Scene I
(Anita, Kevin, Ken, Jason, Steven, and Rita are all Tunghai University students. They are good friends. One day, Ken and Jason meet on the way to the classroom.)
Ken: Why are you late? And, you just missed the last class. The teacher gave us the main topics for the mid-term examination.
Jason: Oh, shoot! I just missed it. Would you lend me your notes so I can make a copy?
Ken: Sure if you give me a good reason why you missed the class. You promised me that you would be in class on time today.
Jason: Believe me, I would like to keep my word. The problem is that I have the “Business Management” test today and I was up studying for it till three o’clock this morning. Then I fell asleep and woke up at ten o’clock this morning.
Ken: You studied until three o’clock this morning? Why? What did you do yesterday afternoon? I know you were free from four o’clock on yesterday.
Jason: Well, I met one of my very old friends on line and we just talked too long…
Ken: For God’s sake! Don’t you care about next week’s mid-term examination?
——————————————————————————–
Scene II
(Anita, Steven and Kevin are talking to one another in front of a classroom. And, Anita is trying to prevent Steven and Kevin from cutting the next class.)
Anita: Hey, we’ll have the “Business Management” class in a few minutes. Where are you going? Don’t tell me that you are going to argue with Jason.
Steven: I will do anything for my good friend. Of course I am going to argue with the guy who gave my good friend a hard time.
Anita: You always like to get involved in someone else’s business. You’ll get yourself in trouble. Don’t you know it? …
Kevin: Anita, don’t be upset with him. He will not listen to you. Just leave him alone. By the way, I am still waiting for your decision. Are you coming with me to the concert tomorrow?
Anita: Oh, I am sorry that I almost forgot it. What time tomorrow?
Kevin: Two o’clock. I cannot wait to see my adorable superstar – Jolin. Oh, how wonderful!
Anita: wait a minute. We have Calculus class tomorrow afternoon. Are you out of your mind?
Kevin: Well, I’m not. Yet I think we can just copy the notes from someone else.
Anita: No, this is a very important class. And you would never understand it without listening to the lecture.
Kevin: To me it makes no difference. Even if I were in the class I would never understand what the teacher is talking about. Besides, who likes to look at the old baldhead?

Linda: Good morning .sir .what can I do for you?
Robbie: Good morning .My name is Robbie Stewart.
And this is Alex Pappas.
Alex: Hi .Good morning. Yesterday we found dog named Gemma.
Robbie: We have thought many ways to find it’s host,
but we don't succeed ultimately.
Linda: Oh, wait a while. You know I must make a record
in terms of rule.
Robbie: No problem.
Linda: OK .Your name will do, Mr. Stewart .
Then, please tell me your address?
Robbie: 46 Linden Street, Riverdale.
Linda: Where did you find the dog?
Alex: Speak exactly ,not we found her .
It's she found us in robbie’s house.
Linda: Have you tried calling the number on the collar?
Robbie: Yes, but the number’s no longer in service .
So we only call for you.
Linda: And there’s no address on the dog tag?
Alex: There’s no other information.
Linda: No ID number. Without that, it’s hard to find her host.
Alex: I think you will try to find the dog’s owner.
Linda: Oh, we’ll try, believe me.
Robbie: And if you don’t?
Linda: Yes?
Robbie: I want to say that...If you don’t......
can I adopt the dog?
Linda: Why, yes. If the owners don’t claim the dog
in forty-eight hours, then you can apply for adoption.
Alex: I know you must love the dog very much.
Robbie: Yes .How do I do that?
Alex: You really want to adopt the dog?
Robbie: Yes, I’m serious. If no one comes to claim Gemma,
I’d like to adopt her.
Linda: It’s not difficult .If you want to adopt her.
I believe it is also very happy to find a new host.
OK.first we need to know some references.
Robbie: References? People we know or what information else?
Linda: Friends, teachers... We need to talk to some people
about you. We want to be sure that you’re responsible
and that you can take good care of an animal.
Then you have to fill out this form about your family
background .This is the form, you can look at it first.
Robbie: Is that it?
Linda: No, there’s more. We need to know about your history
with animals. Have you ever owned an animal?
Robbie: Yes. We had a cat when I was eight years old. I love cats.
I also like other animals like dog.
Linda: OK .Do you have any animals now? I want to know more about
you.
Robbie: Unfortunately, no. So I want a animal friend again.
Please trust me I will take good care of it.
I think you can comprehend my feeling .I want to adopt her.
Alex: Anything else you want to know?
Linda: We also like to know your reasons for wanting an animal.
Alex: Just to hold it and cuddle(依偎) with it. Just to have as
a pet. I love animals.
Robbie: To have a friend — a pal. You know, man’s best friend is
his dog.
Linda: And one thing more.If you're under twenty-one years of
age...
Robbie: That’s me.
Linda: Then an adult must sign for you.
Alex: Uh-oh.
Robbie: No problem. My parents will think it’s a good idea.
I’ll be back with them.
Alex: If the real owners don’t come to claim Gemma...
How long we will wait to apply for adoption.
Linda: After forty-eight hours. But please call first.
Alex: Thanks for your information and for being so helpful.
Robbie must be happy if he adopt the dog.
Linda: It’s my pleasure. Nice talking to both of you.
Robbie: Thanks again.
Alex: Maybe the real owners will come to claim her.
Robbie: Her eyes look so sad. She must really miss them.
Linda: I see you’re both animal lovers.
Robbie: We are.
Alex: Good-bye, Miss Linda. We’ll call in a couple of days.
Linda: Good-bye, and thanks for bringing Gemma in.
Robbie: you are welcome. Bye.

22 March 2006
Dear Ms. Reinhart,
I am terribly sorry that I failed to arrive at BLCU last Friday. I hope that this did not mess you up completely, although I know that you had already made some special arrangements for my visit with you parents and friends. I am very sorry about all that. I am sure you will be sympathetic, however, when I tell you that my father is dangerously ill in hospital, and that I found it impossible to leave for the visit when he is in this state.
My father was working very hard on his project on protecting the environment. I know the project has come to a very important stage. He and his assistants did not take regular rest for three weeks. Last night, my father had a heart attack and was soon sent to the hospital. The doctor said my father was in a very serious situation, and, he might need an operation.
24 hours have passed. Nothing has changed. I have to stay at the hospital. I will let you know if there is any good news.
I am sorry again and look forward to seeing you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Tom Williams

One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class walking home from school. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must really be a nerd." I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friend tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on. As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye. As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks. They really should get lives.
He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!" There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude. I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived. As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to private school before now.
We talked all the way home, and I carried his books. He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. I asked him if he wanted to play football on Saturday with me and my friends. He said yes. The more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him. And my friends thought the same of him.Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again. I stopped him and said, "Dim boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!" He just laughed and handed me half the books.
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends. When we were seniors, we began to think about college. Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I was going to Duke. I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
Kyle was valedictorian of our class. I teased him all the time about being a nerd. He had to prepare a speech for graduation. I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak.
Graduation day, I saw Kyle.. He looked great. He was one of those guys that really found themselves during high school. He had more dates than me and all the girls loved him! Boy, sometimes I was jealous.
Today was one of those days. I can see that he was nervous about his speech. So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!" He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled."Thanks," he said. As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began. "Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years. Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach.... but mostly your friends. I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give him or her. I am going to tell you a story." I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met. He had planned to kill himself over the weekend. He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home. He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile. "Thankfully, I was saved. My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment. I saw his Mom and Dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile. Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.
Never underestimate the power of your actions. With one small gesture you can change a person's life. For better or for worse.

It is curious that our own offenses should seem so much less heinous than the offenses of others. I suppose the reason is that we know all the circumstances that have occasioned them and so manage to excuse in ourselves what we cannot excuse in others. We turn our attention away from our own defects, and when we are forced by untoward events to consider them, find it easy to condone them. For all I know we are right to do this; they are part of us and we must accept the good and bad in ourselves together.
But when we come to judge others, it is not by ourselves as we really are that we judge hem, but by an image that we have formed of ourselves from which we have left out everything that offends our vanity or would discredit us in the eyes of the world. To take a trivial stance: how scornful we are when we catch someone out telling a lie; but who can say that he has ever told not one, but a hundred?
There is not much to choose between men. They are all a hotchpotch of greatness and tininess, of virtue and vice, of nobility and baseness. Some have more strength of character, or more opportunity, and so in one direction or another give their instincts freer play, but initially they are the same. For my part, I do not think I am any better or any worse than most people, but I know that if I set down every action in my life and every thought that has crossed my mind, the world would consider me a monster of depravity. The knowledge that these reveries are common to all men should inspire one with tolerance to oneself as well as to others. It is well also if they enable us to look upon our fellows, even the most eminent and respectable, with humor, and if they lead us to take ourselves not too seriously.

The significant inscription found on an old key "If I rest, I rust" would be an excellent motto for those who are afflicted with the slightest taint of idleness. Even the most industrious might adopt it with advantage to serve as a reminder that, if one allows his faculties to rest, like the iron in the unused key, they will soon show signs of rust and, ultimately, cannot do the work required of them.
Those who would attain the heights reached and kept by great men must keep their faculties polished by constant use, so that they may unlock the doors of knowledge, the gate that guard the entrances to the professions, to science, art, literature, agriculture --- every department of human endeavor.
Industry keeps bright the key that opens the treasury of achievement. If Hugh Miller, after toiling all day in a quarry, had devoted his evenings to rest and recreation, he would never have become a famous geologist. The celebrated mathematician, Edmund Stone, would never have published a mathematical dictionary, never have found the key to science of mathematics, if he had given his spare moments to idleness. Had the little Scotch lad, Ferguson, allowed the busy brain to go to sleep while he tended sheep on the hillside instead of calculating the position of the stars by a string of beads, he would never have become a famous astronomer
Labor vanquishes all --- not inconstant, spasmodic, or ill-directed labor, but faithful, unremitting, daily effort toward a well-directed purpose. Just as truly as eternal vigilance is the price of liberty, so is eternal industry the price of noble and enduring success.

molly : do you still have to take a test?
gordon: yes, we must take an entrance exam, but it is much easier than the chinese one. we usually only need to study for a few weeks.
molly : wow, that's completely different from china!
