The final pitfall is by far the most dangerous, because it's so easy to miss. When your vision becomes a reality, you arestill a failure if you cannot remember your humble beginnings or recognize the contributions of those who helped you along the way. 自满
Without passion, even the most compelling vision will wither on the vine. Without passion, your energy and enthusiasm will flag when you encounter inevitable obstacles. Make yourpassion into an almost physical characteristic of your personality, an inexorable force thatkeeps you engaged every moment of every workday, bringing you one step closer to themeasure of success that you desire.

1. Timidity
Every path to success begins with a great idea. There's only one problem: Great ideas are a dime a dozen. What really matters when it comes to becoming a success is not having the idea but having the courage to transform that idea into reality. This usually means a risk of losing the security of a regular job and risking a steady paycheck. Only the brave ever overcome this first of the pitfalls.
2. Laziness
Even with a great idea and the courage to pursue it, your efforts will be for naught unless you're willing to take massive action. Write down your goals and (more important) the action steps you'll take to pursue those goals. Post your vision and plan in your bedroom, bathroom, office. Share it with others, so they'll hold you accountable for delivering on your plan. Make yourself accountable and become the master of your destiny.
3. Complacency
自满
Without passion, even the most compelling vision will wither on the vine. Without passion, your energy and enthusiasm will flag when you encounter inevitable obstacles. Make your passion into an almost physical characteristic of your personality, an inexorable force that keeps you engaged every moment of every workday, bringing you one step closer to the measure of success that you desire.
4. Distraction
分心
The modern world clamors for your attention in ever-louder ways, a deluge that can distract you from your course. It takes self-discipline to persevere amidst the noise and haste, to assert your willpower over casual desires and instincts. Channel your emotions, behavior, and desires toward obtaining the reward of success. Remember: Living a life of self-discipline is less painful in the long run than regretting “what might have been.”
5. Doubt
Once you've made a decision, doubt is a worm that eats away at your ability to succeed. Life and work can be hard and even cruel. Remember, the race is not for the swift but rather those who persevere. Rather than allowing doubt to seep in and poison your process, you owe it to yourself to remain confident in your vision and your plan. Adapt as needed along the way, but always know that success will ultimately be yours.
6. Disconnection
孤立
The old sayings “no man is an island” and “there's strength in numbers” may sound corny, but that doesn't make them any less true. Even with self-discipline, in the long run, you'll need contact with kindred spirits and mentors. Meeting regularly can be a great boost to your morale and provide new perspectives on your approach. The Internet makes it extraordinarily easy to find a coach, mentor, or mastermind group that can provide the emotional support, experience, and wisdom to help turn your vision into reality.
7. Dishonesty
As you begin to be successful, you'll be tempted to lie, exaggerate, and deceive in order to move your agenda forward. However, taking the easy way of dishonesty has a tendency to sneak back up on you. In the end, it causes far more problems than taking the risk of telling the truth. True success comes when you are a person of your word, when you have a pure conscience, and when you have not cheated others on your way to the top.
8. Ingratitude
The final pitfall is by far the most dangerous, because it's so easy to miss. When your vision becomes a reality, you are still a failure if you cannot remember your humble beginnings or recognize the contributions of those who helped you along the way. Remember: There is no such thing as a self-made billionaire. If you can't experience gratitude, you might as well have stayed exactly where you started.

5 Important Elements Of Success People Seldom Mention
You might be expecting me to write something basic about patience, integrity, humility, honesty, discipline, and other qualities that might make up a successful person. If you’re looking for an article like that, you’ll find them everywhere. This article is different. It’s not meant to talk about one word or one quality of successful people in a generic sense and re-define what those things mean for you. This articles purpose is to help you re-define what your personal success is and how you define yourself.
There are elements of success people seldom mention, and sometimes those things have nothing to do with the present or the individual. Below, feel free to read about those five elements.
1. Your job isn’t your success.
You are your success, and what you’re successful in will vary. It doesn’t have to be your job. It could be your family, it could be your volunteer work, or your community service. Success is multi-faceted. In addition, your job may not be a direct reflection of you, your greatest strengths, or the best use of your time. Your job might not enable you to contribute to the world in a way you would like, yet so many people define themselves by their jobs, or their next big promotion. Success is a lifestyle and an attitude.
2. Failure is going to happen to you. Just because you fail at something, doesn’t mean you are a failure.
I’ve only failed one class in my life: geometry. I did my best, and I tried hard, enrolling in tutoring and after school classes to help boost my grade. Failing, I thought, would be unacceptable and earth-shattering. I thought I’d be too embarrassed to ever be able to discuss it, l and yet here I am. Do you know what I learned? I learned it wasn’t the end of the world. I learned what I wasn’t good at. I learned where I was weak and I used those insights to make myself stronger and better educated about myself.
3. People will always see your successes. They may never know about your sacrifices.
There will always be people who think you had it easy. There were always be people who identify with you and think you had it rough. They are both wrong, and the answer is usually somewhere in the middle and defined by the individual. The truth of the matter is, no one else is going to really know how much you had to give up or overcome to get to where you are. It’s easy to think being successful is easy when the version of you people are seeing is the person who made it through the storm.
4. There are people who aren’t going to think you’re successful, no matter what you think of yourself or how you feel.
Ignore people like this. They are usually miserable themselves. There will always be people who like to gossip or speak poorly of someone else trying to get by and follow their dreams. People will tell you your goals are stupid, your dreams are unrealistic, and the money won’t follow. Sometimes they are right, and sometimes they are wrong. The only thing that matters is that you don’t base your final choices off of them.
5. Sometimes it’s about who you know.
In some respects, certain types of success have to do more with who you know as opposed to how hard you work, hustle, or study. Many people will tell you so long as you work hard, anything is possible, and while anything being possible is true, it isn’t always probable. Sometimes people have a better time, or easier time because they have good mentors or they knew the right people or joined the right clubs or had the right connections. Sometimes success is a collaborative effort, not just something we become on our own.

Who is setting your standards for you?
A true story has it that one elder man decided to jog around the local high school football field. As he huffed and puffed along, the team was in practice. The players soon started running sprints up and down the field. The man told himself, “I’ll just keep running until they quit.”
So he ran. And they ran. And he ran some more. And they kept running. And he kept running until he could finally run no more. He stopped in exhaustion. One of the players, equally exhausted, approached him and said, “Boy, I’m glad you finally stopped. Coach told us we had to keep running as long as the old guy was jogging!” He was watching them. They were watching him. He was letting them set his standard. They allowed him to set theirs.
My question is this: Are you keeping pace with somebody else? Are you allowing other people to set your standards for you? What about your standards, or principles, for moral behavior? Or guidelines for what kind of attitudes you want? Do you keep pace with those around you, or do you decide yourself just how you will live your life? The truth is... only you are qualified todetermine what your standards will be.
Set your standards too low, and you’ll know only discontent. But set high standards and you can live an immeasurably full and worthwhile life. For only when you reach for the best that is within yourself, will you experience great living.
Who is setting your standards?

Researchers from Pen State’s College of Liberal Arts and Stony Brook University conducted a two part experimental study to understand why those with headstrong personalities are more successful.
In the first part of the study, 200 students took a series of personality tests that measured howdisagreeable they were and their ability to come up with original ideas. Then each participant spent 10 minutes creating a unique marketing campaign for the online campus of their university. And for another 20 minutes, they broke off into groups of three to work on a joint campaign.
As predicted, being a jerk isn't advantageous for coming up with useful, original ideas, but it does seem to be advantageous for getting your ideas heard, especially in an environment consisting of pushy character. The ideas that were used in the group were from individuals who were pushy about their campaigns.
The second part of the study observed how students would do in certain group contexts. About 300 students worked alone to create a gift that would impress others visiting their campus. Next, they were told they would be video chatting with two other members of their group to share their ideas.
What the students didn’t know is that their online group members were actually assistants working for the researchers, who were told to give either supportive or negative feedback. This time, students were likely to only share their ideas if their ‘partners’ had smart ideas and gave negative feedback. In other words, the disagreeable individuals don't worry about the possibility that someone won't like their ideas.
The study suggests that individuals who are disagreeable or 'jerks' are more successful because they are better at getting their ideas heard in a group and that in supportive environments, may be useful because agreeable people will be more receptive to positive feedback.

-Stay focused.
Your job is to manage the department, not become friends with your employees or do their jobs if they can’t. Make sure you have a clear job description and then sit down with your supervisor and find out exactly what expectations he or she has for you.
-Go through the job description line by line.
Prioritize the tasks and find out what any vague wording exactly means. Then it is the time to ask questions and to point out any tasks that you feel aren’t under your control.
-Involve your staff.
Chances are your older employees have seen it all. They will be able to tell you what’s a potential problem and what isn’t. If you’re asked to solve a problem, go to them for advice before you try to come up with anything on your own.
-Don’t make massive changes all at once
. New managers frequently want to come in and totally redesign processes and systems to show how smart they are. There may be some necessary but for the first few months, keep things the way they are. Chances are the systems and processes have a history and have good reasons for being in place. If there are major areas you could change right away, you’ll still look like a more thoughtful manager if you ask for advice and get input from others, then propose a change in a reasonable timeframe.
-Be a good communicator.
Employees respect a manager who tells them what they did wrong without laying blame - you’ll go far with your employees if you admit a mistake you made before you talk to them about mistakes they’ve made. Employees also look for a leader who knows when to pass on important company information, when to go to the next level with a concern, and when to crack down on the rumor mill.

[2] No wonder. Leadership bestows 『把… 给予』 power, commands 『赢得;博得』respect and, most important, fosters 『促进;培养』 achievement. Unlike vitamins, though, leadership skills can't be easily gulped 『吞食;吞服』 down. They must be carefully cultivated『培养;磨炼』 .
[3] Contrary to popular belief, most good leaders are made, not born. They hone 『磨练』their skills in their everyday lives. But which do they cultivate? How do they (and how can you)get others to follow?
[4] Always give credit. Many leaders note that the most efficient way to get a goodperformance from others is to treat them like heroes. Giving public credit to someone whohas earned it is the best leadership technique in the world. It is also an act of generositythat's never forgotten.
[5] Giving credit is more effective than even the most constructive criticism, which oftenhurts rather than helps. Kenneth Blanchard, co-author of The One-Minute Manager, agrees. "Catch people doing something right!" he says. Then tell everyone about it. The loyalty you willgenerate 『产生;导致』 is arguably the most important currency a leader has.
[6] Take informed risks. "The best leaders know that taking a risk is not a thoughtlessexercise," says management consultant Marilyn Machlowitz. "Sky divers don't go up in anairplane without checking the parachutes 『降落伞』 beforehand."
[7] Because the idea of risk also carries with it the possibility of failure, many of us tend to waitfor others to take charge. But if you want to be a leader, you must learn to fail-and not die athousand deaths. Pick yourself up and start all over again.
[8] Show the way. In 1965, Lee Ducat was a Philadelphia homemaker with a child who had justbeen found to have diabetes 『糖尿病』 . Ducat tried to reach out to other mothers of diabetickids, but at first no one wanted to talk.
[9] Finally Ducat managed to find three othermothers willing to share their experience, and fromthat beginning she went on to found and lead theJuvenile Diabetes foundation, which currently has150 chapters worldwide. Ducat also formed and nowheads the National disease Research Interchange, which procures human tissues for vital research. LeeDucat's secret? Being a role model.
[10] "Have you ever noticed that if you smile at people, they smile back?" she asks. "Well, ifyou're giving, people want to give right back. If you're sure-footed, they want to follow in yourfootsteps. If you're confident about reaching a goal, others echo that confidence and try toachieve it for you."
[11] "The best thing you can do is to get followers to mirror your actions by being what youwish them to be."
[12] Keep the faith. Successful leaders often say that if you trust others to do well, they will. If,on the other hand, you believe your people will fail, they will probably meet your expectations aswell. Businessman-philanthropist W. Clement Stone suggests that you express your faith in aletter. He says the executive who writes of faith in and commitment to his salespeople canmotivate them to break records; the teacher who writes individual notes of encouragement tostudents can lead them to extraordinary heights. Having faith in someone gives him self-confidence and pleasure. It may sound corny 『老一套的』 , but the experts agree it works.
[13] Get a compass. People don't follow leaders who lack direction. Estee Lauder, founder ofthe cosmetics company, has led thousands of employees to great success. She claims thatevery business leader she knows puts a clear picture of what he wants to achieve in his mindand stays focused on the picture. "People want to follow those who promise-and deliver-success," she says.
[14] Act the part. Good leaders have learned to sound and look like winners. They maysometimes doubt themselves, but they don't show it, says management consultant Paula Bern. They act as if they know where they're going.
[15] Leaders also know that appearance and manners count. They are usually pleasant to bewith; their speech is polished 『变得优雅』 , their demeanor 『行为』 unruffled 『沉着的』 andassured.
[16] Be competent. Knowledge is power, the saying goes, and the best leaders know that theirsavvy 『智慧』 and proficiency are part of their charisma 『魅力』 . Competence galvanizes『激起;使振奋』 people, and will make them look to you for guidance and direction.

This is to say, …
To be more precise,…
By this I mean,…
Eg. The retired people tend to offer service for the benefits of the family and the community.
读完这个句子,我们可能对其中the benefits of the family and the community感到疑惑,到底是什么利益,提供什么服务。
This is to say, the elderly always spend their time in taking care of the family and doing household chores for the family as well as organizing charitable activities for the community.

There is no bigger cliche in business psychology than the idea that high self-confidence is key to career success. It is time to debunk this myth. In fact, low self-confidence is more likely to make you successful. Sure, extremely low confidence is not helpful: it inhibits performance by inducing fear, worry, and stress, which may drive people to give up sooner or later. But just-low-enough confidence can help you recalibrate your goals so they are more realistic and attainable.
If your confidence is low, rather than extremely low, you stand a better chance of succeeding than if you have high self-confidence. There are three main reasons for this:
1.Lower self-confidence makes you pay attention to negative feedback and be self-critical:Most people get trapped in their optimistic biases, so they tend to listen to positive feedback and ignore negative feedback. Although this may help them come across as confidence to others, in any area of competence (e.g., education, business, sports or performing arts) achievement is 10% performance and 90% preparation. Thus, the more aware you are of your soft spots and weaknesses, the better prepared you will be. Indeed, success is the best medicine for your insecurities.
2.Lower self-confidence can motivate you to work harder and prepare more:If you are serious about your goals, you will have more incentive to work hard when you lack confidence in your abilities. In fact, low confidence is only demotivating when you are not serious about your goals. If you really want what you say you want, then, your low confidence will only make you work harder to achieve it — because it will indicate a discrepancy between your desired goal and your current state.
3.Lower self-confidence reduces the chances of coming across as arrogant or being deluded: Indeed, people with low self-confidence are more likely to admit their mistakes - instead of blaming others - and rarely take credit for others' accomplishments. This is the most important benefit of low self-confidence because it points to the fact that low self-confidence can bring success, not just to individuals but also to organizations and society.
In brief, if you are serious about your goals, low self-confidence can be your biggest ally to accomplish them.
