Sleep
Sleep is part of a person's daily activity cycle. There are several different stages of sleep, and they too occur in cycles.
If you are an average sleeper, your sleep cycle is as follows. When you first drift off into slumber, your eyes will roll about a bit, your temperature will drop slightly, your muscles will relax, and your breathing well slow and become quite regular. Your brain waves slow down a bit too, with the alpha rhythm of rather fast waves predominating for the first few minutes. This is called stage 1 sleep. For the next half hour or so, as you relax more and more, you will drift down through stage 2 and stage 3 sleep. The lower your stage of sleep, the slower your brain waves will be. Then about 40 to 60 minutes after you lose consciousness you will have reached the deepest sleep of all. Your brain waves will show the large slow waves that are known as the delta rhythm. This is stage 4 sleep.
You do not remain at this deep fourth stage all night long, but instead about 80 minutes after you fall into slumber, your brain activity level will increase again slightly. The delta rhythm will disappear, to be replaced by the activity pattern of brain waves. Your eyes will begin to dart around under your closed eyelids as if you were looking at something occurring in front of you. This period of rapid eye movement lasts for some 8 to 15 minutes and is called REM sleep. It is during REM sleep period, your body will soon relax again, your breathing will grow slow and regular once more, and you will slip gently back from stage 1 to stage 4 sleep - only to rise once again to the surface of near consciousness some 80 minutes later.

From sleeping standing up to shutting down half of their brain, animals have some strange sleeping habits. Now some of these more unusual habits, from napping giraffes to birds that sleep while flying, have been revealed in an infographic.
The chart maps the liveliest to the idlest creatures to reveal that Little brown bats are most lethargic, sleeping for around 19.5 hours a day.
This long period of sleep is thought to be a way of conserving energy and means they only hunt for a few hours each night when their insect prey are available.
In contrast, giraffes can go weeks without sleep and when they do grab some shut eye, it s never for more than five minutes.
This is because being large and slow moving giraffes are constantly vulnerable to attacks from predators, and therefore can t sleep for long periods.
Adult giraffes sleep standing up in short bursts, but keep watch on their young which lie down to sleep, tucking their long legs underneath their bodies and curling up like a cat.
However, other animals are experts at multitasking and can swim or fly while sleeping.
As well as exotic beasts, the chart features pets such as domestic cats (shown above) which sleep for approximately two thirds of their lives and take extra naps when it's raining or if they're bored
For example, dolphins and whales sleep while keeping half of their brain alert, so they don t drown, with dolphins typically dozing for around 10 hours a day.
The method is known as logging and it has been observed in bottlenose dolphins, which keep half of their brain a low level of alertness.
This allows the dolphin to retain enough consciousness to carry on breathing through its blowhole.
While sea otters aren t alert while they sleep, they form rafts to they don t drift away from each other.
The creatures sometimes hold hands, or paws, when they sleep and typically eat, sleep and rest while floating in groups called rafts.
These can range in numbers from a handful to hundreds of otters.
Migrating birds can sleep while flying, with some drinking and napping during epic journeys that last for six months.
Scientists recently have found that migrating birds, such as the Alpine swift, can fly for 200 days without stopping.
The bird s activity appeared to rise and fall during flight in a 2011 study, leading experts suggest that they control their wings while flying.

1. Sleep like a log
Log 有“原木”的意思,sleep like a log 表示睡得像块木头一样,说明睡得很沉;
sleep like a baby
He is tired, he sleeps like a log.
2. Dead to the world

3. Heavy sleeper
4. Sleep through

The Chinese methods have screened in the BBC Two documentary, Are Our Kids Tough Enough? Chinese School. A trailer for the programme shows a teacher shouting "listen to me", "just use your brain" and "no talking, no questions" at bewildered looking British children.
A group of Chinese teachers believe the option of living on welfare handouts has produced "feather-bedded" teenagers prone to rudeness and disrupting the classroom rather than concentrating on working and getting ahead.
This verdict on the failings of British pupils and the influence of the welfare state was delivered by five Chinese teachers who spent four weeks in a Hampshire comprehensive school to see whether the strict methods used in China would work here.
Teachers who stand in front of a class giving instruction for up to 12 hours a day have been credited with putting Chinese schools at the top of international ratings in maths, sciences and literacy, in which the record of UK schools is mediocre.
One of the teachers, Wei Zhao, believed British pupils lacked motivation. She said: "Even if they don't work, they can get money, they don't worry about it. But in China they can't get these things so they know, 'I need to study hard, I need to work hard to get money to support my family'. If the British Government really cut benefits down to force people to go to work they might see things in a different way."
Others among the Chinese teachers who took classes at Bohunt School in Liphook, Hampshire, found their group of 50 children, aged 13 and 14, were disruptive and unable to concentrate. Li Aiyun, from Nanjing Foreign Language School, said: "When I handed out the homework sheets, I expected everybody to be concentrated on the homework.
But when I walked in the classroom some students were chatting, some students were eating, somebody was even putting make-up on her face. I had to control myself, or I would be crazy. About half of them tried their best to follow me. And the other half? Who knows what they were doing?"
Science teacher Yang Jun, who taught in Xi'an, central China, before moving to Britain, said: "In China we don't need classroom management skills because everyone is disciplined by nature, by families, by society. Whereas here it is the most challenging part of teaching."
She also questioned the use of different teaching programmes for different pupils. "You have different syllabuses to suit different students' ability," she said. "We don't. We have one syllabus, one standard; you survive or you die. It's up to you."
But the Chinese methods did not appear to impress the Bohunt head teacher, Neil Strowger. He described the teaching techniques as "mind-numbingly boring" and said usual standards of discipline at his school were not as loose as the Chinese teachers described. Mr Strowger added: "I don't believe we are somehow causing our children to fail by having a welfare state."

Sleep deprivation can increase cravings for junk food, according to a new university report.
A sleepless night makes us more likely to reach for doughnuts or pizza than for whole grains and leafy green vegetables, the U.S. study suggests.
The study at the University of California, Berkeley, examined the brain regions that control food choices and researchers say the findings shed new light on the link between poor sleep and obesity.
文中的sleep deprivation即“睡眠不足”,其同义表达有:sleep-deprived,lack of sleep,sleep insufficiency,poor sleep等。
此外,胃口好可以说成“have great appetite for…”。

Now, there was a very young and beautiful wife, who became sick and nearly died. She was onher death bed and told her husband, "I love you very much, and I don't want to leave you. Please, after I die, don't marry another person. You promise me! Okay?
Then she worried that her husband would not keep the promise, so she threatened him. Shesaid, "If you marry another wife, I will become a ghost and take care of you." It's terrible! That's what she said to her husband, "I will make you suffer, always, forever, and eternally!"So the husband was maybe afraid of the wife. But here (Master points to the book) they say, "respected the wife." We always respect the wife, do we not? We respect the wife, but we'renot afraid! So the husband respected the wife and didn't think of remarrying another person.
But as God always makes trouble for human beings, he met another beautiful woman, younger, charming, sweeter and more attractive, and richer even! Rich! Oh, terrible! And she evenloved him very much and maybe more than the wife. Oh, too bad! That was only three monthsafter the funeral service. Now what can we do about that?
So he got engaged to her. After the engagement (the engagement happened during thedaytime), that night the husband saw the ghost of the wife coming. "Ah ha! As promised, hereI come." She appeared in front of him and scolded him and nagged him, saying that he hadbroken his promise; that he did not love her; that he was not sincere; that he was a badhusband; that he had no conscience; that he was a lousy man; that he was a terrible humanbeing.
Then the husband got very scared! Because this ghost was so terribly intelligent; she knewexactly what had happened between the husband
and the new fiancée. She told him what time he did what with her, and what time he gave herwhat, and talked to her about what. She knew everything, everything! So he couldn't deny it.But he was very scared.
He was so scared that he could not sleep, he could not eat, and he dared not go to see hisfiancée often. And their love affair nearly went on the rocks. So some people told him that heshould go to a temple and talk about his suffering to a Zen master, and maybe the Zen mastercould help him. Oh, my God! The Zen master takes care of everything, including ghosts andmarriage.
So the Zen master truly helped him. He said to the husband, "Your ex-wife has become aghost." (This we knew) "And she is very intelligent. So she knows everything that you did withyour fiancée. Actually, you should respect such a ghost. But there is a way to drive her away. Now,
next time if the ghost appears, you have to make a bet with her." The Zen master said that sheknew everything; she knew too much already. But probably there was something she didn'tknow. If she answered incorrectly, then she should not come back and bother him any more. Then he could marry the one he loved.
Because she was dead! She could not serve him in any way. She could not cook for him. Shecould not take care of anything. So the husband asked the Zen master, "What can I do? Whatshould I ask her?"
And the Zen master said to him, "Next time when she comes, take a handful of mung beans inyour hand and ask her how many beans are inside. She surely cannot answer that. And thenshe will disappear. Because, if she cannot answer that question, you will know this is only anillusion of your own mind, your own conscience or your own imagination
because you're already too scared, afraid of the wife and imagining, an illusion of your mind. Ifshe doesn't answer, if she cannot answer, then you know it's an illusion and she will vanish."
So, the next night, truly, the ghost appeared. And the husband told her, "Oh, yes, you knoweverything. You are very intelligent; I cannot do anything about it." And then the ghost said, "Yes, I know. And I also know that today you went to see a Zen master and you talked aboutus."
So the man said, "Okay, since you know everything, now, can you tell me how many beans arein my hand?" As soon as he asked this question, the ghost disappeared.
So you know, was there a real ghost? No! Then you shouldn't be afraid tonight.

Busting Summer Myths
Here are a few truths about the adages you may have heard over and over again in your childhood.
·Wait 30 minutes after eating to go swimming
False. No need to wait 30 minutes. The body produces enough blood and carries enough oxygen to digest food and move your arms and legs. For competitive swimmers however, incorrect eating can cause cramping, but not to the point of drowning due to cramps.
·If water is stuck in your ear, stand on one foot and tilt your head
False. Your ear canal is curved, so just tilting your head often isn't enough to release the water. The better move: Tilt your head so the waterlogged ear faces down. Place the tip of your index finger in the cuplike spot at the bottom of your ear, and position your thumb behind the ear on the cartilage above your earlobe. Hold firmly and wiggle your ear to straighten the ear canal and dislodge the water.
·You'll get sick walking in and out of air-conditioned buildings
False. Simply going from a cool room to the outside won't make you sick, but going from an indoor clean environment to an outdoor dirty environment can inflame allergies.
·Placing open wounds in the ocean will help healing
False. While salt-water may be cleansing, the water in the ocean is far more complex and dirty with bacteria and animals life. I mean, fish pee in there.
·Scratching bug bites will make them worse
Yeah, don't scratch bug bites, it makes them worse. Not only can the germs and bacteria on your hands infect the wound, scratching actually intensifies the itch by inflaming system messenger proteins. Use ice or a cold cloth to sooth irritated areas.
·Urinating on jellyfish sting myth
Bad idea. It can only make matters worse. Double negative.

Why Is Sleep So Important?
If you have sleep deficit it impacts everything you do think and act. Unfortunately a major amount of people have a large sleep deficit.
A lack of sleep is linked to emotional problems like excessive sadness, give up attitude and depression. Sleep helps , Sleep allows for a slowing down of our body's systems, so we can be re-energized for another days work and play. Without adequate sleep we are like a battery slowly getting recharged and only getting partially recharged each night.
Are You Getting Enough Sleep?
You may think you're getting enough sleep, probably you are not.
Important signs you may need more sleep:
difficulty waking up in the morning
inability to concentrate
falling asleep during classes
feelings of moodiness and even depression
How To Get More Sleep?
Here are some suggestions that help you get better sleep:
Go to bed at a regular set time. If you go to bed at the same time each night it signals to your brain that it's time to sleep. Awakening at the same time every day will help establish sleep patterns. It is important to stick to your sleep schedule even on weekends. Going to sleep no more than an hour later or waking up no later than 2 to 3 hours longer than you would usually do during the week.
Yes you should exercise regularly, even if it is just a walk around the block, every bit helps. Of course do not just before going before bed, this can raise your body temperature and keep you from falling to sleep. Most sleep experts agree that exercising 5 or 6 hours before bedtime will help a person sleep longer and quicker.
Don't drink beverages with caffeine, such as coke and coffee, after 4 P.M. Nicotine in cigarettes is a stimulant, so quitting smoking could help you sleep better.
Find inner peace, rest your mind, think of pleasant thoughts and places. A special vacation spot or favorite beach. Do not watch action movies or TV shows right before bed. Believe it or not reading suspense books can keep you from falling asleep.
Slowly unwind by keeping the lights low. This is important because light informs the brain that it's time to wake up. Keep out of bright lights, keep off the computer before going to bed and listen to soothing music. It sometimes helps to pick a certain soothing music and play the same song every night right before bed. Breath slowly and relax.
Try not to nap during the day too much. Any nap of more than 30 minutes will keep you from falling asleep later.
Your sleep environment is also very important. Your bedroom should be uncluttered and peaceful, with gentle soothing colors. Avoid reds and blues. Keep your room dark, slightly on the cool side.
If possible wake yourself up with bright light, especially from the sun.

The science of sleep can be fuzzy and confusing at times. Researchers are still not sure what our brains are up to, why we dream, or what those dreams even mean. But there are some intriguing things we’ve learnt in recent years about our mind’s journey to the Land of Nod.
Here are 10 surprising facts from the BBC Future archive and elsewhere that shed some light on why we need a restful night’s sleep:
1. Familiar smells can help to form memories in your sleeping brain, improving your performance at simple learning tasks.
2. One small study proposed that learning the didgeridoo aids sleep, perhaps because it strengthens breathing muscles.
3. The body shudders people report as you fall asleep are surprisingly common, and harmless – they’re called hypnic jerks.
4. The most natural time to nap, based on our circadian rhythms, is between 2 and 4pm. But while napping later in the day is more restorative, getting some shuteye earlier on is more likely to boost your creativity.
5. As we discovered earlier this week, a mutation in a gene called DEC2 might allow some people to sleep consistently for only four hours a night with no adverse physical effects….
6. …however, that’s probably not you. Less than 5% of people are natural short sleepers. Most people need eight hours, but around 30% of us get fewer than six per night.
7. One theory for why we need sleep is that our brains use the opportunity to consolidate memories from that day. We might also deal with the memory of unpleasant or traumatic events during sleep.
8. Some researchers have used people’s brain activity to reconstruct YouTube videos they were watching. It’s thought a similar technique could one day be used to recreate our dreams.

1. SLEEP NAKED
As well heating you up too much, pyjamas can also be a distraction with tangled drawstrings, bunched-up bottoms and constrictive t-shirts. Maintaining a cool body temperature allows anti-ageing hormoneMelatonin to do its work - so shed those layers.
2. EAT A BANANA
The yellow fruit is a great natural source of sleep hormone, melatonin as well as amino acid tryptophan - which are all conducive in helping you reach the land of snooze. So munch away.
3. STOP SMOKING
While many people think that smoking before bed will help them to relax, in actual fact, puffing on a cigarette will do the opposite. The nicotine increases your heart rate and keeps the brain alert, which can be troublesome when you're aiming for an early night.
4. SWITCH OFF
The artificial light from TVs, phones and tablets act as a stimulant that disrupts the body's internal clock. So avoid at all costs especially when the lights are out.
5. HOT MILK
Yes, it may only seem like an old wives' tale, but drinking a glass of the warm stuff can actually help you drop off quicker. Dairy products are rich in sleep-inducing amino acid, tryptophan, and can contribute to the production of snooze chemicals, serotonin and melatonin.
6. TURN THE CLOCK AROUND
Another exercise that many are guilty of is watching the minute hand tick when struggling to get to sleep. We can't help but calculate how many hours we have left of sleep, which can heighten anxiety and make you less able to relax. Hide the alarm clock for a more effortless slumber.
7. TAKE A BATH
Body temperature naturally dips at night, so soaking in a hot tub and raising your temperature, followed by getting out and experiencing a rapid cool-down can automatically make you feel more sleepy come bedtime.
8. ESTABLISH A SLEEP ROUTINE
Setting bedtime routines and repeating them every night can help your body realise sleep is imminent, and will add to the drowsy factor. Activities such as laying out your pyjamas, making your lunch for the next day and even brushing your teeth can become sleep-conducive once they are incorporated into a routine.
9. NO CAFFEINE AFTER 2PM
Many people depend on coffee for that late afternoon pick-up, but it turns out that the caffeine content can be detrimental for getting shut eye later on. Caffeine stays in the body for eight hours, so avoid after 2pm, otherwise your brain will be prevented from entering deep sleep or even falling asleep all together.
10. STAY COOL
While many people will pile on the layers in the hopes that this warms them up and produces a deeper level of relaxation, being too hot can actually keep you awake. Slipping in between cool, fresh sheets can help trigger a drop in your temperature. This coolness signals for the body to produce melatonin, the hormone which induces sleep.
11. SPRAY SOME LAVENDER
The aroma of lavender has been proven to slow heart rates and blood pressure and it also has a relaxing effect. Sprinkle a few droplets on your pillow case or even in a hot bath before bed.
12. SET A SCHEDULE
Programme your body to sleep better by getting up at the same time every day and going to sleep at the same time everyday. This way your body is conditioned to feel more alert when you're ready to wake up, and more sleepy when you're ready to hit the hay.
13. BLOCK OUT THE NOISE
13.隔音
Whether its a snoring house mate or partying neighbours, loud noise is a distraction that can stop you from nodding off in the first place. If you live and sleep in noisy conditions, invest in a good pair of earplugs to ensure you don't wake up exhausted and cranky.
14. BLOCK OUT THE LIGHT
14.遮光
When the sun goes down and your body is submerged in darkness, it automatically starts producing sleep hormone, melatonin, which means your body feels less alert and sleep is more inviting. Help your body with this process by investing in blackout curtains and switching off all power sources when going to bed. Invest in an eye-mask if necessary.
15. BREATHE DEEPLY
A big obstacle in being able to get some shut-eye is attempting to quieten down the mind. If this is a problem, observe breathing exercises, which not only calms down the nervous system and slows your heart rate, but also helps focus the mind on something else.
The 4-7-8 breathing exercise has proved very conducive in aiding sleep:
Exhale through your mouth.
Close your mouth and inhale through your nose for 4 seconds.
Hold your breath for 7 counts.
Exhale for 8 counts.
Repeat 3 times.
16. CHECK YOUR MATTRESS
[cn]16.
Contrary to popular belief, a person's mattress type should depend on their needs: e.g. whether you have a problematic back or need something firmer or softer. Always ensure to do a 15-minute test in the store, which gives you a sufficient amount of time to test its comfort, and trial it on your stomach and your back.
17. CUT OUT BOOZE
Forget that cheeky nightcap, studies have revealed that although alcohol can help you fall asleep more quickly and more deeply for a while, it is more disruptive to your sleep cycle in the later part of the night. The consumption of alcohol can also cause pauses in your breathing, which can wake you up and keep you awake.
18. WRITE DOWN YOUR WORRIES
One major problem that stops us from nodding off is dwelling on certain things and playing back various scenarios in our heads. This anxiety can up our levels of stress and stop us from slumbering away. Writing down five of your worries before bed every night can help alleviate some of the pressure and help get some of the anxiety off your chest.
19. EXERCISE
Working out can help relieve stress and muscle tension, and even improve your mood - all helpful factors to improve relaxation. The best time to exercise is between 4-7pm, but ensure that it's not within four hours of your bedtime, as your body temperature and adrenaline levels will be too high to nod off.
20. LIMIT THE BED TO SLEEP AND SEX
Avoid shuffling paperwork or watching TV in bed. By reserving the bed for only sleep and sex, this conditions people to associate the sight and feel of their bed with sleep and relaxation more than anything else.

Growing up in a hard-working Midwestern city in the 1980s, I quickly learned that sleep is the first expense I should cut in a given day. The men I looked up to at a young age regularly boasted about running on just a few hours of sleep. While this was rooted in a good-natured work ethic, it led me to view needing sleep as a sign of weakness. I continue to see this perception in the workplace today, where it is considered a badge of honor to stay at the office late working on a project.
The problem is, one less hour of sleep is not equal to an extra hour of achievement. In many cases the opposite occurs. When you lose an hour of sleep, it decreases your well-being, productivity, health, and ability to think the following day. One of the most influential studies of human performance, conducted by professor K. Anders Ericsson, found that top performers slept 8 hours and 36 minutes per day. The average American, for comparison, gets just 6 hours and 51 minutes of sleep on weeknights.
You are simply a different person when you operate on insufficient sleep. And it shows. If you do not get enough sleep, it can lead to a cascade of negative events. You achieve less at work, skip regular exercise, and eat poorly.
This lack of sleep is also costly. According to a study from Harvard Medical School, lack of sleep costs the American economy $63 billion a year in lost productivity alone. The problem is not just people missing work on account of sleep, the larger issue is people who show up for work in a sleepless state. One scientist, who has studied this topic extensively, claims a loss of four hours of sleep produces as much impairment as consuming a six-pack of beer. According to a survey from the National Sleep Foundation, roughly two-thirds of people studied do not get enough sleep on weeknights.
However, if you are able to get an additional hour of sleep tonight, it can make the difference between a miserable day and a good one. A small adjustment, even 15 or 30 minutes, could make or break your next day. The key is to aim for somewhere between seven and nine hours of quality sleep per night. While getting this much sleep each night is easier said than done, there are a few small tricks to improve your odds of a good night’s sleep.
What you do in the hours before bed could matter most. More than 90 percent of Americans admit to using electronic communications in the hour before bed. This is an obvious problem in terms of allowing things like late-night messages to enter your thoughts. What you may not realize is that the light from these devices alone could also suppress your melatonin levels by as much as 20 percent, which is a more direct threat to your sleep. To avoid these issues, impose a moratorium on all electronic devices in the hour before your normal bedtime and be cautious about bright light from any sources in the hours before bed.
Creating the right environment for sleep in your bedroom can also give you a head start. It is easier to sleep in a room that is a few degrees cooler than the temperature you are accustomed to throughout the day. This prevents your natural body clock from waking you up in the middle of the night. The same principle applies to noise, where using white noise apps or devices can drown out sounds that wake you up unnecessarily throughout the night. What’s critical for a good night of sleep is to create a routine where you eliminate as much variance as possible.
Prioritize seven to nine hours of high-quality sleep ahead of all else. You will be more likely to have a good workout, get more done at your job, and treat your loved ones better when you put sleep first. Keep in mind that every hour of sleep is a positive investment — not an expense. Based on all of the research on this topic, we need to make sleep a core value at home and work.
Sacrificing sleep may no longer be a sign of strength.
