The Claim: Laboring in a tub of water helps relax expectant mothers, significantly relieving the pain of childbirth.
The Verdict: A review of 11 trials, encompassing 3,146 women, published by the Cochrane Collaboration, a global network of scientists and clinicians, concludes that laboring in a tub during the first stage of labor reduces the need for epidural anesthesia. But the safety of staying in a tub during the birthing stage hasn't been established -- prompting some doctors to urge caution.
Sitting in water during labor, sometimes called hydrotherapy, can promote relaxation, improve blood flow and reduce swelling, according to scientific literature. Tubs -- with or without massaging jets -- are available at many birthing centers and some hospitals. For home births, women can use a bathtub or rent a birthing tub for about $200 to $300.
Typically the water is heated to body temperature, says Jenna Shaw-Battista, director of the Nurse-Midwifery Education Program at the University of California, San Francisco. The tub is filled to cover the belly and sometimes as high as the chest, Dr. Shaw-Battista says. Clothing is optional, she adds, and many women wear a sports bra or a hospital gown.
The scientific literature supports claims that hydrotherapy offers pain relief and relaxation -- and may even shorten labor. But some clinicians draw the line at giving birth underwater.
In a joint opinion published this month, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Academy of Pediatrics, said that due to reports of newborn drownings, near drownings, and infection described in medical literature, the procedure should remain 'experimental' and be performed only in the context of clinical trials.
In theory, in a water birth the baby is brought to the surface safely before it takes its first gasp. But if a baby is experiencing distress -- for example if the umbilical cord is crimped -- it may gasp earlier and 'that's all you need to get water in the lungs or to swallow that water into the stomach,' says Tonse N.K. Raju, chief of the pregnancy and perinatology branch at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development in Bethesda, Md., and a liaison to the committee that issued the opinion. Another concern, he says, is that tub water can easily get contaminated with bacteria.
Problems are rare, Dr. Raju says. And the doctors' concerns are based not on large randomized trials but on individual case reports, which some midwives say is a flawed approach as births on land can also have complications. So far, a number of observational studies of water births in low-risk women -- including a 1999 British report of 4,032 water deliveries -- have found no higher newborn mortality than a birth out of water. In data released last week by the American Association of Birth Centers, a trade group for free-standing birth centers, there were no infant deaths in 3,998 water births conducted at 79 centers over four years. And 1.5% of babies delivered underwater needed to be transferred to a hospital for observation or treatment, compared with 2.8% delivered on land.
The data, which the association hopes to publish, reflects that centers steer women likely to have complicated deliveries away from water birth, says the association's director, Lesley Rathbun. Even if a water birth is planned, during labor the baby's heartbeat is carefully monitored and if there's any suggestion of distress, 'we're going to get the woman out of the tub' before delivery, she says.

The research, published in the Lancet medical journal, is based on health records of more than500,000 people across Europe, the US and Australia.
Scientists led by University College London warned that people who work longer hours tend to doless exercise, sit at a computer for hours at a time, and drink more than people with a betterwork-life balance.
Repeated stress may also be to be blame for greater health problems, the scientists think.
They looked at the combined result of 17 previous studies, in which 529,000 people weretracked over an average of seven years.
They found that people working 41 to 48 hours a week were 10 per cent more likely to suffer astroke than those who worked a typical 35 to 40-hour week.
People who worked 49 to 54 hours a week had a 27 per cent increased chance of suffering astroke.
And those who worked 55 or more hours were 33 per cent more likely to fall victim.
The researchers also looked at the link between hours worked and the risk of coronary heartdisease, including heart attacks and angina.
Those who worked more than 55 hours a week had a 13 per cent increased risk of heart disease, they found.
The authors wrote: 'Sudden death from overwork is often caused by stroke and is believed toresult from a repetitive triggering of the stress response.
‘Behavioural mechanisms, such as physical inactivity, might also link long working hours andstroke; a hypothesis supported by evidence of an increased risk of incident stroke in individualswho sit for long periods at work.’
Lead author Professor Mika Kivimaki, from University College London, said: ‘The pooling of allavailable studies on this topic allowed us to investigate the association between working hoursand cardiovascular disease risk with greater precision than has previously been possible.
'Health professionals should be aware that working long hours is associated with a significantlyincreased risk of stroke, and perhaps also coronary heart disease.'
Experts stressed that the study had only found a link between hours worked and heart problems -it had not proved what had actually caused each death.
But they warned people to take note of the findings.
Dr Tim Chico, consultant cardiologist at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, said: ‘For many people, reducing their working hours would be difficult or impossible, and this study does not show that itwould reduce the risk of stroke.
‘Most of us could reduce the amount of time we spend sitting down, increase our physical activityand improve our diet while working and this might be more important the more time we spend atwork.
'We should all consider how the working environment could be altered to promote healthybehaviour that will reduce strokes, irrespective of how long we work.'
Dr Mike Knapton of the British Heart Foundation, which part-funded the study, said: 'This studyhighlights to doctors that they need to pay particular attention to cardiovascular risk factors whenthey advise people who work long hours.'
Dr Shamim Quadir of the Stroke Association added: 'Working long hours can involve sitting forlong periods of time, experiencing stress and leads to less time available to look after yourself.'

Each one of us has some risk for becoming depressed. For some the chance might be remote, while for others it can be almost inevitable.
We all have our own vulnerabilities for depression, based on our life experiences, health conditions, substance use, and genetic predisposition. A person's risk for becoming depressed at some point in his or her life ranges from low to high, based upon the interaction of all of these factors.
A good general way to think of the factors that lead to depression is with the two-hit hypothesis. This model suggests that people become depressed when the effects of their genetic composition—which itself puts them somewhere on a scale of low-to-high likelihood of eventually developing depression—combine with stressful life experiences.
Even those individuals with a low genetic tendency for depression can become depressed when they experience extreme stress. On the other hand, people with strong genetic predispositions may become depressed without experiencing much stress. Naturally, the people with both high stress and strong genetic predispositions are the most likely to have a depressive disorder.
While the two-hit hypothesis is useful conceptually, making predictions for particular individuals is still a challenge. For example, because of their psychological characteristics, people respond to stress in different ways. Plus, the genetics of depression is not as simple as something like eye color.

How can stress early in life affect mood and brain functioning later on? There are several theoretical possibilities. One is that stress hormones influence the development of key areas of the brain related to mood and emotions.
Is there a depression gene?
The genetics of depression are complex and not yet fully understood. A single depression gene locus has not been found; rather, several sections of the genome have been identified that are associated with a higher probability of having depression.
You are at higher risk for depression if ...
* you have had significant difficulty due to depression in the past
* depression runs in your family, especially in close blood relatives
* you have been exposed to chronic stressful circumstances
If you think that you are at high risk for depression, you should be alert for early signs of any symptoms of a mood disorder and you should then talk with your mental health specialist about possible treatments. Early treatment can have both short- and long-term benefits.
Of course, if you already have severe depressive symptoms, then seek help right away. If you are feeling suicidal, talk with someone about it immediately and consult your doctor, or else get to an emergency room fast.
Consider, too, the risks of your family and friends. You might play an important role in helping them get early treatment to prevent worse symptoms in the future.

1.Once upon a time there was a child ready to be born.
One day the child asked God,"They tell me you are going to send me to earth tomorrow but how am I going to live there being so small and helpless?"
God replied,"Among the may angels, I have chosen one for you.
She will be waiting for you and will take care of you."
2."But,said the child,"tell me here in Heaven I don't do anything else but sing and smile. That's what I need to be happy!"
God said,"Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you every day.
And you will feel your angel's love and be happy."
3."And, said the child,"how am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me, if I don't know the language that men talk?"
"That's easy",said God,"Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words you will ever hear, and with much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to speak."
4.The child looked up at God saying,"And what am I going to do when I want to talk to you?"
God smiled at the child saying,"Your angel will place your hands together and will teache you how to pray."
5. The child said ,"I've heard on earth there are bad men.Who will protect me?"
God put his arm around the child, saying ,"Your angel will defend you-even if it means risking life!"
6. The child looked sad saying,"But I will always be sad because I will not see you anymore."
God hugged the child "Your angel will always talk to you about me and will teach you the way to comme back to me,even though I will always be next to you."
7.At that moment there was much peace in Heaven, but voices from earth could already be heard.
8.The child,in a hurry,asked softly,"Oh God,if I am about to leave now please tell me my angel's name!"
God repiled,"Your angle's name is of no importance ......you will simply call her MOMMY!"

China’s emerging baby boom, driven by more-relaxed government policies and the year of the dragon, is fertile ground for both domestic and overseas companies.
The world’s second-largest economy will experience a population boom from 2005 to 2020 and the country’s birth rate will peak in 2016, the National Bureau of Statistics predicts. The Chinese population is expected to reach 1.388 billion by 2020 from 1.334 billion in 2009, according to the United Nations.

U.S. Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush said his use of the term "anchor babies" to describe U.S.-born children of non-citizen parents was taken out of context and not derogatory, saying he was referring solely to activity he views as fraudulent.
The U.S. Constitution grants citizenship to any child born on U.S. soil, regardless of parentage. Immigration critics sometimes use "anchor babies" to describe U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants, usually from Latin America.

An explosion ripped through a warehouse storing "dangerous goods" in north China's Tianjin City late Wednesday night.
The first explosion at about 23:30 (15:30 GMT) on Wednesday was followed by another seconds later. Shockwaves were felt several kilometres away.
The China Earthquake Networks Centre said the magnitude of the first explosion was the equivalent of detonating three tons of TNT, while the second was the equivalent of 21 tons of the explosive.
英语中最常用来表示“爆炸”的名词是explosion和blast,如果要表达“引爆炸弹”则可以用detonate a bomb, set off a bomb或者ignite a bomb表示。

The first baby hatch in east China's Zhejiang Province received its first baby on May 31, a child named Yang Yang, who is not yet a year old and is suffering from diseases.
A baby hatch allows people to safely and anonymously abandon an infant. It usually consists of an incubator, a delayed alarm device, an air conditioner and a baby bed. A person can place the baby in the hatch, press the alarm button and leave. Welfare staff will retrieve the baby five to ten minutes later.
When will the baby chickens hatch out?(小鸡什么时候孵出来?)
