The cancer girl cured by the HIV virus: Seven-year-old makes extraordinary recovery after U.S. doctors re-wire her immune system to destroy leukaemia cells
In April this year, Emily Whitehead's family had almost given up hope.
The brave six-year-old had been fighting leukaemia for two years, only to relapse for a second time during intensive chemotherapy treatment in February.
Doctors had exhausted all the traditional treatments as Emily could not remain in remission for long enough to attempt a bone marrow transplant. So her desperate parents, Kari and Tom, started looking at more radical options.
Fighting fit: Emily (seen left during treatment in April) has now been in remission from cancer for seven months
'We made the decision that we needed to go somewhere else,' said Mrs Whitehead.
'We needed to try something new, different and cutting-edge.'
So they turned to the Cancer Center at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, which is involved in testing a pioneering new therapy.
Doctors suggested they sign Emily up to a clinical trial that would use a disabled form of HIV to carry cancer-fighting genes into her T-cells (disease fighting cells). The hope was that this would re-programme her immune system to recognise the cancer cells and start killing them.
Several adults had already been enrolled in the study at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and had responded well, but as it was so new the treatment wasn't without risks. But time was running out for Emily, who is also known as Emma.
Mr Whitehead said: 'We were told that we were down to 48 hours of making a decision or she could start having organ failure.'
They comforted themselves with the knowledge that even if the treatment didn't work, it would provide doctors with information that could help them save other sick children.
So on April 17, the then six-year-old became the first child to have the therapy known as CTL019.
Emily during her therapy - at first she suffered an adverse reaction, which was treated with an arthritis drug
Now in remission, Emily enjoys walking her dog who comforted her when she was ill
The family had been warned Emily could experience flu-like symptoms a few days after her re-engineered T-cells were injected back into her.
But her symptoms were far more serious than doctors anticipated. She became critically ill and was admitted to intensive care at the children's hospital. On April 24, doctors told her parents she had a one in 1,000 chance of surviving the night.
Trial leader Dr Stephan Grupp and his team realised that the level of a certain protein had become very elevated as a result of the T-cells growing in Emily's body.
This same protein is involved in rheumatoid arthritis, and there is a drug for that disease that turns off production of that particular protein.
The team administered the drug to Emily, with dramatic results. Almost overnight, her breathing improved, her fever dropped and her blood pressure was back to normal.
Mrs Whitehead said Emily inspired them with how she coped.
'She's extremely smart and creative. She's funny - she makes us laugh all the time. She never complains,' she said.
Kira and Tom faced the agonising decision of whether or not to put their daughter forward for a clinical trial
Her husband added: 'She told us from the beginning that she would continue to fight and do what we asked as long as we were there with her. We've stuck together as a team. She's definitely our hero.'
Several weeks after her T-cell infusion, they were able to conduct a bone marrow test to find out if the therapy had worked.
'Three weeks after receiving the treatment, she was in remission,' said Dr Grupp.
'Emily completely responded to her T-cell therapy. We checked her bone marrow for the possibility of disease again at three months and six months out from her treatment, and she still has no disease whatsoever. The cancer-fighting T-cells are still there in her body.'
He added that they need to see the remission go on for a couple of years before they can think about whether she is cured or not.
But, after spending years in treatment, Emily went home in June and now enjoys going to school, playing football and walking her dog Lucy.
'T-cell therapy was really the only option left for Emily,' said Mr Whitehead.
'But we entered her into the trial really hopeful, and from the very beginning we just really had a good feeling about it. So all along we said, "it just has to work, it has to work for Emily" – and it did.'
The scientists said although the results were very promising, much more research needs to be done to see whether the therapy is a viable, safe and long-term solution for controlling certain cancers in children and adults
Ken Campbell, Clinical Information Officer at Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, said the results of the study were encouraging for both children and adults diagnosed with leukaemia.
'Treatments which modify the body’s own immune system to fight leukaemia have shown much promise in recent years,' he said.
'What is significant about [the] therapy is that the severe side-effects associated with this form of treatment seem to be greatly reduced when combined with other drugs.
'This is a small study of just 12 patients. Larger clinical trials are needed to determine how effective this treatment could be and as a result it should be some time before it is available in the UK.'
Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia presented their latest findings at the American Society of Hematology’s annual meeting in Atlanta.
They found nine out of 12 patients in the trial, which included Emily and one other child, responded to the treatment. Their goal is to treat another 12 patients over the next year.

#p#副标题#e#She was fond of Strauss, KFC, and Brazil Espresso. Dressed in decent grey professional skirt suit, she was busy working in a modernized office mansion. That was her life before meeting me. Ever since our dating all those have vanished.
It was in 1997 when I started my so-called "great business". She followed me wholeheartedly. That summer came early. Flowers dyed the town dazzlingly red. We stayed in the outskirts, in a small room of a condo known as an illegal structure of this city. Wind blew through all the four walls into the room, then home of her and me.
In order to save money, we walked to our store downtown every day. Lunches were always simple like doggie food, worth no more than 1.5 yuan for each of us. We walked back home at the end of the day, so beat that all we wanted was collapse into bed. It seemed that we made it through one whole year this way.
Those days were bitter. Business was my totem; love was her belief. Both supported us from falling apart.
We walked home late one day. She sat at the bed edge, washing her feet in a bucket on the floor. I went to the landlord for boiled water to make instant noodle. When I got back carrying a thermos bottle, she fell back into the bed sound asleep, feet in water. She must have been extremely exhausted. One of her hands was under her body. I heard her light snore.
I tiptoed to the bed and tried to flip her over so that she would be in a more comfortable position. I stared at her face, which was a young and pretty one and yet so wearied and exhausted.
I saw one mosquito on this pretty face.
That summer my city was like a huge steamer box. We put off one day to another the plan to buy a mosquito net, just to save money. I knew mosquitos were flying all about in our room, but I seemed not to be bothered. So exhausted when I got back each day, I doubted if I would wake up even though someone cut a piece of flesh off my body, let alone mosquito bites.
That mosquito stayed at her forehead, sipping her blood greedily. She was still sound asleep, not feeling anything. Perhaps she was in a sweet dream in which our business was turning better. There came an abrupt throb of my heart. I reached to wave my hand at the mosquito. But it was not at all scared. I wanted to bat it to death. I raised my hand up high, but it could not descend. I was afraid of waking her up — she was really worn out.
There lay a weak mosquito between her and me, doing harm to her right now. I froze there, hand in the air. I did not know what to do. I was worried. Suddenly, I began to get deeply fed up with myself. I hated me.
On the night of that summer, I stood by her side, feeling extremely guilty of her, of our love.
The mosquito finally flew away. I forgave it, but I could never forgive myself.
In the daytime I went by a peddler's stall and saw a pink mosquito net priced 16 yuan. That amount could be spent on a lot of dealings at that time. I headed back home without buying it. After she fell asleep, I got out of bed, stood by her side, and waved away mosquitos with a hard paper board as a weapon. I was her temporary mosquito net all that night through. After a while she woke up to find what I was doing. She gazed at me, and ten minutes later tears flooded her face.
The next day saw a pink mosquito net in my room. We were both silent working together to fix it on our bed. In my mind I had presented the net as a gift to her. I did not tell her that it was a gift. I was feeling that it was like a rose in full bloom. It was my compensation to love. Then I realized that nothing could really make it up. It was her birthday that day.
Years went by. And I made 160,000 yuan, or precisely we made 160,000 yuan. We did a lot of shopping, but never a mosquito net any more. We did not need any mosquito net. We live in a very well decorated apartment, where no mosquitos could fly in.
Nevertheless, I always feel that all these money, and all my belongings are far less important than the 16-yuan mosquito net, which was invaluable to her, to our love.
That summer was past. We had no choice but to love each other.

The shopkeeper was very happy to show one toTom, who examined carefully and said, "There isn't alamp on this bicycle, but there was one on the bicycle in your advertisement."
"Yes, sir," answered the shopkeeper, "but the lamp isn't included in the price of the bicycle. It'san extra."
"Not included in the price of the bicycle?" Tom said angrily. "But that's not honest. If the lamp isin the advertisement, it should have been included in the price you gave there."
"Well, sir," answered the shopkeeper calmly, "there is a girl on the bicycle in our advertisement, but we don't supply one of them with the bicycle either."

Everyday, I yearn for the thrill of travelling, the thrill of trying a new Asian dish, the thrill ofbargaining with a hostile vendor on the street for a bracelet that caught my eye. I catch myselfwatching hours Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern, and replaying the episodes where he visits asmall town in China or secluded village deep in Vietnam. Occasionally, I scroll through the picturesfrom my travels, lingering on the ones where my memories stem from.
My desire to travel, in fact, makes me incredibly impulsive. One day, I was watching my old friendAndrew Zimmern travel to Cambodia. I watched him taste the peculiar foods and float down amassive man-made lake, clustered with locals trying to find dinner. The second the show ended, Iran upstairs to my computer and looked up plane tickets to Phnom Penh. It’s pathetic, I know.

We lived on the banks of the Tennessee River, and we owned the summers when we were girls. We ran wild through humid srumner days that never ended but only melted one into the other. We floated down rivers of weekdays with no school, no rules, no parents, and no constructs other than our fantasies. We were good girls, my sister and We had nothing to rebel against. This was just life as we knew it, and we knew the summers to be long and to be ours.
The road that ran past our house was a one-lane rural route. Every monung, after our parents had gone to work, I'd wait for the mail lady to pull up to our box. Some days I would put enough change for a few stamps into a mason jar lid and I eave it in the mailbox. I hated bothering mail lady with this transaction, which made her job take longer. But I liked that she knew that someone in our house sent letters into the outside world.
I liked walking to the mailbox in my bare feet and leaving footprints on the dewy grass. I imagined that feeling the wetness on the bottom of my feet made me a poet. I had never read poetry, outside of some Emily Dickinson. But I imagined that people who knew of such things would walk to their mailboxes through the moming dew in their bare feet.
We planned our weddings with the help of Barbie dolls and the tiny purple wildflowers growing in our side yard. We became scientists and tested concochons of milk, orange juice, and mouthwash. We ate handfuls of bittersweet chocolate chips and licked peanut butter off spoons. When we ran out of sweets to eat, we snitched sugary Flintstones vitamins out of the medicine cabinet. We became masters of the Kraftt macaroni and checse lunch, and we dutifully called our mother at work three times a day to give her updates on our adventures. But don't call too often or speak too loudly or whine too much, we told ourselves, or else they'll get annoyed and she'll get fired and the summers will end.
We shaped our days the way we chose, far from the prying eyes of adults. We found our dad's Playboys and charged the neighborhood boys money to look at them. We made crank calls around the county, telling people they had won a new car. "What kind?" they'd ask. "Red," we'd always say. We put on our mom's old prom dresses, complete with gloves and hats, and sang backup to the C.W. McCall song convoy, which we'd found on our dad's turntable.
We went on hikes into the woods behind our house, crawling under barbed wire fences and through tangled undergrowth. Heat and humidity found their way through the leaves to our flushed faces. We waded in streams that we were always surprised to come across. We walked past cars and auto parts that had been abandoned in the woods, far from any road. We'd reach the tree line and come out unexpectedly into a cow pasture. We'd perch on the gate or stretch out on the large flat limestone out crop that marked the end of the Woods Behind Our House. One day a thunderstorm blew up along the Tennessee River. It was one of those storms that make the day go dark and the humidity disappear. First it was still and quiet. There was electricity in the air and then the sharp crispness of a summer day being blown wide open as the winds rushed in. We threw open all the doors and windows. We found the classical radio station from two towns away and tumed up the bass and cranked up the speakers. We let the wind blow in and churn our summer day around. We let the music we were only vaguely familiar with roar through the house. And we twirled. We twirled in the living room, in the wind and in the music. We twirled and we imagined that we were poets and dancers and scientists and spring brides.
We twirled and imagined that if we could let everything the thunder, the storm, the wind , the world-into that house in the banks of the Tennessee River, we could live in our summer dreams forever. When we were girls.

Lillian was a young French Canadian girl who grew upin the farming community of River Canard, Ontario. At the age of 16, her father thought "Lill has hadenough schooling,"and she was forced to drop out ofschool to contribute to the family income. In 1922,with English as her second language and limitededucation and skills, the future didn't look bright forLill.
Her father, Eugene Bezaire, was a stern man whorarely took no for an answer and never accepted excuses. He demanded that Lill find a job. Buther limitations left her with little confidence and low self-esteem, and she didn't know whatwork she could do.
With small hope of gaining employment, she would still ride the bus daily into the "big cities"ofWindsor or Detroit. But she couldn't muster the courage to respond to a Help Wanted ad;she couldn't even bring herself to knock on a door. Each day she would just ride to the city, walk aimlessly about and at dusk return home. Her father would ask, "Any luck today, Lill?" "No... no luck today, Dad,"she would respond meekly.
As the days passed, Lill continued to ride and her father continued to ask about her job-hunting. The questions became more demanding, and Lill knew she would soon have to knockon a door.
On one of her trips, Lill saw a sign at the Carhartt Overall Company in downtown Detroit. "HelpWanted,"the sign said, "Secretarial. Apply Within."She walked up the long flight of stairs to theCarhartt Company offices. Cautiously, Lill knocked on her very first door. She was met by theoffice manager, Margaret Costello. In her broken English, Lill told her she was interested in thesecretarial position, falsely stating that she was 19. Margaret knew something wasn't right, butdecided to give the girl a chance. She guided Lill through the old business office of the CarharttCompany. With rows and rows of people seated at rows and rows of typewriters and addingmachines, Lill felt as if a hundred pairs of eyes were staring at her. With her chin on her chestand her eyes staring down, the reluctant farm girl followed Margaret to the back of thesomber room.
Margaret sat her down at a typewriter and said, "Lill, let's see how good you really are."Shedirected Lill to type a single letter, and then left. Lill looked at the clock and saw that it was11:40 a.m. Everyone would be leaving for lunch at noon. She figured that she could slip away inthe crowd then. But she knew she should at least attempt the letter.
On her first try, she got through one line.It had five words, and she made four mistakes. Shepulled the paper out and threw it away. The clock now read 11:45. "At noon,"she said toherself, "I'll move out with the crowd, and they will never see me again."
On her second attempt, Lill got through a full paragraph, but still made many mistakes. Againshe pulled out the paper, threw it out and started over. This time she completed the letter, buther work was still strewn with errors. She looked at the clock: 11:55 — five minutes tofreedom.
Just then, the door at one end of the office opened and Margaret walked in. She came directlyover to Lill, putting one hand on the desk and the other on the girl's shoulder. She read theletter and paused. Then she said, "Lill, you're doing good work!"
Lill was stunned. She looked at the letter, then up at Margaret. With those simple words ofencouragement, her desire to escape vanished and her confidence began to grow. Shethought, "Well, if she thinks it's good, then it must be good. I think I'll stay!"
Lill did stay at Carhartt Overall Company...for 51 years, through two world wars and aDepression, through presidents and six prime ministers — all because someone had theinsight to give a shy and uncertain young girl the gift of self-esteem when she knocked onthe door.

I love summer. There ia a summer vacation in summer. What I like to do best during the long summer vacation is to stay in my own little room and read. I love to read, but during the school year I could hardly find a free moment for reading. Endless assignments press down upon me like a mountain. I feel confined and imprisoned. Once the summer vacation comes, however, I have all the time in the world to read and read and read. I read everything I want to read. I read to my heart's content.
I hate summer. In summer, the weather is hot, the air is humid, and the wind doesn't blow at all. In summer, everything seems tired——except the mosquito and the fly. They are everywhere. They bring diseases to people. No one likes to walk or work under the summer sun. Because the wicked sun will burn your skin. So the hot summer confines you to your room. Hot weather makes me drowsy and I can't study effectively. I hate summer. I wish it would go away quickly.
All in all, summer is a season in every year.Of course,Ican adjust to summer.
