Todd: OK, Sarah, how long have you been in Japan?
Sarah: I've been in Japan for two months. I came in April.
Todd: Again, when did you come to Japan?
Sarah: Two months ago.
Todd: OK, and what do you think about Japan?
Sarah: It's a very interesting country. I expected a very big culture shock when I first came here because I've never been to Asia. I've always taught in Europe and I've been to America but they were all places that weren't particularly different from England, like Japan, but I didn't have any culture shock and I don't know if it's just because I was in an environment with other English speaking people and I was in a company where it's very secure and safe so there was not need to have that kind of shock but I think the differences here are just unbelievable. It's very difficult to explain it to somebody who's never been to Japan before, so talking on the phone about being here, talking to someone back in England is very difficult to explain to them how different it is here.
Todd: Yeah, what do you think about the food?
Sarah: I like the food because I like fish so I was lucky, so the food, I've tried some different things, tried to be adventurous.
Todd: And the people?
Sarah: Ah, the people are nice, very nice, first quite difficult to, when teaching, very very different than teaching Europeans, particularly the Austrian people from my experience are very loud and forthcoming, and at first they were very, very quite, and we've seen quite a difference now that they've got to know us, and they've opened up quite a lot and it's easier, but generally I find the people very kind in the streets. When we meet people they're always very helpful, very kind.
Todd: Yeah, I think Japanese people are, that's one of their best traits. Yeah, they're very, very sweet. OK, what do you think about the weather?
Sarah: Yeah, very changeable. I was quite surprised. Most people think that in England the weather is very, very bad but here it's, the rain is just unbelievable. I've never seen rain like this before. It's just very, very changeable and it can be hot for a minute and then the next day it's quite cold.
Todd: And now, it's very loud. You live by the train tracks. What do you think of the trains?
Sarah: The service, or?
Todd: Or just overall? Do you like the trains? Do you like living by the train?
Sarah: I'm not, I don't think about living by the trains, but I think the trains are very, they're always on time, always very frequent, very good service but I have never seen so many people get on a train before.
Todd: Yeah, they are very crowded.

March 3 is Hina Matsuri (Doll Festival or Girls' Festival), when people pray for the happiness and healthy growth of girls. Families with young daughters mark this day by setting up a display of dolls inside the house.
The dolls wear costumes of the imperial court during the Heian period(平安时代)(794-1192) and are placed on a tiered platform covered with red felt(毡). The size of the dolls and number of steps vary, but usually the displays are of five or seven layers; single-tiered decorations with one male and one female doll are also common.
The top tier is reserved for the emperor and the empress. A miniature gilded(镀金的)folding screen(屏风)is placed behind them, just like the real Imperial throne of the ancient court.
On the second tier are three ladies-in-waiting, and on the third are five male court musicians. Ministers sit on either side of trays of food on the fourth step, and the fifth row features guards flanked by an orange tree to the left and a cherry tree to the right.
The practice(惯例)of displaying these dolls on the third day of the third month on the traditional Japanese calendar began during the Edo period (1603-1868). It started as a way of warding off(避开)evil spirits, with the dolls acting as a charm. Even today, people in some parts of the country release paper dolls into rivers after the festival, praying that the dolls take people's place in carrying away sickness and bad fortune.
Most families take their beautiful collection of dolls out of the closet around mid-February and put it away again as soon as Hina Matsuri is over. This is because of an old superstition that families that are slow in putting back the dolls have trouble marrying off their daughters.

IN THIS ARTICLE: Japanese students seem to belosing patience with work ... (and) prefer easy jobswithout heavy responsibility.
[1]Japan's post-World War II value system ofdiligence, cooperation, and hard work is changing. Recent surveys show that Japanese youthhave become a "Me Generation" that rejects traditional values.
[2] "Around 1980 many Japanese, especially young people, abandoned the values of economicsuccess and began searching for new sets of values to bring them happiness," writessociologist Yasuhiro Yoshizaki in Comparative Civilizations Review. Japanese youth are placingmore importance on the individual's pursuit of happiness and less on the values of work, family, and society.
[3] Japanese students seem to be losing patience with work, unlike their counterparts in theUnited States and Korea. In a 1993 survey of college students in the three countries, only 10%of the Japanese regarded work as a primary value, compared with 47% of their Koreancounterparts and 27% of American students. A greater proportion of Japanese aged 18 to 24also preferred easy jobs without heavy responsibility.
[4] Concern for family values is waning among younger Japanese as they pursue an inner worldof private satisfaction. Data collected by the Japanese government in 1993 shows that only2304 of Japanese youth are thinking about supporting their aged parents, in contrast to 63%of young Americans. It appears that many younger-generation Japanese are losing both respectfor their parents and a sense of responsibility to the family. Author Yoshizaki attributes thechange to Japanese parents' over-indulgence of their children, material affluence, andgrowing concern for private matters.
[5] The shift toward individualism among Japanese is most pronounced among the veryyoung. According to 1991 data from the Seimei Hoken Bunka Center of Japan, 50% of Japaneseyouth aged 16 to 19 can be labeled "self-centered", compared with 33% among those aged 25to 29 To earn the self-centered label, the young people responded positively to such ideas as "Iwould like to make decisions without considering traditional values" and "I don't want to doanything I can't enjoy doing".
[6] Diminishing social responsibility, according to Yoshizaki, is tied to the growing interest inpleasure and personal satisfaction. A study comparing society-conscious youth from 1977 to1990 found that the Japanese had slipped far behind American and Australian students. Only 11 % of Japanese aged 18 to 24 said they get personal satisfaction in doing something on behalfof society, according to 1993 data from the Japanese government, while four limes as manyAmericans said 50.
[7] Yoshizaki concludes that the entire value system of Japanese youth is undergoing majortransformation, but the younger generation has not yet found a new organized value systemto replace the old.

Fifty Japanese graduates opted to gamble with their job prospects at a mahjong tournament set up by recruiters looking for a different way to find the next high flyer.
Held in a crammed mahjong outlet in downtown Tokyo, prospects competed against each other on Friday (June 24) to gain the chance to face recruiters from six companies in the fitness, education, technology and real estate sectors.
"Mahjong is a very strategic game, so I think people who are good at it would be good at marketing. This is a new approach and I find it really interesting," candidate Tomoko Hasegawa, who is aspiring to become a designer, told Reuters.
Mahjong, which originated in China, is similar to the western card game, rummy, and players in Japan said the tile game required skill, strategy, calculation and a degree of chance.
Organisers said the recruiting tournaments began in 2012 and had gained popularity, mostly among male students, and also with hirers, who say the game revealed more about the candidates than just long pages of resumes.
On Friday, eight students advanced to the next round of the selection process.
