First thing in the morning, I check Twitter, only to have it list off for me all the ways I’ve already fallen behind. A colleague has released a new e-book. Two of my design heroes are announcing a collaborative project. One of my old college buddies has posted a video trailer for an upcoming online program, and she looks phenomenal, polished, charismatic (I’m still in bed, bleary-eyed, and definitely not at my most telegenic.)

But if I’m not careful, it’s terribly easy to view my social media streams as a constant reminder of all the stuff I’m not doing and dreams I’m not fulfilling.

There isn’t a single thing about Twitter – or any of the other social media platforms I use – that’s designed to make me ask how I’m measuring up. That’s all me – an automatic, internal mechanism. It’s part ego (“But what does this say about me?”), part creative drive (“What more am I capable of?”), and part deep soul yearning (“How can I make an impact, leave a legacy, and matter?”).

In our comparison-soaked culture, it’s hard to avoid looking around at what other people are doing with their short time on earth, and slipping (often unconsciously) into “How am I stacking up?” mode. Here’s what we learned:

Some competitor or other had achieved an inspiring degree of success and I was complaining to a mentor about how unachievable it seemed to me. Her warning took me aback: Look, she told me, You have no idea what it took for them to get there. Don’t act like this was unearned, effortless, or pure dumb luck.And for Pete’s sake, don’t go thinking that because you read the press release, you have a single clue about what’s really going on behind the scenes.

She was absolutely right. I knew better, yet in the moment that I’d heard the news, I fell prey to reactive thinking and over-simplification. Because it’s much easier to look at someone “up there” and envy what they’ve got than it is to ask the tougher questions:

One has the leisure of July for perceiving all the differences of the green of leaves. Gravity is the word — not solemnity as towards evening, nor menace as at night. The daylight trees of July are signs of common beauty, common freshness, and a mystery familiar and abiding as night and day. In childhood we all have a more exalted sense of dawn and summer sunrise than we ever fully retain or quite recover; and also a far higher sensibility for April and April evenings — a heartache for them, which in riper years is gradually and irretrievably consoled. But, on the other hand, childhood has so quickly learned to find daily things tedious, and familiar things importunate, that it has no great delight in the mere middle of the day, and feels weariness of the summer that has ceased to change visibly.
The poetry of mere day and of late summer becomes perceptible to mature eyes that have long ceased to be sated, have taken leave of weariness, and cannot now find anything in nature too familiar; eyes which have, indeed, lost sight of the further awe of midsummer daybreak, and no longer see so much of the past in April twilight as they saw when they had no past; but which look freshly at the dailiness of green summer, of early afternoon, of every sky of any form that comes to pass, and of the darkened elms.

Then you may be asked whether there is such a thing as an everlasting love.
I’d answer I believe in it, but an everlasting love is not immutable.
You may unswervingly love or be loved by a person.
But love will change its composition with the passage of time.
It will not remain the same.
In the course of your growth and as a result of your increased experience,
love will become something different to you.
In the beginning you believed a fervent love for a person could last definitely.
By and by, however, “fervent” gave way to “prosaic”.
Precisely because of this change it became possible for love to last.
Then what was meant by an everlasting love would eventually end up in a sort of interdependence.
We used to insist on the difference between love and liking.
The former seemed much more beautiful than the latter.
One day, however, it turns out there’s really no need to make such difference.
Liking is actually a sort of love.
By the same token, the everlasting interdependence is actually an everlasting love.
I wish I could believe there was somebody who would love me for ever.
That’s, as we all know, too romantic to be true.
Instead, it will more often than not be a case of lasting relationship.

Touch my face. Yes, I have a face like yours. It has weathered(饱经风霜的) the centuries as yours has the years. My face portrays my evolution. Yours, the birth and death of a generation. My face has aged like yours as we have endured together the testimony(证据) of earth elements.
I have eyes like yours. My inscriptions(碑铭) stare out at you as I search for the meaning of why we are here. I look into your eyes and see who you are. Who am I? I was formed millions of years past and now you see the results of my evolution.
I can feel your hands and the sweat from your palms flow into the countless combination of the letters that make me. I know you. I have known you since I was able to breathe in the air as my smoothness began to take shape and my color matured along with natural flaws. You have known me since the days when you came to take me from my mother.
You cannot hear me. I am static(静态的) and unmoving. But, I can hear your murmurs(低语) and your cries of pain and sadness. Your sons and daughters ask why? There are no answers. I am very old. I have seen everything and I am none the wiser for the pain and suffering and I have witnessed since I rose from the bowels of the earth. I have witnessed the conflict, the death, the civilizations, and the societies that have come before you. Yet I remain mystified about this day.
I feel sad yet alive with a purpose. I have come to know those who are now an integral part of the reason for my being here at this place and time. That purpose has become apparent as I stand before you on this day while your brethren (同胞)gather to witness my reflections and the changes of light that mirror your soul.
I am a reflection of you…
I am all of you…
I am your spirit..
I am The Wall.

Pain is constant companion and isn't very good one. I try to reason with this and I end of feeling miserable. I can not help but think about you. You, who has so much to give and share with me. Even when I was young, you were constant figure. You were there to see me grow up. I cried and laught, I learned and you were there to guide me. With your gray hair and chunky glasses. I would watch you think and blued and you sudden smile would lide up your face as quickly as it come. That is the very thing I love about you.You smile, I think about the times I missed being with you. So many years have passed since I saw you again. And for a breath moment I imagined you not being in my life. I wanna to cry, but I knew you were be there, as you always were.The gray hair has turned to white. And with that came a wiry frame that was fragile. Still, the eyes was ever and mind that was well running. You taught me to be strong and live for my dreams. If you were wishes for hunger for knowledge. You taught me to love learning. Always telling me that knowledge is constant thing. You were so strong, so wise and your presense was always comfort. I always love being by your side. You always gave me a hug when I fell down. I never love too crowds and you always seem to understand that not pression me to jion in the others or pretend to have a good time.I got lost the books you taught me to read. Those books which you gave me to learn more about the world. Ever so after remind of the things you taught me. You always love books. You never said much, but I always knew that every time we saw each other. You were glad to see me as I always glad to see you. I remember you with the teary face and wasteful smile. My pain is more insistant and try to hold on to the hope that you will pull through this. Like the strong person that you were. I love you grandpa.

dewy night as if you folded her garments about you.
Beneath lies the public walk with trees, like a fathomless, black gulf.
The lamps are still burning up and down the long street.
People go by with grotesque shadows, now foreshortened,
and now lengthening away into the darkness and vanishing,
while a new one springs up behind the walker,
and seems to pass him revolving like the sail of a windmill.
The iron gates of the park shut with a jangling clang.
There are footsteps and loud voices; —a tumult; —a drunken brawl; —an alarm of fire; —then silence again.
And now at length the city is asleep, and we can see the night.
The belated moon looks over the roofs, and finds no one to welcome her.
The moonlight is broken.
It lies here and there in the squares and the opening of the streets
—angular like blocks of white marble.

When in the Course of human events,
