But I liked that she knew that someone in our house sent letters into the outside world.

We let the music we were only vaguely familiar with roar through the house. And we twirled. We twirled in the living room, in the wind and in the music. We twirled and we imagined that we were poets and dancers and scientists and spring brides.

犹如土木砖石是建筑的材料一样, 词汇是说话写作的必需材料。如果我们的学生拿起一篇英语文章,有80%的词不认识,那么怎能理解文章所表达的信息呢? 如果要写一个句子,10 个词有8 个词拼写不出或拼写错误,又怎么能表达自己的思想呢? 可见,衡量一个学生英语水平及交际能力的高低,关键还得看他掌握词汇量的多少。教学大纲规定的词汇是经过科学筛选的,是中学生学好英语所需的最基本的词汇。大纲明确指出,学生应“能拼写所学单词”、“知道基本词义,能听懂,在口、笔头练习中能运用”。为达到大纲要求,提高学生写的能力,我在多年的教学中(不论是任初中课或高中课),都坚持每周用一课时让学生默写单词,要求学生根据汉语解释,写出词的拼写形式,词类,音标。当堂同桌交换批改,教师抽查,记入平时成绩,定期与家长见面。要求默写正确率达到96%,对默写错了的,要立即订正5 遍。从初中第一册开始,逐册默写,然后又从头开始,不断反复,直到学生中学毕业。这就使学生在长时期坚持不懈的默写中积累了大量的词汇。此外,对高、初中学过的不规则动词过去式,过去名词,形容词,副词不规则变化,特殊形式的名词复数,年、月、日、星期等等,作专项默写,为学生高考书面表达打下坚实的拼写基础, 从而使学生在高考书面表达中,避免了因单词拼写错误而丢分。

Lillian was a young French Canadian girl who grew upin the farming community of River Canard, Ontario.At the age of 16, her father thought "Lill has hadenough schooling,"and she was forced to drop out ofschool to contribute to the family income. In 1922,with English as her second language and limitededucation and skills, the future didn't look bright forLill.
Her father, Eugene Bezaire, was a stern man whorarely took no for an answer and never accepted excuses. He demanded that Lill find a job. Buther limitations left her with little confidence and low self-esteem, and she didn't know whatwork she could do.
With small hope of gaining employment, she would still ride the bus daily into the "big cities"ofWindsor or Detroit. But she couldn't muster the courage to respond to a Help Wanted ad;she couldn't even bring herself to knock on a door. Each day she would just ride to the city,walk aimlessly about and at dusk return home. Her father would ask, "Any luck today, Lill?" "No... no luck today, Dad,"she would respond meekly.
As the days passed, Lill continued to ride and her father continued to ask about her job-hunting. The questions became more demanding, and Lill knew she would soon have to knockon a door.
On one of her trips, Lill saw a sign at the Carhartt Overall Company in downtown Detroit. "HelpWanted,"the sign said, "Secretarial. Apply Within."She walked up the long flight of stairs to theCarhartt Company offices. Cautiously, Lill knocked on her very first door. She was met by theoffice manager, Margaret Costello. In her broken English, Lill told her she was interested in thesecretarial position, falsely stating that she was 19. Margaret knew something wasn't right, butdecided to give the girl a chance. She guided Lill through the old business office of the CarharttCompany. With rows and rows of people seated at rows and rows of typewriters and addingmachines, Lill felt as if a hundred pairs of eyes were staring at her. With her chin on her chestand her eyes staring down, the reluctant farm girl followed Margaret to the back of thesomber room.
Margaret sat her down at a typewriter and said, "Lill, let's see how good you really are."Shedirected Lill to type a single letter, and then left. Lill looked at the clock and saw that it was11:40 a.m. Everyone would be leaving for lunch at noon. She figured that she could slip away inthe crowd then. But she knew she should at least attempt the letter.
On her first try, she got through one line.It had five words, and she made four mistakes. Shepulled the paper out and threw it away. The clock now read 11:45. "At noon,"she said toherself, "I'll move out with the crowd, and they will never see me again."
On her second attempt, Lill got through a full paragraph, but still made many mistakes. Againshe pulled out the paper, threw it out and started over. This time she completed the letter, buther work was still strewn with errors. She looked at the clock: 11:55 — five minutes tofreedom.
Just then, the door at one end of the office opened and Margaret walked in. She came directlyover to Lill, putting one hand on the desk and the other on the girl's shoulder. She read theletter and paused. Then she said, "Lill, you're doing good work!"
Lill was stunned. She looked at the letter, then up at Margaret. With those simple words ofencouragement, her desire to escape vanished and her confidence began to grow. Shethought, "Well, if she thinks it's good, then it must be good. I think I'll stay!"
Lill did stay at Carhartt Overall Company...for 51 years, through two world wars and aDepression, through presidents and six prime ministers — all because someone had theinsight to give a shy and uncertain young girl the gift of self-esteem when she knocked onthe door.

'We needed to try something new, different and cutting-edge.'
So they turned to the Cancer Center at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, which is involved in testing a pioneering new therapy.
Doctors suggested they sign Emily up to a clinical trial that would use a disabled form of HIV to carry cancer-fighting genes into her T-cells (disease fighting cells). The hope was that this would re-programme her immune system to recognise the cancer cells and start killing them.
Several adults had already been enrolled in the study at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and had responded well, but as it was so new the treatment wasn't without risks. But time was running out for Emily, who is also known as Emma.
Mr Whitehead said: 'We were told that we were down to 48 hours of making a decision or she could start having organ failure.'
They comforted themselves with the knowledge that even if the treatment didn't work, it would provide doctors with information that could help them save other sick children.
So on April 17, the then six-year-old became the first child to have the therapy known as CTL019.

The family had been warned Emily could experience flu-like symptoms a few days after her re-engineered T-cells were injected back into her.
But her symptoms were far more serious than doctors anticipated. She became critically ill and was admitted to intensive care at the children's hospital. On April 24, doctors told her parents she had a one in 1,000 chance of surviving the night.
Trial leader Dr Stephan Grupp and his team realised that the level of a certain protein had become very elevated as a result of the T-cells growing in Emily's body.
This same protein is involved in rheumatoid arthritis, and there is a drug for that disease that turns off production of that particular protein.
The team administered the drug to Emily, with dramatic results. Almost overnight, her breathing improved, her fever dropped and her blood pressure was back to normal.
Mrs Whitehead said Emily inspired them with how she coped.
'She's extremely smart and creative. She's funny - she makes us laugh all the time. She never complains,' she said.

Her husband added: 'She told us from the beginning that she would continue to fight and do what we asked as long as we were there with her. We've stuck together as a team. She's definitely our hero.'
Several weeks after her T-cell infusion, they were able to conduct a bone marrow test to find out if the therapy had worked.
'Three weeks after receiving the treatment, she was in remission,' said Dr Grupp.
'Emily completely responded to her T-cell therapy. We checked her bone marrow for the possibility of disease again at three months and six months out from her treatment, and she still has no disease whatsoever. The cancer-fighting T-cells are still there in her body.'
He added that they need to see the remission go on for a couple of years before they can think about whether she is cured or not.
But, after spending years in treatment, Emily went home in June and now enjoys going to school, playing football and walking her dog Lucy.
'T-cell therapy was really the only option left for Emily,' said Mr Whitehead.
'But we entered her into the trial really hopeful, and from the very beginning we just really had a good feeling about it. So all along we said, "it just has to work, it has to work for Emily" – and it did.'
The scientists said although the results were very promising, much more research needs to be done to see whether the therapy is a viable, safe and long-term solution for controlling certain cancers in children and adults
Ken Campbell, Clinical Information Officer at Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, said the results of the study were encouraging for both children and adults diagnosed with leukaemia.
'Treatments which modify the body’s own immune system to fight leukaemia have shown much promise in recent years,' he said.
'What is significant about [the] therapy is that the severe side-effects associated with this form of treatment seem to be greatly reduced when combined with other drugs.
'This is a small study of just 12 patients. Larger clinical trials are needed to determine how effective this treatment could be and as a result it should be some time before it is available in the UK.'
Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia presented their latest findings at the American Society of Hematology’s annual meeting in Atlanta.
They found nine out of 12 patients in the trial, which included Emily and one other child, responded to the treatment. Their goal is to treat another 12 patients over the next year.

Konnikova says the unsent angry letter used to be a tradition among public figures who needed to think twice about their choice of words. Former US president Harry S. Truman, former UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill and American author Mark Twain all wrote unsent angry letters.

Because creating them is so easy, you feel it less a satisfying experience to vent out your feelings, so you feel the need to do it more often. When your emotions never quite cool, they keep coming out in other ways.
