Your first ‘real’ job should give you thefoundation needed for future success. This couldn’t have been more true in my case, but not in the ways you’d expect.
After graduating from the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business, I went to work as an analyst in the technology group of a bulge bracket investment bank. It paid very well and was in the tech field I wanted. This was it. I was on my way.
It was 2002, during the depths of the dot-com bust and when the tech sector was a wasteland. I was working with the only active client for the group, a private technology company that engaged our bank to sell itself. As this was the only business for the group at that time, this deal was undertremendous scrutiny on all levels.
I was working 100-plus hour weeks for three straight months, and I remember vividly one weekend when I had a horrible flu. I was at the office working on a Saturday when the VP managing this deal went out to dinner. As she left, she asked for “another rev” on the presentation. Translation: I had to put in another eight hours that night, with a fever, and the CEO wanted to review the presentation on a 7:00 AM call the next morning (Sunday).
#p#副标题#e#I cant remember the exact mixture of caffeine and decongestants I took, but I somehow managed to get the presentation done, nab a couple hours of sleep and arrive back in the office for the call. I was drowsy, achy and coughing miserably during the call. At one point the VP muted the phone, looked at me and said, “I’m going to need you to perk up.
Perk up I did, but not in the way she was thinking. At that precise moment, I knew I was in the wrong job and more importantly, the wrong career path. In one life lesson she had unwittingly (and unrelentingly) taught me three key things:
Pursue great people and not the paycheck
Do work you love
Create a healthy work-life balance
Suddenly, the income was not as important as being able to work with great mentors and people I could learn from. I had hoped for this when accepting the investment-banking job and soon realized it didn’t exist. I remained blinded by the pay until that mute button was pressed. I left and ultimately took a job that paid much less but was far more rewarding in terms of the people and the work.
Having a clear understanding of what was important to me was critical not just when co-founding a company that I wanted to work at – but also to create a place that fosters satisfying careers for all those I work with as well.

We must give him something for his pains.
Much pains, no gains.

"RapeX is an anti-rape female condom invented by a South African woman named Sonette Ehlers. As a former employee with the South African Blood Transfusion Service, she treated many rape victims which served as her inspiration for creating this device. RapeX is a female condom that is inserted into the vagina much like a tampon. It is made of latex, like a normal condom, but it is lined with 'shafts of sharp, inward-facing barbs.' If a man attempts to rape a woman, once he penetrates the woman, the condom would attach itself to the penis and cause severe pain to the man during withdrawal. Ideally, once the man is writhing on the floor, the woman would have enough time to escape the scene. In addition, the perpetrator would be unable to remove the female condom from his penis; he would have to get it surgically removed which would be a tell-tale sign to authorities and help in legal prosecution."
Anti-Rape Condom
In all honesty, before learning the statistics of rape and AIDS victims in South Africa, I would not have even believed this type of device existed, nor would I have seen any reason for it to exist; however, knowing the horrific conditions that exist over there, I would donate money to any woman who lived there and wanted to invest in this type of device. In the Frequently Asked Questions section of her website Ehlers advises that women wear RapeX if "you have to travel long distances alone, on a train, working late, going out on a date with someone you don’t know too well, going to clubs, or in any situation that you might not feel comfortable or even just not sure."
Of course, a device like this is not without its critics. Lisa Vetten from the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation in South Africa states, "It is like we are going back to the days where women were forced to wear chastity belts. It is a terrifying thought that women are being made to adapt to rape by wearing these devices … Women would have to wear this every minute of their lives on the off-chance that they would be raped." Ehlers responds, "As with everything in life there will be negative attitudes and I can’t be responsible for people who refuse to educate men and feel the device is medieval. A medieval device for a medieval deed!"

1. He appreciates who you are.
You are unique and wonderful in your own way. Whether you wake up the neighborhood with your bathroom singing or like solving Sudoku puzzles in the middle of the night, he accepts you exactly the way you are. He doesn’t want to change anything about you.
2. He keeps his promises.
It can be extremely annoying when a guy insists that he will do something, but never gets around to do it. A true gentleman doesn’t backtrack on his words, but walks the talk. You rest assured that he only makes commitments that he intends to keep.
3. He stands by you.
He may not agree with your every decision, but supports the choices you make. He is there for you in success and in failure, in health and in sickness, in laughter and in tears.
4. He gives you space.
Psychologists say that having privacy in a relationship is very important. The perfect boyfriend allows you enough me-time, and doesn’t try to sneak a peek into your personal diary. He doesn’t want you to lose the “I” in the “We.”
5. He is not jealous or insecure.
Did she just check him out? Who is that guy who texted her in the middle of the night? What is she doing on a Saturday night without me? Nope, this man doesn’t waste time on such silly questions. He trusts you and is certain that you trust him.
6. He gets along with your family.
You don’t need to fret when it comes to meeting the family. The perfect guy puts on his best behavior in front of your parents and tries to befriend your sibling. Dream come true when he comfortably fits in with your family on thanksgiving dinners.
7. He makes you feel beautiful.
You don’t have to be Scarlet Johansson or Angelina Jolie to feel pretty. When you are with him, you feel like the most attractive woman on Earth. He treats you like his princess, and rightfully so.
8. He expresses his love.
True to his own style, sometimes that can mean preparing a home cooked meal, surprising you at the airport or simply saying “I love you.
9. He wants to introduce you to his friends.
Hiding you from his close pals and deliberately being “single” on Facebook can mean a red flag. A man in love wants you to be part of his social life and show you off to friends, because he thinks you are great.
10. He makes you a better person.
You are already amazing, but being with him brings out the best in you. It’s like having a personal male cheerleader! Your strengths are further amplified, and you think life just can’t get any better.
Remember that perfection doesn’t exist, but there is someone imperfectly perfect out there for you.

A conversion chart, supposedly showing the modern-day worth of Jane Austen characters' fortunes, has surfaced on Twitter. At first glance, it seems to show that Mr Darcy's supposedly vast 1803 fortune in Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice, worth $331,000 per year in modern US dollars, might not in fact stretch to quite the luxury of his 19th-century lifestyle if Darcy was alive today.
But the figures are out-of-date: they actually come from an American academic paper published in 1989, and the value of the pound has changed dramatically since then. It turns out that, Mr Darcy's annual income of £10,000 in around 1803 would be worth £796,000 per year today.
That still probably wouldn't be enough to run a modern incarnation of Pemberley, his beautiful fictional stately home in Derbyshire, if its costs were anything like the costs of running real-life Derbyshire stately home Chatsworth House today (£4m per year).
In terms of spending power, Darcy would have been able to buy more with what he had. So his income, and in particular his financial power and influence, might be more faithfullytranslated using a measure that takes into account changes in GDP per capita, as well as the far greater gap between rich and poor that existed in the early 19th century. That figure works out at around £12m per year - enough to run three whole Chatsworths.
It's hard to say exactly how much Mr Darcy would have been worth in total, but the Duke of Devonshire, who currently lives in Chatsworth House, is estimated to be worth around £500m.
With so many different factors affecting value comparisons across the centuries, it's difficult to arrive at a reliable modern equivalent for Mr Darcy's fortune. But Mrs Bennett's enthusiasm on learning that Darcy is to be married to her daughter, Elizabeth, probably wouldn't be much changed if she found out her daughter was to share in a £12m per year 21st-century income.
