"Oh, no! Here I am at an American family's home at the dinner table. There are all kinds of plates, saucers, cups, and silverware at my place. Which should I use for which food? Should I sit down first or wait for the host to invite me? Should I have brought a gift? Someone please tell me what to do!"
Have you ever been in or had a nightmare about this situation? Don't worry! This article will help steer you through the rocks and reefs of Anglo-American table manners so that if you are ever abroad in Canada or the United States, or at someone's home from one of those countries, you will feel right at home.
It is important to distinguish what kind of occasion you will be attending before you plan for a pleasant evening. Most Anglo-Americans enjoy entertaining at home, but they don't enjoy stuffy, formal dinners. They invite their friends over for a fun evening, not as a test of one's knowledge of cultural traditions. If, however, you are invited to a formal affair, such as a so-called "sit-down" dinner, you may want to know in advance some basic rules of "black tie" etiquette.
The first thing to remember when attending a dinner at a Western home is that you are the guest and that you are a foreigner. No one will invite you if he does not really want you to enter his "castle," so you can be sure that you are wanted. Additionally, as you do not come from the same country or culture as your host, he or she or they will surely be aware of this, and will be very forgiving if you unintentionally do or say something which would otherwise offend them. Keeping these two simple tips in mind should greatly ease your concern about being present at a dinner in someone else's home.
Before arriving at your host's home, you may want to make sure of three things. First, be a few minutes late, say, about five to ten minutes if possible. Never be early, as the host may not have everything prepared yet. Nor should you be more than 20 minutes late. Your host may begin to worry about whether you are able to attend the dinner or not. Next, as to whether to bring a gift, in most informal gatherings, it is not necessary. If you like, you can bring some fruit or sweets, or, especially if there is a hostess, some flowers. These are thoughtful, cheerful gifts sure to please. Do not bring alcoholic beverages unless you are sure of your host's or hostess's preferences in drinks. Above all, do not spend a lot of money, and never give money. As we say in English, "It's the thought that counts." Finally, wear comfortable clothing. One can overdress as well as appear sloppy. For a special occasion or religious holiday, such as a retirement party or Christmas, a tie and jacket would be suitable for the gentlemen and a dress or sweater and skirt for the ladies.
就像我们在英文中说的 "It's the thought that counts."(“礼轻情意重”)。
For more formal affairs, you will probably be told what to wear, such as "formal dress requested," etc. A tie and jacket or tuxedo for the gents and an evening gown for the ladies would be in order here. If you are unsure what to wear, you can always ask the host. Gifts are seldom appropriate for these affairs, unless for a wedding reception, at which gifts are more customary than cash.
Your host in his home will usually motion you where to sit. At formal gatherings, name cards are sometimes provided, or you will be told where to sit. Do not be alarmed by a great deal of cutlery: simply start from the outside and work your way in. Formal affairs often have several courses of food with the appropriate cutlery for each dish. There is no harm in checking with your neighbor to see what implement he is using. After all, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." It is customary to ask others to pass dishes to you for self-serving; at a formal dinner party, there is usually catering (service). Again, do not hesitate to ask others for information or advice. They are usually pleased to help you.
The most important piece of advice is this: enjoy yourself. No host enjoys seeing nervous or fearful guests who are struggling to "do the right thing" at his home or expensive formal dinner party. Watch others or ask for their advice, and join in the conversation and good times as best you can. If you do, after the first such evening out, you will certainly look forward to the next!

Todd: Looking back I think other roles were kind of traditional like I have two sisters andthey usually had the responsibility of doing the cleaning, and I had the responsibility of , youknow, mowing the lawn, and taking out the trash and cleaning up the yard and stuff likethat. Was it similar in your house?
Buddhi: Well, dad used to do stuff like that and my brother and I didn't do much work.
Todd: You were spoiled.
Buddhi: Very, very, very, very .... yeah. Did you ever decide to shift work with your sisters?
Todd: No, of course, it never even occured to me. I mean, when you're young, you just dothey tell you to do, and to be honest I was very happy. I think I loved doing yardwork. I lovedmowing the grass and pruning the trees and, you know, taking about the trash — anything thatwas physical I enjoyed. I didnt enjoy cleaning. But you never had to do that?
Buddhi: Well, I cleaned my own room and my brother cleaned his own, and I mean, it'sobvious and it's ... I mean... it's something we really should do, like at home. When we eat,you clean your dish, and maybe we ... when I grew up, I'd wash ... I'll do the dishes, and evenif I didn't do my mom wouldn't expect me to do it, and make sure I do it somehow. If it's notdone, she'd do it. If I do it, well, she'll be thankful.
Todd: So, in your household, who mops the floor?
Buddhi: My dad would.
Todd: Your dad would. Who washes the windows?
Buddhi: My dad, yeah.
Todd: Oh, your dad! He's hardworking. OK, who does the laundry?
Buddhi: My mom or myself.
Todd: Or yourself? Really! OK. What does your brother do?
Buddhi: Most of the time, like, he's about eight years older than me, so as soon as hegraduated from high school he went abroad for high studies, so when he was doing the usualstuff, I was a kid, so I was not doing anything, so soon after he went I took over or somethinglike that.
Todd: Well you did some stuff.
Buddhi: I did. I'm proud.

Todd: Hey, Melissa, we're talking about big events this week and what are some big eventsthat you really enjoy?
Melissa: I like doing community events. I'm trying to get more involved in communityevents. There's a flea market this weekend.
Todd: A flea market?
Melissa: Yes.
Todd: Oh, yeah.
Melissa: At the beachside, and there's going to be lots of different eco-friendly stuff going onthere, so it's kind of a mix of a reuse, resell your old stuff. Get new stuff for cheap.
Todd: OK, so for people who might not be familiar with the term flea market, can youexplain?
Melissa: A flea market is basically a place where people can take old clothes, old utensils, forks, spoons, knives, things like that from the kitchen, and other housewares either sell them or givethem away at a cheap price, and it's fun because the customers ... a lot of them like to comeand look at all the different stuff and even maybe haggle some prices, so try to get you to givea lower price, or if you're trying to get rid of a lot of stuff you might try to get the customer totake two things for the price of one. Things like that.
Todd: Yeah, right. Like when I was a kid I used to always go to flea marts, or flea marketswith my grandparents, and what I thought was great is that you can haggle.
Melissa: Yeah.
Todd: Right? Cause in the U.S. you can't haggle at a store.
Melissa: Yeah, exactly. And I like doing that when I'm travelling ... haggling. Trying to get agood deal, so it's fun to do it at a flea market when you're selling your own stuff.
Todd: So, this weekend, are you selling or buying?
Melissa: Well, I actually don't have that much stuff to sell cause I've recently moved so I'vegotten rid of a lot of stuff I don't need, but I do plan bring some old pieces of clothing andthings like that that I want to get rid of, and yeah, I'm really into flea markets and old thriftstores and stuff like that, so I just like to see what people have. If there's something cool, Imight buy it.

Lindsay: So if you buy a game, how long does it take you to beat the game? One year orfifteen hours or what?
Jake: Well, maybe the shortest one are only about six hours but it all depends on how muchyou're playing it. If it's something I really like, sometimes I can't put it down and I just keepplaying it and I finish it in a few days and sometimes, well, it's alright but I can't get myself tokeep playing it so sometimes it can take me a few months to finish a game.
Lindsay: Oh, OK. So do you think you're a very skillful video game player?
Jake: No, I'm pretty bad sometimes, especially at the newer games. I'm better at the old ones.
Lindsay: Oh, Ok, but one final question, do you think it's more important to beat the actualvideo game or when you're playing with someone to beat the person that you're playing with?
Jake: What do you mean?
Lindsay: So, you know, when you're friend comes over and you're both playing the videogames together and you're competing against one each other, or is it better to actually likebeat the video game itself? Does that make sense? Don't you usually against your friend?
Jake: Yeah, sometimes I play against my friends, but it seems like there's less goal to it whenyou're playing against someone else. You win sometimes and you lose sometimes, but once youfinish the game, then you can feel like you've accomplished something.
Lindsay: Oh, OK. Have you ever been so addicted to a game, and then you finished it andyou were disappointed because you liked the game so much?
Jake: Actually, that happens a lot. Sometimes you finish a game that you really like and youwish there were more games that you could keep playing it.
Lindsay: OK, that happens to me but that's when I am reading a book, or yeah, usually whenI'm reading a book or finish a long project but I can't imagine that happening with a videogame.
Jake: It's exactly the same as with a book or with a TV series or something else that you reallyenjoy. When it's finished...
Lindsay: It's bitter sweet, right?
Jake: Yes, exactly.
