immersed not only in early American life but in the struggle of a small, new country to find its own identity.
"I think it's awesome that a place like this exists, that the children and everybody in America and throughout the world can come and see where democracy began and where it developed over the course of history and the course of time," said Carl Kavanagh.
Besides being an historic site, Williamsburg is also the home of one of America's oldest universities, the College of William and Mary. It is part of an historic triangle that includes the site of the 1607 Jamestown settlement and the Yorktown battlefield, where the Revolutionary War ended. Most importantly it's where early Americans decided to build a new society based on equality and liberty.

The graceless colossus of Buckingham Palace, popularly known as "Buck House", has served as the monarch's permanent London residence only since the accession of Victoria. Bought by George III in 1762, the building was overhauled by Nash in the late 1820s, and again by Aston Webb in time for George V's coronation in 1913, producing a palace that's about as bland as it's possible to be.
For two months of the year, the hallowed portals are grudgingly nudged open; timed tickets are sold from the tent-like box office in Green Park at the western end of The Mall. The interior, however, is a bit of an anticlimax: of the palace's 660 rooms you're permitted to see just 18, and there's little sign of life, as the Queen decamps to Scotland every summer. For the other ten months of the year there's little to do here, since the palace is closed to visitors - not that this deters the crowds who mill around the railings, and gather in some force to watch the Changing of the Guard, in which a detachment of the Queen's Foot Guards marches to appropriate martial music from St James's Palace (unless it rains, that is).
You can view a small selection of the Royal Collection - which is more than three times larger than the National Gallery's - at the Queen's Picture Gallery (daily 9.30am-4.30pm; £4), round the south side of the palace on Buckingham Palace Road. The exhibitions usually include some works by Reynolds, Gainsborough, Vermeer, Rubens, Rembrandt and Canaletto, which make up the bulk of the collection.
There's more pageantry on show at the Nash-built Royal Mews (April-Sept Tues-Thurs noon-4pm; Oct-Dec Wed only; £3.50), further along Buckingham Palace Road. The royal carriages, lined up under a glass canopy in the courtyard, are the main attraction, in particular the Gold Carriage, made for George III in 1762, smothered in 22-carat gilding and weighing four tons, its axles supporting four life-size figures.

the sheer level of energy is the most striking aspect of japan's capital city. tokyo remains a glittering example of the 'miracle' of post world war ii japan. streets are lined with tiny specialist shops and bustling restaurants, most of which stay open late into the night. close to the soaring office blocks exist pockets of another tokyo - an old wooden house, a japanese inn, an old lady in a kimono sweeping the pavement outside her home with a straw broom. more than anything else, tokyo is a place where the urgent rhythms of consumer culture collide with the quieter moments that linger from older traditions.
spring is the best time to visit tokyo, particularly as cherry blossoms begin to appear in early april and this is when the city is at its most beautiful. autumn is not a bad time to visit either, with its cool temperatures and many clear days, while winter is marked by the occasional snowfall but rarely freezing conditions. the city can be an unpleasant place during summer, when torrential downpours and mugginess combine with the crowded public transport to wear down your calm visitor's fa?ade.
the sony building, at the sukiyabashi intersection, is a must-see for all the cyberjunkies, digital-devotees, and playstation groupies. any electronic gizmo that has ever been invented is here in the sony building, as well as some yet-to-be-retailed prototypes. with most of the displays being a hands-on proposition, it's an oversized kid's arcade.
the building itself is a rather phlegmatic version of the sixties - a lot of function over form - but with eight stories of unadulterated electronic heaven who cares about the packaging.

The University of Cambridge is one of the oldest universities in the world, and one of the largest in the United Kingdom. It has a world-wide reputation for outstanding academic achievement and the high quality of research undertaken in a wide range of science and arts subjects. The University pioneers work in the understanding of disease, the creation of new materials, advances in telecommunications and research into the origins of the universe. It trains doctors, vets, architects, engineers and teachers. At all levels about half of the students at Cambridge study arts and humanities subjects, many of whom have gone on to become prominent figures in the arts, print and broadcast media. The University's achievements in the sciences can be measured by the sixty or more Nobel Prizes awarded to its members over the years.
The University is a self-governing body: the legislative authority is the Regent House, which consists of the three thousand or so members of the teaching and administrative staff of the University and Colleges who have the MA (or MA status) or a higher degree. The principal administrative body of the University is the Council, which consists mainly of members of the academic staff elected by the Regent House. The General Board of the Faculties co-ordinates the educational policy of the University and the Finance Committee of the Council supervises its financial affairs.
As Cambridge approaches its eight hundredth anniversary in 2009, it is looking to the future. The modern University is an international centre of teaching and research in a vast range of subjects: about half of the students study science or technology. Members of the University have won over sixty Nobel Prizes.
It continues to change in response to the challenges it faces. The Vice-Chancellor, for instance, is no longer a Head of College, but is a full-time administrative appointment. A Development Office and associated charitable foundation is successfully seeking funds around the world for new ventures. The 1990s have seen a major expansion of University accommodation for teaching and research. There are many major new buildings either underway or already completed, including the Law Faculty building and the Judge Institute of Management Studies, in March 1996 opened by HM The Queen.
