A Coke and a Smile
I know now that the man who sat with me on the oldwooden stairs that hot summer night over thirty-fiveyears ago was not a tall man. But to a five-year-old,he was a giant. We sat side by side, watching thesun go down behind the old Texaco service stationacross the busy street. A street that I was neverallowed to cross unless accompanied by an adult, orat the very least, an older sibling.
Cherry-scented smoke from Grampy's pipe kept the hungry mosquitoes at bay while gray, wispy swirls danced around our heads. Now and again, he blew a smoke ring and laughed as Itried to target the hole with my finger. I, clad in a cool summer nightie, and Grampy, hissleeveless T-shirt, sat watching the traffic. We counted cars and tried to guess the color of thenext one to turn the corner.
Once again, I was caught in the middle of circumstances. The fourth born of six children, it wasnot uncommon that I was either too young or too old for something. This night I was both. While my two baby brothers slept inside the house, my three older siblings played with friendsaround the corner, where I was not allowed to go. I stayed with Grampy, and that was okaywith me. I was where I wanted to be. My grandfather was baby-sitting while my mother, fatherand grandmother went out.
Thirsty?" Grampy asked, never removing the pipe from his mouth.
" Yes," was my reply." How would you like to run over to the gas station there and get yourselfa bottle of Coke?"
I couldn't believe my ears. Had I heard right? Was he talking to me? On my family's modestincome, Coke was not a part of our budget or diet. A few tantalizing sips was all I had everhad, and certainly never my own bottle.
" Okay," I replied shyly, already wondering how I would get across the street. Surely Grampywas going to come with me.
Grampy stretched his long leg out straight and reached his huge hand deep into the pocket. Icould hear the familiar jangling of the loose change he always carried. Opening his fist, heexposed a mound of silver coins. There must have been a million dollars there. He instructedme to pick out a dime. After he deposited the rest of the change back into his pocket, he stoodup.
" Okay," he said, helping me down the stairs and to the curb, " I'm going to stay here and keepan ear out for the babies. I'll tell you when it's safe to cross. You go over to the Coke machine, get your Coke and come back out. Wait for me to tell you when it's safe to cross back."
My heart pounded. I clutched my dime tightly in my sweaty palm. Excitement took my breathaway.
Grampy held my hand tightly. Together we looked up the street and down, and back up again. He stepped off the curb and told me it was safe to cross. He let go of my hand and I ran. I ranfaster than I had ever run before. The street seemed wide. I wondered if I would make it to theother side. Reaching the other side, I turned to find Grampy. There he was, standing exactlywhere I had left him, smiling proudly. I waved.
" Go on, hurry up," he yelled.
My heart pounded wildly as I walked inside the dark garage.I had been inside the garage beforewith my father. My surroundings were familiar. I heard the Coca-Cola machine motor hummingeven before I saw it. I walked directly to the big old red-and-white dispenser. I knew where toinsert my dime. I had seen it done before and had fantasized about this moment many times.
the big old monster GREedily accepted my dime, and I heard the bottles shift. On tiptoes Ireached up and opened the heavy door. There they were: one neat row of thick green bottles, necks staring directly at me, and ice cold from the refrigeration. I held the door open with myshoulder and grabbed one. With a quick yank, I pulled it free from its bondage. Another oneimmediately took its place. The bottle was cold in my sweaty hands. I will never forget thefeeling of the cool glass on my skin. With two hands, I positioned the bottleneck under theheavy brass opener that was bolted to the wall. The cap dropped into an old wooden box, andI reached in to retrieve it. I was cold and bent in the middle, but I knew I needed to have thissouvenir. Coke in hand, I proudly marched back out into the early evening dusk. Grampy waswaiting patiently. He smiled.
" Stop right there," he yelled. One or two cars sped by me, and once again, Grampy stepped offthe curb." Come on, now," he said, " run." I did. Cool brown foam sprayed my hands." Don'tever do that alone," he warned.I held the Coke bottle tightly, fearful he would make me pour itinto a cup, ruining this dream come true. He didn't. One long swallow of the cold beveragecooled my sweating body. I don't think I ever felt so proud.
By Jacqueline M. Hickey (袁红梅 译 自 Chicken Soup forthe Woman's Soul)

Bees add an estimated eighteen billion dollars a year to the value of American crops. They pollinate(授粉)flowers that become fruits, nuts and vegetables. But, in recent years, honeybee colonies in the United States and Europe have been shrinking. Scientists have proposed different theories to explain what is known as colony collapse disorder.
New research suggests that a commonly used group of insecticide(杀虫剂) could cause bees to have a hard time finding their way back to their hive. The new research looks at the use of pesticides called neonicotinoids. They were first used in the 1990s. They are now put on the seeds of many major crops around the world. The seedlings absorb the chemicals as they grow. That means farmers do not need to spray a whole field. Instead there is a little bit of insecticide inside each plant—including the pollen(花粉) and the nectar(花蜜) that the bees want. There is not enough pesticide to kill them. But the new research in the journal Science says it may harm them anyway.
Researchers stuck microchips to the backs of the bees. These chips recorded the bees' movements as they came and went from their hive. The scientists fed some bees sugar water with a low dose of a neonicotinoid. The study found that these bees were about twice as likely not to return as other bees.
Dave Goulson at the University of Stirling in Britain worked on another study published in Science. He says the pesticides could help explain why bumblebee populations are also decreasing.
Bayer CropScience makes neonicotinoid pesticides. The company's spokesman Jack Boyne disputed the findings. He also notes that researchers are studying other factors that could affect the bees' population. These include parasites, diseases and stress caused by transporting beehives to farms. Some European countries have banned the pesticides. And there are growing calls to ban them in the United States as well.

由第二段中的“It looks like a very thin, sharp piece of broken glass. And that is how the building got the name:the Shard.”
Piano says that the spire shape of the Shard is part of a great London tradition.(Piano说“碎片大厦”的尖顶外形是伦敦伟大传统的一部分。)
由第五段中的“Only very rich people can afford to buy the expensive private apartments and stay in the hotel.”
由第一段的最后一句“However,not everyone thinks that it is a change for the better.”
