Once, when a relationship I loved but struggled with was ending, I felt convinced that if only he and I went to the spot of one of our first dates (a place we had returned to throughout our relationship and where we always felt calm and connected), we would somehow figure everything out. Of course, I didn’t suggest we go there, and so we didn’t, and the relationship came to its natural end. Looking back I don’t think the place could have breathed new life into anything at the time, anyway, but what’s striking to me is that, for a moment, I was certain that a place had the power to do so. Such is the power of a couple’s secret, private space.
When we’re growing up, forts made of blankets and secret clubhouses provide space for friendships and crushes to develop. And if you’ve seen the movie Up!, you perhaps have some thoughts on how one’s childhood clubhouse can - with a little care, fresh paint, and the right partner-in-crime - create space for adult love to bloom.
As women and men grow up and form loving adult relationships, it becomes increasingly important for couples to create a space in which they can relax, be themselves, and grow closer. For many couples, the bed they share may be the place to which they retreat for feelings of safety, comfort and love - not to mention sex. A couple’s bed is where they may let down their emotional and physical guards during sleep as well as during sex. In fact, it may be one of the few places where they can make themselves feel entirely vulnerable to another human being.
For some people, trust and security come easy. For others, learning to be vulnerable to another person is a struggle that they may or may not win with time, practice and what feels like great risk taking. Consequently, as damaging as affairs in any shape or form may be, they can feel particularly threatening when a person allows their affair into the bed they share with their partner. Betraying trust by letting someone else into a couple’s bed can feel not just hurtful, but devastating.
The bed is such a special place for many women and men that it’s not unusual for some couples to say that they have their best conversations with each other when they are in bed. Maybe they wake up on weekends feeling rested and enjoy lying together, just talking. Perhaps before sleep, the ritual of getting undressed, settling into bed and holding one another close allows the conversation to flow more naturally than during the day. For some couples, it’s sex that brings them closer - kissing, hugging, touching, and naked passion may be followed by cuddling, closeness and sharing secrets one might never think to share over breakfast, let’s say, or watching television.
As relationship-enhancing as a bed or bedroom may be, others places can allow love or sex to bloom, too. A bath tub can serve as a private sanctuary in which some couples dissect their day, share their dreams, or seduce one another. The shower can be not only a place to become clean but a place to start kissing or to have passionate, lustful sex. Some couples find their special place outside the home: a fire tower nestled in the woods in which they can take in an entire forest of autumn leaves, a park in which they can lie down and look at clouds, or a neighborhood hotel that they can retreat to for a night away from the kids and a chance to feel young again. Even a living room sofa can provide comfort and closeness for a couple or family as they huddle together to eat popcorn and watch a movie.
Wherever you find your special place, know that it is important to have one and to visit it with some regularity to keep it alive as a sanctuary and a place that matters. Spaces become alive in the ways that they bring us closer to a partner, a family or a group of friends. As life gets hectic and relationships become stressed, special places can help to center a relationship. Going to bed together can feel calming, sneaking away to your favorite hotel can ignite passion, and drawing a fragranced bath for your significant other may just inspire romance or re-connection. Where’s your secret spot?

I am not yours
Sara Teasdale
I am not yours, not lost in you,
Not lost, although I long to be
Lost as a candle lit at noon,
Lost as a snowflake in the sea.
You love me, and I find you still
A spirit beautiful and bright,
Yet I am I, who long to be
Lost as a light is lost in light.
Oh plunge me deep in love—put out
My senses, leave me deaf and blind,
Swept by the tempest of your love,
A taper in a rushing wind.

With the new school year quickly approaching (or perhaps, for your early-starters, already under way), it’s time to get ready for a successful semester. And while you may be revamping your wardrobe for fall, it’s equally important to freshen up your study skills, too.
Have you ever noticed that your study habits are different than those of your friends? Or how you seem to learn faster in certain classes? Some people are quick to blame the professor or subject for their difficulties, but that isn’t always the cause. One thing that many people seem to overlook is their learning type.
The 3 Main Learning Types
Now, you may be wondering what a learning type is and how to find yours. There are three different learning types: Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic. You can be a combination of learning types, but most people have one type that dominates.
1. Visual learners learn best by seeing. If you seem to easily retain information from pictures, graphs, and videos, you are likely a visual learner.
2. Auditory learners learn best by hearing. If you seem to remember things by hearing them, whether listening to a lecture or repeating information out loud, then you are likely an auditory learner.
3. Kinesthetic learners learn best by doing. If you seem to learn best by working with your hands or testing out what you are shown, you are likely a kinesthetic learner.
So now that you know your personal learning style, the trick is to find out how to use your new-found knowledge to help you in your classes.

1.以what, whatever, whoever, whether, when, where, how, why等词引导的主语从句,在翻译的时候,一般可以按照英语原文顺序来翻译。
What he told me was only half-truth。
Whatever is worth doing should be done well。
Whether he comes or not makes no difference。
When we can begin the expedition is still a question。
How he is going to do it is a mystery。
It doesn’t make much difference whether he attends the meeting or not。
It seemed inconceivable that the pilot could have survived the crash。
It is strange that she should have failed to see her own shortcomings。
1.用that, what, how, when, which, why, whether, if 等引起的宾语从句,翻译成汉语的时候,一般不需要改变它在原句中的顺序。
I told him that because of the last condition, I’d have to turn it down。
Can you hear what I say?
I don’t know that he swam across the river。
I don’t know how he swam across the river。
He has informed me when they are to discuss my proposal。
Smith replied that he was sorry。
He would remind people again that it was decided not only by himself but bylots of others。
I made it clear to them that they must hand in their papers before 10 o’clock in the morning。
I heard it said that he had gone abroad。
I regard it as an honor that I am chosen to attend the meeting。
We consider it absolutely necessary that we should open our door to the outside world。
It seems that it is going to snow。
That is why Jack got scolded。
The question remains whether we can win the majority of the people。
His view of the press was that the reporters were either for him or against him。
能接同位语从句的名词主要有:belief(相信),fact(事实),hope(希望),idea(想法,观点),doubt(怀疑),news(新闻,消息),rumor(传闻),conclusion(结论),evidence(证据),suggestion(建议),problem(问题),order(命令),answer(回答),decision(决定),discovery(发现),explanation(解释),information(消息),knowledge(知识),law(法律),opinion(意见,观点),truth(真理,事实),promise(承诺),report(报告),thought(思想),statement(声明),rule(规定),possibility(可能)等。
He expressed the hope that he would come over to visit China again。
There is a possibility that he is a spy。
We know the fact that bodies possess weight。
The rumor that he was arrested was unfounded。
But this does not in any way alter the fact that they are now, from a practical point of view, irrational。
We have reached the conclusion that practice is the criterion for testing truth。
Not long ago, the scientists made an exciting discovery that this waste material could be turned into plastics。

P!nk - Blow Me (One Last Kiss)
Lyrics:
White knuckles
And sweaty palms from hanging on too tight
Clench your jaw
I've got another headache again tonight
Eyes on fire, eyes on fire
And they burn from all the tears
I've been crying, I've been crying
I've been dying over you
Tie a knot in the rope
Trying to hold, trying to hold
But there's nothing to grab
So I let go
I think I've finally had enough
I think I maybe think too much
I think this might be it for us
Blow me one last kiss
You think I'm just too serious
I think you're full of shit
My head is spinning, so
Blow me one last kiss
Just when it can't get worse
I've had a shit day
You've had a shit day
We've had a shit day
I think that life's too short for this
Want back my ignorance and bliss
I think I've had enough of this
Blow me one last kiss
I won't miss all of the fighting
That we always did
Take it in
I mean what I say when I say "there is nothing left"
No more [inaudible]
No more battles from me
You'll be calling a trick
'Cause you no longer sleep
I'll dress nice, I'll look good
I'll go dancing alone
I will laugh, I'll get drunk
I'll take somebody home
I think I've finally had enough
I think I maybe think too much
I think this might be it for us
Blow me one last kiss
You think I'm just too serious
I think you're full of shit
My head is spinning, so
Blow me one last kiss
Just when it can't get worse
I've had a shit day
You've had a shit day
We've had a shit day
I think that life's too short for this
Want back my ignorance and bliss
I think I've had enough of this
Blow me one last kiss
Blow me one last kiss
Blow me one last kiss
I will do what I please
Anything that I want
I will breathe, I will breathe
I won't worry at all
You will pay for your sins
You'll be sorry, my dear
All my [inaudible]
[inaudible] crystal clear
I think I've finally had enough
I think I maybe think too much
I think this might be it for us
Blow me one last kiss
You think I'm just too serious
I think you're full of shit
My head is spinning, so
Blow me one last kiss
Just when it can't get worse
I've had a shit day
You've had a shit day
We've had a shit day
I think that life's too short for this
Want back my ignorance and bliss
I think I've had enough of this
Blow me one last kiss
Blow me one last kiss
Blow me one last kiss
Just when it can't get worse
I've had a shit day
You've had a shit day
We've had a shit day
I think that life's too short for this
Want back my ignorance and bliss
I think I've had enough of this
Blow me one last kiss

The tests that show if you've got a male or female brain: The answer may surprise you - and explain your personality
Sit down for a moment. Relax. Then clasp your hands together so your fingers entwine — don’t overthink it! Now look at your thumbs. Which one is on top — the left one or the right?
If you are a man, the odds are it will be the left; if you are a woman, it is more likely to be the right. Now unfold your hands and take a look at your fingers, in particular your index finger (next to your thumb) and your ring finger (next to your little finger).
This is the stuff of jokes and self-help books — but it is also shown to be true through science. The question is, do these tendencies result from nature — with the biological gender we are born with deciding our interests and personalities — or do they result from nurture, with society and upbringing creating the differing ways that men and women behave?
The BBC series Horizon asked Professor Alice Roberts and me to investigate. We started from very different positions.
Alice thinks apparent brain differences between the sexes have been exaggerated by how our culture treats boys and girls. In the programme she carries out fascinating tests to prove her point, such as dressing up little boys as girls and vice versa and watching how people treat them.
Almost immediately, the girls start rough-housing and playing with trucks, while the boys are treated far more gently by the adults around them.
She argues that parents’ unconscious actions — such as being gentler with girls and letting boys behave more roughly — often mould children into men and women who embody gender stereotypes.
While I agree that lots of wild generalisations about men and women are bandied around, I also think there may be something in claims that our fundamental biology influences how we behave.
Professor Simon Baron-Cohen, an expert on the brain who I visited at Cambridge University, has done a lot of pioneering work on this. He believes, broadly, that people of whatever gender fall somewhere along a ‘systemiser’ to ‘empathiser’ spectrum.
Systemisters are people who enjoy breaking down and analysing systems.
They are more likely to become train spotters or computer scientists.
They are what he has called ‘male brained’ — as these qualities occur most frequently, but far from exclusively, in men.
Empathisers, on the other hand, are more typically ‘female’ brained as they are more typically women.
Although there are exceptions, most men — when tested — come out as more ‘systemising’ than ‘empathising’, while for women it is the other way round.
A number of studies have shown that the greater the difference between the length of the ring finger and the index finger, the more ‘male’ your brain is likely to be.
As you can imagine, this is a controversial area of science. Professor Baron-Cohen does these studies because he is interested in autism, which he describes as an extreme version of the male brain — more interested in systems and often struggling with empathy.
A while ago, when I was making a programme called Pleasure And Pain, we did a survey where we asked people which of the sexes they thought was better at tolerating pain — 81 per cent of women said ‘women’, while a mere 11 per cent thought men were the tougher breed.
Although men were more inclined to give themselves the benefit of the doubt, the majority, 54 per cent, still agreed ‘women’ were more stoical. But is this right?
One way to find out is to get male and female volunteers to take part in a cold water immersion test.
This is a standard pain test widely used because it causes acute pain without doing any long-term damage (as long as you don’t do it for more than 15 minutes).
In this test, you put your hand in a bucket of ice-cold water and see how long you can keep it there before the pain becomes intolerable.
I’ve done it a couple of times and oddly enough after the initial shock it doesn’t actually feel cold; below about 3 degrees Celsius your pain receptors overwhelm your temperature receptors so you are no longer able to tell if the water is hot or freezing.
All you know is that it is incredibly painful.
When this test is done in a laboratory setting, men almost always outlast women. This may be pure machismo, but Professor Jeff Mogil of McGill University, Montreal, thinks there is more to it.
A couple of years ago, I was in a large military hospital in Afghanistan, filming a series called Frontline Medicine for the BBC. I saw a number of soldiers, male and female, with serious head injuries.
I was told that the women were likely to make a better recovery than the men. Why? It may be, in part, because women have higher levels of progesterone.Progesterone is best known as a female hormone, involved in the menstrual cycle and pregnancy, but it is also important for the development of neurones — the cells that carry messages in the brain.
Animal studies and a few small human trials have shown that giving progesterone soon after suffering a brain injury improves survival and recovery.
This, I think, is why researching gender differences is worth doing.
It is not because it will help us understand why men struggle to remember their children’s birthdays or why there are fewer female darts players, but because it may help us find more effective ways to tackle disease.
