In 2012 I had the worst year of my life.
I worked in a finance job that I hated and I lived in a concrete jungle city with little greenery. I occupied my time with meaningless relationships and spent copious quantities of money on superficialities. I was searching for happiness and had no idea where to find it.
Then I fell ill with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and became virtually bed bound. I had to quit my job and subsequently was left with no income. I lived with my boyfriend of then only 3 months who financially supported me and our relationship was put under great pressure. I eventually regained my physical health, but not long after that I got a call from my family at home to say that my father’s cancer had fiercely progressed and that he had been admitted to a hospice.
I left the city and I went home to be with him.
He died 6 months later.
My father was a complete inspiration to me. He was always so strong that, for a minute after he drew his last breath, I honestly thought he would come back to life. I couldn’t believe I would never again cuddle into his big warm chest and feel safe no matter what.
The grief that followed was intense for all of us 5 children and our mother, but we had each other.
But my oldest sister at that time complained of a bad back. It got so bad after 2 months that she too was admitted to hospital.
They discovered that she had highly advanced cancer in her bones and that there was nothing that they could do.
She died 1 month later.
I could never put into words the loss of my sister in my life.
She was a walking, talking angel and my favourite person in the whole world. If someone could have asked me the worst thing that could ever happen, it would have been losing her.
She was my soul-mate and I never thought I would journey this lifetime without her.
The Moment Of Deliberate Choice
The shock and extreme heart break brought me to my knees. The pain was so great and my world just looked desolate. I had no real home, no money, no job, and no friends that cared. Not one person had even sent me a sympathy card for my loss.
I made an attempt of my own life and I ended up in hospital.
I remember lying in the hospital bed, looking up at the ceiling and seeing my sister’s beautiful face. She stayed with me all night long.
I realised during that night that I had a choice. I could choose to end my life or I could choose to live it.
I looked in my sister’s eyes and I made a decision not to go with her just yet. That I would stay and complete my journey here.
I also made the decision that, I wouldn’t just live any life. I would live the life that I absolutely LOVE and nothing less.
In that moment, the clarity that descended around me was like a light shining in a dark room for the first time. As if the earth’s plates had shifted under my feet and everything suddenly looked real for the first time.

The Guardian 《
The Daily Telegraph 《
The New York Times 《
The Washington Post 《
Daily Mail 《

一、配以阅读来强化单词记忆;
六级已过人群,适合选择一些相对高端点的资料;

US President Barack Obama launched his widely expected new job plan Thursday night at a joint session of the Congress to stimulate recovery and strengthen the country's struggling employment situation.
The efforts to create jobs is "urgent" and the Congress should pass the job plan immediately, Obama said.
The 447-billion-dollar plan, which is called the American Jobs Act, is the third major stimulus package.

When I was growing up, I had an old neighbornamed Dr. Gibbs. He didn't look like any doctor I'dever known. He never yelled at us for playing in hisyard. I remember him as someone who was a lotnicer than circumstances warranted.
When Dr. Gibbs wasn't saving lives, he was plantingtrees. His house sat on ten acres, and his life's goalwas to make it a forest.
The good doctor had some interesting theoriesconcerning plant husbandry. He came from the “No pain, no gain” school of horticulture. Henever watered his new trees, which flew in the face of conventional wisdom. Once I asked why.He said that watering plants spoiled them, and that if you water them, each successive treegeneration will grow weaker and weaker. So you have to make things rough for them and weedout the weenie trees early on.
He talked about how watering trees made for shallow roots, and how trees that weren'twatered had to grow deep roots in search of moisture. I took him to mean that deep rootswere to be treasured.
So he never watered his trees. He'd plant an oak and, instead of watering it every morning,he'd beat it with a rolled-up newspaper. Smack! Slap! Pow! I asked him why he did that, and hesaid it was to get the tree's attention.
Dr. Gibbs went to glory a couple of years after I left home. Every now and again, I walked byhis house and looked at the trees that I'd watched him plant some twenty-five years ago. They're granite strong now. Big and robust. Those trees wake up in the morning and beattheir chests and drink their coffee black.
I planted a couple of trees a few years back. Carried water to them for a solid summer. Sprayedthem. Prayed over them. The whole nine yards. Two years of coddling has resulted in trees thatexpect to be waited on hand and foot. Whenever a cold wind blows in, they tremble andchatter their branches. Sissy trees.
Funny things about those trees of Dr. Gibbs'. Adversity and deprivation seemed to benefitthem in ways comfort and ease never could.
Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons. I stand over them and watch theirlittle bodies, the rising and falling of life within. I often pray for them. Mostly I pray that theirlives will be easy. But lately I've been thinking that it's time to change my prayer.
This change has to do with the inevitability of cold winds that hit us at the core. I know mychildren are going to encounter hardship, and I'm praying they won't be naive. There'salways a cold wind blowing somewhere.
So I'm changing my prayer. Because life is tough, whether we want it to be or not. Too manytimes we pray for ease, but that's a prayer seldom met. What we need to do is pray for rootsthat reach deep into the Eternal, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we won't be sweptasunder.

Jerry was the kind of guy you love to hate. He wasalways in a good mood and always had somethingpositive to say. When someone would ask him howhe was doing, he would reply, "If I were any better, Iwould be twins!"
He was a unique manager because he hadseveral waiters who had followed him around fromrestaurant to restaurant. The reason the waitersfollowed Jerry was because of his attitude. He was anatural motivator. If an employee was having a badday, Jerry was there telling the employee how tolook on the positive side of the situation.
Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to Jerry and asked him, "I don"t get it! You can"t be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?"
Jerry replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, "Jerry, you have two choicestoday. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood." I chooseto be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or I canchoose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to mecomplaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of life.I choose the positive side of life."
"Yeah, right, it"s not that easy," I protested.
"Yes, it is," Jerry said. "Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, everysituation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people willaffect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It"s yourchoice how you live life."
I reflected on what Jerry said. Soon thereafter, I left the restaurant industry to start myown business. We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about lifeinstead of reacting to it.
Several years later, I heard that Jerry did something you are never supposed to do in arestaurant business: he left the back door open one morning and was held up at gunpoint bythree armed robbers. While trying to open the safe(保险柜), his hand, shaking fromnervousness, slipped off (忘记,遗漏)the combination (开启号码锁的号码组合)。 The robberspanicked and shot him.
Luckily, Jerry was found relatively quickly and rushed to the local trauma (创伤,外伤)center. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, Jerry was released from thehospital with fragments of the bullets still in his body.
I saw Jerry about six months after the accident. When I asked him how he was, hereplied, "If I were any better, I"d be twins. Wanna see my scars(伤疤)?" I declined to see hiswounds, but did ask him what had gone through his mind as the robbery took place.
"The first thing that went through my mind was that I should have locked the backdoor," Jerry replied. "Then, as I lay on the floor, I remembered that I had two choices: I couldchoose to live, or I could choose to die. I chose to live."
"Weren"t you scared? Did you lose consciousness?" I asked.
Jerry continued, "The paramedics (护理人员)were great. They kept telling me I was goingto be fine. But when they wheeled me into the emergency room and I saw the expressions onthe faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read, "He"s a deadman." "I knew I needed to take action."
"What did you do?" I asked.
"Well, there was a big, burly (魁梧的,结实的)nurse shouting questions at me," saidJerry.
"She asked if I was allergic (过敏的)to anything. "Yes," I replied. The doctors andnurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, "Bullets!"
Over their laughter, I told them. "I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead."
Jerry lived thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude. Ilearned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully.
Attitude, after all, is everything.

Michael is the kind of guy you love to hate. He isalways in a good mood and always has somethingpositive to say. When someone would ask him howhe was doing, he would reply, "If I were any better,I’d be twins!” He was a natural motivator.
If an employee was having a bad day, Michael wasthere telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation. Seeing this stylereally made me curious, so one day I went up to Michael and asked him, "I don' t get it. Youcan' t be positive all the time. How do you do it?"
Michael replied, each morning I wake up and say to myself 'Mike, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood.' I choose to bein a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or choose tolearn from it. I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining I canchoose to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of life. I choose thepositive side of life."
"Yeah, right. It isn't that easy." I protested.
"Yes it is, " Michael said. "Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, everysituation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people willaffect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line is: It's yourchoice how you live life. " I reflected on what Michael said.
Soon thereafter, I left the big enterprise that I had worked in for years to start my ownbusiness. We lost touch, but I often though about him when I made a choice about life insteadof reacting to it. Several years later, I heard Michael was involved in a serious accident, falling off60 feet from a communications tower.
After l8 hours of surgery, and weeks of intensive care, Michael was released from the hospitalwith rods placed in his back. I saw Michael about six months after the accident. When I askedhim how he was, he replied, "If I were any better, I’d be twins. Wanna see my scars?" Ideclined to see his wounds, but did ask him what had gone through his mind as the accidenttook place.
"The first thing that went through my mind was the well being of my soon-to-born daughter,"Michael replied. "Then, as I lay on the ground, remembered I had two choices: I could choose tolive or I could choose to die. I chose to live." "Weren’t you scared? Did you loseconsciousness?" I asked. Michael continued, "... the paramedics were great. They kept tellingme I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the operation room and I saw theexpressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, l read'He's a dead man.' The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. Itook a deep breath and yelled", ‘Gravity’” Over their laughter, I told them, 'I'm choosing to live.Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead'."
Michael lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude. I1eamed from him that every day we have a choice to live fully. Attitude is everything.

In the doorway of my home, I looked closely at theface of my 23-year-old son, Daniel, his backpack byhis side. We were saying good-bye. In a few hourshe would be flying to France. He would be stayingthere for at least a year to learn another languageand experience life in a different country.
It was a transitional time in Daniel's life, a passage,a step from college into the adult world. I wanted toleave him some words that would have somemeaning, some significance beyond the moment.
But nothing came from my lips. No sound broke the stillness of my beachside home. Outside, Icould hear the shrill cries of sea gulls as they circled the ever changing surf on Long Island.Inside, I stood frozen and quiet, looking into the searching eyes of my son.
What made it more difficult was that I knew this was not the first time I had let such a momentpass. When Daniel was five, I took him to the school-bus stop on his first day of kindergarten. Ifelt the tension in his hand holding mine as the bus turned the corner. I saw colour flush hischeeks as the bus pulled up. He looked at me-as he did now.
What is it going to be like, Dad? Can I do it? Will I be okay? And then he walked up the steps ofthe bus and disappeared inside. And the bus drove away. And I had said nothing.
A decade or so later, a similar scene played itself out. With his mother, I drove him to Williamand Mary College in Virginia. His first night, he went out with his new schoolmates, and when hemet us the next morning, he was sick. He was coming down with mononucleosis, but we couldnot know that then. We thought he had a hangover.
In his room, Dan lay stretched out on his bed as I started to leave for the trip home. I tried tothink of something to say to give him courage and confidence as he started this new phase oflife.
Again, words failed me. I mumbled something like, "Hope you feel better Dan." And I left.
Now, as I stood before him, I thought of those lost opportunities. How many times have we alllet such moments pass? A boy graduates from school, a daughter gets married. We go throughthe motions of the ceremony, but we don't seek out our children and find a quiet moment totell them what they have meant to us. Or what they might expect to face in the years ahead.
How fast the years had passed. Daniel was born in New Orleans, LA., in 1962, slow to walk andtalk, and small of stature. He was the tiniest in his class, but he developed a warm, outgoingnature and was popular with his peers. He was coordinated and agile, and he became adept insports.
Baseball gave him his earliest challenge. He was an outstanding pitcher in Little League, andeventually, as a senior in high school, made the varsity, winning half the team's games with arecord of five wins and two losses. At graduation, the coach named Daniel the team's mostvaluable player.
His finest hour, though, came at a school science fair. He entered an exhibit showing how thecirculatory system works. It was primitive and crude, especially compared to the fancy, computerized, blinking-light models entered by other students. My wife, Sara, feltembarrassed for him.
It turned out that the other kids had not done their own work-their parents had made theirexhibits. As the judges went on their rounds, they found that these other kids couldn't answertheir questions. Daniel answered every one. When the judges awarded the Albert EinsteinPlaque for the best exhibit, they gave it to him.
By the time Daniel left for college he stood six feet tall and weighed 170 pounds. He wasmuscular and in superb condition, but he never pitched another inning, having given upbaseball for English literature. I was sorry that he would not develop his athletic talent, butproud that he had made such a mature decision.
One day I told Daniel that the great failing in my life had been that I didn't take a year or two offto travel when I finished college. This is the best way, to my way of thinking, to broadenoneself and develop a larger perspective on life. Once I had married and begun working, Ifound that the dream of living in another culture had vanished.
Daniel thought about this. His friends said that he would be insane to put his career on hold. But he decided it wasn't so crazy. After graduation, he worked as a waiter at college, a bikemessenger and a house painter. With the money he earned, he had enough to go to Paris.
The night before he was to leave, I tossed in bed. I was trying to figure out something to say.Nothing came to mind. Maybe, I thought, it wasn't necessary to say anything.
What does it matter in the course of a life-time if a father never tells a son what he really thinksof him? But as I stood before Daniel, I knew that it does matter. My father and I loved eachother. Yet, I always regretted never hearing him put his feelings into words and never havingthe memory of that moment. Now, I could feel my palms sweat and my throat tighten. Why isit so hard to tell a son something from the heart? My mouth turned dry, and I knew I would beable to get out only a few words clearly.
“Daniel," I said, "if I could have picked, I would have picked you."
That's all I could say. I wasn't sure he understood what I meant. Then he came toward me andthrew his arms around me. For a moment, the world and all its people vanished, and there wasjust Daniel and me in our home by the sea.
He was saying something, but my eyes misted over, and I couldn't understand what he wassaying. All I was aware of was the stubble on his chin as his face pressed against mine. Andthen, the moment ended. I went to work, and Daniel left a few hours later with his girlfriend.
That was seven weeks ago, and I think about him when I walk along the beach on weekends.Thousands of miles away, somewhere out past the ocean waves breaking on the desertedshore, he might be scurrying across Boulevard Saint Germain, strolling through a mustyhallway of the Louvre, bending an elbow in a Left Bank café.
What I had said to Daniel was clumsy and trite. It was nothing. And yet, it was everything.

All of us ought to be able to brace ourselves for thepredictable challenges and setbacks that crop upeveryday. If we expect that life won’t be perfect, we’llbe able to avoid that impulse to quit. But even ifyouare strong enough to persist the obstacle course of lifeand work, sometimes you will encounter an adverseevent that will completely knock you on your back.
Whether it’s a financial loss, the loss of respect of your peers or loved ones, or some othertraumatic event in your life these major setbacks leave you doubting yourself and wondering if thingscan ever changefor the better again.
Adversity happens to all of us, and it happens all the time. Some form of major adversity is eithergoing to be there or it’s lying in wait just around the corner. To ignore adversity is to succumb tothe ultimate self-delusion.
But you must recognize that history is full of examples of men and women who achieved greatnessdespite facing hurdles so steep that easily could have crashed their spirit and left them lying in thedust. Moses was a stutterer, yet he was called on to be the voice of God. Abraham Lincoln overcomesa difficult childhood, depression, the death of two sons, and constant ridicule during the Civil Warto become arguably our greatest president ever. Helen Keller made an impact on the world despitebeing deaf, dumb, and blind from an early age. Franklin Roosevelt had polio.
There are endless examples. These were people who not only looked adversity in the face butlearned valuable lessons about overcoming difficult circumstances and were able to move ahead.

CEIBT(Certificate in English for International Business and Trade)。

It is traditionally a staple of Italian cuisine butin modern cookeryis used across the globe. Now thepopularity of pasta has been confirmed in asurvey which places it as the world's favourite foodahead of meat, rice and pizza.
A global survey by Oxfam saw pasta narrowlytop the list thanks to its growing popularity in theAmericas, Asia, Africa and Europe. Oxfam said thesurvey of eating habits in 17 countries shows how Western diets have spread across theworld。
Although national dishes are still popular - such as paellain Spain and schnitzel in Germany- pizza and pasta are now the favourite foods of many, with more than half of the countries(nine out of 17) listing one or both in their top three foods。
But as a food with around 600 different varieties including popular exports like penne andtagliatelle, pasta reigns supreme thanks to its versatilityand specialities。
Pasta ranked as the second most popular food in the UK, behind steak and ahead ofchicken. Curry, thought by many to be one of the most popular cuisines in Britain, rankedfourth。
The survey also highlighted the worldwide popularity for Asian food - Chinese was thesecond-most popular in Mexico while sushi made the top ten in five countries including theUSA and South Africa。
There were some surprising results as well, with sweet-toothed Australia naming chocolateas its favourite food。
And despite its worldwide dominancein the fast food market for decades, McDonald's rankeda lowly 113 in the list. Its rival KFC did not fare much better, coming in at 107.
The opinion poll also revealed that the cost of food is a worldwide worry with two thirdssaying it is one of their top food concerns. More than half of the people questioned globally (54per cent) said they are not eating the same food they did two years ago, with two fifths (39 percent) of those saying it was because food was becoming more expensive。
The news comes despite debate as to whether pasta is good for you at all, with conflictingdiet advice suggesting it can help you both lose weight or pile on the pounds。
Pasta is widely thought to have originated from Arab invaders who conquered Sicily in theeight century fed by slow-release carbohydrates. The food they ate which originated from driednoodle was made from durum wheat - the stapleingredient which must now be used in all driedpasta by Italian law。
