Hello, Jacob, how are you doing?
Hi, Susan! I`m fine. I heard you`ve been to many places in China during the past year.
Yes, I have. I love traveling.
Which do you prefer ? Going on a package tour with a tour agency or going on your own-a "Do-It-Yourself" tour?
When I first came to China, I usually took package tours but now I`ve found Do-It-Yourself tours are more interesting.
Yes, they are. I like traveling independently. There`s not so much freedom in a package tour.
Exactly. What I really don`t like in a package tour is that the tour buses stop at tourist stores for a certain time and we are forced to spend lots of time shopping even if we have little interest in jade, pearls or paintings.
Yes, another disadvantage is that the tourists have to follow exactly the travel agency`s schedule, but in a Do-It-Yourself tour they can select their own itinerary.
And in a package tour, I always have to hurry up to follow the tour guide and stand next to him to hear what he says. I can`t stay longer at those places I like and take more pictures.
That`s another reason why I prefer Do-It-Yourself option. I can travel at my own pace.
And besides that, it`s great to select your own travel mates.
You`re right. Traveling with friends or family is better than going with strangers.
I`m planning to drive myself to the countryside in the weekend. Would you like to come?
I`d love to, but I`ve already promised to go backpacking with my classmates.
That`s all right. Maybe I can ask Lisa. She loves "Do-It-Yourself" tours, too.
Have a nice weekend!
Thanks. The same to you!

Jess: So, Tom, I was reading in the newspaper this morning, and I noticed a story which saidthat Tokyo and Osaka are now the most expensive cities to live in. I remember you told me youused to live in Tokyo. Was that your experience of living there?
Tom: That's right. Tokyo was really expensive. I am so pleased that now I live in Bangkok.Living here is fantastic. My apartment — I have this lovely beautiful big apartment and therent is a good deal. Thai food is famous all over the world and actually when you come toThailand, you realize how cheap the food is and how available it is. You can buy food — everykind of food from any shop or restaurant — even on the street. They have street stalls wherepeople cooking. They have people walking up and down the street pushing carts full of food andit's all really cheap and delicious. I like to go shopping in Bangkok. There's a lot of clothes andshoes and bags. The prices are really low and it's this lovely feeling being able to walk aroundand afford things. Did you know in Tokyo the most surprising expensive thing was getting a haircut. I don't go much for expensive hair cuts and it used to kill me how much I had to pay justto get someone to chop off my scruffy locks. I know you've lived in Europe mostly. What wasyour experience? What was the most expensive place in Europe?
Jess: Well, I've lived in three European cities: Budapest, Madrid and Paris and of the three Pariswas definitely the most expensive. The things that stands out in my mind as being the mostexpensive were beauty services. Things like hair cuts, hair coloring, facials, waxing. I actuallyhad to save and budget every month to make sure I was able to afford in Paris the the things Iwas used to getting without thinking about back home in Britain, but not every thing wasexpensive there. Beauty services were and rent was but the wine, brilliant French wine, wasreally cheap and there was a huge variety, so in that way, I guess it balanced itself out.

Todd: So Greg in the last one we were talking about minimum wage, and this is one of thetopics in your book and it's about income disparity. One of the chapters is about incomedisparity. Now the opposite would be should there the a salary cap, which would mean thatbasically you could only earn so much, like let's say you can only earn five million dollars, tenmillion dollars. Nobody could earn more than that. What do you think about that concept?
Greg: I personally agree with a salary cap. I'm not sure how much it should be, but definitelythe discrepancy in wages is way to great. There's too many people who have to ... a husbandand a wife work hard forty hours or more, both of them. They're barely, barely getting by, andthen you got all these other people who are just buying Rolls-Royce cars and Mercedes, andcountry clubs and it's just not fair.
Todd: But, well, for one, though I mean, Mercedes and Rolls-Royce and those are products thatprovide jobs, so I would argue with that. Actually, as you can probably tell, I'm against theidea mainly because, you know, I think that hurts innovation. You know, you look at peoplelike the CEO of a very powerful internet company or software company, and you know, takegoogle for example, I'm sure that they make more than ten million, but they're service is usedso much around the world, that they should get that money, and if people couldn't ... hang on... if people couldn't get ... couldn't earn that salary then maybe they wouldn't have the samemotivation and drive to be successful and that people would lose out as a result.
Greg: I think that there's not proof to say that these people are making these products becausethey're making such tremendous amounts of money. What came first: the product and thenthey got the money in most cases. There's ... these people could be ... society can have allsorts of wonderful products and still have a fair income system, and I have nothing againstpeople becoming rich or making a good salary, a very good salary, but not such an incrediblegap. You have executives of some major international corporations that are making more moneythan millions of people in the world make combined. The opposite side of not having a cap isthat you have people who are making too little, and those people are also working hard. Thosepeople deserve validation. Those people deserve a good life standard which millions of peopleacross the world are not having.
Todd: Well, I think ... well, I agree with you about that. I agree with you about that. Thatthere's people who work hard and that they're under compensated, but ... and they're a lot ofpeople that get grossly overpaid but I think that's just a problem of management and that insome cases so people do deserve millions and millions, perhaps billions of dollars if they havereally contributed to the product or the outcome. So, basically we're gonna disagree on thisone.
Greg: Yeah.

Todd: Ooh, that's a tough job.
Roe: It was rough, really. It was really rough.
Todd: That's a lot of rejection, every day. No, no, no
Roe: I know, I mean if you think about it, that's natural though, I mean 5 million yen. and I can't really show the place, cause I can't take the person to the place. all I can do is show the picture and speak and that was right after the bubble economy bursted, so nobody had really, nobody had money, so.
Todd: Wow, man so were you depressed? Were you sad?
Roe: It was very interesting. It was hard to motivate myself. The people would call the police, and call me like a robber Yeah, yeah, cause I had to like open the gate and run to the door and stick my leg so that they won't shut the door.
Todd: Seriously.
Roe: Yeah, that's how you do it. Door to door sells.
Todd: Wow, that's, that's a tough job. I don't think I could do a job, what's your job now? What do you do now?
Roe: I am, I work for Yokohama city and I am in a place called Yokohama Convention Bureau. It's a city job.
Todd: OK, so the Yokohama Convention Bureau. OK, so you deal with foreigners, naturally cause it's in English.
Roe: And travellers and visitors and what have you.
Todd: Do you like your job now?
Roe: Interesting! Like I said I meet talk to about over 2,000 people a day, so it's kind of tiring though.
Todd: Wow, 2,000 people a day.
Roe: About 200 people an hour. My office is at the station. Yokohama station. Right out of the gate of the JR, so people are going to stop by.
Todd: You, that's a lot of talking. You must be tired of talking.
Roe: I am tired.
