[1]Being considered a leader in our society is theultimate『最高的;极至的』compliment. "Leadershiphas become the universal vitamin C pill," sayspsychologist David Campbell of the Center forCreative Leadership in Colorado Springs, Colo. "People seem to want megadoses『大剂量』."
[2] No wonder. Leadership bestows 『把… 给予』 power, commands 『赢得;博得』respect and, most important, fosters 『促进;培养』 achievement. Unlike vitamins, though, leadership skills can't be easily gulped 『吞食;吞服』 down. They must be carefully cultivated『培养;磨炼』 .
[3] Contrary to popular belief, most good leaders are made, not born. They hone 『磨练』their skills in their everyday lives. But which do they cultivate? How do they (and how can you)get others to follow?
[4] Always give credit. Many leaders note that the most efficient way to get a goodperformance from others is to treat them like heroes. Giving public credit to someone whohas earned it is the best leadership technique in the world. It is also an act of generositythat's never forgotten.
[5] Giving credit is more effective than even the most constructive criticism, which oftenhurts rather than helps. Kenneth Blanchard, co-author of The One-Minute Manager, agrees. "Catch people doing something right!" he says. Then tell everyone about it. The loyalty you willgenerate 『产生;导致』 is arguably the most important currency a leader has.
[6] Take informed risks. "The best leaders know that taking a risk is not a thoughtlessexercise," says management consultant Marilyn Machlowitz. "Sky divers don't go up in anairplane without checking the parachutes 『降落伞』 beforehand."
[7] Because the idea of risk also carries with it the possibility of failure, many of us tend to waitfor others to take charge. But if you want to be a leader, you must learn to fail-and not die athousand deaths. Pick yourself up and start all over again.
[8] Show the way. In 1965, Lee Ducat was a Philadelphia homemaker with a child who had justbeen found to have diabetes 『糖尿病』 . Ducat tried to reach out to other mothers of diabetickids, but at first no one wanted to talk.
[9] Finally Ducat managed to find three othermothers willing to share their experience, and fromthat beginning she went on to found and lead theJuvenile Diabetes foundation, which currently has150 chapters worldwide. Ducat also formed and nowheads the National disease Research Interchange, which procures human tissues for vital research. LeeDucat's secret? Being a role model.
[10] "Have you ever noticed that if you smile at people, they smile back?" she asks. "Well, ifyou're giving, people want to give right back. If you're sure-footed, they want to follow in yourfootsteps. If you're confident about reaching a goal, others echo that confidence and try toachieve it for you."
[11] "The best thing you can do is to get followers to mirror your actions by being what youwish them to be."
[12] Keep the faith. Successful leaders often say that if you trust others to do well, they will. If,on the other hand, you believe your people will fail, they will probably meet your expectations aswell. Businessman-philanthropist W. Clement Stone suggests that you express your faith in aletter. He says the executive who writes of faith in and commitment to his salespeople canmotivate them to break records; the teacher who writes individual notes of encouragement tostudents can lead them to extraordinary heights. Having faith in someone gives him self-confidence and pleasure. It may sound corny 『老一套的』 , but the experts agree it works.
[13] Get a compass. People don't follow leaders who lack direction. Estee Lauder, founder ofthe cosmetics company, has led thousands of employees to great success. She claims thatevery business leader she knows puts a clear picture of what he wants to achieve in his mindand stays focused on the picture. "People want to follow those who promise-and deliver-success," she says.
[14] Act the part. Good leaders have learned to sound and look like winners. They maysometimes doubt themselves, but they don't show it, says management consultant Paula Bern. They act as if they know where they're going.
[15] Leaders also know that appearance and manners count. They are usually pleasant to bewith; their speech is polished 『变得优雅』 , their demeanor 『行为』 unruffled 『沉着的』 andassured.
[16] Be competent. Knowledge is power, the saying goes, and the best leaders know that theirsavvy 『智慧』 and proficiency are part of their charisma 『魅力』 . Competence galvanizes『激起;使振奋』 people, and will make them look to you for guidance and direction.

Women are more likely than men to display symptoms of depression when in a position of authority at work, according to US scientists.
Dr Ruth Sealy at City University in London said women were often "trapped" by the gendered notion of a good leader.
When female leadership adopted traditionally masculine behaviours as leaders, they were criticised for being unfeminine, yet colleagues would not believe the women were good leaders if they saw only their feminine characteristics.
Therefore, they have worse mental health than lower status women.
The leadership is/are in agreement on this issue.(领导对这个问题的看法一致。)

“We are reading the first 1)verse of the first chapterof a book whose pages are 2)infinite...”
I do not know who wrote those words, but I havealways liked them as a 3)reminder that the futurecan be anything we want to make it. We can take themysterious, 4)hazy future and carve out of itanything that we can imagine, just as a 5)sculptorcarves a statue from a shapeless stone.
We are all in the position of the farmer. If we plant a good seed, we reap a good harvest. If ourseed is poor and full of 6)weeds, we reap a useless crop. If we plant nothing at all, we harvestnothing at all.
I want the future to be better than the past. I don’t want it 7)contaminated by the mistakesand errors with which history is filled. We should all be concerned about the future becausethat is where we will spend the remainder of our lives.
The past is gone and 8)static. Nothing we can do will change it. The future is before us and9)dynamic. Everything we do will affect it. Each day brings with it new 10)frontiers, in ourhomes and in our business, if we only recognize them. We are just at the beginning of theprogress in every field of human endeavor.

An old couple went into a restaurant and ordered something to eat: one Coca Cola and one portion of French fries. The old man sat down and the woman, his wife, sat opposite him, and he began to divide the Coca Cola into two glasses, half for him and half for his wife.
He divided all the French fries half-and-half. He gave half to his wife and kept half for himself. Then he began to eat and drink, and the woman just drank but didn't eat.
There was a young man who was standing next to the table and wondering why the old man had divided everything in half, and he thought that maybe they didn't have any money. He said to the old couple, "Okay, I can buy you one more portion; you don't have to share like that."
So the old man explained, "No, no, no, we have been married for forty years and we always share everything. Whatever we have, we share half and half. Don't worry, but thank you, anyhow."
But then after a while, he saw that the woman wasn't eating eat, and only the man ate, and he asked, "Why aren't you eating?" And the wife said, "Today it's his turn to use the teeth."

An Illinois man left the snowballed streets of Chicago for a vacation in Florida. His wife was on a business trip and was planning to meet him there the next day. When he reached his hotel, he decided to send his wife a quick e-mail.
Unable to find the scrap of paper on which he had written her e-mail address, he did his best to type it in from memory. Unfortunately, he missed one letter, and his note was directed instead to an elderly preacher's wife whose husband had passed away only the day before. When the grieving widow checked her e-mail, she took one look at the monitor, let out a piercing scream, and fell to the floor dead.
At the sound, her family rushed into the room and saw this note on the screen:
Dearest Wife,
Just got checked in. Everything prepared for your arrival tomorrow.
Your Loving Husband.
P.S. Sure is hot down here.

"We are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book whose pages are infinite..."
I do not know who wrote those words, but I have always liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want to make it. We can take the mysterious, hazy future and carve out of it anything that we can imagine, just as a sculptor carves a statue from a shapeless stone.
We are all in the position of the farmer. If we plant a good seed, we reap a good harvest. If our seed is poor and full of weeds, we reap a useless crop. If we plant nothing at all, we harvest nothing at all.
I want the future to be better than the past. I don’t want it contaminated by the mistakes and errors with which history is filled. We should all be concerned about the future because that is where we will spend the remainder of our lives.
The past is gone and static. Nothing we can do will change it. The future is before us and dynamic. Everything we do will affect it. Each day brings with it new frontiers, in our homes and in our business, if we only recognize them. We are just at the beginning of the progress in every field of human endeavor.

Spring and All 春天及一切
By the road to the contagious hospital
under the surge of the blue
mottled clouds driven from the
northeast—a cold wind. Beyond, the
waste of broad, muddy fields
brown with dried weeds, standing and fallen
patches of standing water
the scattering of tall trees
All along the road the reddish
purplish, forked, upstanding, twiggy
stuff of bushes and small trees
with dead, brown leaves under them
leafless vines—
Lifeless in appearance, sluggish
dazed spring approaches—
They enter the new world naked,
cold, uncertain of all
save that they enter. All about them
the cold, familiar wind—
Now the grass, tomorrow
the stiff curl of wildcarrot leaf
One by one objects are defined—
It quickens: clarity, outline of leaf
But now the stark dignity of
entrance—Still, the profound change
has come upon them: rooted they
grip down and begin to awaken
