When I was growing up, I had an old neighbornamed Dr. Gibbs. He didn't look like any doctor I'dever known. He never yelled at us for playing in hisyard. I remember him as someone who was a lotnicer than circumstances warranted.
When Dr. Gibbs wasn't saving lives, he was plantingtrees. His house sat on ten acres, and his life's goalwas to make it a forest.
The good doctor had some interesting theoriesconcerning plant husbandry. He came from the “No pain, no gain” school of horticulture. Henever watered his new trees, which flew in the face of conventional wisdom. Once I asked why.He said that watering plants spoiled them, and that if you water them, each successive treegeneration will grow weaker and weaker. So you have to make things rough for them and weedout the weenie trees early on.
He talked about how watering trees made for shallow roots, and how trees that weren'twatered had to grow deep roots in search of moisture. I took him to mean that deep rootswere to be treasured.
So he never watered his trees. He'd plant an oak and, instead of watering it every morning,he'd beat it with a rolled-up newspaper. Smack! Slap! Pow! I asked him why he did that, and hesaid it was to get the tree's attention.
Dr. Gibbs went to glory a couple of years after I left home. Every now and again, I walked byhis house and looked at the trees that I'd watched him plant some twenty-five years ago. They're granite strong now. Big and robust. Those trees wake up in the morning and beattheir chests and drink their coffee black.
I planted a couple of trees a few years back. Carried water to them for a solid summer. Sprayedthem. Prayed over them. The whole nine yards. Two years of coddling has resulted in trees thatexpect to be waited on hand and foot. Whenever a cold wind blows in, they tremble andchatter their branches. Sissy trees.
Funny things about those trees of Dr. Gibbs'. Adversity and deprivation seemed to benefitthem in ways comfort and ease never could.
Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons. I stand over them and watch theirlittle bodies, the rising and falling of life within. I often pray for them. Mostly I pray that theirlives will be easy. But lately I've been thinking that it's time to change my prayer.
This change has to do with the inevitability of cold winds that hit us at the core. I know mychildren are going to encounter hardship, and I'm praying they won't be naive. There'salways a cold wind blowing somewhere.
So I'm changing my prayer. Because life is tough, whether we want it to be or not. Too manytimes we pray for ease, but that's a prayer seldom met. What we need to do is pray for rootsthat reach deep into the Eternal, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we won't be sweptasunder.

In the game of life, if it often seems like you’re on the losing end of things, you’re not alone. Life can be one giant conundrum filled with ups and downs. When you feel like you’re experiencing more downs than ups, sometimes it helps to get a little tough love once in a while. That’s why we put together this list of 10 harsh truths that will help you grow.
1. Life isn’t fair.
Life will hand you lemons, often when you least expect it. The sooner you embrace this harsh truth, the better prepared you’ll be to handle tough situations that are sure to arise.
2. The first step is always the hardest.
Let’s face it: changing bad habits is tough. Research proves it. Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu once said, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” So if you want to change something, start with baby steps. Take a small action–any action–and grow from there.
3. Good things usually don’t come quickly.
Great accomplishments in our lives normally don’t come easy. And if you think about it, would you have it any other way? There’s a basic psychological principle called instant gratification, which means that we expect to get rewards instantly. But sometimes you need to fight the impulses your brain throws at you and trust that the journey you’re on is the right one.
4. Not everyone will support you along the way.
In life, there’s no shortage of doubters, haters, and pessimists. Overcoming this harsh truth is simple: don’t listen. Choose to stick with your guns, trust your instincts, and forget about people who don’t support your goals and passions.
5. You can’t always be in control of everything.
Listen, letting go is hard, especially if you’re a go-getter. But if you want to continue to grow, there are times when you need to relinquish your control on everything and let things unfold how they’re meant to be. This doesn’t mean your mentality for everything should be “wait and hope.” You can still strive for greatness, but put the work in and then let go with complete faith that the universe will make things right for you. You’ll be amazed at how well it works.
6. You can’t accomplish great things without taking great risks.
Here’s another harsh truth many people have trouble grasping: if you don’t take risks you will have a lot harder time accomplishing what you want in life. People who truly change the world are the biggest risk takers. They’re the ones who are willing to put everything on the line and fail for something they believe in. And they treat each failure as an opportunity to grow and get better.
7. You may be better off without some of the people you currently care about.
This one is tough to hear, I know. But chances are, there’s someone in your life you care about deeply who is holding you back. That’s not to say you should give up on the people you love. However, there comes a time when you need to make the tough decision to say no to people who aren’t helping you grow.
8. Death is a part of life.
Nothing can prepare us for the earth-shattering pain of losing a loved one. The harsh truth of life is that it’s a viscous cycle. However, there’s something you can do to make losing someone you love a lot less painful: make them a part of your life right now. Don’t put off making that phone call or paying a random visit to a friend or family member you haven’t seen in a while. Treat every moment with your loved ones as if it’s your last, and you won’t have any regrets.
9. You are the only thing holding yourself back from greatness.
Often we get so caught up hoping for the next great thing that we don’t realize what’s unfolding right in front of our faces. Don’t hold yourself back with negative thoughts. Instead, focus on the positive things you have going in your life. Choose to be happy right now.
10. Sometimes bad things happen to good people
Suffering is part of life. But here’s the cool thing: it makes us stronger. There’s a randomness to how the world works that’s really hard to understand. We see evidence of this every day, and it can really make you question the future of mankind. How you choose to view the world is up to you. Just remember, the truth, however harsh, will set you free.

So he never watered his trees. He’d plant an oak and, instead of watering it every morning, he’d beat it with a rolled-up newspaper. Smack! Slap! Pow! I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the tree’s attention.

This change has to do with the inevitability of cold winds that hit us at the core. I know my children are going to encounter hardship, and I’m praying they won’t be naive. There’s always a cold wind blowing somewhere.
So I’m changing my prayer. Because life is tough, whether we want it to be or not. Too many times we pray for ease, but that’s a prayer seldom met. What we need to do is pray for roots that reach deep into the Eternal, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we won’t be swept asunder.

Graduation day arrived — I saw Kyle and he lookedgreat. He was one of those guys that really foundhimself during high school. He filled out and actuallylooked good in glasses. He had more dates than meand all the girls loved him!
Boy, sometimes I was jealous. Today was one ofthose days. I could see that he was nervous abouthis speech. So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled. "Thanks," he said.As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began. "Graduation is a time to thankthose who helped you make it through those tough years. Your parents, your teachers, yoursiblings, maybe a coach... but mostly your friends. I am here to tell all of you that being afriend to someone is the best gift you can give them. I am going to tell you a story."
I stared at my friend in disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met. He had planned tokill himself over the weekend. He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Momwouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home. He looked hard at me and gave mea little smile. "Thankfully, I was saved. My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about hisweakest moment. I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile. Not until that moment did I realize its depth.
Never underestimate the power of your actions. With one small gesture you can change aperson's life. For better or for worse. God puts us all in each other's lives to impact oneanother in some way. Look for God in others.
"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how tofly."
There is no beginning or end ... Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is mystery. Today is a gift. (finished)

It seems to me a very difficult thing to put into words the beliefs we hold and what they make you do in your life. I think I was fortunate because I grew up in a family where there was a very deep religious feeling. I don’t think it was spoken of a great deal. It was more or less taken for granted that everybody held certain beliefs and needed certain reinforcements of their own strength and that that came through your belief in God and your knowledge of prayer.
But as I grew older I questioned a great many of the things that I knew very well my grandmother who had brought me up had taken for granted. And I think I might have been a quite difficult person to live with if it hadn’t been for the fact that my husband once said it didn’t do you any harm to learn those things, so why not let your children learn them? When they grow up they’ll think things out for themselves.
And that gave me a feeling that perhaps that’s what we all must do—think out for ourselves what we could believe and how we could live by it. And so I came to the conclusion that you had to use this life to develop the very best that you could develop.
I don’t know whether I believe in a future life. I believe that all that you go through here must have some value, therefore there must be some reason. And there must be some “going on.” How exactly that happens I’ve never been able to decide. There is a future—that I’m sure of. But how, that I don’t know. And I came to feel that it didn’t really matter very much because whatever the future held you’d have to face it when you came to it, just as whatever life holds you have to face it exactly the same way. And the important thing was that you never let down doing the best that you were able to do—it might be poor because you might not have very much within you to give, or to help other people with, or to live your life with. But as long as you did the very best that you were able to do, then that was what you were put here to do and that was what you were accomplishing by being here.
And so I have tried to follow that out—and not to worry about the future or what was going to happen. I think I am pretty much of a fatalist. You have to accept whatever comes and the only important thing is that you meet it with courage and with the best that you have to give.

导语:改变自我,适者生存 如果航船只贪恋大海的清湛, 不懂得适时改变航向, 哪怕是永远也无法到达不了胜利的彼岸;
Can you change your personality significantly? For example, if you are shy, can you turn yourself into an extrovert who never gets stage fright when speaking in public?
It’s certainly not easy, but experts say it is possible.
Change who you are
First of all, you will never stay the same person. The Wall Street Journal reports several research studies conducted over the past few years show a person’s personality naturally changes over time in response to life events such as entering a committed relationship or advancing in your career.
From the ages of 20 to 65, people report increases in positive traits. Most people tend to become more agreeable, more responsible, more emotionally stable. Their personalities improve as they mature.
When researchers talk about “personality”, they mean a “characteristic pattern of thinking, feeling and behaving that is consistent over time and across situations,” says Christopher Soto, a research psychologist at Colby College in Maine, US. Soto told The Wall Street Journal that personality is about 50 percent innate and 50 percent learned.
Psychologists usually use the Big Five personality model. According to this model, the human personality can be divided into five broad categories or domains — openness, conscientiousness, agreeableness, neuroticism and extroversion.
Some personality types are more successful than others. Soto says people who are more conscientious tend to do better in the workplace and school. People who score high on agreeableness and low on neuroticism tend to have more satisfying and stable relationships. Extroverts do better in social and entrepreneurial occupations.
Time is key
According to Soto, even small changes in a person’s personality can produce important effects on relationships, career, health and happiness. But change takes time.
“You start by changing the behavior and then, if you can maintain that new behavior over time, it gets encoded,” Soto says.
Where do you start? “First, we have to recognize which pieces of our personality affect us,” says Richard Levak, a well-known personality expert who often appears in US TV programs. “If I am always getting fired because I get into arguments with co-workers and always blame others, then I have to realize that I have to change something,” he says.
Don’t set your expectations too high. Be patient. Warren Kennaugh, a behavioral strategist in Sydney, Australia, says it’s important to start small. Identify a first step and then practice it without worrying about the initial results. “It’s like learning to kick a football, you focus on the steps, not whether it goes in the goal,” The Wall Street Journal quoted him as saying.
You should also let the people close to you know what you’re doing. “Not only can they be supportive,” Kennaugh says, “but a change for you can also mean a change for them — one they may not want or be ready for, if they aren’t told beforehand.”

Carl RogersWhat I am is good enough if I would onlybe it openly.
The following was written in answer to a 15-year-oldgirl's question, "How can I prepare myself for afulfilling life?"
I am me.
In all the world, there is no one else exactly like me.There are people who have some parts like me butno one adds up exactly like me. Therefore, everything that comes out of me is authentically mine because I alone choose it.
I own everything about me — my body, including everything it does; my mind, including all mythoughts and ideas; my eyes, including the images of all they behold; my feelings, whateverthey might be — anger, joy, frustration, love, disappointment, excitement; my mouth and allthe words that come out of it — polite, sweet and rough, correct or incorrect; my voice, loudand soft; all my actions, whether they be to others or myself.
I own my fantasies, my dreams, my hopes, my fears.
I own all my triumphs and successes, all my failures and mistakes.
Noteadd up:合计come out of:由...
Because I own all of me, I can become intimately acquainted with me. By so dong, I can loveme and be friendly with me in all my parts. I can then make it possible for all of me to work inmy best interests.
I know there are aspects about myself that puzzle me, and other aspects that I do not know. But as long as I am friendly and loving for the solutions to the puzzles and for ways to find outmore about me.
However I look and sound, whatever I say and do, and whatever I think and feel at a givenmoment in time is me. This is authentic and represents where I am at that moment in time.
When I review later how I looked and sounded, what I said and did, and how I thought and felt, some parts may turn out to be unfitting. I can discard that which is unfitting and keep thatwhich proved fitting, and invent something new for that which I discarded.
I can see, hear, feel, think, say and do. I have the tools to survive, to be close to others, to beproductive, to make sense and order out of the world of people and things outside of me.
I own me and therefore I can engineer me.
I am me and I am okay.

Since I go to high school, I have many annoyances. On the one hand, I am under great pressure on my study, I need to take the exams every month, once I am falling behind other students, I will feel that I am not doing well. I always want to be the best, but things can’t go on my way. On the other hand, I don’t want to talk to my parents, if they ask me the questions, I will answer them with few words. I think they won’t understand me, so I am not willing to communicate with my parents. I know I am in the adolescence, my body grows fast, changes happen on me, my emotion is unstable. So I need to learn to adjust myself and get used to these changes. I need to open my heart and have less pressure.

Want to be more effective this year? Start by considering these tips:
(success principle number 1: How you think is everything: Always be positive. Think success, not failure. Beware of negative environment.)
--Use interteam competition to boost morale and results.
It worked for Eddie Rickenbacker, commander of the 94th Aero Squadron in France, during World War I.
Known as the “ace of aces” for shooting down dozens of German enemy planes, Rickenbacker took command of the squadron soon after morale hit its lowest ebb.
The squadron's former commander had been killed in action. Combat losses were mounting and pilots were being killed in noncombat crashes due to poor maintenance of planes.
“The squadron was dependent on equipment provided by the French, as American airplanes weren't available,” then Major General William Cohen recalls. “ Pilots felt they weren't getting the best equipment.”
Upon taking command, Rickenbacker threw down a challenge.“First I called the pilots together. I pointed out that our airplanes were the same as other squadrons at the front, including the French,”
Rickenbacker said later. “ I asked them whether they felt that the French were pilots. When they indicated they felt the 94th Aero Squadron had the best pilots at the front, I challenged them to prove it through competition with the other squadrons. It was simple to keep score. Whichever squadron shot the most planes down was the winner.”
He then met with his ground crew and emphasized their importance in battle.“I said that without them, the pilots might as well stay on the ground,” Richenbacker recalled. He explained that his pilots were competing with Allied squadrons, and challenged his men on the ground to face off against Allied maintenance crews.
The outcome hinged on the “number of aircraft fit for flight and the number of accidents due to maintenance. I knew from my racing days that competition works,” Rickenbacker said.
The 94th squadron became an airborne juggernaut, one of the most successful fighting units in history.

One Girl Changed My Life
My childhood and adolescence were a joyous outpouring of energy, a ceaseless quest for expression, skill, and experience.School was only a background to the supreme delight of lessons in music, dance, and dramatics, and the thrill of sojourns in the country, theaters, concerts. And books, big Braille books that came with me on streetcars, to the table, and to bed.
Then one night at a high school dance, a remark, not intended for my ears, stabbed my youthful bliss: “That girl, what a pity she is blind.”
Blind! That ugly word that implied everything dark, blank, rigid, and helpless. Quickly I turned and called out, Please don’t feel sorry for me, I’m having lots of fun. But the fun was not to last.
With the advent of college, I was brought to grips with the problem of earning a living. Part-time teaching of piano and harmony and, upon graduation, occasional concerts and lectures, proved only partial sources of livelihood. In terms of time and effort involved, the financial remuneration was disheartening.
This induced within me searing self-doubt and dark moods of despondency. Adding to my dismal sense of inadequacy was the repeated experience of seeing my sisters and friends go off to exciting dates.
How grateful I was for my piano, where—through Chopin, Brahms, and Beethoven—I could mingle my longing and seething energy with theirs. And where I could dissolve my frustration in the beauty and grandeur of their conceptions.
Then one day, I met a girl, a wonderful girl, an army nurse, whose faith and stability were to change my whole life. As our acquaintance ripened into friendship, she discerned, behind a shell of gaiety, my recurring plateaus of depression.
She said, “Stop knocking on closed doors. Keep up your beautiful music. I know your opportunity will come. You’re trying too hard. Why don’t you relax, and have you ever tried praying?”
The idea was strange to me. It sounded too simple. Somehow, I had always operated on the premise that, if you wanted something in this world, you had to go out and get it for yourself.
Yet, sincerity and hard work had yielded only meager returns, and I was willing to try anything. Experimentally, self-consciously, I cultivated the daily practice of prayer. I said: God, show me the purpose for which You sent me to this world. Help me to be of use to myself and to humanity.
In the years to follow, the answers began to arrive, clear and satisfying beyond my most optimistic anticipation. One of the answers was Enchanted Hills, where my nurse friend and I have the privilege of seeing blind children come alive in God’s out-of-doors. Others are the never-ending sources of pleasure and comfort I have found in friendship, in great music, and, most important of all, in my growing belief that as I attune my life to divine revelation, I draw closer to God and, through Him, to immortality.

Sir Edmund Hillary is famous for being the first person to climb Mt. Everest.
What many people do not know is that Sir Hillary did not make it to the top of Everest the first time he tried The first attempt was a complete failure. His c1imbing party encountered one problem after another and more than half his climbing party died.
Nonetheless, the British Parliament decided to honor him with some type of award. When he entered the chamber to receive his award, Sir Hillary saw that a large picture of Everest had been set up.
During the standing ovation that he was receiving, he walked over to the picture, shook his fist at it and said, "You won, this time. But you are as big as you are ever going to get. And I'm still growing."
We frequently hear the stories of people who have succeeded. And we frequently assume that they succeeded the first time.
But in fact it's the exact opposite.
The road to success is paved with the bricks of failure.

Two seeds lay side by side in the fertile spring soil.
The first seed said, "I want to grow! I want to sendmy roots deep into the soil beneath me, and thrustmy sprouts through the earth's crust above me…. Iwant to unfurl my tender buds like banners toannounce the arrival of spring… I want to feel thewarmth of the sun on my face and the blessing ofthe morning dew on my petals!"
And so she grew.
The second seed said, "I am afraid. If I send my roots into the ground below, I don't know whatI will encounter in the dark. If I push my way through the hard soil above me I may damage mydelicate sprouts…. what if I let my buds open and a snail tries to eat them? And if I were toopen my blossoms, a small child may pull me from the ground. No, it is much better for me towait until it is safe."
And so she waited.
A yard hen scratching around in the early spring ground for food found the waiting seed andpromptly ate it.
MORAL OF THE STORY: Those of us who refuse to risk and grow get swallowed up by life.

1.Growth that Starts from Thinking
