With eight bloodshot eyes fixed on a flying object, the toils of a two-year project were about to bear fruit.
It was Wang Hongyi’s first test flight of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) designed and assembled with his teammates from the Aero-Sport Club at Shanghai Jiaotong University.
They had been working on the 16-propellered multicopter for countless nights and they couldn’t have been more nervous about the results.
Wang is a senior mechanical engineering and automation major. The 23-year-old never expected that after a successful lift off, their UAV would need another 200 test flights before coming even close to perfection.
Despite the hard work, Wang says they are fuelled by their passion for technological perfection.
Accidental spot
Wang has been a plane model maniac since he can remember. As a freshman, he spent two nights building a model aircraft and took it to the sports field just for fun. Wu Junqi, a lecturer at the school of aviation and astronautics and the coach of Shanghai Jiaotong University’s Aero-Sport Club, spotted Wang on his way to the canteen. Wu told Wang that the plane he had built was a “pre-Industrial Revolution one” – in other words, it was outdated.
“I was a little offended, so he took me to the Aero-Sport Club’s laboratory,” says Wang. He was immediately drawn to the cutting-edge equipment and decided to join the club.
The Aero-Sport Club gave full play to Wang’s strengths - information technology and physics, which are the pillars of making model aircrafts.
“I love IT and physics, and my way of loving them is constantly broadening my knowledge in these areas and using it to make a difference,” Wang says.
Lab geeks
As a technology “geek”, Wang routinely spends most of his spare time in the laboratory.
“During vacations, I live in the laboratory and follow the same routine every day,” he says.
After getting up at 6 am, Wang starts his day by taking his aircraft for a test flight. Around 8 am he makes some adjustments to the plane and recharges its batteries. He takes the aircraft for another two-hour flight before lunch and then spends the whole afternoon in the laboratory making further adjustments and recharging the batteries. The last test flight is at 5 pm, after which Wang compares all the day’s test flight results.
He usually goes to bed at 11:30 pm after reflecting on his day’s work and thinking about what adjustments need to be made the following day. But if Wang has a good idea, he postpones his bedtime to 2 or 3 am.
“The longest time I’ve spent continuously going to the laboratory is one and a half months,” he says.
“He loves what he’s doing, so he can bare the monotony and loneliness of doing research that others seldom have the persistence to carry out,” says coach Wu. “Sometimes he calls me at 10 or even 11 pm just to discuss technical problems,” he says.
Never satisfied
When Wang and his teammates were building the 16-propellered UAV, they lived together in the laboratory. “We tried to spend as much time together as possible because there were thousands of problems that needed to be tackled,” Wang says. They didn’t even have time to celebrate when the first test flight of the multicopter went well. “We needed to list the problems that occurred during the flight and analyze them to find solutions,” he says.
The team stuck to their routine even after their work caught much attention at the Challenge Cup, which is considered an Olympic event among science and technology students.
“Our multicopter isn’t finished yet, but there are many design projects and people with similar interests waiting for me,” Wang says. “A 16-propellered UAV is just the beginning, not the end of my aircraft journey.”

How to create more time
This is, of course, not an all-inclusive list, but it’s a good start to reclaiming some time back. These were some of my biggest time-wasters:
1. Television – just stop it. Besides the occasional news, a movie every once in a while, some documentaries, I found it to be a huge time-waster.
2. Internet/web – It’s really become the new television, and as such, an equivalent waste of time. Ask yourself this, “Do I really need to see another cat video?”
3. Email – This was a more difficult one for me since responding to emails made me believe that I was being more productive. However, responding to emails all day was actually making me less productive by taking my focus off things that I really needed to get done. I now limit my time and frequency of responding to emails.
Seven Ways to Create More Time In Your Day
1. Get Up Earlier
早起
Get up fifteen minutes earlier. If you're like most folk, your morning probably feels rushed: you drag yourself out of bed at the last possible minute, grab a hasty shower, maybe get some breakfast if you're lucky, sort out the kids/cat/partner and dash off to work.
Getting up just a bit earlier can give you some breathing space. Perhaps it'll give you time to actually sit down and enjoy your breakfast for once. Maybe you can use that fifteen minutes a day to read through that book or stack of journals that you keep meaning to get to.
2. Create a Plan
At the start of your workday, before you even check your emails, make a plan. Jot down the three most important tasks you want to accomplish that day. Put a big star next to the most important. Now, before you get into the busy work of emails and photocopying and tidying your desk, start on that important task and see it through to the end.
Surprisingly few people take the time to plan their workday, and end up spinning their wheels on a number of low-priority tasks without really accomplishing anything big.
3. Batch Tasks Together
When you're going through the workday, try to keep similar tasks together. When you switch from one thing to another, your brain takes a few minutes to catch up and settle in: constantly jumping between answering emails and writing a report and tidying up your desk just means you'll lose track of where you'd got to. You might feel like you're working super-efficiently (because your mind is buzzing all over the place), but you'll actually be wasting a lot of time.
If you need to answer a number of emails, do them all at once. The same goes for phone calls, filing, photocopying and other similar tasks.
4. Block Out Chunks of Time
Do you have some big project that you'd love to get round to? Maybe it's writing a novel, starting a business, training for a marathon, decluttering your home ... whatever your particular venture or goal, you never get around to making progress.
The best way to tackle big projects like this is to force them into your schedule. Spare time doesn't just appear from nowhere – you need to make a conscious effort to create it. Block out a weekend afternoon, for instance: tell family and friends you have another engagement that day. Then storm on ahead with that project. Trust me, you'll feel great for having made a start.
5. Don't Multitask
Although multitasking feels efficient – because it feels busy – it actually loses you time. By sticking to doing one thing at a time, you'll be much more focused and able to produce your best work: there's nothing efficient about rushing a job which you then end up having to redo.
6. Stay Focused
When you are working on a task, make a conscious effort to remain focused. Sure, you'll have intrusive thoughts like maybe I should check my email or this desk could really do with tidying. Just recognize that those thoughts are impulses which you don't need to give into. If you think of something while you're working on your task like I really must phone Joe, then just make a note on a bit of paper or in your diary so you don't forget – and get on with the task at hand.
You'll accomplish much more by working in a deliberately focused way than if you let yourself jump around from task to task as things come to mind.
7. Finish Work On Time
Finally, one of the best ways to make more time in your life is to finish your work on time! If you work for an employer, make an effort to leave the office on time – at least a couple of days each week. (I know this is difficult if your workplace has a long-hours culture).
If you work for yourself, you need to be even more self-disciplined, as your work is likely to be very easily accessible when you're at home! Some good ways to create a boundary at the end of the day are to keep your work separate from the rooms in your house where you relax. You could also schedule something social in the evening (perhaps meeting friends for a drink) so that you can't get caught up in "just one more email"...

There is an old Spanish Proverb which states, "Tomorrow is often the busiest day of the week". How many times have we put off our dreams until tomorrow? I’d say, way too many. Our dreams should not, and cannot wait. We have to go for them now! Here’s why
Nobody likes to talk about death, but the reality is – everybody is going to die at one point. None of us know the day, or the hour. Therefore, today is all we have. Don’t go to your grave with unfulfilled dreams. Make the decision to go after every dream, big or small right now.

Successful people always have adream. They dream big dreams and then display great courage to do things that others say cannot be done.
Your dreams form the foundation of success. Many people have long forgotten the dreams they used to have when they were kids.As they grow older, they are simply too caught up with their workactiivities that they fail to discover what they really want to pursue in life. They find themselves trapped in a routine work system that can potentially rob them of their dreams.
To get you back on track to pursue your dreams, follow these steps:
Learndream again: We are bom to dream. Children often share their dreams and what want to be when they grow up.But we hear of teachers yelling in school: "Stop dreaming and pay attention in class!" Parents, too, have shrieked: "Stop dreaming and get on with your homework!" Leaming and growing up in such an environment, one may regard dreaming as an unproducdve act. As children grow up, they are told to forget their dreams and be prachcal because they are living in a"real" world In the end, many do get "realistic" and give up their dreams eventually.
Dream big dreams: Never set mental ooundaries on what you are capable of achieving. Dreams are free anyway, so as long as you are dreanung, you might as well dream big. Many people cannot realize their dreams and achieve greater success because they limit theirrown beliefs.Flee from dream killers: Dream killers are devastating to your success. Your friends, colleagues, and even loved ones can be one of your dream killers. There are people who will try to dtstract, confuse, or persuade you to build the life they want, not the life that you want.
Stop listening to the people who tell you why you will not achieve your dreams. You just need to believe you can do whatever it is you want to do.
Other people can only discourage us temporarily, but you are the only one who can prevent yourself from being discouraged
Stop giving excuses: Kids talk frequently about what they can do, whereas many adults do the opposite. Adults tend to talk about what they cannot do and why.
You should stop giving reasons why you cannot achieve your dreams, Many so-called reasons are merely excuses.If you continue giving excuses for not achieving, it will not take long before you convince yourself that you really cannot accomplish what you originally set out to achieve.
As Henry Ford wisely put it: "Whether you think you can or cannot, you're absolutely right."
Take action immediately: Once you have big and clear dreams, take immediate action to work towards making them come true. Very often ,if people do not translate their intenhon into action soon their passion will begin to diminish.
Weeks later, the passion will grow cold and months later, that passion may be gone forever. Think about this: Five birds are resting on the fence and minutes later, three birds decide to fly off to search for food. How many birds are Ieft on the fence?
TWO? Wrong! There should still be five birds on the fence because deciding to fly offis not the same as the actual act of flying off. The birds would not be able to food until they start to take action and fly out of their comfort zone.

All children have dreams, but how many get the chance to turn their dream into the reality? For every child this would be a magical moment in their lives, but for those suffering from a life-threatening illness or a long-term debilitating condition, it can have an even greater impact.
Each year the Dreams Come True Charity brings a smile of the faces of hundreds of children and young adults between 2 and 21 years who are suffering from a serious or terminal illness. We aim to bring some happiness into their lives, the benefits of which are many and varied for both the children and their families.
Popular requests include experiencing the magic of Disney and swimming with dolphins. But any dream is shaped by a child’s imagination and special needs, leading to seemingly endless range of possible. Some of the more “unusual” dream requests we have recently fulfilled include having cows in the back garden, meeting long-lost relatives in Kenya and Jamaica, naming a police horse, and riding in rally car.
Other dreams are less adventurous but just as special, for example, having a specially adapted bed which can improve quality of life, or a TV or music centre for a bed room where the children spend a lot of their time. We have even had a request for a special children’s tricycle enabling him to keep up with his friends playing outside. But for some children it’s simpler things in life that make their dream come true- a trip to Butlins and the seaside, or even for one little boy, the chance to see bananas growing on a real tree.
There is no limit to a child’s imagination and severe illness should not prevent them from experiencing real quality fun and excitement. No dream is too big or too small for Dreams Come True.

Some years ago I took on an assignment in a southern county to work with people on public welfare. What I wanted to do was to show that everybody has the capacity to be self-sufficient and all we have to do is to activate them. I asked the county to pick a group of people who were on public welfare, people from different racial groups and different family constellations. I would then see them as a group for three hours every Friday. I also asked for a little petty cash to work with as I needed it.
I asked what their dreams were. Everyone looked at me as if I were a kind of wacky. “Dreams? We don’t have any dreams.”
I said, “Well, when you were a kid, what happened? Wasn’t there something you wanted to do?”
One woman said to me, “I don’t know what you can do with dreams. The rats are eating my kids. ”
“Oh,” I said, “that’s terrible! No. Of course you’re very much involved with the rats and your kids. How can that be helped?”
“Well, I could use a new screen door, because there are holes in my screen door.”
I asked, “Is there anybody around you who knows how to fix a screen door?”
“Maybe I can have a try,” a man said.
The next week when the group was seated, I said to the woman, “Well, is your screen door fixed?”
“Oh, yes,” she said.
“Then we can start dreaming, can’t we?”She sort of smiled at me.
That helped the group to begin to dream. The seemingly small successes allow the group to see that dreams were not insane. The small steps began to get people to see and feel that something really could happen.
Everyone found something. The man who put in the screen door became a handy man, and another woman who took in the children became a licensed foster care person. In twelve weeks, I had all these people off public welfare. I’ve not only done that once. I’ve done it many times.

Bindi Irwin, the 8-year-old daughter of the late "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin, followed in her dad’s footsteps Thursday, using her American television debut to talk about animals.The khaki-clad girl skipped across the stage holding a blue-tongued lizard as she greeted audiences of the "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."
"This is Spanky. He’s 10 years old," Bindi told DeGeneres as she prodded the lizard to lick her face in an attempt to show its tongue.
"I just love animals. My dad really brought it out in me," Bindi said. "He’s the one that made me."
The only footage showing Irwin's death has now been destroyed, Terri Irwin told TV's "Access Hollywood" in an interview airing this week that the tape was destroyed when it was no longer needed for the investigation into his death.
"There's standard protocols for examining certain evidence and that's no longer necessary, so we're very proud that Steve's last documentary is going to air and that's his last footage with wildlife," she said.
Irwin died while he was shooting two projects, including "Ocean's Deadliest" for the Discovery Channel.
When asked by "Access Hollywood" about reports that she kept that tape, Terri Irwin responded, "Oh no, all footage has been destroyed."
Steve Irwin's manager, John Stainton, said Saturday that the completed "Ocean's Deadliest" — minus footage from the day Irwin was killed — would be screened in the United States on Jan. 21.

Years ago in Scotland, the Clark family had a dream. Clark and his wife worked and saved, making plans for their nine children and themselves to travel to the United States. It had taken years, but they had finally saved enough money and had gotten passports and reservations for the whole family on a new liner to the United States.
The entire family was filled with anticipation and excitement about life in America. However, seven days before their departure, the youngest son was bitten by a dog. The doctor sewed up the boy but hung a yellow sheet on the Clarks' front door. Because of the possibility of rabies, they were being quarantined for fourteen days.
The family's dreams were dashed. They would not be able to make the trip to America as they had planned. The father, filled with disappointment and anger, stomped to the dock to watch the ship leave—without the Clark family. The father shed tears of disappointment and cursed both his son and God for their misfortune.
Five days later, the tragic news spread throughout Scotland—the mighty Titanic had sunk. The unsinkable ship had sunk, taking hundreds of lives with it. The Clark family was to have been on that ship, but because the son had been bitten by a dog, they were left behind in Scotland.
When Mr. Clark heard the news, he hugged his son and thanked him for saving the family. He thanked God for saving their lives and turning what he felt was a tragedy into a blessing.
Although we may not always understand, all things happen for a reason.

No young man believes he will ever die.
It was a saying of my brother’s, and a fine one.
There is a feeling of Eternity in youth,which makes us amend for everything.
To be young is to be as one of the Immortal Gods.
One half of time indeed is flown
—the other half remains in store for us with all its countless treasures,
for there is no line drawn, and we see no limit to our hopes and wishes.
We make the coming age our own —
The vast, the unbounded prospect lies before us.
Death, old age, are words without a meaning that pass by us
like the idea air which we regard not.
Others may have undergone,or may still be liable to them—we“bear a charmed life”,
which laughs to scorn all such sickly fancies.
As in setting out on delightful journey,we strain our eager gaze forward
—Bidding the lovely scenes at distance hail!
And see no end to the landscape, new objects presenting themselves as we advance.
So, in the commencement of life, we set no bounds to our inclinations,
nor to the unrestricted opportunities of gratifying them.
We have as yet found no obstacle,no disposition to flag;
and it seems that we can go on so forever.
We look round in a new world,full of life, and motion, and ceaseless progress,
and feel in ourselves all the vigor and spirit to keep pace with it,
and do not foresee from any present symptoms how we shall be left behind
in the natural course of things, decline into old age, and drop into the grave.
It is the simplicity, and as it were abstractedness of our feelings in youth,
that (so to speak) identifies us with nature,
and (our experience being slight and our passions strong)
deludes us into a belief of being immortal like it.

Studies serve for delight, for ornament, and for ability.
Their chief use for delight, is in privateness and retiring;
for ornament, is in discourse;
and for ability, is in the judgement and disposition of business.
For expert men can execute, and perhaps judge of particulars, one by one;
but the general counsels, and the plots and marshalling of affairs,
come best from those that are learned.
To spend too much time in studies is sloth;
to use them too much for ornament,is affectation;
to make judgement wholly by their rules, is the humour of a scholar.
They perfect nature, and are perfected by experience:
for natural abilities are like natural plants,that need pruning by study;
and studies themselves do give forth directions too much at large,
except they be bounded in by experience.
Crafty men contemn studies, simple men admire them, and wise men use them;
for they teach not their own use;
but that is a wisdom without them, and above them, won by observation.
Read not to contradict and confute;
nor to believe and take for granted; nor to find talk and discourse;
but to weigh and consider.
Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed,and some few to be chewed and digested;
that is, some books are to be read only in parts;
others to be read, but not curiously;
and some few to be read wholly,and with diligence and attention.
Some books also may be read by deputy, and extracts made of them by others;
but that would be only in the less important arguments, and the meaner sort of books;
else distilled books are, like common distilled waters, flashy things.
Reading makes a full man; conference a ready man; and writing an exact man.
And therefore,if a man write little,he had need have a great memory;
if he confer little, he had need have a present wit;
and if he read little, he had need have much cunning, to seem to know that he does not.
Histories make men wise; poets witty; the mathematics subtle;
natural philosophy deep; moral grave;
logic and rhetoric able to contend.

So far as I know, Miss Hannah Arendt was
the first person to define the essential difference
between work and labor. To be happy, a man must feel,
firstly, free and, secondly, important. He cannot
be really happy if he is compelled by society to do
what he does not enjoy doing, or if what he enjoys doing
is ignored by society as of no value or importance.
In a society where slavery in the strict sense
has been abolished, the sign that what a man does
is of social value is that he is paid money to do it,
but a laborer today can rightly be called a wage slave.
A man is a laborer if the job society offers him is
of no interest to himself but he is compelled to
take it by the necessity of earning a living
and supporting his family.The antithesis to labor is play.
When we play a game, we enjoy what we are doing,
otherwise we should not play it, but it is
a purely private activity; society could not care less
whether we play it or not.Between labor and play stands work.
A man is a worker if he is personally interested in the job
which society pays him to do; what from the point of view of society
is necessary labor is from his own point of view voluntary play.
Whether a job is to be classified as labor or work depends,
not on the job itself, but on the tastes of the individual
who undertakes it. The difference does not, for example,
coincide with the difference between a manual and mental job;
a gardener or a cobbler may be a worker, a bank clerk a laborer.
Which a man is can be seen from his attitude toward leisure.
To a worker, leisure means simply the hours he needs
to relax and rest in order to work efficiently.
He is therefore more likely to take too little leisure
than too much; workers die of coronaries and forget
their wives’ birthdays. To the laborer, on the other hand,
leisure means freedom from compulsion, so that it is natural
for him to imagine that the fewer hours he has to spend laboring,
and the more hours he is free to play, the better.

One of the major pleasures in life is appetite,
and one of our major duties should be to preserve it.
Appetite is the keenness of living;
it is one of the senses that tells you that
you are still curious to exist,
that you still have an edge on your longings
and want to bite into the world
and taste its multitudinous flavours and juices.
By appetite, of course,I don’t mean just the lust for food,
but any condition of unsatisfied desire,
any burning in the blood that proves you want more than you’ve got,
and that you haven’t yet used up your life.
Wilde said he felt sorry for those
who never got their heart’s desire,
but sorrier still for those who did.
Appetite, to me, is that state of wanting,
which keeps one’s expectations alive.
In wanting a peach, or a whisky,
or a particular texture or sound,
or to be with a particular friend.
For in this condition, of course,
I know that the object of desire is always at its most flawlessly perfect.
Which is why I would carry the preservation of appetite
to the extent of deliberate fasting,
simply because I think that appetite is too good to lose,
too precious to be bludgeoned into insensibility
by satiation and over-doing it.
Fasting is an act of homage to the majesty of appetite.
So I think we should arrange to give up our pleasures regularly
— our food, our friends, our lovers —
in order to preserve their intensity,
and the moment of coming back to them.
For this is the moment that
renews and refreshes both oneself and the thing one loves.
Sailors and travellers enjoyed this once,
and so did hunters, I suppose.
Part of the weariness of modern life may be that
we live too much on top of each other,
and are entertained and fed too regularly.
Too much of anything —
too much music, entertainment, happy snacks,
or time spent with one’s friends —
creates a kind of impotence of living
by which one can no longer hear,
or taste, or see, or love, or remember.
Life is short and precious,
and appetite is one of its guardians,
and loss of appetite is a sort of death.
So if we are to enjoy this short life
we should respect the divinity of appetite,
and keep it eager and not too much blunted.

Have you ever been around someone who immediately put you at ease? Perhaps you may be one of those people who others feel safe around.
What is the common thread in people who emanate warmth? Some may think it is related to personality or physical appearance. But this does little to explain why bright beacons of light can be found anywhere. Essence has nothing to do with our exterior.
I like to believe the common thread is a universal trait we are all able to tap into. When we see the truth of who we are and wholeheartedly love every part of that truth, we automatically shine. When we embrace our essence and live in congruence with who we are, we radiate peace.
Every day we can choose to wake up and see the gift of getting to be who we are. When we decide to live from this way of "being," it becomes easy to see this same light and gift in everyone — even those who may not yet see it in themselves.
The benefits of self-love are many. What I know to be true without a doubt in my heart, is that we are all capable of giving this gift to ourselves.
These words help me remember why embracing my essence is always the best thing to do. Perhaps this may resonate with where you are.
When you love who you are,
you become a conduit of light.
Just drop into your heart space,
and live life from this view.
For all of this doing
is not who you are.
Listen to your heart’s soft whisper,
this voice will show you the way.
Live life from your essence
is what she will say.
See the light in yourself,
and your world will be bright.
There is no need to worry,
you are exactly as you should be;
你正是自己本来的模样;
remember to love who you are,
and love you will see.

Your vacation doesn’t have to be dead time when it comes to self-improvement.
You can boost your skills while relaxing and de-stressing.
In other words, your vacation can be a great time to improve your emotional intelligence—and still thoroughly remain in vacation mode.
Since that’s one of the most important job skills on the market right now, it’s worth taking a page or two from the most emotionally intelligent vacationers’ play books.
1. THEY USE THE TIME TO SELF-REFLECT
As the pace of things slackens, ask yourself:
· What kind of people irritate me?
·What kind of people am I drawn to?
· Who do these people remind me of?
Being in a laid back, relaxed state is an excellent time to do some self-reflection.
So sure, have a cocktail or dive into a book, but carve out some time just to be alone with your thoughts.
2. THEY LOOK FOR WAYS TO EMPATHIZE
Most people do this in their own heads anyway when they’re traveling overseas or someplace unfamiliar.
Notice people and their facial expressions, their posture, dress, and manner of walking—these are all great ways to gather clues about what’s going on with them.
In fact, you can assume this mind-set even when you’re going to a movie, out to eat, or to a live performance.
3. THEY PRACTICE POLITE ASSERTIVENESS
Many people struggle with asking for what they want.
Emotionally intelligent people realize that the worst that can happen is getting a no, in which case they’re no worse off than before asking for something they want.
You might think of the boardroom as the real place to be more assertive, but vacation is actually just as good a time to stretch your “asking muscles.”
When you check into your accommodation, try asking for an upgrade. If there’s a problem with your meal, tell the server.
Just be polite.
Because you often won’t see the people you’re dealing with again, it may be easier to ask for what you want.
4. THEY RECONSIDER THEIR GOALS
Vacations are a great time to revisit past goals or even set new ones.
When you’re away from your everyday routine, you’re better positioned to take a look at where you are in life and contemplate where you’d like to be.
Those who get high scores for emotional intelligence are usually pretty good at getting away from their daily habits now and then in order to refocus and take an inventory of their lives.
5. THEY IMPROVE THEIR RESILIENCE HABITS
While you might like to tell yourself that next month you’ll finally start meditating daily or picking up a journaling routine, life often gets in the way.
Emotionally intelligent people aren’t immune to this, but they’re good at using vacation time to retool those resilience strategies.
Vacations give us a chance to return to what we know we should be doing for ourselves but don’t often make time for.
